Elizabeth Banks in Jenny Packham at the “Catching Fire” NY Premiere

Posted on November 21, 2013

Darlings, if you’re tired of watching the ongoing Catching Fire poledance, just remember to take a moment and appreciate how much these stars are willing to do to ensure we have something to talk about. It could have been boring lace cocktail dresses straight down the line, but bless their hearts, the cast seems to know (or has been directed to understand) that the characters they’re portraying are already iconic, with strong visual designs. You don’t have to dress for a premiere like your character (and in a way, we think that’s kind of lame if you do), but it’s never a bad idea to dress according to the world your character inhabits and Lizzie in particular plays someone who is utterly defined by her outrageous fashion.

Elizabeth Banks attends “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” premiere in New York City in an Jenny Packham ensemble paired with Christian Louboutin heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

And we love it.

Makeup’s a bit lacking, though.

Switch out the lipstick, and I’m sold.

    • sagecreek

Yeah, I’m wondering if it’s just my monitor, or is it really that orange?

      • gabbilevy

I think it’s your monitor. I’m seeing it as a bright, but definitely red, red.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

Me too, I’m seeing it as a classic red. Not too orange or bluish – just red.

      • marlie

It’s a color, so I’m pretty happy with that.

    • kmk05

Agreed! If she had fuller lips maybe it would have been better. Or with some gloss? This called for some heavier jewellery up top (earrings, perhaps) and slightly more present eyes as well.

EDIT: I meant danglier earrings, of course. She is already sporting some sizable ones here.

    • charlotte

“But it was such an effort to match it to the background!”

    • Celandine1

I want a stronger eye but still love it!

  • annachronizm

wow if the bottom were a skirt, I’d be like, high school prom dress. But the pants make it interesting.

    • Mary229

And I feel like it’s the pants that make it….Effie Trinket.

      • annachronizm

agreed. though I’d probably add feathers, a rococo wig and geisha inspired makeup on top of it.

      • Mrs. Julien

I read that as “Eiffel Tower” at first, but it still worked.

  • Mary Lauer

The pants are a skosh too long on her, giving them a blousy harem pant look. Notice they don’t do that on the runway model. Love the sparkles tho!

    • kmk05

They are definitely blousy on the runway. Not as long, but very much slouchy. I think if they were a tiny bit less loose it would have worked even better.

    • GillianHolroyd

Agree, the runway look tapers nicely to the ankle. They just look baggy with cuffs on Eliz Banks.

  • TerryMH

And the weird “hand jewelry” – uggh I hate that trend – its too much with the outfit, which I do quite like.

    • Ooooh, I love hand jewelry. Hands are my thing, though.

      • Sobaika

Hands are no more my thing than any other body part, but I do like the jewelry. It’s different and still appropriate for the outfit.

  • ChaCha_70

Well done! I think she looks super chic!

  • Lily

I never thought I’d be into full pants like this, but these suit her extremely well.

  • tereliz

I fucking love it. She looks fab. I don’t care who knows it. End of story.

  • cmb92191

It looks a little mariachi band .. but other than that.. very nice

    • MaggieMae

      Now I cannot un-see the mariachi…

    • formerlyAnon

But, she’s single-handedly defined “Good Mariachi.”

May qualify her for some kind of Nobel prize.

  • kimmeister

I don’t like the harem pant jumpsuit in theory, and yet I can’t deny that she is totally making it work. Kudos!

  • Sobaika

Never thought I’d love spangled harem pants but here we are. Love her jewelry, although if there were ever a moment for darker eye makeup, this was it.

  • jtabz

Not only does she look pretty fab, but she managed to sneak a pair of comfy bottoms into this endless poledance. Sparkly *and* clever.

  • Its awesome looking top to toe. I am not usually on board with this style of pant, but she’s pulling it off beautifully.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this. The look could have used a bit more eye makeup, but EB is winning the Catching Fire red carpet run.

  • This is the happiest I’ve been with any attempt so far. I pretty much love it. Do I wish the legs weren’t cuffed? I do. But everything is else is interesting, flattering, and fresh. Thanks Elizabeth.

  • Rachel

i wish she had gone for a darker/more dramatic eye, but i am really loving this.

  • Mary229

She’s basically inhabitating capitol style. She’s serving Effie Trinkett up on the red carpet. I totally love it. (Her role in the second book is very small though so I can’t imagine she’s in the movie much compared to how much she’s been on the red carpet. )

  • Claudia Berry

    Love this on her!

  • Kelly

Now this is fun. I don’t really like the harem-pants cuff; the model’s sleeker look is better. But as you say, this is Effie. Good job.

  • Nancer

Fabulous! Love this. So nice to see fashion that is different, has an edge to it, but still manages to flatter the female figure without sending her out in a bathing suit!

  • MannahattaMamma

    fanfuckingtastic. plus: pockets.

    • gigi kennedy

i know, right? saw it & clapped right here at my little desk at work. FAB.U.LOUS

  • KinoEye

Hot. Absolutely loving the bracelet/ring on her right hand. Thanks for bringing the drama, Lizzie!

    • sagecreek

Oops! Saw your comment right after I posted mine…oh, well, differing opinions are what makes T-Lo so much fun 🙂

  • sagecreek

I love it, except for that lame-o bracelet ring thing. Didn’t those go out in 1974?

    • MilaXX

They’re back, along with first knuckle rings.

  • cocohall

Again, I am one of the seven people in North America who have not read these books (and will not see the movies), but is there BULL FIGHTING? Why do I feel the urge to yell Toro Toro Toro?!

The pants looks better on the model because she is keeping her legs together and somehow that works better than Miss Banks wide stance that gives you the peek-a-boo red backdrop between her legs. It ruins the effect somehow. ALso, too long.

  • Are we drifting back towards the formal cargo pants look of the early 2000s? I don’t hate this, but it isn’t my favourite.

    • zenobar

Please, God, no. If ever there was a trend that howled “fashion victim,” it was satin cargo pants. *shudder*

  • Jessica Freeman

Visually interesting and not insanely ugly. Well done, Lizzie.

  • CPK1

I don’t know why I like this. I feel like shouldn’t but I do. It is chic and unexpected. But yes, better make-up and ugh, hand jewelry.

  • Tatiana Luján

I get that this is an interesting look, but I don’t like it.

  • LipstickForPigs

  • kmk05

It feels like her face is a little underdone, but I really love the outfit. And the shoes and hand jewellery are all appropriately deployed.

  • JulieTy

    POCKETS!!!! :-)))

  • Chaiaiai

I freaking LOVE this woman. She just gets it 90% of the time, which is better than most. And she has fun with it.

  • SuzBald

I can’t hate. Fascinating to look at!

  • gigi kennedy

oh i LOVE it too!!!! *applause, applause*

  • decormaven

I love it- but I wish she had kept her hands out of the pockets. Just because they’re there doesn’t mean they need to be employed. On a related note, please promise we don’t have to see another Dior catastrophe today.

  • CB

Love this overall, but not a fan of the pegged pants. If they either remained wide at the hem, or were super-slim the whole leg, I would be 100% sold.

  • Love love love this.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Bolder eye makeup and this is WERQ worthy.

  • jilly_d

unreservedly love it. Thanks to Lizzie for bringing it to the RC, unlike everyone else in the film.

  • mjude

I am surprised I like this. she is bringing it.

  • marlie

Something I never thought I’d say about a bedazzled jumpsuit with a peplum… I LOVE IT. Lizzie could have used stronger eye makeup, but she still looks pretty fabulous here.

  • 3boysful

Not entirely drinking the koolaid here. The crystal trim on the pants looks like some kind of bling-y alien creeping its way toward her head . . . .

    • Monabel

      Is that bad?

  • kipper

Did it come with a cape and bull ?

  • MilaXX

I love it! I think the makeup is just fine. Nice color on the lips and just the right amount on cheeks and eyes.

  • Lolo Andre

God Bless her. She is serving!! ExceptTheLipstick

  • Anna_Cecilia

Fun! It’s 2 Legit 2 Quit meets Princess Jasmine in Vegas.

  • Shawn EH

    I Dream of Bewitched?

  • Imasewsure

LOVE THIS! And I haven’t really loved much from this pole dance yet… this is fab and fun

  • Daniel

    At least she looks comfortable.

  • Perfection. I love the whole ensemble and actually, the hair is great and the make-up isn’t buggin’.

  • CommentsByKatie

NO. Shades of Sharon Stone but not in a good way. (Although it’s hard for me to imagine how Sharon Stone could be bad, but somehow this is.)

  • pookiesmom

I’m clearly in the minority, but I HATE this with a fiery passion. It looks like something that a lascivious octogenarian would wear. On Christmas.

    • Madam Von Sassypants

Which is what makes it FABULOUS. Golden Girls DRAMAAA!

  • another_laura

I am totally shocked that I love this, but wow, I really do!

  • Andrea Lentz

I think this is perfect and she has been far better on point that poor Jennifer

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Love this, but I wish in just one shot she wasn’t pulling on the pockets.

  • Monabel

  • Kate4queen

yup we all yearn to be bedazzled on our hips and outer thighs.

    • Qitkat

I read this in a totally sarcastic voice (as I think that’s how you intended). I’ve never seen anything add so much weight to a slim person’s hips. I love it from the waist up though.

      • Kate4queen

totally sarcastic! me=exBrit and add self-deprecating and ironic as well LOL

  • Trickytrisha

I can’t tell what the blingy stuff is, but it’s used with a bit of a heavy hand on the peplum. I am enjoying this though, but agree the makeup needs a tad more emphasis.

These Catching Fire actors are trotting all over the place for these premieres. Must be grueling.

  • Cher’s mother dressed as Princess Jasmine. I love her, but I’m not feeling this one.

  • formerlyAnon

She WINS the women’s bracket of this event.

    Love to death.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I wish I could wear this – it’s amazing and fun and bet she feels f’ing fantastic in it. She looks f’ing fantastic, for sure.

  • Lilak

    Ohh! Ha! What FUN!

  • Not applicable

I think she has the last tubes of Tangine lipstick…

  • xmixiex

  • rh33

This is great…So 40s Hollywood glamour. Needs long gloves and a snood.

  • quiltrx

I like the original ‘normal’ pant much better than the weird harem-y version.
I’m not totally sold on this even with the better pants…but it’s a look, and interesting. And her hair is better than usual.

  • sparkly!

  • SorayaS

I think the make up is gorgeous! She would have tipped over into drag queen territory with a heavier face of makeup.

  • Mona_Visa

Love! I want to kiss the screen.

  • NBG

I like this more than I thought I would. She is making it work. Maybe because she didn’t let her accessories compete? She’s pretty much shouting: “Look at the pants! Love the pants! I command you.”

  • Aidan B

    LOVE. That is all.

  • guest2visits

Works for her and works for the red carpet.
