Elizabeth Banks in Jason Wu at the “Hunger Games” World Premiere

Posted on November 12, 2013

Hmmm. A bold choice, but we’re going to stick to our haircolor rule on this one. Pale blondes need to be more careful than most when it comes to wearing yellow. And really, the question of this yellow should have been a no-brainer.

Elizabeth Banks attends the world premiere of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in London in a custom Jason Wu yellow strapless gown with side cutouts.

It’s SO not her color. It’s a shame, because we like her hair and makeup, and the shape of the dress looks fabulous on her. But that acid-yellow simply looks terrible against her skin and hair. Also, the bodice is weird.

We appreciate the effort, but it’s not working. We get the impression she knew it was a risky choice and thought she could make it work through sheer force of will. She’s serving it up in these pics, you’ve got to give her that.

Agreed with all you say. I mostly hate yellow on the RC. And cut outs.

    • MoHub

I wasn’t nearly as disturbed by the color as by the cutouts.

      • demidaemon

Same here. Those are some weird-ass cutouts, and I am so tired of the side-ab trend going on right now.

  • Jessica Freeman

It’s really reflecting poorly on an already bad make up job. If this was in a blue or green, it would have been a WERQ, even with those silly cut-outs.

    • Frank_821

NO kidding. How could the designers not see this sharp chartreuse yellow would look terrible on her. How about you sling the fabric across her body to make sure!

      • mshesterp

It’s annoying, because that would’ve been simple to do and she’s serving up everything else. I’m thinking she chose it in that color on purpose (all “Catch THIS Fire, bitches!”), which I respect, but I do not like.

  • Danielle

I could have sworn the “stay away from yellow” rule was imprinted on all of us pale blondes at birth.

    • Constant Reader

It doesn’t do us olive-skinned, raven-haired women any favors, either.

      • http://skreened.com/bkcentral Sarah

Pale pink strawberry blondes with rosy cheeks either, I’m afraid.

        • 3boysful

I think SOME women of color can pull it off. But that’s it.

    • Sunraya

I’m blonde with very light blue eyes, but I get really tan, and I can wear yellow when I’m tan. Not in the winter, though.
And yes, I use sunscreen religiously, but just going out for a run gets me tan, and the sunscreen sweats off.

    • ecallaw1977

I still always think of Michelle Williams at the Oscars or Golden Globes with Heath, and she looked phenomenal, so there must be exceptions to the rule!

      • demidaemon

I also think it’s about choosing the right yellow for your skin tone. Remember there are shades of a color, not just one tone. ;)

  • mjude

whoa that is for sure a big ass yellow dress

  • gabbilevy

This dress was custom. Maybe this looks totally different in person, because that feels like a rookie mistake for Jason Wu otherwise.

    • CakesOnAPlane

and JLaw is COMPLETELY judging her from the poster in the second to last picture.

  • Karen Belgrad

Dearest Reese and Renee, your legacy lives on…

  • decormaven

Not loving the choice of lip color either. I applaud her effort to sell the look, even though it is supremely unsuited for her.

    • Jessica Freeman

Yea, coral was a huge no in this case.

    • ccinnc

I think orangey lip color is tough to pull off unless teeth are unnaturally white.

    • SugarSnap108

The lips just make the bad choice on dress color even worse.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I don’t mind the bodice so much – it’s a lot of dress, so the cut outs kind of lighten this.

  • Stella Zawistowski

Ooh, no. Would love to see this gown on a woman of color, though. Lupita Nyong’o particularly.

    • Jaye Tyler

This tho. First thought was “Honey, call Lupita ASAP and see if she’ll deign to deliver you from the evil this is wreaking on your features.”

    • conniemd

Didn’t Kerry Washington wear a very bright yellow Jason Wu dress? I thought she looked fabulous in bright yellow.

      • CarrieBaby

It fits Kerry’s skin tone. That’s why it looked so good

  • Lori

In the pics that show the whole dress the large expanse of that yellow literally makes my eyes hurt a little bit. Weird.

  • ashtangajunkie

I would love this on her in royal blue. Holy cow, that is YELLOW. All caps YELLOW.

    • Constant Reader

I was thinking a blue-green. But it’s possible I’ve looked at too many peacock feathers today…

  • carnush

    I love it.

    • DuBey2

Me too. She should fill in those cutouts and ship it to me, pronto. I love almost all yellows in fashion, but agree w/ the uncles about not so much on her hair color and skin tones.

  • SugarSnap108

It’s painfully obvious that this isn’t her color, and I have to disagree with TLo on the makeup. I think it’s awful. The lip color is especially bad with this dress.

Despite the makeup and cutouts, though, she could’ve looked pretty damn good if this dress were a deep blue.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Jeesus! Why are they fucking this up so spectacularly?

  • AnguaVonUberwald

I usually love a bold yellow, but yeah, that really doesn’t work on her. Her hair is picking up the harshness of the dress color.

  • Emily Smith

Sweet jesus she looks like a canary.

  • Diego!

She looks like a grown up Tweety

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t dislike that color on her, but the cutouts of the bodice are terrible.

    • Little_Olive

Thank you for helping me muster the confidence to vote for the yellow after 40+ comments to the contrary (what a coward am I).

It’s not so much the yellow as that there is A LOT of if. And the cutouts are an afterthought. And it needed earrings.

      • Tatiana Luján

I feel intimidated too when I like something that apparently nobody else here likes.
Sometimes I don’t write anything and some other times I get a grip and remember
        this isn’t high school.

  • sugarkane105

    She looks like lemon-lime Gatorade.

  • kimmeister

I don’t think you’re supposed to be able to see the underwire from the outside.

  • Nan

This is a clear example of why one should never judge colors from what they see on a monitor. Her hair color looks different in every shot, therefore, one cannot trust that the dress color is acurately represented either. Blonds look wonderful in yellow. I bet it looks great in person.

  • MilaXX

I hate the unnecessary gut gut outs and yes the yellow is not her color.

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

    Hellacious color.

  • marlie

If one’s hair color and dress are the exact same shade of yellow, one might consider asking their colorist for a refund.

Really, her hair is YELLOW, not blonde. Otherwise, the dress is pretty, but the cutouts are unnecessary.

  • Bradio311

    Highlighter.

  • In_Stitches

In some shots, the yellow really makes her skin sing. She looks tan and luminous. In others, she looks sickly and sweaty. I love how the line of the cutouts echos/continues the line of the skirt, but overall the color is just too prohibitive. It misses the mark.

  • KinoEye

Quick fix? Acid green instead of acid yellow. That color tends to really sing on blondes. Did the stylists of the Hunger Games cast get together and decide to sabotage the ladystars on their big night out of sheer jealousy, or what? Both she and JLaw should really have looked stunning for this, and it shouldn’t have been that hard to pull off.

  • cocohall

There are some medications that can turn your pee this color. Which is probably not the first thought you want to spring forth while wearing a custom ball gown at a premiere. I’m just guessing. Plus, ugly silhouette. Is she hiding the cast of the Nutcracker under that skirt?

  • nannypoo

Whatever they’ve used for bronzer on her face is pretty bad. I’m guessing they were trying to keep her face from turning yellow too.

  • SusannaGA

And also, why no jewelry? Why?

  • Janet B

The lack of jewelry is stunning.

    • http://skreened.com/bkcentral Sarah

Eh, what good would jewelry have done in the face of EPIC YELLOW? No point, really.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

GORGEOUS dress, hair, makeup, everything – except the dress color. If this had been red or plum or blue, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. The dress itself is amazing except that it’s yellow.

  • Bethany Roullett

She’s serving it in these pictures because if she leans forward the tiniest tiny bit, that dress will wrinkle and crease and pooch out like nobody’s business. Poor girl’s back must’ve been a wreck at the end of the night.

  • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

Props to her for wearing a tit seam without looking ridiculous. Props to her whole team, really, for the fabulous fit of that dress.

  • frannyprof

Such a shame about the color of the dress. Because this could’ve should’ve would’ve been a werq.

  • Kent Roby

Say what you will, but this is by far the best that Chelsey Handler has ever looked.

  • alaskahyoung

She even tried with the bronzer in her make up, but that yellow + the orange lipstick simply makes her skin looks weird.

  • DTLAFamilies

Even though it was a miss, I love how she always brings it to the Hunger Game premieres. She understands how to promote this movie.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Agreed. I’ve always liked her, but after the HG poledance it became full on LOVE. (Have you heard her talk about how much she wanted that role? It shows in her work on and off screen.)

  • Not applicable

I’ll give her a pass– it must be hard to re-adjust to real-world fashion after being in those Effie Trinket costumes…

  • Trickytrisha

The only thing I don’t like here is the lipstick color and the panel on the dress front not lying flat.

  • hellkell

Ew. Satin and cutouts. Burn it.

  • Anplica Fiore

Royal blue or emerald green with this dress for the win.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can only believe the person responsible for choosing the dress color was also in charge of the terrifying amount of bronzer on her face? She literally looks like she’s wearing a mask.

  • boweryboy

    Ouch. My eyes.

  • TinaBelchersawkwardmoan

I really wish she would have gone with something more Effie. Something a bit crazy. I think she looks pretty (though I do agree about the yellow) but still. Something a little more… getcha, I guess.

  • Terri Terri

My 1964 Barbie doll had that dress! Without the cutouts of course.

  • MissusBee

    Bitch ageth not.

Damn you, time-impervious modernist buttercup! *shakes fist*

  • bertkeeter

Someone needs to work on their editing and construction skills…that gown “could” have been great…if someone like a Ralph Rucci had exectuted it!

  • Chartreusite

I don’t think it’s the best shade for her, but good for her for going so boldly declarative. I appreciate the risk of wearing a bright canary yellow dress on a red carpet, anywho. Hunger Games has always been her style breakthrough, so I’m eager to see her deliver fierce every step of the way.

  • quiltrx

Yikes, that color is awful, and I don’t really like the design of the gown either.
At any rate, it needed a big-ass necklace. Preferably one of those with colorful jewels (I’m dashed if I can remember who made those that we saw a while back).

  • scoobynacks

I didn’t see anybody mention the fact that it smooshes her breasts. One is spilling out on her left side in fact. You can see it in the first and third pics especially. The cut outs are getting the attention on the bodice but that’s not its only crime.
