Drew Barrymore in Vivienne Westwood at the 2013 LACMA Art + Film Gala

Posted on November 04, 2013

Girl, no.

Drew Barrymore attends the LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala honoring David Hockney and Martin Scorsese, held at LACMA in Los Angeles, California in Vivienne Westwood.

Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Fall 2013 Collection

Absolutely not. You want to wear something comfy and loose on the red carpet? Go right ahead (as if you needed our permission), but Snuggies will never be fabulous, dear. No matter who makes them. Oh, and your shoes just don’t go. Not even a little bit. Also: that hairstyle takes away all your character and makes you go all generic. And you look like you smeared your lips with Vaseline.

Where is our Drew?  Come back, sweetie. Come back to fabulous.

    • Scroll Down “OH!”.
I was fully prepared to yell at her for a big, shapelessly draped top. But this is a sheet! We do not wear sheets to a Gala! Someone finally wears an interesting necklace and it’s now, with this? I feel so robbed.

      • zenobar

I really enjoyed your use of The Royal ‘We’.

      • decormaven

Har har! That necklace is beyond beyond. It’s got to be a long-lost prop from “Plan 9 from Outer Space.”

      • ChristySchiff

I heard “We do not wear sheets to a Gala” in the voice of Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own. So funny!

    • AC Simons

      What’s the shmatta, Drew?

    • Jessica Freeman

She doesn’t even look like herself…and not even the belt would have helped this “dress”.

    • zenobar

Oh Drew, keep fanning those baby bump rumors. (…Is that the Ubiquitous Gucci Naked Big Bird Dress right behind her? I’m seeing a lot of sideboob and feathery bits.)

      • You’re really not somebody in Hollywood if you don’t keep them guessing. It is what is done.

        • demidaemon

Yes, now even tacky-ass E-list reality stars are getting into it, if WWHL last night is any sign. Yes, I watched the RHOA last night. It was late and my inhibitions were low. Don’t shame me too much.

      • marlie

That shot of sideboob was distracting.

      • Sharon Newland

I just read in an article today that her rep has confirmed the pregnancy.

      • filmcricket

It is the top version of the UGNBBD. The Fug Girls have a shot of the full thing: it’s Amber Valletta in the top, with SATIN PANTS. The whole thing needs to be seen to be believed. My eyes are still burning.

    • Little_Olive

Serving muumuu realness. It’s the shoes that appall me.

      • Yes, they are TURRIBLE. They show an frightening lack of coordination.

    • filmcricket

I am convinced she’s preggers again, she’s been appearing in a lot of billowy stuff.

I love those shoes (but not with this dress) and I kind of love the idea of a haute couture Snuggie. However, I hate that dusty rose shade and really dislike pink and black together, so…

    • Kelly

High-fashion muumuus? I don’t think so. But as bad as her get-up is, look at those people in the background of the last pic. What the hell are *they* wearing? Suddenly Drew’s mess is almost endearing.

      • zenobar

        Bondage Parrot.

    • Lori

I was prepared to give this to her, assuming that rumors are true and she’s pregnant, but no. It’s a sheet and I have no idea what made anyone think those shoes went with it. I love her, but no amount of love can save this.

      • shirab

US magazine reports that her publicist says she is indeed pregnant. If one is to believe US, that is.

        • Karen Belgrad

          People Magazine just confirmed it.

        • Heather

Still, that is no excuse for wearing a patterned toga. There are all kinds of cute, flattering maternity dresses. Plus she’s what, maybe 4 months along? It’s not like her water is about to burst.

    • nannypoo

Thanks must be given to the costume department from Grey Gardens.

      • BKagainwiththesweatpants

THIS. Serving up Little Edie realness.

        • YoungSally

          Almost more big Edie.

      • bravobravp

You know they could get her for this east hampton. Do you know that?

    • SewingSiren

Except for the shoes (which are utterly and completely wrong) I love it.

      • Curious as to why? I wouldn’t ask a stranger, but we are people. Explain yourself Kitten : )

        • SewingSiren

I love the dress because it suits Drew’s style , Boho la Child actor en eccentric Barrymore kind of way. I think this is her, not some stylist. I hate the shoes because they go against the easy breezy grain of the dress.

          • YOU’RE WRONG!! Ha, I’m just kiddin’ with you Sewing Siren. I agree, it has her definite style. It’s only the extreme billowing that is bumming me out. Happy Monday! xo

          • marlie

I agree with you on a couple of things… this is definitely “her”, and not some stylist’s interpretation of her. And the shoes (while awesome on their own), are too edgy for this easy-breezy look. BUT… this particular caftan-ish dress just isn’t doing it for me.

But A+ for showing your work. 😉

    • Better this than the side and underboob of whoever is behind her in the last pic.

    • mjude

      I adore Drew but WTF?

    • clatie

She looks like Mrs. Roper if she had to put on her caftan in a big hurry so it was all twisted up.

    • I love this – I feel like the (too mature) caftan is something she’s been moving towards for years. The pendant and other accessories don’t really work though.

      • Janet B

I was thinking she should save this look for when she hits her 80’s.

    • Julie Ree

Usually it’s GTNYD, but today it is GTNYS- is it really anybody’s Snuggie. I think not.

    • Tanya Wade

No, the shoes don’t go. But I kind of adore Caftan and Medallion Realness Drew.

    • Heather B.

She looks like she could be Adele’s sister with that hair.

      • marlie

        My thought too!

    • AlisonS

I swear in that very first picture (and the thumbnail) I thought I was looking at Carrie Fisher.

      • Targettaste

I thought it was mislabeled! I couldn’t see Drew at all until the closeup. is it just the hair that makes her generic, as the uncles say? Where is her Drewness?

    • LipstickForPigs

This is the best her head has looked in a while. Motherhood agrees with her…speaking of motherhood, is she hiding something under this “dress”? Did I miss an announcement?

      • mshesterp

Agreed! I think her headsuit is looking fabulous. So bouncy and shiny! Now, from the neck down…

    • crash1212

Huh. I sort of love this on her. Obviously, the shoes are fab, but totally don’t go and the clutch is generic – but the high end caftan/muumuu – rock on Drew! This seems totally her to me. I love the fabric, the neckline and the garment has some interesting seaming that keeps it from Mrs. Roper territory to my eye and the hair is healthy and fabulous. Let Drew live, people.

    • teensmom99

      Next step in her Edie-lution.

    • MilaXX

I looked at his and just laughed. I understand if she’s not getting back to her pre baby weight and wants to feel a bit comfortable in what she wears. As far as caftans go, this is actually pretty nice. It’s just that between that, the hair and the first pair I grabbed out the closet shoes, she looks like a middle aged suburban housewife. Loose the necklace. It’s hiddy. Pull the hair up in a ponytail, and find some shoes that go with the outfit and I can forgive the caftan. Also dial back a coat or two on the gloss.

      • marlie

The print is really pretty and could have potential, but in this incarnation, it’s a fail.

      • littlemac8

OMG!!! Thank you! You are the first to proclaim the hiddy of that thing around her neck. It could almost be a Flavor Flav clock!

    • SugarSnap108

Mrs. Roper’s night on the town.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Holy Mrs. Roper, Drew! I love her hair and makeup, but that dress is a big old no.

    • Charles

This just oozes “old society matron” to me.

    • Maybe if she’d worn the belt with it?

    • cocohall

I’m on the side of loving it too. Which makes for a small-sided team, this morning, I grant you, but sometimes a girl just wants to wear a lot of flowy beautiful fabric and not have to hold in her tummy whether she is hiding a real baby OR a food baby (which is what we call our tummies around here when we have Indulged). I think the placement of the pattern with the black swoosh near her face helps define the dress. However, I cannot make an argument for the shoes. I can give crazy thumbs up for her hair and face which look radiant.

      • mixedupfiles

I think the hugeness could work if it were still the funky shape, but a lot shorter.

        She does look radiant.

    • tereliz

      Girl, that’s not your caftan.

    • Kayemwhy yo

      Toga Toga Toga!

    • boweryboy

WIthout the belt it looiks like a bed sheet.

    • ashtangajunkie

What a fabulous tent. Not quite camping weather though.

    • fringebenefit

I think she’s making it work. She has what it takes and she’s working it.

    • Sunraya

I love it, because it is Drew wearing it. It is real, it is her. She is a hippie, anyway, and she looks happy and authentic. I do love when she does “Glamour Girl,” but she looks happy in this.

    • marlie

Well… I think her makeup looks fabulous. And in some shots, her hair looks great. But the dress. NO. And the shoes are fabulous, but not with this getup. She should send them to me, because they’d be “perfect” with what I’m wearing today.

      • demidaemon

I totally agree with you on the shoes. They need a nice pair of jeans or tight pants or something.

    • Mary Lauer

Mrs. Roper called. She wants her caftan/muumuu back. 8-(

    • ThaliaMenninger

Are the Mamas and the Papas staging a revival?

      • demidaemon

        Mama Cass Realness!

    • formerlyAnon

I think the head is purposefully pretty & generic because the body-obscuring mumu was supposed to be bold and interesting (and unusual for an actress of any age, let alone hers.) But while a departure, it looks too much like (as has been stated) a king size bed sheet draped about her person to get credit for interest or impact.

Part of the problem is that she just doesn’ have the height to pull off something like this unless it’s proportioned by a genius.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Westwood is making sheets and quilts now?

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      “And then there’s Maude”.

    • mhlmh

I think she looks beautiful. Yeah, the shoes are not great. But otherwise, I love it.

    • aahlife

Drew looks refreshed. Among other signs, she used to have small bags under her eyes and they are now absent. Overall unfortunate, though the work is well done, she lost much of her Drewness and looks generically pretty.

    • Erica

My theory is she’s pregnant, and she really doesn’t want to confirm it yet, but she’s showing quite a bit–2nd child so showing earlier? Twins? Been there myself, you are big early. Now, does that really excuse this caftan? Perhaps not. Maybe instead a shorter caftan with some skinny-at-the-bottom pants. The colors look nice, though.

    • Synnae

I actually remember thinking when I saw this on ONTD – as part of a post of the red carpet @Lacma – what a nice change. The print is bold, it is very her and she does look mighty comfortable wearing it. Maybe it is hiding a baby or some baby weight but whatever it is not black and it is bold. The shoes, bag and necklace hurt though. She could have spiced it up a bit better. I really like her hair and make-up though. No issues whatsoever with the vaseline 😉

But that said – and mind you I still love Drew for not going black or see-through or both- seeing the much more casual and curve hugging catwalk version, I really prefer that. Also Anglomania – Viv’s cheapest line – now this dress is so going on my summer shopping wish list!

    • Judy_S

I don’t mind the, uh, caftan, but the makeup and hair. as you note, make one of the most distinctively beautiful women in Hollywood look “generic.” I was wondering if she’d somehow had some “work” done to make her face boring.

      • Sabin

I was about to ask the same thing. Someone oughtta be fired.

    • Shawn EH

Mommy Drew is pretending she’s 80?

    • ChristySchiff

Any company smart enough to use “Come back to fabulous” as their slogan would win me as a customer in a heartbeat.

Title for the sequel to TLo’s book?

    • KinoEye

Maybe this is a belated Halloween costume. Fortune teller, perhaps? Retiree?

    • lalahartma

      I like it!

    • kittenwithaquip

I read the title and thought, “Yay! Drew Barrymore! She’ll look so cute!”
      Then I scrolled.
No, girl, NO. Nobody really “rocks” a caftan, nobody. Personally, I like a little Mrs. Roper action from time to time, but I stop short of a full blown caftan. While i realize she just probably can’t *see* her feet in that thing, the second she put those two pieces together she should have had a visceral, “No, girl. NO.” feeling. Was there an accessory wall at the even where people just grab what they want and throw it on? Because even when I pretend that she is not wearing a caftan all of the other poor choices rear up and offend my eye.
Pull it together, Drew. You’re beautiful and fun and I bet there is a fabulous curvy body under that awful schmatta. You can do this.

    • melanie0866

      And then there’s Maude!

    • alyce1213

I had to stop after the beautiful face and hair, breathe, and skip down quickly to the shoes. It’s cool for Drew to wear a caftan, very much her style, and she may be pregnant or up few pounds — but not this caftan. I don’t like how the print is used, the thing is falling wrong on her body.

    • Imasewsure

I used to love her when she was quirky and a bit bad ass…. hopefully this is just a phase… but what an UGLY PHASE!!

    • Qitkat

I find myself on the side of the kittens who love this. Now if Kerry Washington showed up in this, we would rightly be horrified, but on Drew…as another kitten said, this is hippie Drew which she has always been anyway. And the blingy shiny hood ornament around her neck just seals the deal. Anyone out there remember when people did steal hood ornaments to wear as jewelry? Just me? Huh. [slinks back into her katkave]

      • formerlyAnon

” remember when people did steal hood ornaments to wear as jewelry? Just me?”
        Um, no. Not just you.

        • Qitkat

*g* I just knew if anyone remembered it would be you fAnon! Two little innocent maids were we…

          • formerlyAnon

I don’t know what you might be implying, Ms. Qitkat. I was such a good and virtuous influence as a youth that I’d probably have had no friends at all had I not occasionally managed to be entertaining! 😉

    • Drew, if you bring back the muu-muu, you will be the craftiest of the caftgans.

    • Danielle

She sure is glowing. From the neck up, perfection.

    • LauraWL

I sort of love all of this. Nope, I unabashedly love all of this. I would actually wear this to an event, granted I am 6 months pregnant…

    • Uncle Spike

Yes, this is a misstep from Miss Drew. But I do have to say, the Adele vibe I’m getting from her hair and makeup is giving me life. Seriously gorge.
But it must be asked: if this is nothing more than a (fabulously-designed) shapeless sheet, then is it Drew’s fault, or is it Vivienne Westwood’s?
*ducks to avoid flying tomatoes and stilettos from VW’s adoring fans*

    • cakecakecake

      that is all.

    • AzSportsGirl

Are you SURE this is Drew? She’s unrecognizeable!

    • Laylalola

This is the second time today I happened on a thumbnail of Drew Barrymore and honestly didn’t recognize her, thought she was some Real Housewife both times.

    • FunButNutz

AP just announced that Drew is Pregnant. An excuse?

    • sk8tfan

When I saw the thumbnail, my first thought was “wow, Carrie Fisher looks the best she has in ages!” Then I realized it was Drew Barrymore. Probably not the reaction Drew was going for.

    • snarkykitten

ship this one off to HBC

    • Not applicable

she stole Bea Arthur’s death shroud.

    • Fordzo

May I chime in and say how much I love her makeup line, Flower? I’ve been really happy with everything I’ve tried except the brow pencil, and that’s only because I thought it was too small. More like an eyeliner and I prefer chunkier pencils for my brows.

      PSA over.

    • The shoes and necklace have nothing to do with the dress and confuse me. I understand she’s pregnant again, so I don’t hate the dress as much as I would – but I doubt it needs to be quite that oversized.

    • Noah

I don’t even know what shape we’re dealing with here.

    • Trickytrisha

Ugh to the shoes, but I have to confess I like the caftan thing. Maybe because I wear them around the house all the time.

    • boweryboy

If only she wore a belt. It wouldn’t look so much like a bedsheet.

Although my first thought reminded me of that tumblr of guys who turned their wide legged basketball shorts into one sleeved dresses. It’s pretty funny.

    • Morales Mike

Turns out she just announced she’s pregnant but still, this looks like a paint tarp.

      • MilaXX

Yup just got an announcement from People mag. She’s expecting her second.

    • MoreShoes

Is she pregnant? I actually like the dress o the model, and I’m not a Westwood fan.

    • Nicola Anna Molly Page

I truly thought that was Adele. I think it’s the hair and shapeless dress. I love both ladies but honey, no.

    • frannyprof

Call me crazy, but I LOVE this. I think she looks stylish, sexy, happy, etc. It’s Drew. However, if this was on someone like Maggie Gyllenhaal, I would be screaming “foul” just like the rest of ya.

    • jjjoy

i love this. it’s the perfect thing to wear to an event like this. the shoes are wrong though.

      • Fannie Wolston

I agree! But all i can come up for a shoe is a platform leathervelvet bootie, or a roman sandal. options are limited beyond barefoot, naked sandal wedge? challenging.

    • kat89

Well, I guess today’s pregnancy announcement explains the tent, but maternity clothes have come so far from when I was pregnant many years ago. Why do this when there are so many nicer options?

    • Alison

This looks crazy but I love every bit of it, including the lips.

    • bertkeeter

      The face…can’t even recognize her???

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Oh honey, no-not designer caftans. If anything ever screamed “schmatta” this look does.

      • DeTrop

My thoughts exactly. She made couture look like a ‘schmatta’. VW must be weeping.

    • quiltrx

Wow, this look really derailed somewhere between the model and Drew.

    • LadyLuck777

Gads. Although she is gorgeous, she needs to pack this up and ship it off to Randy Quaid.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like it, but the shoes clash with the style of the dress.

    • Paula

Apparently Drew is pregnant again.. Maybe that’s the main reason for the flowing dress. I did not recognize her in these pictures – the times we are seeing her on TCM with Robert Osborne she has dark brown hair, little makeup and – to me anyway – kind of dowdy not- very- colorful clothing. Personally I prefer this fashion here (except the necklace) to some of the celebrities who wear skin tight short dresses, no stockings and stilettos.

    • DeTrop

I’m getting a Rene Russo vibe here. I love Rene Russo and I love Drew Barrymore. I’d like to keep them separate.

    • ItAin’tMe

Celebrities are Just Like Us…they have fat days.
The shoe choice is beyond understanding.

    • gg80302

I guess if I had to go to some red carpet event and was really in the mood to stay in and watch the latest episode of Homeland, this is what i woudl have thrown on…minus the shoes of course, they seem a bit incongruous with that vibe.
