Cover Girl: Nicole Kidman for Harper’s Bazaar Australia Magazine

Posted on November 13, 2013

Miss Nicole is a pretty little holiday princess on the cover of Harper’s Australia.

Nicole Kidman covers the December 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar Australia magazine in Armani Privé photographed by James White.

To be honest, our first reaction was that this looked a little silly, even if she does look pretty in the dresses.

But then we found out it it’s all an homage to this December 1992 Harper’s cover with a very young Kate Moss:

Which is all well and good, but Miss Nicole, pretty as she is, is no Kate Moss. And we think her puny little top knot can’t compare to Kate’s glorious hair bow.

  • Latin Buddy

Ew. I immediately (and unfairly) thought of Sienna Miller in The September Issue and that’s not a good thing, Nicole.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I have loved and respected Miss Nicole as an actress and a beauty for decades now. But this is just ‘eh’.

  • Gaby

Funny, I didn’t know this Kate Moss cover but I thought the tiny Nicole was an homage to the famous McQueen hologram of Kate Moss before I scrolled down.

  • SewingSiren

The Harper’s Bazaar covers during the Liz Tilberis era were all beautiful. I remembered this one with Kate Moss right away when I saw the Nicole Kidman one. The low and behold I scroll down and thereitis.

    • jif

And not just the covers. Bazaar really stood out back then.

  • Katie Wolf

There are beautiful actresses and then, there are Supermodels. Pow!

    • Sabin

I really, really miss the supermodels.

      • Shannon Beamer

Me too. It’s just not the same.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

Me too. The era of Supermodels was amazing.

    • Gayer Than Thou

Until right now, I never really “got” the difference between actresses and models on covers. Nicole is pulling us in with her eyes, because they are expressive and as an film actress they connect us to her character. Fascinating in motion, but less so when still. Kate, on the other hand, has no interest in connecting to us in anyway; she is using her whole face as an aesthetic object and aiming for impact rather than storytelling. Or something. It made more sense before I started typing.

      • mlle

I think what you’re getting at is that actresses can be artful in photos, whereas models ARE the art.

        • Gayer Than Thou

You said it much better than I did — thanks!

  • lexilexi

I dream of Jeannie in that bubble.

    • 3boysful

Precisely. My first thought. The skimpy top knot and exaggerated eye. Not so hot, IMO.

    • cocohall

I know, she’s already done Bewitched. Move on to Jeanie, and then That Girl, and maybe Marianne from Gilligan’s Island. Make it a Kidman franchise. Except for the fact that Bewitched was unwatchable.

  • sagecreek

Nah. She’s too old for this look. As is mostly anyone over 16.

  • annabelle archer

Since I tend to think of Nicole as Ice Queen, this almost works. But it’s so lacking in face giving and they’ve photoshopped/kindly lit her into a soft oblivion, it falls flat. The eyeliner is doing the heavy lifting here.

    • lexilexi

Except for some reason all I see is NOSE.

    • fursa_saida

She also just looks so TENSE, compared to Kate’s kind of languid attitude.

      • annabelle archer

To borrow from Ferris Bueller, if you stuck a lump of coal up her ass, in two weeks you’d have a diamond.

  • hughman

Kate is a glamorous diva holding a snow globe of her decorating her manse. Nicole is a petulant snow demon holding a figure trapped in a time bubble unsure of how to keep her balance. Big diff.

  • International Model

I WANT A COVER WHERE I’M HOLDING MYSELF IN A GLASS BALL. (Sorry for the all caps, but so much want!)

  • hillmad

Nicole is styled like a young ballerina with the top knot and stagey eye makeup. It’s not becoming.

  • Bridget Smith

I am very, very glad that the penciled-on eyebrow has gone out of fashion.

  • Miss WKS

Kate’s head is slightly tilted back because she’s a model and knows how to work that slightest of angles. Nicole on the other hand didn’t and the shot ends up looking stiff and cold.

    • twocee

Nice observation. I didn’t catch that until you mentioned it and you’re right, it makes a huge difference.

    • 3boysful

Nic looks like we caught her with this imprisoned dancer, and if we don’t scram quickly, the same will happen to us.

    • fursa_saida

She’s also holding herself with massive tension. She looks like she’s in pain or terrified because she’s so locked up into a column, which also provides less interest for the composition of the cover as a whole.

      • smallgirlsaretrouble

That’s where my eyes were drawn as well, ie Nicole’s neck. It becomes extra obvious when you compare her with the Kate picture.

  • Clueless_Jock

    Fonssagrives. The end.

    • Qitkat

      The model or the photographer?

  • starrika

Blasphemy, but – I like the Nicole cover better.

    • Qitkat

I don’t know that I like it better, but I do think she looks very pretty here, while acknowledging truth in some of the other BK’s comments.

    • Erica

I actually like them both. One fire, one ice. They both fit those roles quite well. Kate is the better model, but that’s a given (NK’s eyebrows are better, though).

      • murt

I think they’ve intentionally given Kate pencil thin eyebrows in that picture – they go with the ’30s nostalgia feeling they’re trying to evoke.

  • mjude

    no matter, I love it

  • Sarah

Nicole is giving “I’m just a girl” face, which is kinda silly. KM is giving FACE face, like a pro.

  • OrigamiRose

“She is no Kate Moss.” And that is why you are my substitute big brothers :)

  • marlie

The snow globes are dumb, but I think Nic looks gorgeous – even better than Kate (but I can’t stand KM, so I’m probably biased). Though I think Nicole would have looked rather striking in a saturated color like Kate’s red.

  • Sabin

And the little snowglobe Kate has just a hint of Dovima, whereas snowglobe Nicole is reminiscent of one of those “awkward family photos” shots.

    • slizzy

      Awkward family photos – yes!

  • quiltrx

    Holiday Barbie realness.

  • JDreesen

sorry to sound dense, but – why this homage? and why now? is Australia really just now getting to 1992?

  • alyce1213

I want models back on the covers of fashion magazines!

    • decormaven

  • kimmeister

No doubt that KM kicks her butt, but Nicole is pulling off the top knot much better than I would’ve expected.

  • MilaXX

The top knot could have used more vloumne, but it’s an okay cover.

  • crash1212

Kate is perfection. Nicole – girl, that is not your hairstyle. Kate is all languid and come-hither. Nicole is…..not. She almost looks like a really harsh wax figure.

  • ballerinawithagun

I immediately thought of Kate also, so glad you mentioned this 1992(???!!!) cover. I used to bring up this cover whenever people not in the business would question Kate Moss modeling. Perfection!

    • Qitkat

And to me, Kate in the snow globe reminds me of an earlier era, perhaps the 30s or 40s. It just feels so vintage (in a good way) with the pose and the white tree.

  • Calinda_L

At least she isn’t posing as Grace Kelly homaging (not a word) Kate Moss.

  • bukker

I’m glad you posted the Kate Moss cover because I immediately had a deja vu moment.

  • formerlyAnon

She may as well do these princessy looks while she’s only “aging out” of them and not “too old.” I don’t care that photoshop will erase most signs of aging, there IS a “too old” if you want to cultivate an image of elegance and fashion-savvy, as she seems to do.

    • not applicable

      Photoshop and botox…

  • Rhonda Shore

The comparison to Kate Moss just makes it all so sad. There is only one Kate.

  • uprightcitizen

I do much prefer the placement of Kidman in front of the BAZAAR logo instead of the way it’s smacked across Kate Moss’s face. There’s also the fact that Moss’s dress has been placed behind her shoulders in such a way that the dress defines her skin and you don’t have so much pale skin placed on a white background. I think if they had done the more obvious solution … put Kidman in a brilliant emerald green (which would suit her magnificently), then the two covers would have been on a par with each other.

  • Violentcello

Maybe it’s because I saw this after the Campari post, but all I’m seeing in the Moss cover is Miss Uma.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s pretty, but Kate did it better.

  • Tom Markiewicz

Does anyone else think she looks scarily like Taylor Swift? Maybe it’s the overly lined eyes and milady vacant open mouth, but they could play a mother/daughter quite believably.

    • poggi

I thought Avril Lavigne, but she does look a little Swiftian too.

    • pookiesmom

      I thought Emma Stone.

  • filmcricket

I can barely tell that’s Kate Moss. If you’d said it was a heavily-airbrushed Uma Thurman I’d have believed you.

  • not applicable

Trapped in a bubble? Frozen in time? Are they tempting us to make that connection to Nicole?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Looking at Nicole’s retouched face, I wonder why they left those pulling lines on her neck. I don’t mind them as they are real, but they don’t seem to go with the line-less face. She looks good though. I do like the Kate Moss cover better but a lot of that has to do with the red dress.

    • mlle

Maybe to allay criticisms about overshopping?

  • ashtangajunkie

Kate Moss! I might still purchase magazines if they still had models on the covers. Super models. I love models.

  • Qitkat

This may be a nitpick, and not true for the actual cover, but I don’t like that we do not see the complete arc of the bubble ball in Nicole’s cover. It’s a design mistake.

    • slizzy

Wow, I hadn’t noticed that at first but now it’s all I see. Weird.

  • DTLAFamilies

Am I allowed to hate both covers?

    • formerlyAnon

Of course! Our wheels around here turn on loathing, dislike and quibbles – enthusiasm and adoration are, I’d estimate, less than 30% of the juice, and it’d be less if we subtracted out the Beautiful People of the Male Persuasion.

  • Imasewsure

Wow I forgot how amazing Kate Moss is and was…. liking Nicole’s too but the non-model is showing a little

  • MikeW_Vegas

Kate Did it better.. (much as I love Nicole)

  • Trickytrisha

Despite the same format, Kate was super young, 18 or so. Comparing Nicole in her 40s to a teenager is hardly fair, but I think she (Nicole) looks totally glorious here. So did Kate, of course, but would she now? Not so sure that Kate Moss is *Kate Moss* anymore. Nicole may have overdone the visits to her docs but she’s still among the loveliest celebs around.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

There’s no comparison. That Kate Moss cover is divine.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

The heavy eyeliner goes against the ethereal feeling of the dress. And she sure ain’t no Kate Moss.

  • jspark

It’s creepy how young she looks here.

  • GTrain

Damn Kate’s cover is FIERCE. Nicole is just pale, washed out, paleness to me. Pretty but blah.

  • unbornfawn

Doesn’t even come close to the original. “Perfection” indeed Ms. Moss.

  • Samantha

Why do you think they left the “Perfection!” off?

  • bertkeeter

She needs to stay home sometime n chill with the kids and hubby…so tired of the same ole same ole faces on every cover and red carpet…GIVE IT A REST!

  • AuntHo

An homage to a (then) younger woman in which the older woman comes out the loser? Ugh, HB.

  • French_Swede

Sorry, Nicole has it all over Kate Moss. KM’s wandering eyes always irritate me.

  • ItsDicey

Makes me nostalgic for Nicole’s original face.

  • steeg of their own

Nicole, I really wish the dress you featured on that cover had been better used. Those shoulders are beautiful, and fuck you for aping Kate Moss when that dress could have been lovely in original photographs.

  • Kirsty

I loved the glamour of the supermodels of the early 90s. The ones who gave face – Linda Evangelista, Shalom Harlow, Stella Tennant, Nadja Auermann, Tatjana Patitz. I was a teenager then and I adored the glamour. I miss models, it was far better when they were on the covers of magazines.

  • sweetlilvoice

I think the globe in Kate’s hand with the Christmas tree is much better than the globe with just Nicole dancing. Nicole in the globe just looks strange.

  • StillGary

Whaaa? HB is playing homage to itself — 1992 — that’s rich!

  • valerie747

The side-by-side is very revealing. Thanks for that.

  • amf0001

if Nicole knew how she would suffer in the comparison, I’m pretty sure she would have never agreed to this idea. Her version looks both eh and silly, while the Kate Moss one is sublime.

  • Cate

I find the homage a little strange and random. Doing an homage to Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn? Fine. Doing an homage to Kate Moss, who is seven years younger than you and took the photo twenty years ago, when she was a teenager? Uh….

  • Gatto Nero

    Kate for the win.
Plus — Nicole looks freakishly ageless, and not in a good way.

  • guest2visits

Kate’s cover is pretty great. I think the blast of light from the back and Nicole’s awkward sort of lean takes away from her rendition. It doesn’t have the easy fluidity of the Kate cover.

  • Hes Man

Nicole Kidman’s has a Snow Queen vibe, I’m in love with it Kate Moss’s dress looks badly pasted on her body. And those insect like eyes are annoying. Prefer Nicole’s classy, freaky and alluring

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

She looks exactly like Amy Adams.

  • murt

Maybe it’s the angle of the shot or photoshop, but Nicole looks like she’s got her old ’90s face back here, including her old nose.
