Cover Girl: Jennifer Lawrence for Madame Figaro Magazine

Posted on November 20, 2013

We thought we’d take a break from featuring Jen on the red carpet in a Dior something, since we’re all kinda tapped out on that one. Instead, let’s look at Jen on the cover of a magazine in a Dior something.

“The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence covers the latest issue of Madame Figaro magazine in Christian Dior photographed by Daniel Jackson.

“One of the dangers in the film industry is that things are too fast, aging and depriving have lived. I do not want to burn the stages of my life. I want to keep it simple, you see, I do not have an assistant. One that helps me is my best friend,” Lawrence explains. “At the end of a day of shooting, I can go home and hang out with her, do what we do in 22 years… and not share time with someone who works for me.”

Looks great on the cover and on the runway, but it’s clearly not red carpet material, like most of the Dior she’s worn for the Catching Fire poledance.

  • Paigealicious

It looks like she was saying, “Hands in my pockets, like this?” when they took the shot. Dress looks great, though.

  • Danielle

What on EARTH is going on in the midsection?

    • Angela_the_Librarian

They really should’ve went with a different color fabric. It’s too close to a sun-burnt skin tone as is.

      • kimmeister

Looks like she has a bad rash.

    • Nicole

      I really don’t know anymore…

  • foodycatAlicia

Wow – that’s a really ropy translation! And her face is doing Gaga’s sad clown.

    • Kimbolina

At first I didn’t realize it was a translation and I was thinking, what is up with that quote??

      • demidaemon

Yeah, me too. I was like, “What English is this?” So confusing.

        • H2olovngrl

I still have no idea what the hell she’s talking about.

          • foodycatAlicia

@Judy_S:disqus provides a more grammatically correct version further down the thread.

    • kmk05

I really dislike her face here, especially her open mouth.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Looks like she tucked a dinner napkin into the collar of her dress. Please Jen PLEASE break up with Dior.

    • 3boysful

Erica, you with the napkin and Tracy M on the slack-jawed “Huh” have said it all for me.

      Not her best.

  • Tracy M

“Huh?” is generally not a flattering cover look.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I know, they really botched this one up for her.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Her expression can most charitably be described as catatonic.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Uh… she looks like she feels ill. Not liking this cover at all.

  • Rhonda Shore

This Dior marriage needs a divorce.

  • alyce1213

    That cover! CALL 911!!
    She’s very ill.

  • alexandrian

OOohh I am officially tired of JLaw. I like her but seeing her all the time especially in awful outfits…

And honestly I would like to know what the directors/stylists at Dior are drinking or inhaling

  • MilaXX

That cover looks awful. Even as an editorial look that top is not for gals with boobs.

  • annabelle archer

Stoned at a lobster buffet does not a great cover shot make.

    • alyce1213

Looks like she ate the bad clam hors d’oeuvres.

      • annabelle archer

Moments away from hurling. Or like she has a head cold.

    • martha

I wish I were stoned at a lobster buffet, right now.

  • Anna_Cecilia

    She looks hungover.

I love Jennifer but what in the what is up lately?!! I didn’t think it was possible to make her look bad but there are apparently teams of people who are hell bent in doing so.

  • JasmineAM

Her face on the cover is awful. Also, her quote looks like it was run through babel fish a few times.

  • International Model

Dryly: Glamour. Dior makes the most extravagant right pockets in the world. Just cannot get enough, I wave my tiny pennant, yay.

  • Karen Belgrad

Besides the Mark-Ballas-guppy-mouth expression, I can only read her quote in Sissy-as-Loretta voice “It’s all happenin’ too fast…”

  • Judy_S

A danger in the film industry is that everything can start moving too fast. You can get older without having let yourself live. I don’t want to burn out. I want to keep it simple. Look, I don’t have an assistant; my best friend is the one who helps me. At the end of a day filming, I can go home and relax with her, doing what 22-year-olds do… but not having to spend all my time with employees.

    • foodycatAlicia

That is a MUCH better translation!

    • Anna Vasquez

Oof. Thank you. Makes much more sense now!

    • alyce1213

      Beaucoup mieux.

  • shirab

    Why is her torso sunburned?

  • mjude

I don’t care for this at all

  • 8daysaweek

Love her but all of this is bad. The torso had me staring at it perplexed, trying to figure out what was going on there, for much longer than anyone would want. And the quote sounds stiff and detached – not at all like the Jennifer Lawrence people love so much.

ETA: Just realized the quote is a bad translation! That makes me feel a little better, at least. But the look is still just not working here. Dior and JLaw is looking more and more like a bad fashion marriage every day.

    • filmcricket

I’m assuming that’s a translation of a translation – and French does tend to be more formal than English.

      • alyce1213

I bet you’re right. No one speaks English that way.

  • Nicholas

All that photoshopping makes her look like Morgan Saylor.

  • Latin Buddy

Can we collectively write a petition or letter to Rachel Zoe, telling her to stop ruining this poor girl’s career?

  • Tatiana Luján

Why are they putting so much makeup on her eyebrows?

    • foodycatAlicia

My guess is that they were short of time, so they did her eyebrows, no other makeup and shoved her in front of the camera with the makeup scarf still tucked into her blouse.

      • Tatiana Luján

That must have been what happened.

  • Sarah

I don’t understand any of that article blurb. I usually love her but she looks like she just got punched in the face.

    • marlie

Bad translation. @Judy_S:disqus has a much better translation that actually makes sense.

  • barbarienne

Whose face is that on her head, because the JLaw I’ve seen up to now has life in her eyes. Shame on whoever chose that image for the cover.

  • marlie

The clothes make for a great cover look. My only comment is that the pink part of the top is so close to a flesh-tone that I first thought it was actual midriff, but fabric. It would have been nice if the color were more obviously NOT a skin tone.

I’m not a fan of the slightly dazed, half-open mouth look, though.

BUT, this is the best she’s looked in Dior. Someone mentioned it previously that it works for her in print photography, just not on the red carpet.

  • boweryboy

Wow. That quote is a hot mess.

  • Sarah

Hrm. She looks alarmed from the neck up, and bizarro from the neck down. So, pretty normal for these days. And that quote, wtf? I don’t compute.

    • alyce1213

      Judy_S did a better re-translation downthread.

      • Sarah

Oh, okay. Phew. I was seriously worried about JLaw’s poor brain tissues after this press tour, for a minute.

  • tereliz

Her face says, “So we’re really gonna do this, huh? In this dress? With this hair? And almost no makeup on? All right, then.”

I think the fresh-faced look could have worked if the cover was just her head. The dress is ridiculous and the white bib of the dress makes her head look like it’s floating.

  • DeniseSchipani

I’m thinking that quote is a bad translation,English into french and back again? Maybe by the same person who translates Chinese into English on my kids’ toys’ instructions? Also: bad photoshop! that’s not her waist!

    • pookiesmom

My EXACT two reactions to this post. 1) THAT IS NOT HER WAIST. 2) WTF is this quote?!

  • NMMagpie

    She looks like a kid.

  • pookiesmom

I think it would be kind of weird having my best friend act as my assistant. A little too insular/entourage-y.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Jeeze, I know she’s pole dancing for the new movie, but I am officially JLaw’d out! (Not that it’s TLo’s fault, they’re just givin’ the kittens what they want! *M’Wah!*)

  • mrspotts66

i think they could have selected a MUCH better shot of her.
    i am disappointed.

  • decormaven

Not clicking on the thumbnails any more if they feature Dior.

  • Jessi03

    Gotta love Google translate

  • Jaimie

She looks like she’s wearing a mouth guard.

  • LeelaST

That cover photo is horrendous. I hope the copy ready better in French.

  • Trickytrisha

Holy cats on a raft… this cover is atrocious, as is the “dress”. Why oh why are Dior dragging her through their lousy design mud? And where the heck was the stylist… taking an extended vacation while the janitor did the styling? AND who the heck translated her comments? I’d sue if I were her.

  • Clueless_Jock

Tyra Banks needs to teach her how to pose.

  • 3boysful

Meh. I am more interested in “nos recettes inratables”!

  • The Counselor

My first thought was that she looks like she’s just come from the dentist and they used too much novocaine.

  • Caaro3

    Just had ECT, right?

  • jilly_d

that is easily the worst picture of her face I’ve ever seen.

  • bpayne

Is anyone else enjoying the irony that she is promoting Hunger Games with a dinner napkin tucked under her chin? 😉

  • vitaminC

I thought it was Shia LaBeouf in drag. Strange.

  • ovarB

Is this fashion charades?? Let me guess…Oscar Winning Actress who just had her wisdom teeth pulled!!

  • frannyprof

Is it me or is the translation weird?

    • boweryboy

      Definitely not you….

      • Leah Elzinga

translated into Italian then back again? That was straight gibberish.

    • Anne Elise

I legitimately read each sentence several times, trying to make some sense out of it.
Needless to say, I really didn’t succeed. But I got the gist.

  • TAGinMO

Between that face and the badly translated copy, there a major “a little slow” vibe here.

  • formerlyAnon

It is a stretch to believe that of the many, many, many shots of her taken at the photo shoot, this was the best. There was probably a quick test shot for light levels (or whatever they do nowadays) that was better than this.

  • nannypoo

She looks exhausted and just a teeny bit stupid in that cover picture. And I hate the hair and the outfit.

  • Mona_Visa

We need to get our girl away from Dior for a bit. Intervention?

    • MaggieMae

      I’m in. Let’s go.

  • quiltrx

Again, can they PLEASE put her in some of the more classic Dior silhouettes? These arty-farty ones are difficult for anyone to wear, and not exactly her comfort zone. When she loves what she’s wearing, it shows.

    • BuffaloBarbara

Imagine her in a New Look silhouette. I think that kind of thing would be right in her wheelhouse. Of course, this could be because I lust for the New Look to make a comeback.

  • Vera

I all about Team JLaw; she’s my girl crush, but she just isn’t a Dior kind of gal. Imagine Dita Von Teese rocking that dress.

  • DailyDose

    dinner time, Napkin is on!

  • unbornfawn

    A very unflattering photo

  • JauntyJohn

Did they accidentally Photoshop out her teeth?!?

  • LilyPad

She looks like me in my driver’s license photo (NOT a compliment)

  • SewingSiren

    At the dentist.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I think she looks awful on the cover, like she ran out of the dentist’s office (thanks, Sewing SIren) after being blasted in the face with the little rinsing hose. Not a lick of makeup, not a lick of sense to the hair, and that bib… No thank you.

  • hmatz

Does that quote seem garbled to anyone else?

  • MannahattaMamma

look! they airbrushed all the intelligence right out of her face and then mistranslated her comments all to hell. feh. poor girl.

  • Beth Ann

Does she look like she’s channeling Audreybot to anyone else? For a moment, I thought this post would turn into a girl-that’s-not-your-dress one.

  • marishka1

That quote reads like she said it in English, it was translated into Italian, and then translated back into English.

    • Big Bear

What is the thing they ‘do in 22 years’? I mean, trees grow in that time. Are they growing trees?

      • ChristySchiff

Ack! I’ve never grown a tree with any of my friends. Is that what the cool kids are doing now?

      • martha

I think she was saying that they have been friends for 22 years and things are still the same with their friendship. I agree, that quote is an awkward translation.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Oof. Just google-translated the whole thing. Sounds like she probably gave a good interview, but… but…

I like her. I like that she seems to be pretty grounded, and to understand what the heck she’s doing up there.

  • MoHub

    Lobster bib!

  • MoHub

My! We English speakers certainly have polluted the French language, mais non?

  • Lilithcat

She looks about ten in that cover shot. She also looks terrified.

  • bertkeeter

    So last year! Awkward….

  • Sunraya

I don’t understand the dress, and I barely understand the quote.

““One of the dangers in the film industry is that things are too fast, aging and depriving have lived.”

    Can someone interpret for me?

  • styrch

I wish she’d closed her mouth on that cover. She looks vacant.

  • guest2visits

That strange sickly pink in the middle just killed this dress dead for me. The unmade face to go with black and white couture doesn’t appeal to me either.
Also think something is lost in translation for her interview…..
