Claire Danes for Interview Magazine

Posted on November 04, 2013

Miss Claire is serving up late ’70s supermodel realness, in the Lauren Hutton/Shelley Hack mode.

“Homeland” star Claire Danes covers the november 2013 issue of Interview magazine in Christian Dior photographed by Fabien Baron and styled by Karl Templer.

And we are LOVING IT. What a FABULOUS way to style her looks.

On working in television: “I’d actually only done one series before Homeland—and I was 14 when I did it, and we only made 19 episodes—so Homeland has really been my first time aging with a character and experiencing her develop and change. I know that this is not an uncommon story, but I got excited again about television from watching The Wire. That show blew me away; I just could not believe how enormous and layered this world was that they’d created, and how deeply I could delve into it. It was just so thrilling to watch a show like that as an audience member that I became interested in getting involved in something like that on the other side, as a performer. But working on Homeland has been very rewarding. I really enjoy the relationship that an actor has with a team of writers on a show like ours. It’s a very intimate process. You really have to work in tandem.”

On her character Carrie: “She is intuitive, and it’s the paradox of the show that she’s in a clandestine service and in a world of evasion and indirectness and secrecy, but she herself is an incredibly candid, honest, rigorous person. I mean, it’s preposterous at times, but it’s fun because the stakes are always so impossibly high. It’s like jumping on a trampoline—there’s just a lot going on—and those scenes give you a lot of power and license to go wherever you need to go. We have set our own rules, though, as far as what we will do and won’t do, and we’re very careful about them. We know where the lines are and we don’t want to stray too far outside of them.”

Now we want her to play a coked-out model in the late ’70s. We’re thinking she shouldn’t try to rock that gold eyeshadow in real life, though.

Wow, I would have never thought that was Claire Danes. Usually she comes across more intellectual and cerebral, but in this she’s serving some glam.

I didn’t know she had it in her.

    • foodycatAlicia

In the topless pic she’s a naughty Lauren Bacall – great look for her!

    • kim bunchalastnames

did not even recognize her on the cover. inside, the shots are more identifiable, but damn.

  • marlie

Claire looks gorgeous on the cover, and I love that Balenciaga dress on her. And the gold eyeshadow is only to be done with supervision.

  • Victor Beiramar Diniz

    some jerry hall realness, no?

    • Shawn EH

The new DSW commercial is totally running with a Jerry Hall vibe, too!

  • Jessica Freeman

Her hand is straight up like a mannequin hand on the cover. Freaky. Otherwise, she looks fab.

    • Sarah

What I think is freaky is that I have a bracelet that is exactly like that necklace, hence her neck is looking like a wrist automatically. But that is not her fault. Weird, though! And yes, mannequinhand.

  • Sara

She keeps getting more and more beautiful as she gets older. Love that she gives thoughtful responses to questions she’s probably heard a hundred times by now.

  • Barb Ray

Extraordinary styling for an extraordinary performer. Fabulous garments too.

  • hughman

“Claire honey, Ms. Turbeville wants to start shooting soon. Go let Way touch up your eyes, grab a Tab and we’ll get started.”

    • DTLAFamilies

Just googled Turbeville and Way Bandy and thank you! Will be lost in pictures all day…

    • decormaven

Aww, that’s right on the money. Thanks for that trip in the Wayback Machine.

  • KateM

She looks great, but I bet her neck hurt by the end of the shoot.

  • International Model

Claire Danes Disco Single. I can think of nothing I need more of in my life at this moment–ooh! Miniature Mars bar!

  • Sobaika

LOL at comparing Homeland to The Wire!!!

Sorry, was that mean? She looks very good.

    • Qitkat

I’ve never seen The Wire, but a few episodes of Homeland, such as the one in which she interrogates Brody, are as good as television ever gets. If it only could have sustained that excellence. I have read that one prominent writer died, and another recently quit, so that may be the cause of the less than compelling quality now.

      • Sobaika

I only ever enjoyed the first season of Homeland. It got drastically bad and I just couldn’t take it seriously.

        • Qitkat

So you missed the episode I referred to. Q&A, S2E5. Look for it. I think you’ll be impressed, even without any of the other Season 2 background. It is quite remarkable, I almost wasn’t breathing, it is very intense.

      • MilaXX

Homeland needs more scenes like the interrogation scene to even begin to be as great as The Wire. When Homeland can have an entire scene with only one word used in different ways repeatedly to tell a story or have an actress appear in one scene every season, with less than maybe 5 lines, and yet give you an entire story arc for that character, then perhaps Homeland can approach the greatness that was The WIre.

    • SassieCassy

wahhhhhhh someone doesnt like homeland! time to downvote!!!

    • omg_dora

Seems she feels tha same. That’s how I read her saying “But (=even though I didn’t end up working on something like The Wire) working on Homeland has been very rewarding”.

  • Sarah

She is so smart; I love her. I can’t believe MS-CL was only 14 episodes. She may be selling herself short because that was a plenty multi-layered world to my young adult self.

  • jspark

She unrecognizable in 2 out of the 3 pictures. What happened to her nose on the cover? “Behold the jawline of the Claire Danes” is what the cover should have said.

  • Laylalola

Really looking like Gwyneth Paltrow in the first two.

    • Kent Roby

Gwennie wants us to think that she looks like this while baking cookies, planting next season’s crop, and rejecting scripts from Scorsese.

  • Qitkat

This is a shoot of a beautiful woman, styled impeccably and quite arresting. But is it Claire Danes? I don’t feel the *Claire Danes ishness* of it, not really.

    • Mary229

I think it’s a gorgeous shoot but I honestly didn’t know who it was when I saw the cover. It doesn’t look like her. No?

  • jilly_d

FUCKING LOVE HER. And PS Claire, you may have had only 19 episodes with Angela Chase, but she was every bit as layered and wonderful as Carrie. Thanks for coming back to TV

  • DaringMiss

In the second picture, there is a strong whiff of Grace Kelly in the Hitchcock years

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I am LOVING the gold eyeshadow.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

I know it is iconic but I hate with the passion of a thousand suns the stupid hands over the boob shot. Because you know we’re talking clothes here. Maybe I’m just jealous because I don’t think Andre the Giant had big enough hands to cover my boobs.

    • Mary229

Yeah and let’s face it—women with larger breasts get ripped to shreds for doing the same pose or accused of being “Maxim” or something.

  • SassieCassy

i am seeing gwyneth or lauren hutton or someone, not claire danes. but whoever i am looking at looks very good so

  • Rand Ortega

    Cybil Shepard realness. Well done!

  • Noah

“Just keep throwing your head back, Claire.”

  • Trickytrisha

Stunning pics, but is her neck actually that slender?

  • boweryboy

I love Shelley Hack. I so wanted to be her.

Claire looks good, enough to play Faye Dunaway’s role in a remake of The Eyes of Laura Mars</i. good. However, I'm only halfway liking this editorial. It has something to do with the head tilts. I'm not sure what it is but it isn't quite working for me.

    • MilaXX

I’m not sure if it’s exaggerated via photoshop to elongate her neck, but the head tilt is too extreme and looks bad.

  • nancymae

Having just watched Kerry Washington on SNL, especially the “How’s He Doing?” skit, I can’t help but chuckle at Claire Danes love for The Wire.

    • MilaXX

Even Kerry, trying for all it’s worth couldn’t save SNL. I think I laughed at 2, maybe 3 sketches and the cold open that was trying so hard to me self aware was perhaps the biggest flop of all.

  • marshmallowjane

I love Claire Danes. When I first saw My So Called Life, I said, “That girl will grow up and win and Oscar.” I don’t think that has happened yet but she has had all other significant accolades. There is one scene in Little Women–she is Beth, the sister who dies–where the look on her face expresses different emotions at the same time.

I don’t even like to compare her to Meryl Streep, but I can think of no one else in her calibre.

At first I avoided Homeland due to its intensity. But I watched it with my sister on her birthday because I have Showtime. OMGosh.

I’m not sure how realistic the intensity is. The situations in which her character lives are so stressful. I wonder when she has time to take a shower between kidnappings and explosions.

Back to Claire Danes who loses herself in her character. I don’t think she can afford to be vain when the camera sees her face. She really has no bad features, so it’s not a surprise that she cleans up so well. She has a nice slender body, too. My favorite photo above is the one that shows her topless down to the waist.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love these photos and I always love her interviews – she seems intelligent and self-aware…Both of which are rare in celebrity interviews, as far as I can tell.

  • MilaXX

I like the looks, hate the poses. It’s like her head is too heavy and she can’t keep in up. I still like Homeland, but this season is kinda getting on my nerves.

  • frannyprof

But the cover looks NOTHING like her!!!!!

  • jonesybj_notreally

somebody’s channeling Kathleen Turner from back in the day….

  • aahlife

One of the problems is they totally annihilated the shape of her mouth. She has wonderful upturn corners of her mouth, which is one of her unique and pretty characteristics.

  • ThaliaMenninger

So I’m seeing Elsa Lanchester. Is that wrong?

  • Fannie Wolston

rhianna just called, wants her lipstick back…

    stunning girl, stunning dress

  • Irish Rodriguez Reyes

As much as I love MSCL as well as her earlier work – pretty much everything from “Little Women” to “Romeo and Juliet” – I just can’t bring myself to like her nowadays. Yes, she’s talented and attractive but I also find her entitled and overrated.

    Sorry not sorry.

  • StylishDreaming

Her posing is incredibly awkward, I’m squirming from just looking at that cover. And the way her head is tilted in each of these shots makes it look like she’s trying to pretend the camera’s not in her face.

  • elzatelzabelz

    She looks freaking fabulous.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

God, that Balenciaga on her is spectacular.

  • bertkeeter

Another over exsposed broad! I have an idea….How about a model on the cover of some of these Fashion Mags? Interview of course is not a fashion mag…so maybe someone “interesting and new”?

  • Plink

Get out the neck brace! Your neck must be aching so bad by now having to hold your head a such an angle all the time.

  • quiltrx

I definitely see gold eyeshadow as “very editorial”…but “very stupid” in real life. it really looks great in that Balenciaga shot (as do the lips).

  • Watts

How about a remake of “Princess Daisy” with Claire as the lead?

  • Michelle Gennari

    She looks amazing!

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I love this, LOVE THIS LOVE THIS! I love late 70s supermodels, and I was so excited to see this! She looks fan-fucking-tabulous!

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE that Teal dress with the dramatic neck-piece! It is stunning!
