Christina Hendricks in D&G at the Xbox One Launch Event

Posted on November 22, 2013

Okay, we love everything about this. After showing up at an (arguably much higher profile than this) event looking … well, we’re just gonna say it: like crap, Miss Christina knew a course correction was in order, checked her calendar, looked at the small army of fairy folk who tend to her needs,  and said “Fuck it. I’ll go to that Xbox thing. Just make sure I look spectacular.”

Note: this is probably fictional but it does explain the laudable turnaround.

“Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks attends the Xbox One Launch at Milk Studios in Los Angeles, California in a D&G shirt dress paired with a Dolce&Gabbana bag.

D&G Plaid Shirt Dress

Dolce & Gabbana Mixed Tapestry Miss Sicily Satchel Bag

Nice.

Christina has a stated “vintage shop” aesthetic to her personal style, but it doesn’t translate well to pictures for public appearances. We’ve often thought if she wanted to keep that quirky vintage edge to her style, she could dip a little into the rockabilly waters. It suits her, it has an edge to it, it keeps her sexy, and it looks good in pictures. This isn’t literally rockabilly, but it leans in that direction and she’s all the better for it.  It has personality, it shows off her figure in the best way, and it doesn’t make her look like she’s wearing a Joan Holloway costume. It’s modern with a vintage feel. Love the dress and LOVE the bag.

    WANT that dress

    • Anne

      Ohhhh, me too.

    • Kate Andrews

ME TOO! Maybe someone makes a cheaper version. I don’t think I can afford D&G.

      • YoungSally

It’s not HORRIBLE (relatively speaking) $381.50 at Net-a-porter.

  • Zaftiguana

    SO PERFECT on her.

  • marlie

Holy CRAP she looks fabulous. That dress is made for her figure.

Now I need to figure out how to get it into my closet.

But I’m sorry… that bag is HIDDY. Looks like my grandmother’s sewing scraps bag.

    • tereliz

I have literally never seen her look so svelte and petite. Who knew a plaid shirt-dress could be so slimming? The lack of ruffles around the bust—like she always seems to default to—is definitely a win.

      • Heather

Apparently she is quite tiny in person. She just doesn’t (seem to) know how to dress for her figure; hence her proportions always look off.

        • filmcricket

I’ve seen her in person – albeit from a distance – and she’s not tiny. She’s what we mere mortals would call “normal” – probably a size 9 or so. She also has the disadvantage of being extremely short-waisted, so that her chest and hips look even bigger by virtue of simple proximity. Sometimes I wish she’d ring up Bette Midler, who is much shorter than Christina but has a similar body type, and usually looks fabulous. They might be able to share tips.

          • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Good call! They even share similar coloring. Surely the amazing Ms Midler has a gay or two she can spare to a fellow actor in need!

      • 3boysful

As a fuller-busted person, I ordinarily avoid breast pockets. So how does she look so darn cute in this??

        • Jackie4g

My thoughts ( and physical situation), exactly. The ruffled top looked awful, and here she is breaking another rule, and she looks really good!

        • alyce1213

The pockets are small and they’re darted, so it all fits nicely and doesn’t add bulk.

    • CakesOnAPlane

      hate the bag.

    • sojourneryouth

Agree completely. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her in that dress (and wish I had it for myself), but the bag is seriously ugly and tacky. It reminds me of those awful cross-stitch samplers that women did back in the day. And mixing a big, wallpaper-worthy floral with an animal print? That’s just weird.

      • Snailstsichr

Big flowers and leopard print have been partnered together in needlepoint for years. I have to admit, I kinda love them.

        • sojourneryouth

Really? So, crack addiction is rampant among needlpointers? :)

    • kimmeister

I like the bag because cross stitch looks pixelated, and so do video games – thus, a subtle tie-in to the event.

  • Kelly

Love her smile in the close-up. Question — do you think her face looks a lot thinner lately? I noticed it in the “like crap” picture, too. I think she looks great both ways, but to me it seems noticeably different. Could just be the hairstyling, I suppose.

    • Wellworn

She does look thinner, not just her face.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

They’ve just started filming next season, so perhaps she lost some weight in anticipation of the ten pounds the camera puts on.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

She does look good. But I totally don’t get any of this for an Xbox event. She looks like someone’s hot mom carrying grandma’s bag.

  • Sarah

I don’t personally like plaid OR carpetbags, but I like her look here, so she must be working it. Good on you, Ms Hendricks!

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Love it! This event is perfect for her, she’s married to a “nerdy” guy, so she gets much geek love.

  • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

    LOVE! IT!

  • Filmjen

    need. that. dress.

  • hughman

Love. I can see Lucy wearing this after she and RIcky moved to Connetticut.

  • http://www.fairestrunofall.com/ Jenn @ Fairest Run of All

Where is the cheap knockoff version?!

    • Zia Desantis

I have something incredibly similar that I bought from Forever 21 like five years ago. I know this isn’t exactly helpful at this point, but there you have it.

    • DTLAFamilies

Try LL Bean. They have a couple of plaid dresses with this silhouette, but not in a red plaid, alas.

      ETA: Also ModCloth

  • beebee10

Great, such a fun look on her.
And i know you boys have a thing for plaid, so double the fun!

  • gabbilevy

This is fantastic for her. Glad Miss Christina gets a win.

  • rkdgal

I wouldn’t have thought that a plaid of that scale would work on her, but man does it ever. Great job, Christina (and her gays)!

  • deelup

She’s a lumberjack and she’s okay. (Someone had to!)

    • Danielle

*FLAILS* I love when people drop Monty Python references!

      • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

And now that they’re back together, more references to come!

      • starrika

My dad sang that song to us as a lullaby when we were kids. And yes, there was a call home from school about it when I hit kindergarden, ha.

        • tereliz

At least you didn’t tell people to sit on your face and tell you that they love you… DID YOU? ;)

      • MilaXX

I’m so excited to hear about the reunion.

    • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

That’s the first place my mind went too! Of course, given the general awesomeness of the BKs, I knew someone would have beaten me to it :)

  • alyce1213

What a turnaround — no frills, no fluff, tailored, well-fitted, even her hair looks better. Who is this again?
Really, this is the right silhouette for her.

    • marlie

Someone needs to tell her/her people to never, ever put a boob-ruffle on her again.

    • tallgirl1204

I think that’s the key: no frills, no fluff, perfectly fitted.

      • alyce1213

The dress is designed and cut so well that the patch pockets on her boobs aren’t even a problem — they’re small and have darts in them, so well done. She should have one of these made in every color (lol).

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Her make up is really nice. Has anybody else seen the Broken Bells video starring her flying a space ship?

  • CLoverleaf

Hot look, and she knows it. Love the smile!

  • webslice33

she looks lovely…must have lost weight too…

    • Imasewsure

No it’s just that the fit of the dress is so perfect for her… it makes a huge difference in how her shape is perceived…

  • KinoEye

Love everything about this. Always encouraging to see my fellow pale redhead and spirit animal looking smashing!

  • Garcia Loca

I love this outfit (with slight reservations vis-a-vis old-lady cross-stitched handbag).

    • Isabel

The animal print and the size give the purse the modern pop. My mom had a smaller purse with the needlepoint design in the 1960s. That would look more old-lady.

  • uprightcitizen

That plaid shouldn’t work on her figure, right? But it does … and the tailoring is precise to fit that perfectly without gapping at the buttons. The bag is an unexpected, but cool match, even if she does look like she has a change of clothes and her toothbrush in it. Wish she’d wear a little more interesting shoes, though. She always wears pointed, plain pumps, and her feet look so tiny, the proportions look off. A squared off toe, a little trim or something would give her feet some presence. Poor things literally never see the light of day.

  • Jessica Freeman

I want her Mary Poppins bag.

  • BayTampaBay

I would never have dreamed that she would look thin and 20 pounds lighter in a PLAID dress!

Who would have thought; not me

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I want that dress and I’m not such a big fan of plaid (on me). She looks fab here.

  • ashtangajunkie

I am coveting that dress pretty hard. She looks fantastic.

  • jen_vasm

    Bravo, Missy!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Now *that’s* a turnaround. Holy crap.

  • oatmealpie

She should hire Dita Von Teese as her personal stylist. The two of them would be unstoppable.

    • Shawn EH

With a soupcon of Betty Page!

  • Mona_Visa

Brilliant! She looks great in everything and I want it all.

  • Shawn EH

    She is one hot number!

  • boldprint

    serving up some lumberjack REALNESS.

    adorbs.

  • decormaven

There she is- so fabulous! Work it, girl!

  • sagecreek

    Love the dress!

I cannot sign off on the bag, it’s giving out too much of an Old Southern Lady vibe for me. Probably since I’m perilously close to being an Old Southern Lady myself.

  • Kathy

Two days ago and today: Night and day.

  • Chickadeep

Dress is cute and a great choice for her—the lack of frills and ruffles is the perfect antidote to that eye-searing L’Wren Scott explosion she was sporting the other day. And the bag and shoes are giving me 1950s-by-way-of1980s life!

    • Imasewsure

Yes the total absence of ruffles and frills was much appreciated!!!

  • MilaXX

Well done! I like the entire look.

  • Imasewsure

Head to toe awesome (except I personally don’t like the bag). So much improvement!! Love it

  • NYCGlamourpuss

It does look really cute on her! Very fresh, very informal for an X Box event. At first, I wasn’t sure if I liked it at all – a big plaid on a busty gal – but the more I look at the dress, the shoes, the bag, the hair, the makeup – it all comes together really nicely!

  • judybrowni

    Cute, cute, cute.

    Well done, Ms. Christina.

  • Tanya Wade

She’s a lumberjack and she’s okay! I have bag envy at Defcon 5 levels.

  • SusannaGA

It’s surprising how great that plaid, that style, that fit looks on her. I never would have envisioned that dress working well for her at all. Very cute!

  • bravobravp

I just about love anytime a high fashion takes on lumberjack flannel.

  • filmcricket

It’s crazy how much this suits her. The difference from a couple days ago is so marked that I can’t help but wonder if there’s some Photoshop trickery going on here.

  • PinkySlinky

I know this is not gonna be well received but I’m soo over her…once Mad Men is over, she’ll cease to matter (imo)

  • Tracy_Flick

Perfect, and perfectly fitted, dress. I don’t like the bag, though, I think it veers into tacky with the leopard print.

  • ConnieBV

That bag is giving me SOPHIA PETRILLO REALNESS. Love.

  • appliquer

I think I’ll take a lesson from this. She looks so good in prints – they really reduce the overwhelming size of her bust.

    • sagecreek

      Overwhelming? Seriously?

      • boweryboy

She is fairly well endowed, and in the wrong outfit it is overwhelming. It becomes all that you can see or focus on, and I’m gay so her breasts hold zero interest for me.

        • sagecreek

It’s body shaming and I don’t like it.

          • filmcricket

            Overwhelming is not necessarily pejorative.

          • sagecreek

In the context, it definitely was, but I don’t want to get into a fight with my fellow Bitter Kittens, so let’s let this one rest.

          • boweryboy

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think saying her bust is overwhelming in certain outfits is body shaming. I think it’s just an observation based on personal opinion, and it’s perfectly fine to have a difference of opinion.

Now, if the original poster said something to effect of she needs to hide her breasts because their size makes her look trampy, then I would wholeheartedly agree with you.

Plus, the original poster said she would take a lesson from Christina’s use of prints. So that makes me think the original poster will use the idea of prints in her own wardrobe so that she isn’t “overwhelming” as well.

            Just my thoughts.

  • Ann VerWiebe

If I had the money, that would be my everyday bag.

  • sweet_potato

    Fabulous!

  • Madam Von Sassypants

I would wear this exact outfit.

  • MoHub

Opening the collar makes all the difference for a busty woman.

  • boweryboy

Thanks Christina. More of this please.

  • Kate4queen

Ooh I want all of this.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Very good look on her. Funny how it’s always recommended not to have breast pockets for busty ladies because they tend to make it more prominent, but here it totally works to her advantage.

    • amaranth16

Yes – I think they interrupt the expanse a little here, in a good way. Sort of the opposite of wearing a turtleneck.

  • Nicole Walraven

WANT that dress! i might not be able to fill it out quite as well as Christina, but i’ll take one in every color please.

  • snarkykitten

    I want this dress

  • cmb92191

I could wear that dress to work. I want it! As similarly proportioned as Ms. Hendricks, I like anything that covers up and is still cute.

  • ChelseaNH

This isn’t the best she could look — I don’t think red is as good on her as blues or greens — but it’s pretty damn fine.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

    she’s a lumberjack and she’s ok……

  • MzzPants

    A+

  • KT

She looks fantastic! I soooo want that dress

  • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

perfection! i can’t remember the last time she looked so damn good. i even think she looks better than she does in her joan drag!

ETA: also, now i need a plaid shirt dress

  • AutumnInNY

    Perfect Miss Christina!

  • CatherineRhodes

Love the plaid, and the rockabilly nod. All she needs is a black leather jacket and the Stray Cats for a soundtrack.

  • Gatto Nero

Perfection. Genius (and not an obvious choice) to pair that bag with that dress.

  • suzq

Love love love love love love LOVE!!!!!

  • Mojone

Everything about her looks seriously thinner, even her face which looks positively narrow.

It can’t just be the dress.
