Cameron Diaz on the Set of “Annie”

Posted on November 13, 2013

Oh, so that’s the direction they’re taking with Miss Hannigan. We were wondering about that, ever since Cam’s casting was announced.

Cameron Diaz is seen on the set of the new movie ‘Annie’ today in New York City.

We have to admit, this is the way to go. It’s the 2013 version of the original character; trashy and rough. We have a feeling she’s going to be great in the role.

    She’s just being Miley?

    • snarkykitten

please. Britney Spears did this shit first, barefoot in a gas station bathroom like 5 years ago!

    • StarburstLady

I was gonna say Mimi from Rent, but that might just be because she’s hanging out on a New York City fire escape.

      • lilyvonschtupp

And Madonna did this before any of these broads.

  • ninamadeleine

That’s a great way to dress that character. I have always liked the idea Drea DiMatteo in this role. I think of her character in SOA.

  • Emily Smith

    This excites me. A lot.

  • NormDeplume720

Patty the Daytime Hooker. I like it.

  • Danielle

She was great as a rougher character in Bad Teacher. This will be fun to see.

    • Yep that was my first thought.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        Same here.

    • Emily Smith

      That movie was surprisingly funny.

  • Kate Andrews

I am so enjoying the Carol Burnett video. Oh my. That movie had such good songs. Also, thumbs up for Cam.

    • Qitkat

I had never seen that before. It’s hysterical!

    • AnguaVonUberwald

I love her version of this song so much. I will occasionally sing it in my own home, doing my best Carol Burnett impression, when I am picking up after my own little girls.

  • hughman

    “It’s a hard twerk life…”

    • Vickiefantastico

      Oh, how I love you!

    • NYCGlamourpuss

  • nyazgirl

    I’m sorry. No.

  • quiltrx

I don’t remember Miss Hannigan being a prostitute.

    • Natalie

Maybe not a prostitute, but pretty darn raunchy. I think this fits the attitude of the character perfectly!

    • I’ve never seen the original, but from the clip TLo linked of the original, I thought she was a prostitute. (I watched the first 30 seconds on mute.)

  • Mrs.G

    AHHH! That sneer!

  • I cannot wait for this movie to come out. If you’re going to re-interpret iconic cinema*, you re-interpret the hell out of it. (*I was four when the original “Annie” came out. It might still be one of my favorite movies ever.)

  • shirab

But can she sing, even a little? Because she surely couldn’t, or acted that way, in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

    • Natalie

      Ahhhh I love that movie.

      • mlle

I do too. It was one of the first “grown up” movies I went to see with my mother, so I’ve always had a soft spot for it.

    • tereliz

And Shrek. Don’t forget Shrek. 😛

    • MK03

She cannot. Like at all. So now the question is, will they overdub her with a real singer or will she vocally slaughter one of the only good songs in the show?

(No, I’m not a fan. Looking after kids who have starred in a kajillion community-theatre productions of it and sing it all the damn time beats the enjoyment out of you in a big hurry.)

    • JDreesen

by all [known-to-me-in-my-tiny-world] reports, she cannot.

but we can hope that this updated character also embodies the boozy feel of the original, in which case the off-key and out-of-step lyrical timing may work to the film’s advantage (though Burnett always belted it out fantastically when it mattered).

again, i say all we can do is hope. it’s an awful big word to use, i know, but i am trying to be…what’s that other word? optimistic. or something.

    • Alloy Jane

Oh no, that was aaalll her. She can’t sing, and personally, I can’t wait to hear her butcher every last song that passes through her lips. It’ll be hilarious.

  • Stella Zawistowski

So she’s Mimi from Rent now?

    • MilaXX

      Can you light my candle?

  • NoveltyRocker

This version just looks like she’ll be snorting things instead of boozing up. Edgy!

  • Tatiana Luján

My god, the legs of that woman!

  • marlie

All I can see are the hand-knit handwarmers. #knittingnerd

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She has great physical comedy skills, she should be terrific!

  • Griffinqueen

    Debbie Harry? Is that you?

    • formerlyAnon

      Wouldn’t THAT be fun?!

      • Alloy Jane

YES IT WOULD. Now I’m kinda sad that she isn’t Miss Hannigan. Did you ever see Spun? She was in that as the butch landlady. Good stuff.

        • MoHub

Also Debbie Harry’s performance in the original Hairspray would bode well for her playing Miss Hannigan. She absolutely nailed the bitchy.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

She really would be great in this role! But I don’t mind seeing Cam try to pull this off, I have faith in her.

  • mjude

I am just to old school. never a fan when they try to “current” it up. I love the play

    • MoHub

Thank you for referencing the play. The movie version is not the original, and I’m nitpicky enough not to be happy when it is referred to as such.

  • aahlife

So refreshing to see an actor who can furrow her brow.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      I thought that!

  • andreawey

I’ve never understood everybody’s fascination with her………. totally overrated in my opinion…..

  • Adibug

I like it, but her legs look too nice. She needs a couple of runs in her stockings to make it feel real.

    • You’re right, but not just the stockings. Her boots should be more worn. They’re spotless! Her clothes are a little too nice as well. They should also look more worn, or much more cheap.

    • rag254

I can see at least one run. But yes, needs more.

  • Judy_J

I’m not buying it. Carol Burnett’s Miss Hannigan is the gold standard.

    • AnguaVonUberwald

It really is. Jane Lynch tried, bless her, but didn’t even come close. I doubt Cameron Diaz will fair much better.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Carol Burnett IS a gold standard. period.

    • MoHub

Not really. The Broadway original was much better.

  • Tashina Savage

Carol Burnett is amazing. Thanks for posting that video!

  • e jerry powell

I thought it was Madonna, circa 1983.

  • fursa_saida

Every time I see anything coming out about this movie–little details they’ve changed, or stills–I get more excited. At this rate I won’t survive until it actually comes out.

  • MilaXX

So the new Ms. H is a ho’? I have to admit she’s the only person cast in this I dislike.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

Thank you for the video, I love Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan. As kids we used to rewind the “SOMEDAY I’LL STEP ON THEIR FRECKLES!” line over and over because her face is so hilarious!

  • Kate4queen

I swear I thought it was Miley having a bad day for a moment. Maybe Miley in 20 years? 10 years?

  • RoseJB

Thanks for setting off a youtube-athon of Annie songs (from the 1982 film, of course). God I love “Let’s go to the movies.”

  • Emery MW

J’adore. The perfect storm of Drecktitude

  • NYCGlamourpuss

This is the perfect way to go for a modern update of the character. I approve!

  • valerie747

    Some gum-snapping is required.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

And the stench of stale cigarette smoke, even outside in the fresh air.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Yeah…Cameron Diaz is NO Carol Burnett. I can’t see her being able to do “Little Girls,” “Sign,” or “Easy Street.” Also…just looked up the movie and…they’re changing Warbucks name?? To STACKS?!?!?!?

  • Akemi

She’s not “singing” in this, is she?

  • tintashoopa

    Carol Burnett ROCKS!!

  • guest2visits

    OMG Miley….is that you?

  • Dagney

There is no God. I just can’t…what the hell…Can the prissy blondes kindly go back to cheer camp and let the actual actresses do the acting work?
