Allison Williams in L’Wren Scott at the 2013 CNN Heroes Event

Posted on November 20, 2013

We’re sighing, darlings. Sighs of resignation.

Of course she looks pretty here:

“Girls” star Allison Williams attends the 2013 CNN Heroes event at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City in L’Wren Scott.

But she also took a kinda cool dress and did everything in her power to make it as blandly inoffensive as possible. And once again, she styled herself a look that would totally rock on a woman literally twice her age. Hair, jewelry, dress, shoes – all perfect for the 45-to-60 socialite set.

On the other hand, we really do like this dress. The color looks great on her. We don’t like the way the straps are arranged and we absolutely think a good 4 inches need to come off that hem in order to make it look fresh on her. She needs a more trendy pair of shoes and to put that funky runway sash back on in order to give the look some edge.

We suspect “edge” in the Williams household means something like “not having your hair lacquered” or “lip gloss.”

But fine: she’s pretty. Boring but pretty.

Wow she looks gorgeous. I do think she should take more risk and have more fun with her style in general, but I’m not gonna hate on this look. It’s just too pretty.

    • Mary229

I don’t watch “Girls” so I honestly have no idea who she is but I had the same reaction. She’s so pretty. I’m fine with pretty sometimes. Not every woman feels comfortable being edgy and that’s fine with me. This is a great look.

  • The obi was the best bit. This girl really needs an unsuitable boyfriend – the Kylie Minogue dating Michael Hutchence treatment.

    • decormaven

Michael Hutchence. Let’s have a moment here to remember – sigh. I’m not sure who would be the equal to that pairing in today’s time.

      • None of the boy stars of today quite capture it, do they?

        • decormaven

          Not what he had, no.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, no, no, there’s no comparison to Hutchence by today’s standards. Let us reflect…

          • They are all so manufactured and pre-packaged. Mais où sont les Hutchences d’antan?

          • random_poster

To this day the mention of his name brings forth a plethora of emotion. *sigh*

          • kimmeister

There is nothing sexier than his voice in the song “Not Enough Time.”

          • His voice in Need You Tonight?

          • decormaven

            “‘Cause I’m not sleeping…” Oh!

      • Chaiaiai

He epitomized the phrase “I would drink his bath water”. Which is the highest compliment I can give a man.

    • TLJezebel

      I miss him.

    • Rhonda Shore

Removing the obi was a huge mistake…even worse than the length. A funky shoe is also needed. Love that color on her though. Now, for the rocker boyfriend…

  • RussellH88

She always looks good, but she’s never really anything beyond “Meh, pretty”.

    • marlie

She’s always so… SAFE. For once, I’d like her to go all-out wacko with a look.

      • Sarah

I think for her, she probably thinks this fabric is SUPER edgy. Purple! Shiny! Black! Easy, there, Alison. You’ll be okay. Baby steps.

  • SewingSiren

The cheese stands alone. In this case I think the dress is strong enough with out all the hooha , plus the fit is perfect so that goes a long way.

    • Kelly

Yes, I’d leave the elegant dress alone and concentrate on the accessories.

    • Nancer

I’m with you. Though maybe I’m showing my age…. I have nothing against classic pretty!

    • Deb Oswald

what is that fabric do you think? some sort of faux leather?

      • SewingSiren

That’s what I think too. Embossed faux leather.

  • styrch

LOVE this color on her and the dress. But yes, shorten it, then let her hair down!!! She needs to rock the Jessica Rabbit a bit, even though she’s in purple.

    • ampg

The thing about this particular event, though, is that it’s quite earnest and takes itself pretty seriously. It’s not really an “industry” event, so a Jessica Rabbit look would be out of place.

  • Mary Lauer

I knew you two were gonna say she removed every interesting detail as soon as I saw the runway pic! But maybe she WANTS to be blandly pretty rather than interesting?!

    • Lori

I think TLo’s point about her is that she clearly does want to be blandly pretty rather than interesting.

      • Mary Lauer

        H. I re-read. I dunno. I am not gonna say more because reading tone from the Internet is famously hard. 😎

      • Yep.

        • Mary Lauer

Thanks for the clarification. Will read more carefully in the future. 😎

  • Prettiest girl at the office party.

  • Lesley

she should have kept the belt, added some fun shoes or not had first lady hair – that’s it i think she is pimping herself to be the next first lady. that or head bitch at some fancy country club.

  • decormaven

A dinky ring, bland earrings, and is that a watch bracelet? Lawd, girl, rock some heavy artillery while you can.

  • MilaXX

    Blandy McBland

  • Not applicable

Nancy Reagan would be so proud.

    • decormaven

      Heck, Mamie Eisenhower.

  • Kelly

She looks so lovely that I won’t even quibble about the hair or makeup. But to pass up such a perfect chance to make a statement with bold or funky shoes? My inner Imelda is very sad. (And yes! Shorten the dress.)

  • Diego!

She looks gorgeous but I agree. She should have worn a shorter version of this dress and loose hair and it would have been (maybe) a WERQ. Make up & jewelry are flawless! Boring shoes though…

  • jtabz

It’s hard for me to work up too much ire when grading her on a Girls cast curve.

  • Tatiana Luján

She looks gorgeous. I don’t see the need of the sash, but the hem definitely needs to be higher, I wish it hit just above the knee. Funkier shoes or at least shoes with some color would do wonders for this look.

  • Nicholas

Of course she chose to top it off with accessories that age her fourty years.

  • I’m 61, and I’d wear this with a shorter hemand keep the sash. Not the shoes from the runway, but certainly something with a little more style and color. The hat is a definite given for me! This girl is just dull. Pretty, but dull and style-less.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She’s the pretty girl at the office party. That pattern is pretty boss, you could do a really funky bag, even a sexy shoe (not a naked shoe, a sexy one), and a great ring. But alas, this is not in my closet- although if she wants to send it….

  • MannahattaMamma

I’m woefully middle aged & grew up in the midwest surrounded by stiff-haired women in sensible shoes, and even *I* know that hemline is an atrocity. To have that hem when you’ve got those gams? That’s just downright mean.

  • jilly_d

She has the most beautiful hands *sighs with jealousy*

  • Kent Roby

Why would a designer allow a starlet to strip their design of everything that made it work in the first place? Lord, this dress is like a remake of Gone With The Wind that leaves out the Civil War.

  • I wonder if she and Taylor Swift are friends? And if they have a Prissy Mean Girls club?

    • ashtangajunkie

      On Wednesdays, they wear pink.

  • bellafigura1

That is one terrific dress. L’Wren Scott has a knack for lady-bodies.

  • MW

I’d love to see this dress on Helen Mirren.

  • Definitely needs to be shortened but I disagree about the sash. I love the line of the dress without it. Hemming, plus more interesting shoes and earrings, would have turned this into a WERQ for me.

  • Carleenml

    she’s ladies who lunch.

  • V No Privacy

She is beautiful and boring. I worry that her style reflects her personality. Fearful and safe.

  • Kathy

It’s probably been mentioned before, but wow does she look like Amanda Peet here. I like this look on her without the belt. I pretty much agree with the rest. However, I’m not so sure this looks too old for her. Maybe she just likes something more sophisticated. I haven’t seen her fashion choices in the past, so I don’t know.

  • cocohall

Maybe she was raised not to stand in the center of the spotlight. Maybe she feels that she needs to stay on the fashion down low given that she is a supporting actress on her show. Maybe she fears the sort of hate that comes Lena and Zosia’s way. Maybe she is just very minimalistic. But girl, you have your forties and fifties to be sensible. Grab your moment while you can. Still, very pretty.

  • NMMagpie

She looks great, even with the four extra inches on the hem.

My first thought was: “Now THIS is what Melissa on PRAS3 was going for.” Irrelevant, but there you have it.

  • Janet B

    Perfect for the venue.
I’d like to see her styling change, but this time it works.

  • crash1212

Let her live, people. Allison is not and never will be edgy. It isn’t her. She’s a very pretty woman with a very conservative sense of style. Full stop. I love this dress and think the straps fully emphasize her extremely beautiful shoulders and clavicle . It’s a great color, she’s clean and she has her tongue in her mouth.

    • demidaemon

I think there is a wide line between edgy and draining all personality out of an outfit. I think we all know which side of the line Miss Williams is on.

  • teensmom99

You have made me realize exactly which girls from my (misspent) youth Allison reminds me of: the ones who were always too perfect and safe. Now that you have opened my eyes to this, I always giggle when I see her picture.

  • marlie

Really pretty dress, but the overall look is killed by snooze-worthy styling.

  • Alfred Cox

Although the runway version was little cray-cray, at least it was interesting. As it is however, its just another bland, boring dress from Allison.
For me she’s similar to Zosia as far as not knowing how to sell her brand in an interesting and fashionable way. Girls is an amazing show, but that won’t last forever. She needs to start making an impact. As it is though, she’s pretty lame sauce. STEP IT UP GIRL!

    • Snailstsichr

Has someone put everyone on that show under a fashion interdict? I sometimes think they are all prohibited from dressing with any kind of style.

  • ojosazules

If she’s going to do the socialite set thing, wish she would include the hat.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Yes to everything you said, TLo. She’s accessorized as blandly as possible, and a whole lotta hem needs to come off of that bottom. Because it IS a cool dress!

  • ashtangajunkie

“Beautiful, but Boring: The Allison Williams Story.”

  • MzzPants

That dress needs to go right to Dita Von Tease.

  • flamingoNW

If she’d only worn red shoes, not like the model but at least the same color, it would have gone a long long way

  • TLJezebel

She’s about as exciting as lint.

  • DTLAFamilies

She’s like the opposite of Elizabeth Banks.

  • ThesisMonkey

Love the color, and her makeup is really pretty. But she really knows how to make it boring.

  • E. D.

The skirt is too long as T&L said. Boring, but pretty is still better than trainwreck.

  • Lilak

I doubt that anything’s gonna change with her, so … is there really any point in devoting valuable TLo real estate to Miss Williams’s style? (Unless there are rubber-necking opportunities, of course.)

  • Imasewsure

The good thing is that eventually she will actually be a 45 year old socialite/celebrity so at least she is prepared. Great dress… deflated styling!

  • kimmeister

That is definitely not her strap arrangement. Would have been much better on her if arranged like on the model.

  • quiltrx

I have a feeling only she (and someone’s grandmother, perhaps) could make a dress out of such an interesting fabric so damned boring.

  • Danielle

We see your collarbones, dear. Breathe out.

  • jmorino08

She dresses like a politician’s wife. Way too safe.

  • lunchcoma

She should have kept the belt.

  • pookiesmom

You make me think I’m probably dressing way too old for my age. I think she looks totally hot. It’s definitely on the conservative side of things, but it fits like a glove and she looks gorgeous.

  • Synnae

Yes she looks pretty. But dull. She really managed to bore the hell out of a potentially mega kick ass dress.

That said, I am fantasy dressing myself in that dress now and that is a lot of fun. And looking a lot less boring…

  • Irish Rodriguez Reyes

One day she’ll make a lovely FLOTUS.

  • melanie0866

    She is SO pretty.

  • Mona_Visa

Fruit roll-up realness. Grape flavor. I like it.

…But the shoes are *so* boring. It’s another wasted shoe opportunity… There are so many amazing and beautiful shoes out there!!! Why don’t these beautiful starlets wear them??

  • She looks pretty, but let’s face it, trendy is not her thing, and that’s fine. A couple of inches off the dress and a little more intrest in the shoes would make this a WERQ. On the other hand, the runway styling is kind of a mess.

  • CarrieBaby

I think this girl has an obsession with dressing like shes twice her age. She rests on pretty and simple which is kinda weird for someone her age. Dianna Agron also suffers from this. I would have loved the dress if it lost a couple of inches off of the bottom

  • Meg0GayGuys6

She looks like a politician’s wife.

  • demidaemon

Agreed with all the above. here is one girl who needs to copy runway looks piece for piece so she just looks different and not boring. And why lengthen the hem? It wasn’t like it was in miniskirt territory before. I just don’t get it or her.

  • hmatz

Yes, she’s pretty. No, not everyone wants to be edgy. But she dresses with absolutely no interest or even glamor in her outfits at all. She’s the ultimate vanilla dresser. I’m bored.

  • ItsDicey

    Country Club glam.

  • Greg

You may find her boring, but I find her classic. Not everyone wants to be edgy. Besides, if EVERYONE did edgy, then edgy would become classic. There needs to be balance out there in the fashion world.

  • ampg

I’m going to disagree – I think she’s dressed perfectly for this particular event. The CNN Heroes event is full of Hollywood types, but it’s all quite earnest – they honor very ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things (I’m acquainted with the 2012 winner). I wouldn’t ever think of it as the type of event where you would want to look edgy.
