Posted on November 20, 2013

BAM. Fancy Santa has arrived, darlings.

Alan Cumming attends the 2013 CNN Heroes event at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

He’s here to grant all your fancy holiday wishes. Even the dirty ones. Especially the dirty ones.

I actually like the red suit. The red shoes give new meaning to matchy-matchy. But then he has that awesome smirk that he does and it makes it all better again.

    • Chickadeep

If anyone can get away with matchy-matchy, it’s him.

      • Carrie

Very true. His cheeky attitude makes it hard to hate.

    • Darren Nesbitt

Nope, I’m not here for the shoes. I have no idea what I would have worn but Nope!

  • Chickadeep

Oh, I heart him so. Alan Cumming, Patron Saint of Red Carpet Fun.

    • VioletF.

Oh, well said! It’s the twinkle in his wonderful eyes that I heart every time.

  • NormDeplume720

I do love that man. I have ever since seeing him in “The High Life” in the mid 90s.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I just caught “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” yesterday on cable, and, as always, adored Alan Cummings.

    • Alexander Peterhans

Yes! The High Life! I’ve recently been bingewatching The Good Wife, and I was thinking back to The High Life, and how amazing the trajectory is that mr Cumming has made.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I’m with it, all day. He always has such cute style on the carpet, and he’s never afraid of a pattern or color.

    • marlie

He’s not afraid of smacking the viewer in the face with color or pattern. Good for him.

    • ecallaw1977

And the fit is always impeccable.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Bless him!!!!!! I have a few dirty wishes, some of them involve Fancy Santa.
    *sighing*

    • bitchybitchybitchy

And may your dirty wishes come true, m’dear!

  • clevRcat

    Love! He looks amazing.

    • Clueless_Jock

Everything he wears becomes on trend.

      • Aurumgirl

True. And then he puts on that adorable smile and twinkles those long-lashed eyes and it all looks great on him.

  • Carleenml

    adorable.

  • Jumpingjacks

I wish the jacket would close a bit lower.. his torso is just a big block of red now, it needs something to break it up

  • jjtxgrrl

This made my morning!! Thank you.

  • In_Stitches

A four button jacket? It’s ludicrous, but I can’t say he’s not pulling it off. I wish he’d gone for some sleek, black loafers though as a call back to the tie.

  • NarieSue

That suit! Plus the dimples. Who could say no to this gent, for anything?? <3

  • AmeliaEve

Get that elf off the shelf right now! Come to momma….

  • ballerinawithagun

I love him! The happiest eyes. Perhaps he is the happiest man on earth? And beyond?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

He does always seem to be genuinely happy, wherever he is. Great acting? Real time happy? Who knows for sure: but I’m voting for real time happy.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Me too. I love that he always has a smile!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And its part of why he can get away with clothes and combinations that others would be destroyed by. He brings such wit and seemingly real glee to the process. A lot of other actors of both sexes should take a page from his book.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

Exactly! And, you know, he looks flawless, but I’d never in a zillion years say, “Other boy stars – take note!”, because none of them could get away with this.

          • Sarah

Ya know, I was having a discussion with my friend about this the other day – more in the line of musical performances but it works for actors too – and I appreciate SO MUCH MORE the ones who look like they give a damn what the public thinks. I like a band who is going to get up on stage and do some dancing and performing, for goodness’ sake. I paid to be entertained! And I like an actor who knows that they wouldn’t be getting that big paycheck if I didn’t buy the tickets/DVDs to see their movies. SMILE. You are not too cool for school, and I am sick to death of these sullen, shuffling, surly celebs. Give me a Motown band with choreographed stage dancing, or an Alan Cumming with a big damned smile and a perfect, fun outfit ANY DAY. (Thank you very much.)

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I give actors a pass when they don’t bring it on while being snapped having lunch.

But at an event, they are at work, and damned well better act like it. Not in the mood? Too bad, do some acting and make us all believe that you are.

          • Sarah

Oh, yeah, pap-ping is a different thing altogether. But otherwise, POLEDANCE, by God!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Yes, a lot of them seem to have forgotten that they are in the entertainment business. Be as surly as you like when people are trying to get pictures of your kids, but when you are at a work gig be entertaining.

          • formerlyAnon

I’m of two minds about the pole dancing demeanor – it seems so all-consuming at certain points, and just because you’re an actor doesn’t mean you can always radiate happiness. So I can accept sometimes settling for looking pleasant, even pleasantly distant. That’s what makes the Alan Cummings and Hugh Jackmans of the world so special: they actually look happy, even thrilled to be there.

I do want bands in performance to look like they enjoy what they do. I don’t expect every musician to interact with the audience, but I want at some point in the performance to get the idea they like *Some*thing about their job. Everybody has an off night, but nobody signed up to be in a band thinking they wouldn’t have to perform in public.

          • Sarah

Sure, everyone has an off night (or day.) I guess I am saying that there is a difference between pleasant and downright pissed off or resentful, and I wish there was more attention to the concept of fan appreciation. But then, I wish there was more attention to the concept of being polite, customer service, keeping your word, and cleaning up after your self. Kids today, get off my damn lawn, etc. etc.

          • formerlyAnon

Some days I can just feel the ratty oversized cardigan growing out of my shoulders, the better to project aging menace from my front porch steps.

          • Sarah

I’m under 40, and spend most evenings with an afghan and at least two cats on my lap. I am my own grandma.

    • Deb Oswald

The couple little lines in the corner of his eyes give him some sort of genuine happy- honest and real. So cute and that red suit is fab

  • MilaXX

    YES!!!

  • Mismarker

Serving up some Elf on the Shelf realness.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      ADORABLE comparison!

      • Mismarker

Thanks! : ) He’s actually MUCH cuter than my Elf on the Shelf.

  • MrsAtaxxia

Now that is a Santa whose lap I want to sit on. *Ahem*

  • Charles

The number of buttons on that suit jacket make my eye twitch. That and the red shoes.

    • TAGinMO

I’m good with the red shoes, but I too would have preferred fewer buttons. A 3-button silhouette showing a bit more shirt-and-tie, with the lower one left unbuttoned, would have been pefect.

  • gabbilevy

FANCY SANTA!! God bless you, TLo, you knew exactly what I needed this morning.

  • filmcricket

Better than coffee. Bless you, TLo, and Fancy Santa.

  • jen_vasm

I fell in love instantly with this dude the second I saw him on the Tony Awards for Cabaret. He can do no wrong. He has just ushered in the holidays for me in this getup.

  • PeaceBang

The buttons take it right into costume territory, but it all seems so intentional, so “don we now our so very gay apparel” it just winds up being fabulous and right. I concur with all the other BK’s lustful reactions. I want AC in my stocking on Christmas morning. Or in my stockings. Either one is fine. He would look much better in my stockings than I do. Bless him.

  • Nancer

    Love, love, love this!

  • embers618

I cannot think of another person on Earth who could pull this off so well, but he is rocking this! Love!

  • Garcia Loca

    Be still, my heart!

  • giddypony

Love him; love the suit on him.

  • StellaZafella

He’s all in red, on a red carpet with red in the logos…this should look like a Macy’s window circa 1978…but it’s the intrepid Alan Cumming…so it just looks FABOOO!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

The new Captain Kangaroo. I predict high ratings, though not necessarily from the target age group…

  • conniemd

Love the red plaid tie. Thank you, thank you AC for rescuing me from boring black and navy ties. You were so adorbs on last Sunday’s “The Good Wife.” Eli needs a girlfriend.

    • filmcricket

And America Ferrera needs to be on more TV screens, so it’s a win-win, really.

  • SewingSiren

    Needs a more red.

  • Kent Roby

The usual rules do not apply to AC; this is just awesome.

  • Kathy

He exudes such mischievous charm that he can get away with things we mere mortals cannot.

  • Katesymae

The shoes take it too far. Otherwise, seasonal A+.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

The blue soles to the shoes, so he doesn’t just disappear into the carpet, are genius.

  • LipstickForPigs

    I. Love. Him.

  • cocohall

Lets do a kickstarter fund so we can send Alan over to Allison Williams and take her shopping. Maybe she needs a gay uncle like Alan more than an unsuitable boyfriend. I love every bit of this including his pose. Those shoes are awesome. Black shoes would have ruined the line. And made it look more costumey (Head Elf at Santa’s Workshop) than the red. He is making me feel like going shopping and singing carols. Love him!

  • decormaven

Wouldn’t it be fab to have him sailing down the street at the Macy’s T’Day parade? This is the perfect kickoff to the holiday season.

  • crash1212

Love him. Love his suit. If ever there was a time for matchy shoes, this is it. Perfection. You WERQ that Fancy Santa!

  • MoHub

Oh Alan, where have you been. I’ve missed you so much!

  • AnneElliot

He is just the cutest man alive. I wish I lived in New York and we were best friends. Sigh.

  • ashtangajunkie

    Delightful. As always.

  • bellafigura1

Love it, hate the shoe color choice, turns it into theme-dressing.

  • nannypoo

The only man in the world who can wear this, and he looks great.

  • mjude

    YEAH for FANCY SANTA!

  • marlie

Fancy Santa can come down my chimney ANY time.

Seriously, he looks AWESOME. Just perfect.

  • ojosazules

    He cheers me right up.

  • Sam Smith

Adorbs, I do which a bit more of the shirt and tie showed.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Santa or not, this is sharp as HELL! Who knew that head to toe red on a guy could look so good! Then again, he’s one of the few who can get away with this, I think.

  • Anna Vasquez

He’s so not my usual type, but I would help that nasty little minx hang up his suit for the night any time he asked.

  • Matthew Davie

    Perfection. Love it.

  • Carla_Charlton

Kind of like Satan/Santa. BTW, he looks great — he must have a great relationship with his tailor.

  • boweryboy

    Yes, please.

  • flamingoNW

    LOVE him

  • MzzPants

Aaaaand that’s how you wear the skinny suit, boys. Sweet Baby Jesus, he’s fabulous.

  • tereliz

I think the red shoe was a good choice here. He’s so buttoned up with red that I think a black or cognac shoe would be focus pulling. LOVE the tie.

  • ThaliaMenninger

He’s more mischievous Demonic Imp than Fancy Santa to me. I love love love the plaid tie. As if we could forget you’re Scottish, Imp! He was lovely on The Good Wife last weekend, too. It’s easy to forget what a good actor he is when he does this cheeky monkey schtik all the time in real life. But he really is…

  • Anna_Cecilia

He’s MY hero. Especially for wearing that tie with that suit.

  • CeeRich

Elf on the Shelf come to life. Not a fan of the red shoes but then what other shoe would he have worn? LOL He is never afraid to GO THERE.

  • Cheryl

My very favourite gay uncle. Love everything, yes red shoes included, especially red shoes.

    • Imasewsure

Actually darling… I’m sure you meant that he is your favorite gay uncle who is not currently hosting this beloved blog!! We have room for three however… we have room!!

      • Cheryl

You are correct!!! Alan Cumming has just been my gay spirit animal for so long, I slipped. Yes, room for all.

  • jen

    He is the best.

  • Tracy_Flick

That is a man-WERQ if ever I saw one.

  • AC Simons

Alan Cummings is just plain adorable. Love his style and panache, mixed with humor.

  • Uncle Spike

Fancy Santa? *yawn* So it’s monochrome. Even if it’s red. Alan, you’re cute and all. Now go back to your closet and come up with something that doesn’t make you look like a Target employee.

    • kimmeister

Ah, but Target employees always have on tan pants.

    • julnyes

please give me the address of this magical Target where the employees look like Alan Cumming.

      • demidaemon

Indeed. Sounds like somebody’s jealous! ;)

  • zuzu

    I luff him.

  • quiltrx

Fancy Santa would definitely bring the MOST fabulous presents! Love it.

  • boweryboy

Santa, I’ve been bad. Very, very bad.

  • Danielle

    DELICIOUS.

  • JulieTy

    Bam! Love everything, especially him.

  • siriuslover

God I love him, I seriously love him. If I ever saw him on the street I might consider jumping him. And I can only say that about one other star–Colin Firth.

  • Trickytrisha

    Can I adopt him?

  • M. H. Leader

Tres adorbs. He really looks like a super-cute Xmas elf. Love it.

  • mrspotts66

    those eyes! very nice.

  • NBG

    Never change, Alan. Never change.

  • frannyprof

And I have so many dirty holiday wishes, Fancy Santa.

  • msdamselfly

I really like him on The Good Wife

    • TropiCarla

      That show is a delight.

  • Shawn EH

    Killer shoes. Jealousy!

  • River

    Love everything. He owned it.

  • LJCdoc

    Love it.

  • Tanya Wade

It should be illegal to look that utterly charming.

  • Tamara Hogan

I’m not a fan of the matching shoes. Put a black shoe or boot on him to echo the back in his tie, and…voila! Perfection!

    • boweryboy

Black shoes would be too expected. I like the red shoes, and there’s just the right amount of contrast with the blue sole.
Also: Alan Cumming. Hot. In anything.

      • JauntyJohn

My first thought was black shoes, but I agree, actually. Too expected.
But still the sole is not enough for me … and then I thought… Black Shoe Laces!
I love him and this look, but I think black laces would have been dynamite.

  • Synnae

I love it. The whole ton sur ton sur ton sur ton sur dirty smile. LOVE!!!!!

  • LeelaST

Adorable – but would be even better if he’d shaved & washed his hair!

  • BrooklynBomber

Haha. All he needs are a trident and little pointy horns.

  • MikeSJ

His tie is the Cumming tartan – I have one just like it in my closet (my grandmother was a Cumming, although her branch of the family added an s at the end).

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    LOVE HIM SO MUCH!

  • formerlyAnon

    Oh yeah. Especially.

But it’s the way he twinkles as if he’s enjoying himself, or at least enjoying knowing something absolutely delicious that he’s not telling, that makes him bulletproof.

ETA: Though I’ve always thought he’s probably an ego- and soul-destroyingly vicious one during domestic squabbles. He’s smart enough and just has that look about him, to me.

    • demidaemon

I could live with that. Its worth it for all the fabulosity and fun times in-between.

      • formerlyAnon

Well, I’ve learned that I can’t bear much of that kind of interaction, however episodic. More jam for you!

  • melanie0866

    Love.

  • Mona_Visa

Love, love, love. The pros make it look easy.

  • SorayaS

Joy! I swear I’m going to save that last pic to use as my holiday wallpaper!

  • minnye

Yay! An Alan Cumming sighting. I needed that after these past two trying days.

  • LaSylphide

Alan the Elf. What better Christmas present?

  • Big Bear

I so now want a red suit. So much fun!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Damn if Mr. Cummings doesn’t rock that red suit! What fun it would be to have him pop up on my doorstep-we could just sit down with some drinks and gossip!

  • MiriamMc75

OH MY GOD I LOVE HIM SO MUCH

  • Milos Mom

His hair is turning lovely. But I am not feeling the shoes…. I wish they were black or grey even.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Sweet Jesus, take us all home.

  • Claudia

You see Santa, I see a mischevious Red Devil! And I say that with love.

  • Heather

The red shoes give it a devilish quality that I quite enjoy. Thank you, Alan, for being you. I have some naughty wishes also that I’ll tell you in secret.

  • Daktari100

Most people would look ridiculous in that suite, but you can pull it off when you’re Alan Cumming.

    • Daktari100

      *Suit, I mean.

  • Gatto Nero

    Too adorable for words.

  • largishbearishAtlish

would elf ears be toooo much? hmmm?

  • Lilyana_F

That man just puts a smile on my face every single time :)
