WERQ: Lupita Nyong’o in J. Mendel at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards

Posted on October 22, 2013

Boy, we sure have been liberal with our WERQs today, haven’t we? Three in one day is probably a record. Are we just unusually kind-hearted at the moment? Filled with love? Feeling uncharacteristically softhearted about celebrities?

Naah.

Lupita Nyong’o at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a J. Mendel J. Mendel golden textured viscose sleeveless column gown with band detail.

If that’s not a WERQ, we don’t know what is.

Living for her eye makeup, for real. That shit’s ridiculously gorgeous.

    • gorghast

I think there’s something off with the fit (the top?) but the contrast between her skin and the color is so striking that it blinds you to any faults.

      • Domo_Konnichiwa

I think it’s meant for a larger chested-woman. Not a fan of the makeup or the tons of shimmer, but it’s a great color on her.

      • wisdomy

I entirely agree. Girl, this is definitely your color, but this is NOT your neckline.

      • Golfkat

I also think there’s something up with the top. But the rest is fab. I like the bottom and her face is ridiculous. I mean, she’d probably look good in anything with a face like that.

      • Darren Nesbitt

If she is a 10 this dress is like a 6.5, I don’t care for it.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Yes, some chicken cutlets or some alterations were called for. Unfortunately, probably the former, as the design of the dress is really built around having a bust that fills out the top. Still, it is a pretty color on her.

    • Random Compliments

Love her, and this is definitely a WERQ. But make-up artists really need to lay off the shimmer. Jeez.

      • Glam Dixie

I don’t think any of them can, it’s like crack.

        • Little_Olive

          it’s whack.

          • demidaemon

            Crack is whack!

            • Little_Olive

              ;) I just couldn’t help myself.

        • Random Compliments

Agree, but I just think it looks so tacky – like the MUA went overboard at Claire’s.

      • Tracy M

I’m really wanting to give her some Visine. Her poor eyes are so bloodshot they’re making mine water.

Otherwise, she’s stunning. The color is fabulous, and besides the slightly ill-fitting top, the gown is gorgeous on her.

        • MsAfroCAN

LOL I feel you, but it’s called melanin and black people have a lot of it. It’s normal that we have brown spots in our eyes and not the whitest white sclera.

          • Tracy M

I didn’t realize melanin was in the sclera, too. Thanks for correcting my misperception.

            • MsAfroCAN

I’ve had them for years and panicked about it then the doctor said it’s just “eye freckles” lol

      • MsAfroCAN

I hope it’s shimmer. Dark girl makeup always seems to have some sort of white shimmery sheen to it that comes off in pictures, and I think that’s it. Take it from a dark girl who’s tried every major foundation out there.

    • lexilexi

A WERQ and no hairdo… How amazing is that? She is gorgeous perfection.

      • Coco Cornejo

What do you mean no hairdo? It’s called a natural.

        • mmebam

We call it a teeny-weeny Afro in natural hair forums.

          • MilaXX

            Aka the TWA

            • mmebam

I just got my hair cut into one. I’m loving it!

            • MilaXX

Years ago when I got off the creamy crack, I did the big chop. My hair wasn’t as short a Lupita’s, probably closer to Voila’s. It’s a very freeing feeling.

            • mmebam

Lucky! My hair is closer to Lupita’s length, but I still love it. I’m looking forward to the extra money in our budget that salon visits used to take up.

            • TropiCarla

She is breathtaking. What a treat to see more dark chocolate complexions like me on the red carpet.
I had to do another big chop last year when the pregnancy hormones made my hair break. I was loving my TWA which was so friggin fierce. But I started missed my afro puffs, and the variety of longer hair, so I’ve been trying to grow it back over the last few months. Lupita is making me want to renege and head straight to the barbershop.

            • MilaXX

I did mine 15+ years ago. I’ve been though pretty much every natural hair style out there. I must say it’s refreshing to see folks loving the hair that grows out of their own scalp again. Four years ago I loc’d my hair & while I miss my wash n’ go styles, I really love styling my locs.

            • agentilities

When I was growing up, we all had to wear our hair like this for boarding school. I do agree with you on feeling free, there’s no better feeling that waking up and just brushing or combing your hair. I have noticed (with much envy) my East African friends tend to have a bone structure and skin tone that is particularly favourable to wearing short hair.

      • Imasewsure

She really should throw on a crazy cocker spaniel wig next time just to F with us… but this sleek, close-cropped hair is always my favorite. Gorgeous face. Gorgeous style

        • UsedtobeEP

I have always loved this hairstyle on AA women. I wish more would wear it. It’s so sleek—that’s the perfect word.

          • julnyes

enh – not all of us have the skull shape for a closely cropped look.

    • DesertDweller79

Ha! When I saw the photos I thought, “Wow, I love her eye makeup!” Love it when uncles T & Lo validate my opinion!

    • Tanya Wade

I’m for the lipcolor. This one just gets it. The force is strong with her.

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Oh yes. That lip color ought to be renamed for her. She just owns it.

    • lunchcoma

Good lord, can that woman wear a dress.

      • KateShouldBeWorking

She is so poised but lacks try-hard uptightness.

        • Little_Olive

She’s loving it without entitlement. How refreshing.

    • ChaCha_70

That color against her skin is simply beautiful. Finish it off with her dazzling smile and she’s so WERQ-ing it.

    • mmebam

      She is unreal.

      • kimmeister

I’ve yet to see a color that doesn’t flatter her.

        • mmebam

I’m actually of similar coloring. It’s so nice to have more women of my coloring to admire.

          • kimmeister

Go you! I hope you rock the vibrant colors. If I tried to wear this yellow dress, I would look like I had kidney failure.

          • MilaXX

Google Danai from The Walking Dead latest photoshoot. She is giving face and killing it!

            • agentilities

I love Danai Gurira! She gave a splendid performance in “Mother of George”. It’s inspiring to see young and beautiful African women on the screens these days. Even more inspiring….they aren’t wearing weaves….

            • MilaXX

              Amen

            • MilaXX

Someone invited me to come see Mother of George at the Philadelphia Film Festival. Downside is I’d have to get there early and cue up for standby seats and I don’t know if I’m up for that. *Really wanna see this movie though*

    • KateShouldBeWorking

This woman is a style juggernaut.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Juggernaut”. I like that word. :)

        • KateShouldBeWorking

          Her fabulousness cannot be contained!

    • alyce1213

Almost — The color is great for her, the back has something nice going on, and the construction is beautiful.
But I just don’t get the neckline, it’s awkward and doesn’t flatter.

    • NinjaCate

HATE the eyes, because it makes her look like she’s been crying, but that dress…. DAYUM. Serving up some Viola Davis realness. Gorgeous.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

LuNy has been three for three, right? Envious of her amazing lips and incredible biceps!

    • Aidan B

Good God, this woman is gorgeous! I have yet to see her look less than perfect.

    • Trickytrisha

Yeah, the bodice is a tad wonky, the lipstick color isn’t the greatest, but Lupita is applying to the Fashion Goddess club. She’s not quirky like Tilda or HBC, maybe more comparable to Kerry Washington or Cate Blanchett. I’m dying for some more edgy looks from her. Let’s hope she has lots more events to keep her in the limelight.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t love it in comparison to her other bests but we might as well change her name to “WERQ Lupita” because I see a lot of that in her (our) future. Thank GAWD. We needed her

    • Rand Ortega

As my late dad would say, “That’s the kind of woman you sign your paycheck over to”.

There has to be a downside to being that beautiful. Right? Anybody? Buehler?

      • Imasewsure

Being TOO beautiful has always been my problem as well… oh wait…. sorry…. being LATE for everything… that’s me… my bad

    • Courtenay P

she just nails it every time. love it!

    • Glam Dixie

Not a huge fan of this dress on her but the color is SO gorgeous against her skin and yes, her eye makeup is beautiful.

    • msdamselfly

Not feeling the WERQ. The bodice is too big and eyebrows too dark.

    • ashtangajunkie

She is a work of art. I’m convinced that she can wear any and all colour, even on her lips.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

I’ve been waiting for her to wear this color. She is glorious!

    • Little_Olive

Wow, it’s like Alek Wek’s super-nice little sister. I wanna have beers with this woman.
I LOVE that she doesn’t wear a wig.

BTW, I’m not really loving the top of the dress, but who cares.

      • Ceur

Yes, when TLO said that Lupita probably was the only girl to make the Miu Miu dress work I thought “except for Alek Wek”. SO gorgeous. I hope to see her in plenty of bright colours on the red carpet. She is making me reconsider yellow as my official least favourite colour. I’m curious to see her off-carpet style as well!

    • Julie Chase

I can not WAIT to see what she wears during awards season. She is radiant.

    • Clueless_Jock

      Total Goddess.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

      She is so very beautiful

    • NMMagpie

This woman is off the charts. Nothing but respect.

    • Lori

I kind of hate that color, but I’m so blinded by the beautiful that I don’t care. She is truly gorgeous.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m running out of adjectives for gorgeous.

    • MzzPants

Fa.Bu. And, wow, what beautiful, shapely arms.

    • Leah Elzinga

whoever’s in charge of her makeup is INSPIRED. Truly sort of unexpected choices that could ONLY work on THAT face. I mean, really, ORANGE lipstick?? And yet, yup, gorgeous. Tip your gays extra, sweetie.

    • Sara__B

Best red carpet newcomer ever. She’s always stunning.

    • MilaXX

Her MUA is Kay Montano. I only recently heard of her, but I love how she does Lupta’s face.

    • SewingSiren

She’s ranking with the Audreybot’s debut season on the red carpet.

    • J Lardizabal

This dress puckers at her chest and puddles at her feet. Are you guys testing us or something?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I absolutely love her in this color-it’s so vibrant. The make-up accentuates her natural beauty. Bowing down!

    • Taylor

I WOULD KILL FOR HER ARMS.

      That is all.

    • Call me Bee

No! No WERQ when the hem dragging on the carpet. Gentlemen–you often mention and admonish when a man needs his pants hemmed. Why not the women’s hems? Are there no tailors in celebrity-land?

    • filmcricket

Not quite a WERQ for me, the bodice is wonky and it’s too long. But I have been praying for her to wear this colour, I had a feeling it would look stunning, and lo! it does.

    • quiltrx

I’m not sure about the neckline, but I really like the bodice boobs-down. The darts/panels give it an origami-ish look from certain angles, which gives it some interest.

    • 3boysful

I LOVE this dress, altho I agree it’s meant for a larger-busted woman, and they should’ve taken in the seaming a bit. But I love the neckline and the lines, and the color on her. WOW.

    • ItsDicey

The bodice doesn’t quite fit properly, but it’s such a minor quibble. She is truly exquisite!

    • Jean Genetic

This dress is all about the length, and she carries that extra fabric with style!

    • Sadie-Ann

She just always looks so happy. I love it.

    • Joseph

Is the dress a bit long?

    • marlie

This is very pretty! I love the color of the dress, and her makeup is great. She does not disappoint!

    • nannypoo

Well, once again, the most fabulous woman on earth has found the perfect dress. No one else could look as good in this color. Spectacular.

    • Christy Bishop Cricow

      Oh yeah…..

    • macwell

She is my current girl crush!! She has to be the most beautiful women I’ve ‘seen’ in a while. ;)

    • willworktomorrow

No one has mentioned those arms, so I will. Those arms.

    • MM4321

Well done, gorgeous and talented girl. Besides which, huge props standing there like a normal person w/o that “hands-on-hips-elbows-sticking-straight-out” pose that makes me crazy. Well done.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Seriously, Lupita is the life of the red carpet right now.

    • H2olovngrl

TLo and Lupita, sitting in a tree…

    • Jaeda Laurez

Did I not just say she would be sickening in yellow!?!? My reputation as a prophet is made! lol
      Seriously, she looks gorgeous though.

    • MoHub

Wowie, wow, wow! She is definitely one to watch.

    • Adelaidey

How about we let her audition for Nina Simone, and give Zoe Saldana a vacation?

    • Anplica Fiore

      SLAMMING!

    • poggi

I love this. Not only is she wearing a color that few others would wear, she is wearing it better than anyone else. She looks beautiful.

    • KinoEye

So, so stunning. I haven’t seen her look anything less than flawless so far. Love the color on her. And I have so much hair envy — wish I had the bone structure to pull it off. Can’t wait to see this lady on the big screen.

    • Lilithcat

The bust needs a better fit. But that’s picking a nit.

    • sk8tfan

Fit seems a skosh loose in the bust, but I’ll take it because the color is so smashing on her. Love that lipstick on her. She should do what my mother does when she finds a lipstick she likes and buy up every tube of it that’s in the store.

    • stubbornthoughts

This woman is making dresses sing. This is SO her color. I might have a new girl crush…

      • MaggieMae

Might? There’s any doubt? SO have a girl crush!

    • Mazenderan

      Looks fabulous.

    • Diego!

Really a WERQ??? Guys, NO! This is clearly not a WERQ! Her bust is not fitted and the length of the dress makes her look as if she is wearing flats. She looks nice, that´s it.

    • Danielle

      She is straight up FLAW.LESS.

    • jjjoy

this woman is ethereal, flawless, etc etc! she’s a master of the bold dress + bold lip. i think she’d look great in some Mary Katrantzou prints, amirite? can’t wait for her awards seasons looks.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

      Damn…she looks AMAZING!!!!

    • ThaliaMenninger

I love the dress on her, and everything except the lip color in her makeup. I don’t think this shade is what she has been wearing, but I’m not sure the pinker/more fuchshia tone would work with this dress. I think she needs a strong, clear red with a titch less orange. But maybe I wouldn’t like that, either, if I saw it. Or maybe my eyes aren’t working right now. Dunno. But the lip color isn’t quite IT.

      • CKMia

Agree 100%. She needed a hot pink/fuchsia lipstick to keep the mustard color away from her face. Yet still gorge.

    • CKMia

Ill-fitting, not her color and the lipstick is off. Her skin tone has cool undertones and she looks better in cool colors. And yet … she’s drop-dead gorgeous. I would not mind a post on her every day.

    • Constant Reader

She’s one to watch, all right — she’s gorgeous, has great taste, and knows how to work the shit out of an outfit.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Pretty girl, pretty color. Not sure about the fit.

      • Gatto Nero

The fit in the bodice seems to be off. Gorgeous otherwise, though.

    • http://remotelyfashion.blogspot.com/ Remotely Fashion

She’s so gorgeous, I feel like she could pull anything off but that color suits her so well.

    • Kent Roby

I’m pretty sure that if Lupita and Fan Bing Bing were in the same room at the same time, it would affect tidal wave patterns.

    • Zubair Ghumro

      Love the colour on her!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

The lip color is wrong, but wow on everything else.

    • deitybox

I went to school with Lupita and have been waiting for her to show up on TLo!

    • Lilyana_F

Girl is all kinds of stunning.
