WERQ: Katy Perry at the Chanel Spring 2014 Show in Paris

Posted on October 01, 2013

Have a big, steaming cup of positive vibes to start the day, darlings.

We wouldn’t normally consider the pairing of “Katy Perry” and “Chanel” in the same sentence to be an automatic good, but Katy’s in a high-style phase at the moment and bless her heart, she landed on the exact right Chanel for her.

Katy Perry attends the Chanel Spring 2014 Fashion Show during Paris Fashion Week in head-to-toe Chanel.

Chanel Resort 2014 Collection/Model: Pauline Hoarau (ELITE)

And then got it styled up all Katy Perry-like. Which in this case means festooning herself with as much Chanel and diamonds as possible without collapsing under the weight. On someone else, we’d consider such a look to be on the tasteless side of things and sniff in disapproval, but we guarantee you, Uncle Karl was thrilled at the sight of her. Hell, Uncle Karl almost certainly picked everything out for her.

You WERQ that walking-billboard shit, girl. If there’s anyone who can make the vulgar look fun, it’s you.

  • I love her hair and make up with this. She looks great. And that dress even looks like it might be comfortable.

    • conniemd

Her skin looks flawless, the make-up is so well done that it looks like her face doesn’t have any, or a photoshopped magazine cover.

  • Donny F

Gurl has a knot in her heels and a LEGO see-thru purse and still looks amazing. She deserves the WERQ.

    • leahpapa

I know, right? That pretzel heel is a delight.

      • EdithP

I gasped when I saw them.

        • Donna Tabor

          So did I. Very cool.

      • 3boysful

Clever heel, and I am inclined to like them. But a tiny part of me thinks something is slithering up her shoe.

      • paginatrix

        A beautiful touch!

      • veleri

even rihanna wore those shoes with the superlong chanel cardigan, I just noticed it today by chance!
anyway, I still don’t know what I really think about those shoes.

  • SewingSiren

Not a fan of Chanel or the Chanel “look”. not even tasteful Chanel.

    • Samantha

Yeah, I feel like too many people go “walking billboard” when wearing Chanel so I’m not as enthralled by this look. Would rather see this dress with more toned-done and creative accessory choices.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Especially love the way the dress and belt work together. Pretty look… She looks a little more like Winona Ryder than Katy Perry for some reason…

    • Its the top knot thing. Gotta be.

    • The belt on her version looks much better than the catwalk version. Very nice! I can see the Winona Ryder too – maybe it’s because she’s come out without the big Katy Perry smile? And the knotted heels are cool!

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Yes – the smile is missing!!

  • How does it manage to also seem so casual yet totally event appropriate? It’s some sort of Chanel voodoo magic. It’s lux, it’s relaxed, it’s cute, it’s rich. It’s so many things that seem to contradict, yet all works beautifully.

  • shirab

Katy honey, could you shift your purse strap a bit and adjust your neckline? It’s off-kilter and making me a little nuts.

  • Diego!

At first I wasn’t so sure this was a WERQ, but then I re-checked everything and I must agree. This is a WERQ from head to toe. Well done Katy!

  • MilaXX

Cute. I think I love those shoes. My only quibble is she should have done without the necklace because between the necklace,m bag and belt it;s a bit much.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

I scrolled down to make sure someone already wrote what I had in mind 🙂 I totally agree about the necklace. It’s just too much chain.

  • Jessica Freeman

I could do without the necklace and if she would have used the purse as a clutch. Otherwise, this is spot on Katy Perry.

  • Miranda

    Just too busy for me.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

I feel like I’m gonna have a seizure from it all.

  • ojosazules

The neck chain isn’t working for me. Too heavy. Hate the heels.

  • kmk05

I wish I liked this. I don’t hate it, but… it’s a bit tasteless. It’s not particularly sleek or chic, but that may not be Katy Perry’s fault and more the position the Chanel brand has been adopting the past few seasons.

  • Vickiefantastico

Am I looking at the same pictures??? This is SO tacky. It’s too busy with the shirt, too long skirt, ugly shoes, and purse all together. Add the too severe hair, and all I see is a mess!

ETA – oh, and the heavy accessories as well. WERQ, seriously?

  • filmcricket

I’m sorry, I know this is off topic, but TLo, what happened to the Tag Map? I wanted to check a particular Mad Style post, and putting “Mad Style” in the search box appears to bring up every post that had either one of those words in it, I think.

As for Katy, I don’t care for the clutch, but everything else looks good.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I think I would’ve changed out the belt for something thinner and maybe all leather because the chain hanging down her butt looks cheap. Love the logo buttons on the shoulders. Those knot heels are awesome and boy o boy do I NEEED those sunglasses.

  • teensmom99

Love, love, love the classic chanel spectator pumps with a knot in the heel. Brilliant. WERQ it!

  • Hermione

I find this very unattractive, very matronly, because of the busy print, too-long skirt, poor choice of belt and necklace.
My first impression: she’s wearing a “housedress” like the ones my grandma used to wear (but with a longer skirt.)
I’m sure the fabric is actually amazing and maybe “in real life” and up close this looks good, but from here–no.

  • Judy_S

I dunno. I am not feeling the Katy Perry-ness. Which is fine–she’s growing up and changing. I think it’s the severe hairstyle and quiet makeup.

    I love those shoes, though.

  • Aurumgirl

I love the shaped heel on the shoes. But anyone dressed head to toe in Chanel who sports dark glasses and keeps her hair raked back reminds me of Karl Lagerfeld. I’m sure that’s what he intended to accomplish, so there’s that.

  • Clair Ellis

I don’t particularly like the dress, but I do like seeing Katy not so cartoony so I’ll take it! She’s gorgeous when she doesn’t have blue hair.

  • ringthing

She has the haughty, carefully concealed awe on her face that I imagine anyone feels wearing head to toe Chanel as flamboyantly as possible. She looks great and those shoes are hilariously OTT.

  • Coleen

I want those shoes so much that it isn’t funny.

  • Not applicable

i’m actually not surprised she could rock the Chanel. She is beautiful in a very classic way- her features and figure are pretty ideal. We just never get to see that because we’re too distracted by her whipped cream bra and blue hair.

  • Pudgy Possum

I like it, but it really is a little too busy…Not a WERQ for me,

  • decormaven

Those shoes… gasp! Wish she had gone for a red lip closer to the manicure color; other than that, she’s repping well for the House of Chanel.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I’m actually not loving this on her. Both the fit and the print look too big. I think it could have been fitted for her just a little better, but the main problem is that the print just overwhelms her. If it was a smaller print and a better fit, I could have given this a “WERQ!”, because everything else is right.

  • MissMariRose

I love how the reflection of the flashbulbs in her sunglasses make her look like she has stars in her eyes in those first two photos.

  • GillianHolroyd

Head-to-toe love. Those are *her* sunglasses. Never take them off.

  • Garcia Loca

Almost-WERQ, because the shoes are incongruent with the look. (Yes, even though the model wore them too.)

  • Those shoes are gasp-worthy. The purse would have been much better as a clutch–too many chains, I think, as do many other BKs, I see. Also I wish the dress were shorter…..I don’t think the fade to wrinkly opaque-ness is very attractive. But I agree she is stylin’ in a big way.

  • cocohall

This look is so OTT that I can actually smell the Chanel perfume through my computer. Because you know she dunked herself in it before she headed out (Save the Katy Purry for another time). I like it – unlike Salma’s head to toe black and white look from the other day that swallowed her whole, this look still has enough whimsy to make sense on Katy.

  • Kelly

Love the shoes. Not crazy about the rest of it. Too much going on, even for Katy. Too much hardware, too long, really matronly neck- and sleeve-line.

  • stellamaris73

I wish I could agree on the WERQ. Between the busy pattern, abundance of chains, and the length of the skirt, this completely overwhelms her. And that necklace competes with the neckline of the dress.

  • sagecreek

Is it just me, or has she really upped her game of late?

Also, I’m dying to see a clear shot of those shoes.

  • rebeemoon

And yet, all I can see is chains. She looks positively weighed down, especially at the neck.

  • SugarSnap108

Wish the skirt was shorter. Between that and all the chains, the whole look is too weighed down. I’d also lose the neck chain — it looks like the one my brother uses for his rottweiler (she’s a stylish dog). But against all reason, I love those shoes.

  • oohsparkley!

I thought the color of the shoes was off a little. But as a whole it’s a werq. The chain is also pulling her top off center, so a different purse. She is soo purrty!

  • lrhoff

Enh. It looks very stiff and unattractive. Sorry, but it’s not working for me at all. It appears as if she’s playing dress up with her mommy’s clothes.

  • SouthernGirlRena

After all my whining about why is no one wearing necklaces, I miss necklaces, this would look better with a necklace, I don’t like her necklace. I guess there is no pleasing me.

  • melanie0866

The HEEL of that SHOE. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So effing cool.

  • Janet B

Love her glasses, hair, makeup and shoes.

Up close, the dress is just too much and the jewelry is over the top.

  • Guest

LOVE! Love the print, love the shape of the tee, love the shoe, the bag, the hair, the glasses. Need I go on?! One tiny thing, I don’t think the necklace is bad but do see where some peeps are coming from, maybe the necklace as a bracelet? On her left arm?

  • I love the choker on her, just not with this. The rest of it is pretty great, especially the hair and shoes. Keeping it fun with the knot in the heel.

  • stubbornthoughts

I hate myself for saying this, but I much prefer this on the model.

However, I concur this WERQ based solely off of the incredible face Katy is offering up.

  • Fancy bitch realness.

  • kimmeister

I’d like this dress more if the proportions were better. She’s not tall enough for this dress, and the waist (plus the placement of the belt) are too low on her.

    • demidaemon

That is my quibble as well. I wish the hem was just a skotch higher, and then it would be perfect for me.

  • Heather

I always like a ballerina bun, but otherwise this isn’t working for me.

  • Kent Roby

That purse is kinda fab and horribly impractical at the same time; I’m just imagining someone wearing it with a tampon and a Pop Tart showing through. The new (literal) twist on the the heel makes me very happy, though.

  • Imasewsure

Those shoes are interesting… love high fashion daisy clothes too

  • Jacqueline Wessel

    Love this!

  • Elleachaudaucul

She’s doing her best to sell it, but the combined effect of the two prints is more than a whiff of frumpiness.

  • Shawn EH

Well, one great thing about Chanel in general, it’s so chic in proportion and cut that the more baubles you pile on, the better. All that silver looks great with all that busy black and white.

  • alyce1213

This is very chic, very advanced dressing. My only quibble is that it looks a bit large on her. The shoes are to die for.
I think her looks are perfect for Chanel and I’d like to see her in more, and some vintage.
I’ll say it again — I’m thrilled she’s out of her blue period.

  • bellafigura1

I’m missing it too. The dress or wtf-ever it is does not fit, the print is horrible, the hair is brain-squeezing, the accessories don’t go, chokers, ugh, the sunglasses are silly-looking and she has a scowl and one forced smile. Blech.

    Love the shoes, though!

  • anneland

    Skirt is too long.

  • Trisha26

Good lord, no. This seems like part deux of the Salma Hayek Balenciaga post a couple days ago. Katy’s tall, yet even with those heels the skirt looks too long for her. No werq for me.

  • mhleta

Sorry, but this reads like Chico’s packable knits to me. I don’t get Chanel from it at all.

  • bertkeeter

Entire outfit makes her look heavy and dowdy! Maybe w o all the doodads it may have worked…. But like this not YOUNG or HIP!

    • mhleta

Right??? Put it in a box and send it to Iris Apfel, glasses, jewelry and all.

  • Sam Smith

Like the dress, the hair, the makeup, the sunglasses, the chain belt. Get rid of the shoes, the bag and the neck chain and this would be a WERQ. It is just too much.

  • marlie

She looks Katy Perry-type fabulous. And I’d kill for those shoes.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I love the hair and the sunglasses. But the garments look too big and shapless on her, and those shoes look like she spiked her heel on dog poop. Yeah, it’s not werqin’ for me.

  • Cheat-ah

Tacky, bag of sack. You’re right, vulgar suits her to a T. Wahhh, I want my drapes back.

    • Kristin McNamara

I don’t actually get it. What is vulgar here? I see nothing even remotely vulgar.

  • kathrineb

I’m not feeling it to be honest. There is a lot going on without it being especially flattering.

  • LadyLuck777

The heels, while interesting, have a matronly color and feel to them. The hair is severe. The belt and neck chain doesn’t seem to go with the flowy casual of the dress. I will have to take TLo’s word for it, because I just don’t get it.

  • xmixiex

  • THOSE SHOES. I DIE. I want them for my next regatta gala.
