WERQ: Charlize Theron in Alexander McQueen at the Annenberg Center Gala

Posted on October 18, 2013

All y’all better start bowing down right this second. Miss Charlize is SERVING.

Charlize Theron attends the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts Inaugural Gala in an Alexander McQueen black and gold embroidered gown with draped back paired with Salvatore Ferragamo accessories.

If you absolutely have to wear a black dress on a red carpet (and this month, you apparently do), then goddamn it, you put on the most head-turning black dress you can find and step onto that red carpet blasting everyone in the face with your fierceness. And if it’s a skosh too tight and you can’t quite zip it up all the way, you STILL rock the shit out of it because you are Miss Charlize Fucking Theron and no motherfucker’s gonna use the word “funeral” when you’re in the room, because you are far too busy giving us all LIFE.

“Smirking in your McQueen gown” SNAPS, girl. RESPECT.

LOVE this. For me, she has an edge to her that I never felt she was right for Dior…McQueen is closer to her public persona. Warrior woman

    • Rhonda Shore

and not only do you have edge and not only do you serve, but you actually look great with nude make-up…possibly the only one who does, in fact!

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I know! It looks good on almost no one except her!

  • Emily Smith

Who the hell is McQueen making dresses for if Charlize Theron can’t even zip it? I didn’t even notice it wasn’t fully zipped until you guys mentioned it!

    • amanda siegelson

i noticed it immediately – but you have asked my question – how small does a person have to be???? please! it’s actually really upsetting!

    • Coolekat

I don’t think it is a failed zipper. What you see us where the flounce is merged with side seam. It was a bad sewing job and it makes for that horrible illusion that it isn’t zipped all the way.

      • makeityourself

The zipper didn’t fail. It’s a black invisible zipper and the stop will hold in position anywhere along the coil. Charlize has a waist that’s about 1-2 inches too big for the dress. Which leads me to question exactly how this occurred. Surely she went through at least one fitting for the gown.

Here’s my theory. Maybe the original fitting called for the waist to be taken in, and then there was no second fitting between the time of alterations and the event.

So Charlize goes to put on the dress, and the seamstress somehow misread the tailor’s chalk marks and took it in twice the amount required. Now Charlize is in trouble because she’s ready to head out the door and the damn thing does not fit. Her stylist determines that leaving it unzipped for two inches will be undetedtable and assuringly sends Miss C on her way. BAD IDEA.

Sorry gents, this cannot be a Werq because the dress doesn’t fit. Remember when Xtina tried this a while back? I believe she was mocked.

    • Donyelle

the lettuce edge finish and cheap zipper was driving me nuts.

    • Aurumgirl

My thoughts exactly. Why any clothing manufacturer would bother to show their clothes in anything but an impeccable light (and that means PERFECT fit, no matter what) beats me. Even if the zip is all the way up, that means what we’re actually looking at there is a terrible job of sewing the closure and back seams of the dress. That one detail makes the dress look cheap.

      • jen_vasm

Somebody at McQueen’s house needs their hat handed to them and shown the door for this.

  • RussellH88

She is serving up some Aileen Wuornos realness because she is SLAYING me.

  • Noah

I’m actually not sold on this. The unzipped back is only half the problem, because the excess fabric seems to be giving it a weird shape. Also, it seems like her hair matches the shoulders a bit too much. Am I alone here?

    • filmcricket

Nope, I’m pretty much with you. I mean, she looks amazing because she always does, but I don’t care for the back OR the shoulder treatments.

    • tereliz

I don’t mind the back, but I feel like this dress would be better served with sleeker hair. I agree, it does seem to match the gold on her shoulders too closely.

    • DTLAFamilies

She’s stunning. The dress is problematic. The edging on the back panels looks cheap.

      • Tatiana Luján

“The edging on the back panels looks cheap.” I agree 100%

    • KateShouldBeWorking

      The back is bizarrely delicate.

    • Tatiana Luján

      You are not alone.

    • omg_dora

I don’t like the dress at all. It looks awkward and ugly… and cheap, now that some other people have mentioned it. But she always looks amazing because of her face (unless she puts on some really bad makeup), so she looks amazing here.

    • PeaceBang

You have my full support. She’s gorgeous as always, but I don’t love it.

  • ovarB

Pardon my OCD and ADD kicking in and working against each other but all I notice is the backdrop behind her. Someone had to have the job to glue down a gagillion leaves onto that backdrop. But oh yes, Charlize is serving!! Serving up Autumnal Leafy Goddess!!!

  • JauntyJohn

Ladies and gentlemen and those who choose to travel the spectrum between the two, THIS is how it is done.
Classic but not boring. Fierce but not brittle. Diva, not drama queen.
    Also: LUV that hair.

    • Diego!

    • Loola234

      HATE the hair!

She looks great that but this is a hair mis-step…

  • Mismarker

Serving up some “I put my wig on backwards” realness.

    • Kristin McNamara

      AKA Bieber realness.

  • The Queen in McQueen. I am currently figuring out how to emulate in every day wear….

  • Rand Ortega

  • another_laura

Should we say that she is SMERQing in her McQueen?

  • Nicholas

All shall love her and despair.

    • ChaCha_70

  • Josh Moncayo Orbeta

Guuuuuuuuuuuuurl. You deserve a pouty neck roll.

  • ChaCha_70

She is not real. I can’t imagine her beauty in person if she looks so stunning in photos.

  • Diego!

I’m speechless… SHE IS BRINGING THE MOTHER F HOUSE DOWN! I bow endlessly! Mrs. Charlize looks STUNNING and KNOWS IT! You WERQ that unzipped dress, Mrs. Movie Star 🙂

  • TLJezebel

I cannot get past the zipper debacle.

  • decormaven

Oh, for a sweeping staircase to showcase this look, a full Ernest Bachrach treatment. All hail the Queen! [bows down]

  • Bexxx

THE HAIR i need that HAIR (and her face)

    • ChaCha_70

You can have the hair and face, I’ll take her bod.

  • Synnamin

I swear that you could dress a brick in McQueen and it would look fabulous.

  • There’s a sort of “I was having hot sex in the car and only got half dressed” look to this that makes it WERQ.

  • Krysta

Once you realize the dress doesn’t fit in a fairly basic way, her facial expression looks like somebody is in trouble once Miss C is off the clock! Which goes with the dress perfectly.

  • Slinky, Amazonian Bitch.

  • bitts

I just love her hair like this SO. MUCH. Also, I just want to know what her shoes are like. No need to see them, I just want to KNOW.

  • Tatiana Luján

The unzipped zipper looks terrible and the dress needs to be hemmed.

  • marlie

I LOVE this on her. And her hair looks great!

  • boweryboy

The zipper thing is working my last anal rententive nerve, and I’m not loving the open back and the shoulder foofraraw. One or the other, please.

Even so, she looks fabulous. Either she, or her gays, knows exactly what they’re doing – minus the zipper thing, of course.

    • Datura

I agree. The zipper is making my eye twitch, but she looks lovely.

  • StylishDreaming

Love this dress on her, but that haircut screams adolescent-boy. The uneven length on the right side, where it’s coming down to her forehead, is bothering me.

    • charlotte

The Fug Girls called it the golden Bieber.

      • kimmeister

I was totally thinking “boy band” myself. I don’t like it.

  • Fyolette

I actually think that the dress COULD zip all the way up, and probably was initially; it would certainly be tight, but not ripping-tight, I would say it half-unzipped because of the poor quality of the zipper itself, where there’s no proper ‘lock’ or whatitsname in the end of it, and so it tends to unzip eventually. I have troubles believing that McQueen would deal with poor quality sewing paraphernalia, but that’s the impression I get somehow. Still a total WERQ for me though.

    • demidaemon

Your explanation seems more believable than those I’ve seen above. It’s still stupid–this is McQueen we are talking about, not some PR outfit made in a day–but reasonably logical explanation.

  • Kelly

From the front, she looks great, even with the weird helmut hair. I wish the back fit better and that we could skip the amateurish-looking bow.

  • Anne At Large

The upshot of this series of photos is that I now need to rewatch that movie where she played a badass queen and Thor was her huntsman. For reasons.

  • MilaXX

I liked it until I saw the back. Then it lost me because of the way the back flops open due to her not being able to zip it all the way up.

  • I wish they had come up with something other than that stupid bow to hold the dress together in the back. Otherwise, it’s perfect, and so is she, all 6’7″ and 102 pound of her, dammit.

  • Qitkat

While the unzip is an issue, she herself has a gorgeous back. And beautiful posture. She could give lessons to so many wannabe divas.

  • Agatha Guilluame

    Luv her!

  • Lynzee Michelle Lamb

She’s got Bieber hair, but I love the dress.

  • Nazzzy

    LOVE her hair!

  • kimiakay

If anyone could wear this dress it would be Charlize. But the dress, for a McQueen, the tinsel-like spangles on each shoulder, and that zipper (or not) issue in the back? What is that? I think the dress isn’t so much too long as maybe it has a short train. But Ms. Charlize of the perfect body and beautiful face, your makeup is flawless and your tousled hair suits just fine.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Whoever is doing her hair has really come up with quite a few styling options, not that easy with a short cut. She does indeed look fierce.

  • traceyishere

    She is giving me life!

  • tarqueeny

I don’t like this look. The dress looks really dated and the gold embellishments look tacky. I also don’t think the hairstyle suits Charlize. Nope, not a fan of this overall.

  • beebee10

You guys!! Some days, you give me LIFE!
    Cracking up and bowing down

  • LaSylphide

I have come to the conclusion that Ms. Theron is a graduate of Hogwart’s Academy of Withcraft and Wizardry, because nobody without magical powers could look that gorgeous all the time, no matter how she’s dressed. I don’t even really like the dress that much, but on her: fabulous.

  • Dagney

LUV HUH…….She always look good, even in those casual around the city photos. always. rocks. She has a self confidence that really shines through in her photographs, and I love that she does not try to blab on about her “beauty secrets” and “weight loss tips.” When asked about these subjects during interviews, she is very blunt and honest about going under the knife. Never any bullshit from this lady and I like that.

  • Trickytrisha

I can just see thousands of women all over the place stampeding to their hairdressers and demanding that hair cut. Hell, someone in South Korea right now is getting that hair. Also Ireland, Panama, Estonia, Australia, Uruguay, and so forth. Anyway, it’s a super cool cut on a beautiful, gorgeous, amazing woman, one who’s wearing a difficult dress and making it look spectacular.

  • I don’t think anyone else on this or any other planet could get away with that hair. Amazing.

  • macwell

B*************h – you better just WERQ that McQuen out and let the other basic b***he’s eat it! Bow DOWN! 😉

  • Zubair Ghumro

I love that hair and she is divine!

  • quiltrx

    Again…preternaturally beautiful!

  • Andrew Stein

Terrible, ice dancing alien trashy. Sad.

  • The Bowler

Can we talk about her hair though? THAT is how you rock a pixie.

  • H2olovngrl

She has been, and always will be; my fence jumper.

  • Lilyana_F

Divine! She is at the top of my most frequent gasp inducers.That. Face.

  • She has a beautiful back in this dress.

Those gold shoulder things look absurd. There is nobody who can pull those off.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Charlize is ALWAYS a WERQ post!

    • I am re-writing my will as we speak to set aside funds to pay Charlize Theron to come to my funeral dressed like this.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Even with the zipper mishap, this is still a stunning, headturning look. That said, I would expect some communication between Theron’s stylist and the McQueen shop about this.

  • tixilyttik

I’m sorry but I don’t care how beautiful she is or how amazing the dress is on her…she should not have worn it unless it could be zipped up. That’s just wrong.
Is it truly not zipped up? I can’t tell for sure but it looks like maybe the dress was made that way.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She really knows how to work the short hair. LOVE.

  • Call me Bee

Very lovely. It needs to be hemmed up about a quarter inch.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

The close-up on the gold detailing is a sight to behold.

  • Sam Smith

I was wondering about the back too, to me the dress almost looked ripped, but now I get it, the zipper is not up all the way. And, I now feel better about my post weekend tummy pooch.

  • Shawn EH

That dress is sorta busted, but she looks great in it.
