Vanessa Hudgens at The Carrie Diaries Season 2 Premiere

Posted on October 01, 2013

A belly shirt, with accompanying belly jewelry, on Vanessa Hudgens, on the red carpet somewhere should be something that sends us into high conniption, Aunt Pittypat-style, but this is the CW and her head looks pretty fantastic here, so we just can’t work up the energy to flick our fans open.

Vanessa Hudgens at the The Season 2 Premiere Party for “The Carrie Diaries” at Gansevoort Hotel Rooftop in New York City.

We really don’t love anything she’s wearing, but the outfit on a whole doesn’t offend us. If nothing else, you’ve got to give this girl credit for dressing comfortably, for the most part. You don’t see her in many corsets or push-up bras. Really, the big sell here is happening north of the neck, where she’s looking knockout. We know a lot of the Bitter Kittens hate the ombre hair trend and to be fair, we’re not strongly in favor of it ourselves, but some ladies really know how to pull it off. Vanessa’s looks pretty good to our eyes.

  • She has a very large fringed purse, if she needs some sort of modesty screen. She’s pretty and she isn’t wearing lace pants. It’s a win.

    • kmk05

I was gonna say that the only thing I really don’t like is the fringe purse! That and her nails, which are too pink for this look. A darker polish (burgundy or dark khaki) would have been the icing on the very nice cake here. She really is pulling it all off: her face looks phenomenal, and is perfectly framed by that magnificent mane.

It always surprises me how she pulls off her hair, when Selena Gomez always looks swallowed up by hers.

      • mlle

I can’t put my finger on it, but maybe her face is a better shape for the pound of hair.

    • Karen Belgrad

      It’s a purse merkin!

      • anotherkate

“Purse Merkin” is the name of my new band.

        • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Need help with the souveniers, a Purse Merkin merchant, perchance?

          • anotherkate

First souvenir? A knock-off Birkin Merkin.

      • Emily Dagger

        A purkin, if you will.

      • merkin bag? awesome 😀

        • Karen Belgrad

I hereby default to your awesomeness!

  • Emily Dagger

Yeah, this may be the best deployment of ombre hair I’ve ever seen. Well done, Disney escapee.

    • kimmeister

Agreed. I think it works because it’s all in the same family of tones, rather than going from brown to red or something like that.

      • quiltrx

Agree with you both–I also think this ombre actually works–like you said, same family of tones, and to me the transitions are very gradual. Most times it looks like “my color is growing out.”

        • sweetestsith

The gradual transition is KEY, imho, and yet so many people do not achieve that. It also helps that her blonde areas are fairly concentrated at the tips, with lots of mid tones before her roots.

If I could afford a version of ombre this pretty, I would totally be all over it. Like a shameless trend whore. 😉

  • Calinda_L

Her head may look fantastic (okay, there’s really no “may” about it; it looks fantastic), but her face is a hot flashbacked mess. Honey girl should probably employ a better makeup artist next time.

    • kmk05

I don’t know, it’s not that much lighter. Or maybe my screen is more forgiving!

      • Calinda_L

I see it most in the first picture. There’s just a bit of a… haze over her face. If nothing else, it just looks like she’s wearing SO. MUCH. makeup.

        • kmk05

True! But then. she always is: I don’t think I’ve seen her ‘fresh-faced’ ever.

  • random_poster

She pulls the duck face look so often, that seeing her with a big old smile on her face is refreshing. Keep in mind that the star wore Kmart, so I think it’s all good.

  • Bronzer isn’t everyone’s best friend, but it should be her Biffle. (Love this look on her.)

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Hey! Disqus IS working – how lovely!!
Fabulous hair – she’s almost always snapped smiling – and it looks great on her. I’m going to ignore everything else going on here…

  • sagecreek

Very cute, and if you can’t wear that outfit at her age, well then, when can you?

  • teensmom99

Like all things we bitter kittens hate, ombre hair (and even cocker spaniel hair) can look great when done well. So, well done,Vanessa. And why are we bitter? We are bitter because so often we see so many things done poorly. Why occasionally, we even like a handkerchief hem but mostly we just see horrifying mullets. Really, we weren’t always bitter.

    • Karen Belgrad

Totes (and I hate that word) agree! I dislike ombre hair when it looks like Amanda Woodward’s root run amok. But when it’s subtle and complimentary, I actually like it!!!

    • Tânia

I like the ombre on Vanessa, but I just can’t with the cocker spaniel hair. It’s too much.

  • In my mind, she’s there as a mentor to the up and coming actresses. You know, since she’s the Old Pro in young Hollywood.

  • hughman

    Shakira Lite.

    • Karen Belgrad

I was thinking Baby Sofia (Vergara).

  • gsk241

If boystars and manstars are showing up on red carpets in jeans, tshirts, and scuffed boots, I don’t see why a girlstar can’t show up in a belly shirt. Her outfit isn’t my style or taste, but I do think she looks cute.

    Too much hair, though, IMHO.

  • majorbedhead

    She looks adorable.

Do these baby stars take lessons in how to leave your hair the fuck alone? Because if I had hair like that, it would be behind my shoulders and probably pulled back somehow. How do they keep it from getting into their lipstick and snagged on their clothing? This mere mortal wants to know.

  • Constant Reader

It’s the CW and she looks like she’s headed out for drinks and dancing with the girls. Works for me.

  • HVM

I miss her London wardrobe from a few months ago.

    • mhleta

      So much!

  • NoveltyRocker

Too much makeup for a belly-baring shirt and press-ons—let those do the work of classing things up.

  • Imasewsure

Not sure of the dress code but this seems like a perfect outfit for a NYC rooftop party. Kind of love her anyway though

  • YoungSally

Hate to get that chain caught in my zipper.

  • steeg of their own

Put away the extensions, girl. It just looks cheap when your head seems to be sprouting four times the hair it should be able to hold naturally. Your fringed purse should never invite comparisons to your scalp, but in this case it’s inevitable. (The purse wins. It at least has a chance at trendy. I don’t care about ombre at all, but the too-thick scalp-fringe just makes you look desperate.)

  • Trisha26

The word “belly” sends me into conniptions.

  • VictoriaDiNardo

I can’t help but feel that the whole “ombre hair” thing is based on someone who is considered “cool” somewhere along the line just let their blond grown in and didn’t bother to do the color, and a few other people thought that was really cool that it was so blase’ to not care and then it became a thing. As a short-haired blond who loves her roots I kind of get it, but somehow it annoys me. Faux Re-growth? Please.

    End of Rant.

ETA – oh yeah, she looks cute.

  • MissWix

    Baby Vergara.

  • rkdgal

“Uncle Peter — where are my smelling salts?!” Thanks for making me think of Aunt Pittypat 🙂

  • largishbearishAtlish

I like (not love) the color of the coat, NOT a fan of the Lee Press On Nails…the big fringed purse is “interesting”. (belly button stuff…yawn)

  • I do have to give her snaps, the dye job is flawless.

  • She just kind of exhausts me from all the effort she appears to be making.

  • MilaXX

I think this is a cleaned up version of her personal style. It suits the venue & everything fits, not something Vanessa has always nailed in the past. I thinks it’s okay and yes, the face and hair are working.

  • mhleta

Off duty waitress in a Reno strip club. When did that become a look to aspire to? Anyone catch Kesha on the I Fart Radio show? Still trying to figure out how to boil my eyeballs after that skankfest. Apparently “Diseased Coke Whore” is also a theme. VH appears virginal by comparison.

  • Celeste

    Love the Aunt Pitty-Pat reference!!

  • luckymom22

I am so happy that she finally got the memo to stop with the duck face! i don’t care what you wear, honey–just keep smiling!! You’re beautiful!

  • kathrineb

The belly piercing is giving me flashbacks of the girls I went to high school with. Not my fav thing!

  • Adrianna Grężak

the green blouse reminds me of all the oversized army green jackets I see tiny girls wear around NYC. I kind of like that she’s doing an upscale version of common street clothes

  • paintedfish

that show got a second season?!?

  • Erica_Vuitton

I had dangly navel jewelry like that too… in 1999!! Come on girl… really? I like everything except the purse, something smaller and without fringe would’ve been better.

  • ashtangajunkie

That is some seriously gorgeous hair – the kind that makes me want to grow out my hair, even though I never will. I don’t like the outfit at all, but she looks really cute in it and her face looks pretty.

  • cocohall

So if you pull the belly button jewelry, will she talk? She reminds me of those dolls I had when I was younger that would say 4-5 phrases over and over “Did I miss the 70s?” “Do you have a spliff?” “I just got my nails done!” “Dolly wants you to brush her hair!”

  • SylviaFowler

    She looks like a streetwalker.

Meanwhile, there are new Kiernan Shipka pictures……..

  • decormaven

That green is a wonderful shade for her. If she had chosen a darker nail polish and lost the belly button jewelry, I could get behind this look. But hey, it’s a CW red carpet, so she’s dressed for the venue.
