Sarah Paulson in Vivienne Westwood at the “12 Years A Slave” Premiere

Posted on October 09, 2013

We don’t know what it is with this chickie and her styling team lately, but they all seem determined to make her look as washed out and brittle as possible. Is the blonde for a role? Because otherwise, it’s not her friend when it comes to being photographed.

She’s also been wearing some severe and/or odd-looking stuff lately. This is actually an improvement on some of her recent looks.

“American Horror Story” star Sarah Paulson attends the premiere of “12 Years A Slave” during the 2013 New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall in a Vivienne Westwood dress accessorized with Christian Louboutin shoes and Fred Leighton jewelry.

But we still don’t like it. There’s such a thing as a little too much draping in one garment. Of course that’s to be expected with Westwood, but we don’t think Sarah can really pull it off. You need some bearing to make even a tiny little Vivienne Westwood dress work.

Also: it looks like we may have been wrong in making the call after the Emmys that the red carpet was soon going to be awash in color. That trend hasn’t quite materialized, to our intense disappointment. Lots of blacks for fall. Black dresses with black shoes and black purses. Yawn. This look would have been vastly improved with any sort of color added to it. She seems determined to look like a ghost lately.

Okay, fine. We’ll go have another cup. Crankiness.

Totally wrong body for Westwood. Where is HBC when we need her? Oh who am I kidding; we always need her.

  • Diego!

This is a mess from head to toe… NO NO NO!

  • Karen Belgrad

She’s almost always a blonde (Grey’s Anatomy, Studio 60)… I believe the few times she’s had dark has was specific to a role.

    • Tafadhali

That’s what I was going to say! People keep commenting on her blonde hair, and I’m like “…isn’t that just how it is?”

    • PastryGoddess

I always thought her blonde was a warmer color. This hair color seems very cool to me.

      • Karen Belgrad

I don’t think the white background and up-do are helping. It’s hard to tell if she’s got a dishwater hue going or if her highlights are just all pulled back.

  • 3boysful

I have loved her since Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, but I has a sad because nothing here is working for her.

  • Kelly

She also needs a better RC stance. Shoulders back, Sarah! Unlock those knees! And is that a wide stance in Photo 3? Ditch it. It didn’t work for Larry Craig; it won’t work for you.

  • RussellH88

This looks a bit like a trash bag.

Maybe she’s depressed about losing the Emmy. I know I was depressed that she lost.

    • Suzanne Moore

Yes! A Project Runway red carpet trash bag challenge.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

This would make more sense if this was a photo call for the new season of American Horror (can’t wait to watch tonight). It looks appropriately witchy.

  • Adrianna Grężak

The dress reads a little too Halloween

  • filmcricket

This is possibly the best she’s ever looked on the RC. I know that’s not saying much, but I’m calling it a win regardless, because her default seems to be washed-out frump. While Westwood is maybe not the best choice for her, with some proper styling this could have been gangbusters, or at least her version of gangbusters.

    • Lori

This was sort of my thought. Looking bad on the red carpet is not a new thing for her and AFAICR this is a step up from most of the stuff she’s worn. It’s not good mind, but it’s better than usual.

  • It’s as if she’s employed Julianne Moore’s discarded stylist. Similar mistakes in having no real idea what flatters the client and instead relying on micro trends and personal preference. But Sarah is often a problem child, so who really knows?

  • What does one wear to the premiere of 12 Years a Slave? You can’t trot out something super somber, like you’re all “Oh hey, I made a serious movie.” But something kicky and fun seems inappropriate too.

  • lynnlee

Maybe she’s staying in character for AHS.

  • Daisy Walker

Girl, that is not your dress/look/anything.

  • Nariya

For what it’s worth, her eyes look very pretty.

  • jmorino08

She looks like she is seconds away from the entire dress falling right off of her.

  • formerlyAnon

That is Not Her Hair, imo. (I object to style more than to color.)

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

No, you’re right. She desperately needs a new team.

  • Guest

Botox on the top, tattoo on the bottom. Eww.

  • epenthesis

“Brittle” is exactly the word. Something about how the hem falls on her knees makes her look like she’ll crumble into powder if touched.

Not a disaster, but she’s not doing herself any favors here.

    • conniemd

Her face and hair look like Nicole Kidman

  • The dress just overwhelms her – she looks tiny and almost frail!

  • MilaXX

She doesn’t know how to pose/stand on the RC either. I’m not crazy about this dress on her. She’s not enough of a fashionista to make it work. Lucy Lui could shut things down in this. IIRC she’s been blonde before. I think she was blonde on that Mathew Perry show Studio 60 so I’m not sure it’s for a role as much as she just likes to be blonde occasionally.

  • cocohall

Is it a “thing” to have the contours of your smile echoed in the neckline of your dress? (check photo 2) Because that odd little detail jumped out at me and I can’t get past it. But I believe this is the same woman that wore to some Emmy event those odd blue drop crotch pants that could be used to smuggle Christmas hams, so yes, a big improvement over THAT. She might get away with a few rashers of Canadian bacon in her décolletage, but that’s about it.

  • marlie

With the blonde hair and the neutral(-ish) makeup, her entire head is almost monochromatic. I like the bodice of the dress, but not the bottom; the skirt needs to be either more tapered, or longer.

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

Oh dear, looks like a prom dress made from a hefty bag.

  • Anne At Large

Gah. Sarah, you’re gorgeous, now please go call the stylists/costumers from Down With Love. PLEASE!

  • decormaven

Too technical a look for a fashion rookie. This takes some diva skills to successfully pull off. She’s a handsome woman; too bad her style team can’t catch her essence and showcase it to best looks.

  • Tatiana Luján

Man, I really hate that dress and all its versions.

  • Tracy_Flick

I hate the trend of super-thick black eyeliner, a la SJP. It seems to make most ladies look like they have tiny, close-together eyes.

  • ashtangajunkie

Something about that dress looks very 80s prom to me.

  • Paula Pertile

Its a fancy trashbag. Love her though. And I need more coffee too.

  • Therese Bohn

The neckline and draping are totally 80’s -awful.

  • Qitkat

I’ll bet that makes a great crumb-catcher. She probably ended the evening shaking popcorn bits onto the carpet as she removed the dress.

  • YoungSally

It’s like the skin for her top half doesn’t match her legs at all.

  • VicD

    Sad, angry trashbag.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I liked the way she looked in Down With Love…brunetteness and 60s clothes look good on her!

  • d4divine

    Omg…the V shaped grin…the wide stance…oh yeah…she looks a ghostly mess

  • ThaliaMenninger

She looks like she’s wearing garbage bags.

  • MiriamMc75

She needs to not be blonde Right Now. Also – bangs. Immediately.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

It makes her boobs look droopy.

  • Westwood is not meant for everybody.
