Rita Ora in Donna Karan Atelier at the 2013 Angel Ball

Posted on October 30, 2013

This is easily one of the best looks we’ve ever seen her in. The hair and makeup alone are leagues ahead of what she’s done in the past.

Rita Ora attends the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation Hosts 2013 Angel Ball in New York City in a Donna Karan Atelier silver
bugle bead embroidered gown.

The dress is gorgeous; mega-glam with just the slightest tip to each end of the style spectrum: princess at the hem and edgy at the neck. Perfect for her. Except for the color, which pretty much blends with her hair and skin tone to turn her into a glittering ghost with drag makeup. If the dress was more  of a bronze and less of a white-gold, we think this would easily have been a WERQ. It just needs to be several shades darker for her.  Also – and this is a novel complaint, coming from us – that’s just a bit too much jewelry, bordering on obnoxious.

Still; love the style of the dress and what she did to her head.

And I couldn’t get beyond the Mummy Bride look to notice hair/make-up… It all blends too much for my liking.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I just wish she wasn’t standing in front of something white.

    • filmcricket

The dress is gorge, but it looks too long on her. At the bottom, anyway; I admit the torso fits great. And her hair looks utterly fried to me.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

She looks clean, well conditioned, and polished. The heavy handed jewelry is appropriate for an R&B artist. Really, nothing other than lovely. (I still have zero desire to learn anything about her music. I just don’t have room in my life for another Rhianna, and if that’s not what she is, she should present herself differently.)

      • Evan

Jay-Z is trying to make her the British Rihanna, but her music isn’t that good, so you’re not missing anything. She comes off as a poor man’s Rihanna. She needs to find her own identity. Besides, she’s really only been successful in Britain and Australia, so I don’t know why she’s featured so much and gets so much attention from the media.

      • jackiexx

She actually has a really lovely soulful live voice if you hear her more stripped down, acoustic work. I think its just masked by the overproduced Rihanna-derivative stuff she keeps putting out, which is a shame.

    • ashtangajunkie

Her makeup is gorgeous, but my eyes keep drifting to the bright pink nails. Not my favourite with such a glamorous look.

    • marlie

I think this is fabulous. I love the dress, full stop. I think the color looks really good on her. AND, she was wise enough to know that the bold lip color was the way to go with an otherwise monochromatic look.

    • cocohall

She’s pretty. The dress is pretty. Those two pretties not working together. Is she one of those wee tiny girls? This dress seems to want to live on someone north of 5’10” But I can see how she fell in love with it and decided to give it go. SPARKLES. SHINY. SWISHY WHEN YOU WALK!

    • Jessica Freeman

The dress most of the work here…I think from the neck up she’s too washed out…

    • Vtg Fashion Library

She does look gorgeous, but I think the hair would be better with a slightly off center part. The center part just isn’t flattering.

    • Lori

She does look so much better than usual for her. I can never remember why we’re supposed to care though. Someone is clearly working very hard to make her happen and for the life of me I can’t figure out why.

      • marlie

She’s way bigger in the UK than she is here.

    • luluransom

Yes there are quibbles, but man, that is a BEAUTIFUL dress.

    • tereliz

Except for the rings I think she looks fabulous! They’re just a little too too. Her head looks amazing.

      • sagecreek

Yeah, take a look at those rings in the third pic from the bottom. Reminded me that I have a chicken to defrost.

      • kimmeister

It would be painful for her to receive a handshake, and for the person giving her a handshake. Yeowch!

    • Julie

Very happy-Mr.-president Marilyn. I say WERQ.

    • alyce1213

This is a great Carole Lombard dress, but she really does look washed out, as opposed to light and ethereal. Also, sleek hair would have worked.

    • sagecreek

      Gorgeous!

    • Tatiana Luján

From what I see on my screen, that color suits her better than bronze would.
I don’t really see what is so amazing about this makeup that she hasn’t shown before.
Her boobs need better support, they seem to be dragged down by the weight of the dress.

      • Tashina Savage

Totally agree about the support issue. Her chest area looks so dumpy and makes her look bigger than what she is, imo.

    • Cheryl

Love it all, glittering ghost is fantastic look for a musician. I even like the over the top jewellery. My only quibble are those pink nails. Would have liked to seen a deep burgundy or even dark navy.

    • formerlyAnon

I do like her. I think I liked her hair better last we saw it, didn’t look quite as dry (but who knows, coulda been a wig), but that’s a quibble.

    • MarieLD

I would like to see her as a brunette. The hair is just a bit off for me. Not the right shade of blonde.

    • SugarSnap108

Hmmm. I’ll go against the tide and say I don’t like this at all. Don’t like the center-parted hair or the dress color on her. Plus, the nails and the…serpents? twined around almost every finger take the whole thing to tacky town for me.

    • Julie Chase

Oh, I hate the hair. Too messy and too fried.

      • MoHub

With you on the hair. One day, it will all fall out.

      • bellafigura1

I look at that hair and wonder if TLo have been snatched or had their bodies invaded or maybe they lost their glasses!

      • conniemd

I looked at the hair and thought it was a mess. I like the dress.

      • sojourneryouth

It does look better than usual, but the color is too light, she always has roots, and her hair looks really damaged. It would look significantly better if she darkened it even a few shades. I absolutely adore this dress on her, though, even if it seems a bit too long. Sartorially, this look is definitely a step in the right direction.

        • Julie Chase

Oh yeah-her face, as usual, is incredibly lovely. And the dress is great.

    • lucyloo222

For the most part, the dress is gorgeous…. except…. from some angles, it makes the girls look a little saggy and we KNOW her girls aren’t saggy yet. The color could be a little darker but otherwise, she looks lovely.

    • somebody blonde

Seriously? Her hair looks awful and the dress is making her look heavy in several of those pictures. Her makeup is nice, but the rest looks pretty bad to me.

    • quiltrx

I don’t care for her, she always looks like a tramped-out mess to me.
But that is one heck of a glamorous gown! Just wish someone else were wearing it.

    • Nancer

POW! This is how you bring some bling!

    • amanda siegelson

not that long ago, it seemed i agreed with almost everything TLO said about the outfits they review here. but lately, more often than not, that is no longer the case. take this example here. i couldn’t hate her look more. about the only thing i don’t dislike is her make-up. hair and dress is tragic. i wish i knew what TLO were smoking, because that must be some good shit!

    • Adri Wahl

She looks like the lovechild of Gwen Stephani and Rihanna. Like everything about her.

    • SewingSiren

Love. It’s a Debbie Harry / Jean Harlow mash up. Perfect for the season. Perfect for the girl.

    • Mrs. Julien

Gorgeous dress, it would have been perfect for last year’s punk-themed Met Gala.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

Can’t say I agree. The dress is not photogenic at all (although I can imagine it might look good in real), her hair is too bleached, and her eyes and brows too severe.

    • Imasewsure

Kind of an edgy Carol Lombard look which I love. Gorgeous neckline in particular

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Beautiful dress, beautiful lip color, horrible hair color.

    • CheriCPat

The dress would probably be pretty on someone taller and with supported breasts. As it is, she looks like she is playing in Mommy’s dress-up closet, with stuffed socks hung around her neck for breasts. HATE her hair, love the makeup. As for her, if not for TLo, I would have never heard of her.

    • decormaven

It’s close to WERQ worthy. A bit more support in the top would have given a better line. While the hair is an improvement, I’m still waiting for when the right combination of hair, makeup, and costuming come together. It’s going to be a stunner when it happens.

      • Sarah

I agree about the support. It’s messing up the look for me, and she could look more perky, I think. Also, the hair is just not the right color for her and she should let it go.

    • Danielle

I wish she was standing up straight, but otherwise, it’s pretty much perfection.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Her face does look quite pretty, but I can’t get behind that dead hair. Love the dress, especially the bodice.

    • Tracy_Flick

She looks like a less hard-bitten Courtney Love (circa whenever she wore that slip dress to something).

    • MilaXX

I don’t really care for this dress on her. Besides the color being wrong, the way the dress is made give the appearance that it’s either sliding off her or too big. She wearing waaaay too much blingy jewelry. I think the only thing I do like is the hair and makeup.

    • jen

      Looooove that dress.

    • Pepper Collins

That dress! I love it! Curious of what the back looks like, but I agree that it should have been a bit darker so she didn’t look like a ghost. Her hair seems a bit ’90s in my opinion.

    • prettybigkitty

      Love the snake ring(s).

    • veronkimo

Y’all like this hair!? No way. To me, this is just as bad of hair as cocker spaniel hair as you like to call it. It looks so trashy. Hate it! Also, that makeup doesn’t look all that different from the makeup she’s been donning for her past appearances. Not impressed. In fact, I’d say it looks almost ghostly in certain shots.

    • dschubba

I kind of feel like her head and her body are going to different events.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Agree that that’s too much jewelry. I had the same thought, and I rarely notice jewelry

    • NYCGlamourpuss

LOVE the dress. Love the hairCOLOR with the dress. Far less happy over the hairSTYLE and bright clown red lipstick with the dress.

    • melanie0866

I don’t know – she looks sort of … saggy. And mature. And she’s not either of those things. So I think it’s the dress’ fault.

    • Trickytrisha

About the excess of jewelry… she’s standing in front of a Lorraine Schwartz backdrop, so yeah. That dress is beyond beautiful (love those draped strands on the top), her face and makeup are stunning. I even like the hair. Actually the whole thing is pretty darned impressive, IMO – she’s a lovely young woman and here she’s hit a home run. Lose a ring or two and it would be perfection for me since I’m a fan of monochrome.

    • Janet B

Second to the plaid outfit she wore earlier in the month. Prettiest she’s looked in a dress.

    • Pterodactyl111

I think she would be a better brunette.

    • Lily-Rygh

The detailing along the neckline reminds me of Courtney Love’s coming out dress at the Oscars in whatever-the-hell-year-that-was, when she decided to be a Respectable Actress.

    • demidaemon

I HATE THE HAIR! Everything else is good, but that hair is a big ol’ no.
