Rihanna for Glamour Magazine

Posted on October 02, 2013

The girl can serve up face; there’s no doubt about that.

Rihanna covers the November 2013 issue of Glamour magazine in a Dior bodysuit photographed by Terry Tsiolis.

On the difference between Robyn and Rihanna: “When people call me Robyn, my head just flies around because I feel like that person knows me. But Rihanna, that tends to be people’s own [creation]. Robyn is who I am. Rihanna—that’s an idea of who I am.”

On her fashion inspiration: “My love for fashion—let me say, my admiration for fashion—started with my mom. I used to watch her get dressed. She was around my age right now, and she was so fly. So fly. I remember not even knowing how to do that because I was such a tomboy.”

On who’s on her best-dressed list: “Oh my God, are you kidding me? Nicole Richie. She just pisses me off, she’s so good. But you know who is the best who ever did it? Princess Diana. She was like—she killed it. Every look was right. She was gangsta with her clothes. She had these crazy hats. She got oversize jackets. I loved everything she wore.”

We are living for those curls.

She looks as delicious as she always does when professionals get a hold of her. But is anyone else a little shocked and disappointed that her style icons are Nicole Richie and Princess Diana? Nothing against either lady, but they’re both such … conventional choices at the end of the day. Can’t really see either of them reflected in Rihanna’s own style.

    I just… want to BE her…

  • oklund

This is eye candy to the extreme. She can pull off a potato sack as far as I’m concerned, but in that Chanel dress, she’s just a goddess.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Gah, she is such a looker!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

That Princess Diana movie is getting creative with advertising.

    • decormaven

Touche! My mind went there as well.

  • Danielle

She was made for these kinds of shoots. What a gorgeous gal.

  • Sarah

She looks stunning but I agree about her icons. Princess Diana was not gangsta; everyone wore that baggy shit the 80s.

  • RoseJB

    Lady Di? Really? For Rihanna?

  • JDreesen

ahhh. that makes sense. i believe it was Princess Diana who said, “life ain’t nothin’ but bitches and royalty.”

my British grandmother’s ashes are rolling over in her urn right now. like, each individual ash is taking its turn.

    • AndreaSkates

My dog is looking at me like I’m crazy because I’m laughing so hard, loudly, at this comment, and cannot stop.

      • JDreesen

(with my mind on my mummy and my mummy on my mind…)

  • RussellH88

The hair makes me think of Liz Taylor on a Caribbean vacation.

  • Latin Buddy

Does anyone remember how the press and mags talked about Diana’s fashion? I see pics now and everything seems SO frumpy.

    • alyce1213

I look back at her wedding gown and it seems ridiculous now. Back then, it was magic.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

It was a proper princess dress! My mother gave me pearls for my 18th birthday because I had expressed admiration for Diana’s necklace when I was 8… fortunately she had no say in what I wore for my wedding.

  • Tanya Wade

Nor can I (see those two as her style icons), but since she’s serving up Dorothy Dandridge realness on a silver salver, I will let it go. The hair is BEYOND.

      You nailed it,

  • alyce1213

    Early Gina Lollobrigida realness.
Robyn was a little girl in Princess Diana’s heyday, so I get it.

    • Heather

Yup, and grew up in the Commonwealth, let’s not forget. You get it shoved down your throat even more.

  • decormaven

I love how she engages the camera. This is serving it, defined.

  • MarissaLG

“But is anyone else a little shocked and disappointed that her style icons are Nicole Richie and Princess Diana? Nothing against either lady, but they’re both such … conventional choices at the end of the day. Can’t really see either of them reflected in Rihanna’s own style.”

Very interesting point. I think it might be because Rhianna’s style isn’t really her own. Like most stars, she’s surrounded by a team of stylists and consultants and I’m sure that her fashion choices are often decided without her being much involved. From comments like these, I doubt she has an extensive fashion knowledge (even though Diana was FLY, obvi) where she would be able to provide a more informed answer. I feel like stars like Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj demand a say in their personal style choices & I just don’t get that feeling from RiRi. Regardless, she looks full-on amazing in these shots. FULL. ON.

    • Susan Velazquez

Or alternatively, she might have been told by her publicist to say those things. Almost everyone says Princess Di is their style icon. She’s one of the go-to choices like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, etc.

    • Town

Nicki Minaj is a direct rip off of Lil’ Kim.

  • Miss WKS

    …because Rihanna’s “own style” is really a stylist’s style.

  • http://alexanderfranco.tumblr.com/ Donny F

The hair and the eye make up are giving me life! She should keep this look, it’s refreshing to see her chic sexy instead of the hoochie mama looks she usually favours.

  • Little_Olive

First time I unreservedly feel she is KILLING it. To think she could look this good every day… what a waste,

As per her inspiration… Rhi, Princess Di lived in a time where that was the proper fashion -she was not dressed in modern 80’s attire, she was *in* the 80s. And hats are kind of habitual in the UK.

    • alyce1213

Yes, I love this and I don’t love her usual style. As to Diana as her fashion icon (and she was THE fashion icon of the ’80s), it has to be seen in the context of her being a little girl growing up in Barbados. Diana was da bomb.

  • MilaXX

I’m getting old school Dorothy Dandridge vibes from this look. Love the curls.

    • Tanya Wade

      jinx back!

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

she’s giving me lena horne on the cover.

  • Erica_Vuitton

She changes her hair so often this look was like two styles ago. Yusef is a weavemaster! Seriously laughing at the Robyn/Rihanna comment though. “Robyn is who I am.” Riiiiiiight. Except you don’t put out you make up, clothing line, tv shows, albums etc as Robyn. At least Gaga owns the fact that she IS Lady Gaga. To be fair she didn’t say they were her style icons, they asked who was on her “best dressed list”. Also Lady Di described as gangsta love that.

    • alyce1213

A line of “Robyn” makeup, clothing, etc. simply wouldn’t sell; it’s good business to use her professional name so I don’t understand why she wouldn’t. Regarding Gaga, I’m certain we’ve read similar remarks from her regarding Steffi (whoever that is), haven’t we?

      • Erica_Vuitton

Yup and everyone laughed at how ridiculous she was for saying it. Also – new video of Rihanna’s just went up. Diamond Crop-Over bra with nipple pasties, jean thong, two strippers, one poledancer, and A LOT of twerking.

        • alyce1213

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

It makes sense though – someone calls out Robyn in the street, she thinks it’s a friend or family. They call out Rihanna, it’s a fan. Robyn is her private self.

      • Erica_Vuitton

It’s not that I don’t agree, it’s just that everyone laughs when Gaga says something similar and I’m not seeing that kind of reaction for her. I’m sure most people don’t even know her real name is Robyn Fenty and that Rihanna is a Jay-Z (read: music label) created stage name. She’s built her whole empire around being Rihanna. To say Robyn “is who I really am” and “Rihanna is an idea” seems very fake to me. At least Gaga owns the fact that she IS Lady Gaga. She doesn’t say “Stefani is who I really am”.

  • KT

She is insanely beautiful as always, but I’m sorry– THAT IS A JERRY CURL

  • aahlife

They photoshopped Rhinanna an entirely new nose on top of her rhinoplasty. They also opened up her eyes and shortened her chin. Wish they would feature a person as they really are.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

The eyes are what really speak to me, they are gorgeous.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

That cover look is a personal best.

  • Imasewsure

I wouldn’t have chosen her style icons but I kind of love that she did…. sort of cute… Great photos… love the Leslie Uggams vibe!!

  • poggi

She looks fantastic. Love the short, dark and curly hair. She is so sexy and completely covered up in the cover shot.

  • terpsichory

I LOVE those shades! That last shot is perfection!
I now want her to play Anita in a new production of West Side Story. (Preferably on screen, so I can actually see it.)

  • marlie

    Her hair looks gorgeous!

And those are a couple of weird choices for fashion icons.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Can you imagine being a stylist that dresses her? Her beauty is staggering, but she often seems oblivious to her potential. She squanders her beauty without knowing she does it. These photos are stunning. My favorite is the Chanel dress; it’s a classy version of something she might try herself.

On Nicole Richie and Princess Diana, I think her appreciation of good fashion sense shows that she may eventually come around and listen to the stylists. In other words, her choices show that she can appreciate quiet fashion without wardrobe malfunctions or attention-getting devices.

    • Mitzi_Paynor

Do you know about the show “Styled To Rock” that’s premiering on Bravo on October 25th at 8? It’s basically Project Runway produced by Rihanna where the grand prize is a spot on her styling team.

      • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

The show might be interesting. I guess it depends on what side of herself Rihanna decides to reveal. If it’s about her appearing half-naked, this could get old quickly. She’s a very articulate young woman when she’s interviewed so maybe she will create something interesting. Thanks for the info.

  • carpediva

    “Just let your Soullllll Gloooo….”

  • JauntyJohn

The phrase “the camera loves some people” is a real truth.
She is one of those people — but beyond that, there is no dead eye with her. There is absolutely a There, there.

  • RebeccaKW

    That hair. YES.

  • nannypoo

I don’t recall ever seeing Princess Diana and Nicole Ritchie in the same paragraph.

  • Randy Noak

It looks like on the cover photo they Photoshopped her right eye on in the wrong place.

  • sunflower

She looks great. Love the late 80s/early 90s vibe of the cover!

  • nancymae

Why she didn’t name DOROTHY DANDRIDGE as her fashion icon when she is so blatantly channelling DD in Carmen realness is just beyond me!

Princess Di and Nicole Richie?? How… safe.

    • gracedarling

I was just coming here to say Carmen Jones! I still covet the zebra print knickers she wears when they’re on the lam. Every costume in that movie is divine.

  • Pterodactyl111

Her hair looks gorgeous like that.

  • sekushinonyanko

She is giving me some SERIOUS Joseline Hernandez…

  • myristica_fragrans

she looks a lot like joseline from love and hip hop. i don’t know if that’s a good thing.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Given these shots, I’m surprised she didn’t go with Elizabeth Taylor, because she’s serving some Cat on a Hot Tin Roof realness.

  • judybrowni

Yes to everything but those Chanel espadrilles, which should be worn only by 14 year-olds.

  • kathrineb

    LOVE the hair!

  • hellkell

I need those Miu Miu sunglasses in my life.

  • anotherkate

I just enjoy her description of Princess Di as “gansta.” Never change, Ri-Ri. Also: she looks amazing. She just made me think (briefly): why DON’T we all wear slouchy body suits as if they were in fact a full outfit? (Don’t worry, the moment has passed. I will continue wearing pants–BEGRUDGINGLY).

  • Adrianna Grężak

She looks great. I can see why she picked Princess Diana, moreso b/c Princess Diana represents a certain kind of strength

  • Sarah Thomas

Yeah, but do you think the average Glamour reader knows who Arthur Kane is?

  • Samuel Joesph Donovan

I’m kind of in love with the idea of Rihanna playing Princess Di in some biopic.

  • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

It must be frustrating to be a woman of color with BOOM to spare, whose taste mirrors that of two bone-thin white women. None of their stuff can be her stuff and look good.

Her hair is off the chain, and her eyes look mesmerizing.

  • Crystal

I freaking love Rihanna. She’s hot, she always commits to her style choices, and she gives no fucks. None.

  • Fannie Wolston

I think of carol burnett and her signature earlobe tug, It gets weirder, I find this cover shot is a dead wringer for Goodhousekeeping magazine,

And somebody had to of spoon fed those fashion icon choices to her, what nonsense!

  • StylishDreaming

Is is just me or do the whites of her eyes look really fake on the cover?
