Red Carpet Pairs Division: Julianne Moore & Chloe Moretz in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on October 04, 2013

As much as we love the casting of these two in the Carrie remake, we have to admit, what little footage we’ve seen makes it look like the whole point to the exercise was to just re-do the original with better special effects. Still, we have every reason to believe they’ll both give awesome performances (assuming the script isn’t terrible). We doubt we’ll run out to the theater to see it, but it’ll eventually land on our must-see (on the couch) list.

Julianne Moore honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with the support of Chloe Moretz. Julianne is wearing a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with Givenchy shoes. Chloe is wearing a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes.

Gotta say, Mama wins this one hands down. Julianne’s actually gotten quite a bit better with her style this past year. We don’t know if she has a new stylist or if the one she had figured some things out, but she’s looking a lot more streamlined and less inclined to wear something clumsy or awkward. Not that long ago, she was kind of known for weird Frankendresses and clunky shoes that didn’t flatter her. Now she’s the picture of chic. How a natural redhead can work a yellow eludes us, but somehow she’s managing it. The white shoes really keep it looking modern. Our only quibble is that it’s a bit tight on her. Score: 9/10.

This is a surprising misstep from Miss Chloe, who tends to nail it more often than not. We assume she didn’t want to overshadow her co-star, but even so. You can play things down without resorting to a drab color and stiff upholstery fabric, hon. It’s a blah dress with a focus-pulling pair of shoes that don’t seem to go with it very well. Score: 6/10. Nothing’s so awful that we need to rant at her, but it’s definitely not good enough to warrant a higher score than that.

Combined Score: 7.5/10.  You get in that closet and pray over what you’ve done, Chloe.

    Julianne looks AMAHZING.

    • random_poster

She does. I gasped when I scrolled through the first three pictures of her solo.

    • bellafigura1

Absolutely delicious, I got fashion chills.

    • Fanny_Trollope

She is stunning. She is getting more stunning every year. Somewhere in an attic there is a picture of her that is getting old and ugly.

  • BrooklynBomber

She must have gotten a stylist. Not a new stylist. A stylist. Her styling is finally living up to her beauty.

ETA: And, yeah, good point about that yellow. She looks great. I’m a redhead and I never think to wear it, but colorwise, this is all 1960s daisies and buttercups fab.

    • Jessica Freeman

She does have A stylist. Not sure for how long but they were featured in one of those fancy magazines and I saw her and thought…this woman had better not have been responsible for the shittery we’ve seen on TLo. So I’m thinking she’s relatively new, and doing a fantastic job.

      • BrooklynBomber

Yeah, I just can’t imagine she paid anyone to dress her the say she used to dress. I have to believe she was doing that herself, and finally got the message that it wasn’t working.

        • Blair Sylvester

I think she has been using one of Anna Wintour’s old assistants for years (I dont know if she has gotten a new stylist or the stylist has responded to the negative critiques) I think the stylist is the first assistant in the devil wears prada

    • chylde

Something about being 50 in the land of starlets and needing to just “bring it” !!

      • BrooklynBomber

        Whatever it takes!

      • DTLAFamilies

She’s 50?!?!? She’s drinking from the same well as Tony Goldwyn.

        • Imasewsure

I think it’s the well of $$$ and privilege but whatev. Good genes didn’t hurt either!!

        • chylde

          She’s 52, in fact.

  • Jessica Freeman

I kinda feel like they should have swapped shoes. Julianne looks so refreshing these days.

    • RussellH88

She’s like a glass of strawberry lemonade.

      • Violentcello

I was going to say that lemon-cookie yellow looks fantastic on her, but I like strawberry lemonade better.

  • sagecreek

Awww, they look so cute together!

  • ChaCha_70

That yellow on her is absolutely stunning. She’s breathtakingly beautiful here. Chloe who?

  • At least Chloe’s dress covers her dirty pillows.

    • PeaceBang

Aw dammit, I just made a dirty pillows joke about Julianne’s dress! Great bitter kitten minds… sorry to repeat.

  • nannypoo

I’m going to overlook Chloe’s hideous dress because she looks so cute and animated here. No duckface.

  • GillianHolroyd

Love the color on her but if you’re going to be rolling around on the ground, wear something that doesn’t wrinkle.

    • sagecreek

Nope. We grade J-Mo on a curve, and this is light years better than her usual. Wrinkles? Who cares.

  • quiltrx

I’m SO glad that Julianne’s RC/event looks are finally a suitable frame for her unique beauty! She’s so talented and lovely–one of my favorites. Here’s hoping the ‘that’s just WEIRD’ RC days are behind her forever!

  • DTLAFamilies

I think Chloe went deliberately twee to emphasize that she’s playing Moore’s daughter.

    • random_poster

That was my thought. Wish it was better executed.

  • hughman

God I miss “Good Christian Bitches” on teevee.

    • Chaiaiai

    • VioletFem

Me too! That show as gone too soon.

  • bettyesque

High-profile proofreading fail: her name is misspelled on the framed plaque. And yet, she still beams!

    • AndreaSkates

Someone better get fired over that one! Or at least demoted to Coffee Fetcher Who Doesn’t Have To Do Word-ish Things. (It’s hard to read the cursive, but it looks like the bottom half of the plaque has her name spelled correctly. Even worse.)

  • EdithP

I hope the phrase “I can see your dirty pillows” remains in the movie.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

“You look great hun, but grab a sweater… no bare arms at Easter service.”

  • Awe. Easter goodness.

  • majorbedhead

Even Julianne Moore couldn’t get me to watch Carrie. ’cause I’m a big scaredy cat.

    • Constant Reader

      Me too!

  • Not applicable

Julianne is willing to ‘go there’ as an actress, so while she might not be as good as Piper- she will do that part justice. However… I just can’t see this girl as Carrie. They’ve remade this movie a couple of times now- and even if you had better special effects– there is just no way to replace Sissy Spacek, IMO

  • Chloe’s dress is all, “I’m keeping my baby!” Julianne is shutting it down.

  • alyce1213

As a fellow ginger, I know that Julianne looks great in this particular yellow because it’s buttery and creamy, as opposed to sharp, acid, bright yellows, which are death to redheads. She looks great — my only quibble, minor considering the improvement, is the wrinkles.
On another note, I unequivocally hate re-makes, have never seen one worth making or better than the original. I won’t be going.

    • fursa_saida

I appreciate it because as somebody who wasn’t around/sentient for the original, I never really saw any reason to watch it, and the discussion around the remake has gotten me to understand why it could be a movie I could love. So I’ll see the remake, and then probably watch the original too. Sometimes a great movie deserves to be remade with few changes–particularly if the message is still applicable–just to bring another generation into it. (I’d contrast Annie, where the themes make a lot of sense for the current moment but the historical-ness of the setting might distract from those similarities, and so I think it there’s decent reason to change it a fair amount. Carrie was recent enough that most of it can resonate unchanged, from what I understand.)

    • Iva

Is this a remake, though? Or just a movie based off of the same book?

      • alyce1213

        It’s a re-make. It’s not necessarily the exact same script, but it’s still considered a re-make.

  • Carla_Charlton

If the waist were a bit lower and the hem a bit longer on Chloe’s dress, I think it would have been more flattering.

  • MilaXX

Love Julianne’s look. Don’t mind Chloe’s dress just wish she was wearing a different shoe.

  • Judy_S

I would not care for Chloe’s pallid look if she were on her own, but I like it with her standing next to Julianne. She’s like the perfect accessory.

  • Erica_Vuitton

All I see is Mother & Daughter Easter Sunday brunch. Bleck it’s OCTOBER ladies!!!

  • Coco Cornejo

A redhead rocking yellow? It’s 98% about attitude. The both of them look like they’re having a lot of fun.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t like that yellow on her at all but she still looks great of course. Cute pictures together too

  • mjude

    love juliane

  • amaranth16

Holy eff, how PISSED must Julianne be that they spelled her name wrong?

    • Jumpingjacks

at least they got it right on the real thing.. that frame probably gets thrown in the closet

  • Denise Plank

Why are so many dresses looking like old home ec projects?

  • Katesymae

With you on Julianne, but I must disagree about Chloe. The shoes are an odd match, but that dress is beyond adorable.

    • procrastinatrice

Agreed. I think she is rocking that dress. Great hair and make up as well.

    • kimmeister

Normally I hate that awkward shape of dress, but it inexplicably works on her. Probably because she’s an embryo.

  • I hate these dresses with a waist set somewhere between empire and natural. WHO do they flatter?

  • SugarSnap108

As a pale redhead, I bow to her Julianne’s ability to pull off that color. Even in ‘buttercup’ yellow, I look like I’m awaiting a liver transplant.

  • tereliz

Love the colors on both of them, but Chloe seems too old for this dress after the shit she’s been sporting.

Saw pics of JGL at this event, too. Is his suit too long? Other than that, it’s plaid and it is FAB!

  • decormaven

    Bella, JM!

  • ThaliaMenninger

Julianne looks great. Love her. The yellow is beautiful on her.

As for Chloe… Miss Moretz playing Carrie does not compute for me. Like anyone believes Chloe Moretz as a teenage outcast. She’s the very picture of a popular high school princess.

  • sunflower

Julianne looks great, love the contrast of the yellow with her red hair!

Chloe’s dress is boring. I do think that it would be a bit more flattering if the waist hit at her natural waist. This shape is making her look a bit blocky and she already has a pretty straight frame. But, its an unobjectionable and age appropriate look.

  • Trisha26

Chloe’s wearing one of those last minute hem jobs (I said “hem” jobs) that’s not pressed correctly. I don’t know if it’s high-heels that make women pose like this, with coy bent knee, but it looks ridic. Having worn (and cureently) my share of heels I don’t think I’ve ever stood this way. Of course I don’t have a star on Hollywood Blvd either.

  • e jerry powell

I do so wish Julianne would QUIT IT with the yellow. She got lucky with this one.

  • marlie

Julianne looks great, and it’s also a good look for sitting on the ground. Chloe… Her face and hair look lovely. Her makeup is really pretty, and I’m SO glad she ditched the duckface, because she’s so pretty when she actually smiles. Her dress, however, looks like an Easter dress that she borrowed from a toddler.

  • Aurumgirl

I always thought natural redheads look their absolute best in buttery yellow. It softens the pink tones in their skin and contrasts beautifully with the red hair. Blue, green, and brown eyes can’t be anything but more beautiful when they’re set off by the colour. Green comes in second, just because it’s a natural complement (as are the jewel toned blues). Anyway, this is the best I’ve ever seen Julian Moore look and I think part of that is the beautiful colour of the dress.

  • Trickytrisha

Julianne’s hair looks much more vibrant than the last few pics I’ve seen of her, maybe because it’s an outside venue. She is looking healthy, happy, and oh so gorgeous. It was generous of her to share her spotlight with her young co-star.

I like Chloe’s look. It seems very appropriate and if anyone can pull off twee it should be a 16 year old.

  • ThesisMonkey

    is it easter in hollywood?

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Julianne – her teeth? Would her stylist have her bleach her teeth? Is this wrong to ask?

  • kathrineb

You guys are spot on when you say Julianne looks best in minimalist looks. She is so stunning she does not need all the fussy details.

  • guest2visits

Julianne looks stunning – but I think they both look very good, red shoes or no.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I’m pretty psyched for this movie. The first one had to skip a lot of the book because they didn’t have the budget for it (the destruction of Chamberlain, primarily), so I’m hoping this one, with a higher budget, can put that stuff back.

Oh, right, dresses. Fashion blog, not Stephen King blog. You guys are just crossing the beams on my fandoms. ;p

You’re right about that yellow. Seeing her pull it off is like seeing something levitate. It’s impossible, yet, there it is.

And damn, yes. Chloe’s shoes make the eyes go straight to her feet.

  • valerie747

My hubby has worked with Miss Moore. He says that she looks quite ordinary (nice) in person, but “The camera makes love to her.” Well …… that’s what he said. Just passing it along.

  • Lilithcat

Loathe Julianne’s “haircut”. Girl needs a trim. And the shoes are pretty bad, that wide ankle strap looks slutty.

The color of the dress is fab.

  • PeaceBang

Julianne looks fantastic, but that dress isn’t doing anything for her dirty pillows.

  • Diego!

Julianne is killing it!!! Girl looks stunning! Chloe looks nice, not bad, but Julianne is clearly shinning here

  • MsOlympia

Did they seriously misspell her name on her star?
