Princess Charlene of Monaco in Ralph Lauren at the 2013 Princess Grace Awards Gala

Posted on October 31, 2013

No princess should make two queens yawn as hard as we are now.

Princess Charlene of Monaco attends the 2013 Princess Grace Awards Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City in Ralph Lauren.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Nastya Kusakina

That neck ruffle is awful. Unlike a lot of people, we tend to think square-shouldered ladies look good in halter necklines, but we don’t think adding a gigantic head flower to the mix is helpful. And the whole thing just looks big, black and wrinkled from where we’re sitting.

  • Looks like a fancy trash bag.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Remind me who she is again? Is this Albert’s wife, the one everyone speculated was gonna jet outta there before the wedding?

      • Kate Andrews

        That’s the one!

        • NYCGlamourpuss

Thank you! And as soon as TLo made the mention of her shoulders, I thought, “Wait, the swimmer, right?” I thought I was partially on the right track at least.

But yes, I agree with Laura – it does look like a fancy trash bag.

      • Vtg Fashion Library

Yes — and she still has the most sad eyes…….

        • MissDelaware

I remember some story about how she tried to escape before the wedding, but was captured in the wild and roped back in. Rumors have always swirled about what a stupendously unhappy marriage it is.

    • demidaemon

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Judging by the uncomfortable look on her face, she probably knows it’s a total miss.

    • Lori

No, she pretty much always looks that way, regardless of what she’s wearing.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        She has such sad eyes.

      • tereliz

Always. Is it misery or xanax, I wonder?

        • Lori

I tend to assume misery leading to Xanax, but I don’t know her life.

  • CakesOnAPlane

    HER FACE THOUGH. Divine.

    • That’s why I kind of like the neck ruffle. It frames her lovely face and hair. The rest of the dress is kind of a snooze, so why not draw attention to the best looking part of her.

      • Sarah

I don’t hate the dress or the ruffle, but on my monitor the black was reading kind of dark evergreen, and that made me like it, esp. with her coloring. The model pic and TLo seem to indicate it’s black, so now I think yeah, it’s too funereal.

        • Stella Zawistowski

I thought it was green, too, and in that shape it looks way too much like a Christmas tree to me.

          • Sarah

Ack! Can’t unsee now! But it wasn’t green anyway. So just depressing tree…

      • NC_Meg

That’s why I don’t mind the ruffle. The first thing I noticed was her face and how gorgeous it is.

        • anneland

I also like the ruffle. I think she looks great. Also… dress looks deep green to me, which is pretty.

          • NC_Meg

Yep, that’s the color I’m seeing.

      • ballerinawithagun

I love the neck ruffle! Unfortunately, black silk looks fabulous in person but does NOT photograph well. I speak from years of experience.

  • Evan

    I like her hair.

  • Cognitive.Dissonance

I dunno … I find it quite striking. Could have used some more jewelry at the wrists or fingers, tho.

  • Mary Lauer

Amazingly, I totally disagree. I think it is a stirking dress that isn’t for everyone. I frinstance, would look like a dork in it. Gigantic head flower for sure! I think she looks soignee and striking. (So speaks the viewer who has never liked how she presents herself …)

    • Nikko Viquiera

I agree with your disagreement ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Clueless_Jock

She looks so much better than the model.

      • Mary Lauer

Perhaps because the poor model had to contend with a fur hatbox on her head?!

    • I agree – she’s gorgeous.

    • procrastinatrice

Yep, there is something awe-inspiring about this. I guess it’s because she is pulling off something most people (commoners?) can’t.

    • mlle

You win vocabulary today. Soignee is a fabulous word.

    • Qitkat

I agree wholeheartedly with you. For a dress that would seem to have so many elements that can be unattractive, neck ruffles, fabric wrinkles, a neck bow, it is gorgeous on her. She has a presence here that goes beyond the image.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Same here. I’d look like a dork too. But I’m six five, 275, and really hairy. That color would not flatter my black-gone-grey shoulder fur.

      • StellaZafella

Oooohhh, but I’d love to see you try it on…just for a minute. You’d be Charlize ‘Bear’on!!!!

        • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Now I have to clean coca-cola off my computer screen. I love you!

    • Little_Olive

Indeed, very interesting, hard-to-pull-off, statement dress -all while being black. I would have made a point of the necktie more than the collar, maybe, but sad eyes and all she is owning it. That fabric is to die.
I feel we tend to forget Ralph makes gorgeous gowns.

  • kittenwithaquip

A princess in Wicked Queen garb…foreshadowing?

  • Diana Giese

I dunno…I think this is stunning. She looks fantastic, neck ruffle and all.

    • kimmeister

She just a nice long neck to be able to pull off a neck ruffle. I think her hair looks fab. And I’ve always been a fan of the halter neckline to help underplay broad shoulders.

  • Julie Chase

The trash bag references are making me think of The Princess Bride.

“Bow to the queen of slime, the queen of filth, the queen of putrescence! Boo!”

  • Wine bottle gift bag.

  • Kate Andrews

Well, at least she doesn’t look like she’s going to run away this time. But yeah. Not so hot.

    • Kate Andrews

Oh, and the jewels are great.

      • shirab

I’m just glad to see her wearing some. Most of the time, even including as I recall at a royal wedding in Sweden, she is bauble-free. Where’s the fun in that, if you’re a princess?

        • Kate Andrews

yeah, no joke! I’d work it like Liberace if I had access to all that. I’d be raiding Princess Grace’s collection!

          • 1964edithgrove

Don’t you think her daughters got the lot?

          • Kate Andrews

There’s got to be a few bits and bobs around.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

How could anyone run away in that dress?

    • marlie

Only because the dress is too cumbersome. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

  • Julie Parr

I think she looks very modern princess-y and beautiful. I only wish I could wear that dress! The burgundy would have been nice though.

  • Nikko Viquiera

I think this is fantastic. I wish we (America) had a princess instead of some twerking, tongue wielding youngling.

    • OrigamiRose

Imagine Margo Channing’s “amen” moment. That’s my response ๐Ÿ™‚

  • In_Stitches

It’s green and you two are whiny bitches. She looks fabulous.

    • conniemd

It looks like almost like a dark teal green. Definitely not black. I think the material is fabulous and very regal. Could have been better steam pressed.

  • Shannon Beamer

    Princess Sadface strikes again.

  • MilaXX

I think she looks okay. From my understanding being a modern day royal is a bit of a tightrope walk between being young & fashion-y vs conventions. I’m not wowed by this look, but I don’t dislike it either.

  • oklund

Love this – it looks royal, edgy, and kind of like… a Baroque dessert? I think she pulls it off, and then some.

  • fringebenefit

I like it…a lot. I think she looks divine…especially for somebody being held captive.

  • mlle

I think the neck ruffle would work if the halter were slightly wider. As it is now, her collarbones are fighting the ruffle for attention and it looks a mess. The bottom half of the dress is meh.

ETA: Also I want her to wear gloves. The dress is so voluminous that her bare arms look discordant, IMO.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Right – I think deep down inside that’s the real issue I have with this. Her collarbones are fighting the ruffle, exactly. Because the ruffle DOES frame her face nicely, but there’s still something about this whole look that’s off for me, and I think that’s it. I like the ruffle but I don’t like it.

  • webslice33

    she looks really charlize theronish!

  • estella_nyc

Had she added a pair of diamond studs I could have found a way to like this, but as it is, I dislike that shade of green (in black it might have been better) and I agree, too wrinkly.

  • jilly_d

you boys might be yawning, but I’m trying to figure out who I need to sell my soul to in order to get my makeup to look like that. FACE, BITCHES

    • estella_nyc

Apparently you have to sell your soul and personality to the Prince of Monaco.

  • lobsterlen

Princess Prisoner is pulling this off … she looks lovely and sophisticated.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

“Princess Prisoner” – haaa! Love that!

  • Tatiana Lujรกn

I actually like the neck ruffle, it makes her look like a Disney evil queen.

  • Jessica Freeman

Kudos to her for stepping way out of her beige and baggy box….but this is a huge miss. The neck piece situation really ruined it.

  • Imasewsure

But how fab is it on the model with the fur hat and the gloves? Without this or an Evil Queen headpiece and makeup, it’s just not working for sure…. I’ll take those bracelets though…

  • nannypoo

If she gives you an apple don’t eat it.

  • I can’t help but feel sad for her when I see her face look like this in so many pictures. But glad to see at least she’s got enough energy to keep her arms and shoulders in very strong swimmer’s form. I love how the dress accents them. “At least I’ve still got these! “

  • crush on you

I’m not sure here. She’s got the face, hair and royal stance down for sure; truly beautiful. What I dislike is those wrinkly pieces of fabric that go up over her breasts; they make her look flat, and her sad face is not helping. Oh god, she looks in the verge of tears, ok? I’m sad now.

  • tallgirl1204

I think it is beautiful. Elegant, fierce. I know that I”m wrong, but I don’t wanna be right.

    • alyce1213

      You’re not wrong.

  • GorgeousThings

It looks big black and wrinkled on the runway, too.

  • annachronizm

    ack. Maleficent!

  • kategs

Seriously??? I think she looks utterly gorgeous. I swear sometimes we are looking at different photos.

  • JauntyJohn

I know there’s a knot there, but I think it wants a big broach of some kind centered on the collar. Some heirloom from a vault that’s worth half her country’s GNP.

  • kayleymaybe

Dead ringer for Anna Faris, no?

  • mixedupfiles

God, her eyes look so sad.

  • carrie

I think it looks dramatic and witchy and perfect for late October. Today is probably the only day of the year I would like this look. I am against TLo on this one, a rare occurrence!

  • Anathema_Device

I kind of like it. I vacillate between thinking she looks elegant and thinking she has a cupcake head in a black cupcake liner.

  • melanie0866

Respectfully disagree. I think she looks lovely. She usually looks miserable in pictures.

  • Chase

She looks like Cruella de Vil on laundry day.

  • trisker

I think she looks lovely — just wish it weren’t black.

  • Deedles

Given that she normally wears shades of beige/ivory/gold all of the dang time, I will gladly take this–even if it is a bit wonky.

  • Janet B

    She looks lovely.

  • Kent Roby

This is that rare dress that, IMO, should ONLY be worn by an actual princess, so I like it. BTW, since she’s at a Princess Grace event, would one refer to it as POM/POM party?

  • Lily

The rare case of me disagreeing with TLo completely. I LOVE the neck ruffle and the whole thing is very dramatic. It’s not…pretty. Or super fashionable. But it looks like a hell of a lot of fun to wear, which seems to be my standard of fashion on Halloween. I can totally see myself putting this dress on and pretending to be the Evil Queen from Snow White.

  • lalahartma

    I love it , too!

  • Snailstsichr

I am conspiring with friends to do a Maleficient party next February, so I love it. The fabric appears to be an evil green on my monitor.

Does she know there are directions for evil queen eye makeup on Pinterest?? (I know she wouldn’t in real life, but wouldn’t that be great!?!?)

  • WintryMix

I actually like the dress, but want totally different makeup, hair, and jewelry to punch it up.

  • OrigamiRose

:/ I kind of disagree; I think she looks fierce (in spite of how terribly sad she continues to seem).

  • Needs that fur turban. Being a princess means you can do that.

  • flamingoNW

    Really? I love it!

    • sagecreek

Me, too. We’ll just sit over here in the corner together ๐Ÿ™‚

    • CB

I love it too! So dramatic (and it looks deep green, not black, to me).

    • Lilak

      May I join y’all?

  • ashtangajunkie

She kind of reminds me of Anna Faris a bit. Something about her face. The dress appears dark forest green on my monitor. I don’t think I would mind it as much if it didn’t have the neck ruffle.

  • bizarro

    very striking. I love it.

  • At least she’s smiling a little. In her public appearances, she always looks so unhappy.

  • Diego!

    Halloween party has just started!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Oh, honey. If you are really that sad you owe it to yourself to break out of the palace and swim for it.

  • The poorly finished hems on the neck flower are pissing me off.

  • formerlyAnon

The neck ruffle seems a little too much/not enough – it should have been smaller or (my preference) a bit bolder. But I don’t dislike it. I like this dress on her (I think she wears it better than the model) and I think she’s gorgeous. Her eyes look tired, but from other photos I think that’s common with her.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I love the neck ruffle and the way it frames her face and hair, but those pleated things that come off the neck and encase her boobs are throwing the look off. The dress is too wrinkled though and that bow tie needs to go.

  • msdamselfly

the neck ruffle is about the only thing I do like

  • ojosazules

    She’s fabulous. Love it.

  • jw_ny

I like the neck ruffle, and the dress in general. Perhaps it is a size too big? idk. Wish she’d have worn the long black gloves with that diamond bracelet…it would’ve popped!

  • Tracy_Flick

I actually love the look. It reminds me of a raven in winter – slightly disheveled and maybe a bit desperate, but beautiful.

Did anybody check to see if she’s blinking out “SOMEBODY SAVE ME” in morse code?

  • Cadence Woodland

I like this. Very Disney queen villain, but in a modern and interesting way. (slinks away to avoid the wrath of the Uncles…)

  • Violentcello

It’s coming across as a beautiful dark green on my monitor. I like it.

  • crash1212

Wow. I really love this. It reads dark green on my monitor, but even if it’s black, I still love it. The fabric, the seaming, the tie detail below the neck ruffle – all, love it all. The neck ruffle looks fabulous on her and it’s the perfect hair for it. This woman has shoulders to die for and I’m betting the jewels are really hers! Nicely done Princess.

  • Synnae

it’s a very dark green on my monitor too and except for the WTF neck ruffle I think this is a great silhouette for her. So take 2-3 inches off that ruffle, ditch the bow tie and we are on the winner. If anything this dress shows halternecks should be her default dresses.

  • I like the whole look. The hair is perfect with the shoulders and ruffles.

  • marlie

Her dress reads as a dark, dark green on my screen, but that doesn’t save it from being a wrinkled mess. And with that collar, it’s almost like she’s in costume as a witch or something. Her hair and makeup are pretty, but the makeup is a little bland. And I hate that she always looks so sad/uncomfortable. I just want to give her a hug.

  • boweryboy

The whole thing is big, black, and wrinkled. Even on the model.

  • lunchcoma

Another one dressed up like a widow. In this case, it might be more wishful thinking than a lack of fashion imagination.

  • jonesybj_notreally

    want that ring.

  • alyce1213

I love the neck ruffle. She has the stature and face to pull it off. I think she looks gorgeous.

  • CeeQ

I dunno you guys, I’m kinda loving this! I also love her hair. I think she’s looking pretty great here. Yes, the wrinkles don’t help but I like that collar – it’s so dramatic!

    • ThaliaMenninger

I like it, too. At least she looks regal. And nothing like Beyonce.

  • Froggae

Well she’s not crying, so that’s a plus. But she looks like she could burst into tears any second, so that’s a wash.

  • Aaminah Khan

It’s actually a deep green, though that doesn’t seem to have translated well in photos.

I’d like it without the neck ruffle.

  • cocohall

Apparently Monacos (what do you call people from Monaco?) celebrate Halloween too! Cute costume, honey!

    • Town

      I think they’re called Monegasques.

      • cocohall

That sounds right. And kinda fancy. Thank you!

  • SorayaS

I’ve got to say I love it actually! It looks like a Disney villain dress. If I had to go the rest of my life without seeing whatever pastel drudgery Duchess Kate is wearing I wouldn’t blink an eye but to miss seeing a dress with a full neck ruffle would be a tragedy! I love the way she’s accessorised- it’s a thoroughly modern look with a Victorian twist!

  • bertkeeter

I like it…BUT….she needed to glam it up with some tasteful jewelry from the PALACE! Not a fan of the tennis bracelets! A nice ring and ears would have done the trick. LUV her hair. Also she photographs sooo much prettier with out that pastey husband in the picture!

  • unbornfawn

I wonder what it would take for this beautiful woman to bust out in a genuine smile? I hope she is happier than she photographs.

  • Gauss

I love this! I think it’s a bold, dramatic dress and it’s showing off her body. Even the neck ruffle somehow works for me, despite my general hate for ruffles…

  • GTrain

With the exception of the collar, I love it.

  • quiltrx

I actually really like it–not wild about the collar but I can live with it. This just needs a bunch of royal BLING to even things out!

  • on my screen, it looks deep forest green, which makes me love it. i’m a sucker for that color, it’s always good on us blondes.

  • jangma

I actually love it. Sure, it’s not as immaculately steamed as it could be. Is it just my screen, or is it actually a dark green? Love that color on her.

  • disqus_LQmjCZP25F

I love this gown! Totally love it. All the bias cuts; the neckline with the “just right” bow; the cut into the shoulder line – it’s gorgeous and would work in many other colors and still retain its elegance.

  • tixilyttik

I don’t mind it at all. It’s much better than seeing the gown chopped off 8 inches at the hem for some tiny actress. The issue could be that she does not quite own it. She looks uneasy.

  • stellamaris73

On the plus side, her hair, makeup, and jewels are all smashing.

  • Danielle

She’s graceful as fuck, gotta give her that.

  • Considering what Char usually wears this is FABULOUS.

  • lrhoff

Clearly I’m sitting at a different angle, because I like it and think she looks lovely. To each their own, I guess.

  • Dagney

oh meow meow…whatevs…..I think she is stunning.

  • guest2visits

I think she looks amazing, love the gown on her and the simple understated elegance of it all.

  • Shawn EH

Love the gown, but hate the hairdo. She needed a little Real Housewives juzhh I think.
