Olivia Wilde in Cushnie et Ochs at the 2013 IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards

Posted on October 30, 2013

This would appear to be the quintessential Olivia Wilde dress; so well suited to her you’d think it was custom-made.

Olivia Wilde attends the 2013 IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards Ceremony in Beverly Hills in a Cushnie et Ochs floral dress paired with a Clelia clutch, a Stephen Webster cuff, and Jimmy Choo pumps.

Cushnie et Ochs Pre Fall 2013 Collection

Sleek, chic and understated defines her wheelhouse and this dress fits the bill. And while we think a relatively admirable job of pulling the colors out of the dress through the accessories was done here, it was ultimately the wrong choice. She’s got great bone structure and eyes so striking they border on alarming, but she has the kind of coloring that calls for some color in her clothing and accessories. When it’s all as underplayed as it is here, something gets lost. We think we might accept the shoes if the clutch had some personality and color to it. We also think matching the eyeshadow wasn’t a great idea here, either. She needs color on her face to make it pop. Also, the hair’s too limp and unstyled.

Don’t get us wrong; it’s a good look for her. Ultimately, all our bitching comes down to two simple things: a little more color and a little more zhuzhing.

As her pregnancy progresses, I hope she pulls out every caftan in town. I would love to see her swanning around, swathed in fabric.
Anyway, this dress is beautiful and understated and I think she looks nice. Well put-together. I’m not blown away, but it’s very pretty.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Wait, she’s pregnant? This is how she looks pregnant?

I’m going to go home and curl up in a little ball and cry now.

      (love the dress)

Did not know she was pregnant, and would not have been able to tell from these pics. She must be very early still?

      • Mary229

I think she’s very early along. It was just announced this week.

    • filmcricket

Hmm, it looks like Disqus ate my comment. Anyway, did not know she was pregnant, and could not have told from these pics. She can’t be very far along?

      • Kimbolina

It was only just announced a few days ago (yesterday?) so she probably isn’t that far along yet.

    • Maryanne525

      Yes! And turbans! Pregnancy turbans!

    • Danielle

      Whaaaaat?! *googles*

  • Tatiana Luján

I like everything, except the hem lenght, wich isn’t very flattering.
Do you remember Trinny and Susanah saying clothes should never end on the widest part of your limbs?

    • conniemd

This dress would have been perfect at or slightly above mid knee. Would have amped up the too sedate look. But generally its fabulous on her and so well fitted.

  • Apocalipstick Now Redux

I have a complaint about the dress. It’s so flattering to her body and makes her appear even slimmer that it looks like she has a giant, enormous, creepy head. Fluffing up the hair would only make her giant head look bigger. It would be a prettier head, but I’m almost expecting her huge head to detach and float away.

  • I wonder, is this a daytime event? If so, I’d let the zhuzhing and the hair slide. She recently announced her pregnancy, so maybe she’s in the throws of 24/7 nausea and this is as good as it gets until the bumpy, glowing period. I expect her take on gestation fashion to be fun and fresh.

We could have Olivia Wilde v. Kerry Washington.

      • Emily Smith

Is Kerry pregnant or is that still speculation?

        • Jessica Freeman

Today it came out that “a source close to the couple” confirmed it.

          • Isabel

Olivia is also pregnant. Maybe with morning sickness and all that, she just wants a quiet dress.

        • Mary229

          Kerry is pregnant 🙂

        • MilaXX

It’s been announced all over the place.

      • Make it so.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

A pregnancy fashion smack-down-love it. I think these ladies will look lovely throughout.

  • sagecreek

I thought her hair looked limp and unstyled until I saw the model. Then Olivia looked absolutely Farrah-esque.

  • Jessica Freeman

I quite like it. A pop of color would have been lovely, but it works fine without it as well.

    • Sarah

If her bag was the green of the leaves, I’d be happy.

      • Yes – if you are going to pull out a colour for the accessories, why not the greens instead of the greys?

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Love the dress, but the hair makes me sad. I seem to remember Olivia having a head of hair to die for .. this, not so much.

  • ashtangajunkie

I almost never like the way her hair is styled, but she looks pretty. I like the dress – it’s a bit boring, but suits her very well. She always looks good – not “bow down” good, but “hey, I’d wear that outfit” good, which works just fine.

  • marlie

I think this outfit is great! I love the dress, and I don’t mind the shoes and clutch, though I agree that they could have been a little more exciting. Her makeup looks good, though I’m more annoyed by her non-styled hair.

    • SugarSnap108

I’m continually bothered by her limp, un-styled hair, especially in combo with clothes that are simple and chic. (OK, sometimes I like the limp hair because it demonstrates that she has a flaw – I go back and forth.)

  • formerlyAnon

She’s all sleek and lovely and just a tiny tad dull. But I like the shoes better than any other single item.

  • pepper76

She’s so gorgeous. Not loving the ombre hair on her. I think a darker color would make her look less washed out.

  • Shawn EH

Big bold bangle, I think, something pricey. And gratitude to her for losing the midriff baring version.

  • Imasewsure

Pretty but dull but that is my general view of her unfortunately.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I think it’s unfortunate that the pattern is such that there’s an arrowhead of flowers sitting right on top of her boob and then that same area is repeated in the skirt. If I tried on a dress like this, I would put it back (but that’s just me).

  • MoreShoes

Ahhh…I love this dress. I want it. It’s much better as one piece than the one on the model.

  • YoungSally

Speaking of zhuzhing did anyone else see the Queer Eye 10th reunion….remember when reality TV was funny and kind?

  • Danielle

iCovet what she did to the neckline.

  • MilaXX

I like this look. I think the makeup is a successful neutral look with out the dreaded dead lip, and the dress fits well. I would have added a pop of color in the bag. Maybe a hunter green or a greyish purple. Otherwise, I like this.

  • Judih1

are they having a heat wave in LA? That is the only (barely)) justification for wearing a sleeveless sheath in mid Octobe

    • paginatrix

October can be the warmest month of the year in California.

    • Trickytrisha

It’s definitely cooled down here in So Cal. Blanket nights and light sweater days. But yeah, October is usually still warm at least until the middle of the month, but generally pretty chilly by Halloween.

  • melanie0866

It’s a perfect summer dress. However, IT’S OCTOBER.
