Naomi Watts in Michael Kors at the “Diana” New York Screening

Posted on October 31, 2013

Just once, we’d love to write a post that says “HATE the dress, but the styling is AMAZING!” Because lately, it seems all we’re saying is the opposite. Love the dress; hate the styling choices.

Naomi Watts attends the screening of “Diana” at the SVA Theatre in New York City in a Michael Kors dress paired with a Roger Vivier bag, Harry Winston jewelry, a Charlotte Olympia shoes.

Michael Kors Spring 2014 Collection

We do like the dress. It’s an updated ’40s style and it works great for her, although it does seem to elongate her torso and minimize her bust. And we’re kind of duty-bound to sing it’s praises because she doesn’t look like she’s going to a funeral, which is how half of celebritydom left the house this past month, for some reason. It’s bold and the color looks fantastic on her. Plus she’s not afraid of jewelry, which is another pleasant change of pace.

But her makeup looks a little harsh. From more than a few feet away, she kinda stops looking like Naomi Watts. And while we can’t tell you how much we love a good blue-and-orange combo (it’s the color theme for our wedding reception, in fact) we hate that clutch. We’re trying to come around on the whole matching issue with accessories, since it’s become the trend again to do so, but we don’t like that the shoes and purse match each other so exactly. It’s actually a little distracting to us.

Sorry, I think the sternum window is kind of dumb. I get the 1940′s retro look with a mod twist, but I don’t think it works at all. As TLo pointed out, it makes her waist weirdly long, and the payoff is a peep of skin between her boobs? Nope. I can’t sign off on this look.

    • mlle

This dress is too fundamentally flirty for a sternum window. The only time they look right is on very structural dresses.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Word-I’m really not liking the sternum window. Why not just do a V-neckline?Wouldn’t that work with a 40′s style dress? I do like the print and the color.

    • Kent Roby

This dress is reminding me of another NOLA gal, Dorothy Lamour. I rather like the dress for being different, though I’m dying to put her hair up and stick some flowers in her hair!

    • AmeliaEve

I can’t stop staring at the butt crack below her boobs. I don’t even know which body part that is, but it is pretty horrible.

      • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

She has cleavage underneath instead of up top.

Otherwise I like the dress. I’d like the dress more if the print were a little smaller.

        Edit: She looks especially pretty.

        • Anita Berlanga

that sternum cleavage looks scarily like a spine – as if someone twisted her head around……

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yep. The dress is fab, and a great color choice for her, but she really needed to work a more polished hairstyle and a better lip color.

  • Jessica Freeman

Really dislike the cut out, borderline ruins the dress for me. On an positive know since Liev appears to not be there, she looks really well from the neck up, instead of the “just had sex in the limo” look.

  • 3boysful

The makeup’s outright horrific. Why is she so shiny? In the first photo, not only does she not look herself, but she looks like a well-preserved person 20 yrs older than she is, due to the harsh face.

Silver sandals in lieu of the orange platforms.

    • lexilexi

      The eyebrows. Too much pencil.

  • Ginger

It looks like she has her dress on backwards. My level of dislike for the design is off the charts. However, I’m in love with the fabric itself.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I’d love it so much more if it didn’t look like she wore it backwards and it had long sleeves.

  • bellafigura1

This is a WERQ for me. I love it (and forgive the shine).

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Wow, I really hate this entire effort. Her makeup is terrifying. The (thank you @NOLA_gal:disqus) sternum window is the opposite of sexy, her boobs are sad, and the fabric ruching is horrible. I can’t even come up with something pithy and biting, I am stunned by all the awful.

    • Kathy

The ruching is ugly for sure. The print of the fabric and slight sheen reminds me of the fabric of some patio furniture cushions I once had.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

YES! I couldn’t put my finger on it. I was picturing wicker beach house furniture.

        • Kathy

There you go. My furniture was wicker. While I liked it for upholstery, somehow it doesn’t seem right for a dress.

    • mlle

I hate that there are two kinds of ruching right next to each other. Guys, you could just have done it once!

      • Kathy

I imagine Michael Kors saying these things and I laugh my ass off.

    • SugarSnap108

The ruching really is stunningly bad. It looks like one of the flowery vines is being sucked up into the vortex of her vagina.

  • Chaiaiai

But enough about Naomi, tell us more of this wedding reception!

  • SewingSiren

    Where are Bing and Bob?

    • Janet B

      Thank you.

  • http://www.momforless.com Crystal

I don’t know how I feel about exposed sternum.

  • Nancer

The cutout in the dress is distracting and unnecessary; this is a missed opportunity because I love everything else about the dress. The fabric, the cut, the fit – love. That darn cutout is just distracting. As to the accessories, I love an orange bag, perhaps this one just isn’t the right size and shape. Still, minor quibbles, overall she looks great.

    • Mary229

I pretty much love everything about this EXCEPT the little cutout. It makes no sense for this dress.

      • Nancer

        I know! It’s a darn shame.

  • MilaXX

I agree the makeup is a bit much, but my big hate goes for the stupid cut out in an otherwise lovely gown. I don’t mind the matchy shoes & bag, but that cut out makes me stabby.

  • Nikko Viquiera

The dress is making her boobs look abnormally smaller than they actually are.

  • dustinrhodes

Every now and then, from reading all the comments, I think I must smoke crack in my sleep. I am apparently the Only Person on Earth, but: I think she looks arrestingly beautiful. From head to toe.

  • Kelly

I find myself on the opposite side of the uncles this time — I love the clutch and shoes and the way their color works with the outfit; I’m not so fond of the dress. I like updated 40s, but not so much the sternum-baring and the tucks that focus so much attention crotch-ward. (I might, um, be one of those people who *cough* doesn’t mind a little matchy-ness *cough*)

    And shiny-face again, argh!

  • bravobravp

Blue and orange wedding reception is what I took from this post :) Hope we are lucky enough to see pictures!

  • sagecreek

Why is she wearing this cute summer beach dress in October?

  • María Foulquié

Granted, the dress it’s mainly gorgeous – the print it’s beautiful and I am a sucker for anything 30′s and 40′s related – but the seaming and the draping on the stomach area makes me nervous. Not only does elongate the torso in a weird way, it’s only going to look good in someone virtually without digestive system. As a girl with round tummy tendencies, makes me look at this dress with awe and resentment.
Obviously, Naomi doesn’t have any problem with that – you can start seeing the outlining of her abs trough the sternum window. Wich it’s kind of scary.

  • jmorino08

Good god! Does her make up artist hate her or something? Why would you slather so much make up on that face? She looks like Emma Thompson in the up close shots. Emma is a beautiful woman in her own right, but she is almost 10 years older than Naomi and I have never noticed a resemblance until now.

  • kittenwithaquip

I think maybe the stylist got confused and thought they were working with Cate Blanchett or Diane Kruger. That’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

  • mmolleur

Like the dress but it screams “spring” or “resort wear.” So many celebrities dressing out of season- they must do it because designers send them clothes from what they’re currently showing.

    • boweryboy

That irks me to no end when it’s the middle of fall and stars are rocking clothes from next year’s spring/summer collections. I’m expecting some one to wear a bikini soon.

Designers should start calling their spring/summer collections fall/winter collections so at least the stars are wearing seasonally inappropriate “fall/winter” clothing.

  • Cognitive.Dissonance

A quick dusting of loose powder would have made a world of difference here.

  • Lilithcat

I like the dress, but the floral pattern and cut-out read “spring/summer”, not “late October in New York”.

  • marlie

Love the dress. I like the idea of the orange accessories, but this particular shade of orange isn’t doing it for me. And I agree that something’s off with the makeup; Naomi doesn’t look like herself at all.

  • Jackie4g

Very pink face and very dark roots. Why don’t these celebs get their roots done? It’s not pretty. The dress is very pretty, but looks out of season.

  • boweryboy

Hate the dress. The midriff makes it look likes she’s wearing a bikini and a beach wrap.

Hate the styling. Too harsh and shiny. I second that she doesn’t look like herself in some of these pictures.

Now, can we talk about hot bald daddy bear behind her?

  • bertkeeter

Like the top…not crazy about the center front gathers…but it the entire look is just such a knock off of a 1930-40′s look…Zero interpretation!

  • Amanda Welliver

    Of Kors.

  • formerlyAnon

    Love the dress.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Ehhh… I’m mostly meh on this whole look. It’s not awful or anything, by any stretch, but it’s just not setting me on fire.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

Nice fabric, shape, and length; but that keyhole is tacky, and the way the bust looks like a bikini-top is *super* tacky. The ruching down the front isn’t all that, either. Nope, this one’s not working for me.

  • Ros

The only thing that dress has going for it is that it doesn’t look like anything Diana wore.

  • webslice33

    it’s a monet…

  • Imasewsure

I like everything about the dress except for the rushing which is strange (and also not flattering). Agreed on the makeup and the accessories but appreciate the not-blackness/not-funerialness of this all

  • melanie0866

    Love without reservation.

  • lalahartma

    Yuck all around.

  • TLJezebel

Blue and orange? Are you two closet Denver Broncos fans?

    • Janet B

Hahahaha! Sadly, Broncos are always my first thought when I see Blue and Orange.

  • SugarSnap108

I LOVE blue and orange together. That’s the most positive thing I have to say.

  • ashtangajunkie

I don’t love the ruching on the torso, but I love the dress otherwise. She looks lovely, although I’m not crazy about her makeup.

  • Adella Thompson

The idea of the dress doesn’t bother me, but the proportions are off and it does her absolutely no favors.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The cutout bugs more than the matchy accessories, but only just barely.

  • Anathema_Device

I want to like the dress, but I’m not a fan of the peek-a-boo bit. It reminds me of being a kid in the ’70s and trying to be sexy by twisting the bottom part of my t-shirt and looping it through the neckline and pulling it through.

The rest of the dress is pretty great. The styling doesn’t bug me that much, but I see your point.

  • tereliz

A hundred and one pounds of fun
    That’s my little honey-bun
GET A LOAD OF HONEY-BUN TONIGHT!

  • jjjoy

this is fun! i don’t like the underboob cutout, but otherwise this look is very refreshing.

  • jw_ny

Love the color and print of the dress, but agree that it makes her torso look oddly elongated. Hate the shoes being orange, and also think her makeup is harsh, as well it and her hair style are aging. Not bugged by the clutch…love the blue and orange combo.

  • Mary229

I don’t really care for the window of flesh on her chest but God she is the prime example of aging gracefully.

  • MoreShoes

On the model the dress has an easy breezy feel to it. On her, not so much. I don’t like the cutout anyhow.

  • CeeQ

I feel like if you’re gonna do a blue and orange theme then one of them needs to be the max colour and the other the minimum colour. Does that makes sense? Because otherwise you’re coming off looking like a Chicago Bears sideline coach (…GO BEARS!) which I’m thinking is not the point? Which is a long version of saying, yes, I too, hate that clutch.
In LOVE with the dress though.

  • Diesel von Trapp

This dress is hostile to torsos.

  • quiltrx

It’s a nice enough dress (I think that cutout is difficult for ANYONE)…but it’s screaming SUMMER at me, and it’s almost November.

  • amanda lynn

    powder

  • not applicable

Is she on vacation?? Please explain this look for October!

  • Danielle

She doesn’t even look like herself in the first shot. I honestly thought it was January Jones for a hot minute.

    • demidaemon

I wasn’t sure who it was. I just knew it couldn’t be Naomi Watts.

  • Morales Mike

It’s very “Veda Pierce singing Oceana Roll in a seedy lounge.” But in a good way!

  • Shawn EH

    Killer dress.
