Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs at the 2013 FGI Night of Stars Gala

Posted on October 23, 2013

Well, she knows when to clean up her act; you’ve gotta give her that. Knowing how to dress for the venue is half the battle with style, so we can’t do anything but support this look.

And speaking of support…

Miley Cyrus attends the 30th annual Night of Stars presented by the Fashion Group International at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City in a Marc Jacobs dress accessorized with Saint Laurent sandals and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Julia Nobis

We’re just joking. Girl doesn’t need a bra with a disco-fab gown like this. It’s all working for us, even if it does come off a little shapeless from the side.

Matching the eyeshadow to the dress. It’s time to discuss this. We’ve always thought it looked pretty silly, but we have to admit, Lupita Nyong’o made believers out of us. Of course, not everyone looks like Lupita Nyong’o and in fact, Miley Cyrus is about as far away from her looks as you can get. So is it just something the Lupitas of the world can pull off, or can any gal do it? We’re asking. Because we really don’t think it’s working here.

  • ‘ATTA GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it’s just so shapeless though. The model looks fresh in this, while miley looks like someone playing dress up.

    • Mary229

I feel like maybe that’s the point though. She’s still in costume. Just a different persona.

    • judybrowni

The model looks de-pressed, at least miley’s got a smile goin’.

  • Adriana

I think a dark grey or smoky silver eye shadow would have been a better choice, and I’m not really feeling the red nail polish she’s got on. But this is a big step up from what she’s been rocking lately.

    • If I could only change one thing, it would be the polish. Red and Green will just always be too Christmas. But I like the matching shadow here and I love her hair.

      • Rhonda Shore

        me too!

      • 3boysful

        We are sour sisters.
ETA: I Meant SOUL, but we may be sour sometimes, too!

  • Diego!

I have to say she looks pretty and chic. This is the path you need to explore Miley, not the trashy whore you’ve been doing lately!

  • TrixieConQueso

The Tim Gunnesque Type Man in Last Shot Looks On Approvingly. He is thinking “Oh Honey, you are bringing back some sweet 54 memories…”

    • Darren Nesbitt

      “Tim Gunnesque” I love that!

      • Tim Gunnesque–my new favorite adjective since Nina Garcian and Heidi Klumian.

  • megohd

It’s not a bad look, but she doesn’t look terribly confident in it. She’s looking down and slouching in every picture. Is she afraid she’s going to trip, or is it just a general lack of ease? Or perhaps it’s just taking every ounce of restraint she has not to make an emoticon face.

    • NOLA_gal

I think this is her “I don’t want to make eye contact,” go-to public look. Smile, look at your feet, count on your minders to steer you in the right direction.

    • 3boysful

I thought she was laughing to herself about how we (the public) weren’t expecting THIS.

  • Sobaika

It’s largely dependant on one’s coloring and the color scheme of the outfit. Not saying it can’t work on someone like Miley but in this instance it sure isn’t.

    • kimmeister

Exactly. Elizabeth Banks looks great in orange, but I wouldn’t want to see her in orange eye shadow. Yet Lupita would probably look great in orange eye shadow matching an orange dress.

    • RebeccaKW

I think part of why it worked on Lupita is that her yellow shadow was more of a hint. Whereas MIley has green raccoon eyes.

    • Kristin McNamara

I don’t love it in this instance mostly because that color is a little too dinosaur-ey/godzilla-ey for me to take seriously once it’s on her face. As a dress, fine. But dress + eyelids is just enough emerald for me to start thinking giant lizard.

  • Danielle

Girl has lost her damn mind but can still pull off a gorgeous gown. And nary a tongue in sight!

    • Kristin McNamara

Ah, the tongue! Now that would REALLY complete the lizard image…. (see my comment above)

  • I believe in “match the outfit to the eyeshadow” – not in a costumey sense, but in an emotional sense. See what the outfit calls for and go from there. My outfit today says, “Cargo pants. I deserve this.” with traces of last night’s warpaint under my eyes. Gorgeous.

  • Mazenderan

I can’t see her tongue or her arse cheeks – so that counts as an improvement for me.

Matchy eyeshadow can be pretty hit or miss. Maybe it depends on the overall drama of the outfit? Lupita’s yellow dress was really striking, and adding eyeshadow in a similar hue just intensified the whole look. I don’t really like it on Miley here – but that’s partly because I think it looks unbalanced due to the lack of lip colour.

  • clatie

I am so grateful that her tongue is in her mouth and I can’t see the outline of her vulva that I am giving this a virtual standing ovation.

  • save_the_hobbit

Still can’t stand her, but she does look good here. I guess.

Okay, she still looks like someone you’d find in a motel. But at least she’s covered.

  • teensmom99

    I think it’s a personal best.

  • Jessica Freeman

This is defintely her dress. It’s refreshing to see her look like a lady again. I don’t think matching eye shadow to clothes is ideal, but it has it’s place. The green in that dress is so rich, the matchy eye shadow is just too much.

  • padma sallah

While I am enjoying the sparkles and general shapelessness, the make-up seems like an afterthought. It seems a little lacking on the whole. On the plus side, I am grateful that I cant see her butt.

  • MGMcD

Girl also doesn’t need a bra when she’s 20 years old and rail thin. Sigh…

  • marlie

You know what? This is pretty fabulous! The dress is perfect for her figure AND her persona, but it’s still chic and even classy. And I don’t mind the matching shadow at all.

  • Tracy Alexander

The fact that she can clean up here shows that she knows EXACTLY what she’s been doing these past few months. She’s not some clueless tweener vamp- she’s a shrewd actress that’s been in the game awhile. To a certain extent her previous controversial outfits were costumes.

    • Rhonda Shore

I’ve come to agree with that assessment. She’s been in show business a long time and knew exactly what she was doing. She’s also pretty funny in interviews: Sample patter: “Just because you go out every night doesn’t mean you’re bad. Just because you go to Church every week doesn’t mean you’re good.”

  • Ad what a glorious color. More of this please, Miley!

  • Karen Belgrad

If she stood up straight she would look SOOOOO much better, because this is a gorgeous look for her!

    • Derek_anny

I mean, you can still keep your head down without looking like your dress weighs 20 pounds around your neck.

  • filmcricket

I don’t mind the matching eye-shadow in this case, because the look is so disco-fabulous. That dress is gorge, I am such a sucker for cool blue-greens (and sparkles!). Don’t care for the hair or nail polish, but still giving this an Attagirl.

  • sagecreek

There ya go, Miley! And nary a glimpse of tongue. Thank God.

  • Dreamwr8tr

She put her tongue away! Good girl! (I’m sorry the tongue made her look like a crazed Labrador.) She’s young and tiny enough that she could get away without the cutlets. If it were anyone else, we’d be saying this is bog standard red carpet. But because it’s Miley, we’re applauding because we’re not seeing how well she waxed or her nipples or her tongue. Meh.

  • Calinda_L

I don’t think it counts as matching your dress when your dress has pretty much every color of eyeshadow in it that has ever been created (e.g., Lupita Nyong’o). With a solid color dress (e.g., Miley), though, it’s a whole different issue.

  • See, now this is cute. Remember when she first cut her hair, and she was happy to merely ape Rihanna, and not out crazy her? Good times.

  • SewingSiren

Marc Jacobs and Miley pair up nicely. The eyeshadow works in a disco fabulous/mermaid kinda way.

  • Pennymac

“Because we really don’t think it’s working here.” Really? I don’t usually like it, but for some reason I like it here. It was one of the first things I noticed. That, and also that her tongue is inside her mouth….

  • alyce1213

She found the perfect slinky disco dress for her slender little body, ‘though it’s pretty standard. This is a giant leap for her, but I have no faith that this lapse of bad taste will continue. Colored eyeshadow is a slippery slope — arty or trailer park. Lupita Nyong’o’s was arty, pulling one color out of several. This matchy green . . . nah. Maybe a different color.
Where is the Lorraine Schwartz jewelry? The stuff on her ears?

  • Lilithcat

RE: the eyeshadow – I think the difference is that in Lupita’s case, she was matching one of several colors in the dress. Here, it’s all the same.

  • MilaXX

This reminds me that Miley was one of the few to get the theme right at the Met Gala. Gotta hand it to her, she looks good. As for matching shadow to the your clothes. It’s a matter of picking the right colors. Like Miley is doing here, it’s not the exact shade of green in the dress, but a coordinating shade of green that goes with her skintone that makes it work.

    • mjude

I think she looks great. I use to try to match my eye shadow back in the day & I think it still can work.

    • Matching eyeshadow doesn’t usually work for me, but I actually like Miley’s eye shadow here because it’s more subtle than the dress’s color. Hmmm … “Miley” and “subtle.” THERE are two words I never thought I’d use in the same sentence.

      • MilaXX

That’s what I mean about finding a shade that coordinates yet works with your skintone. Otherwise you run the risk of looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey show.

  • formerlyAnon

Color her AWESOME. Good choices and thanks for reminding us of how pretty you are and how well-tended is your physique. The matching eyeshadow strikes me as a little safe and potentially a little dated(?) but not awful.

  • MamaDeb

I think her slouching is the problem. If she stood straight, the dress would look and fit better.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Is that Tim Gunn in the background smiling at her??

    • Hiptobesquare

In the last photo? Isn’t that Barry Goldwater?

    • boweryboy

No. That is not the deliciously sexy Tim Gunn.

  • jjjoy

looks like she’s going through some kind of awkward phase with that haircut of hers

  • Scott Cooper

When she cleans up, she has a definite Sharon-Stone vibe.

  • webslice33

she looks great..can’t deny she’s pretty and her facial complexion is flawless

  • lehen

I wonder how hard she had to work to not stick her tongue out at the camera

  • Kent Roby

Lord, the bar is set so very low for Miley that I will pretty much give her a WERQ anytime I don’t see any of her parts that should remain private.

  • SophieCollier

The eyeshadow matching works for me here, because it’s a good color on Mi-Cy and it’s a little bit funky, which is a good style for her.

  • Clueless_Jock

  • Jaeda Laurez

She looks good. Her tongue is in her mouth, the blonde is turned down and there are no horns in sight, her makeup looks pretty good- this is clearly a 20-year-old-tits dress, and everything is standing up where it’s supposed to. I’m not mad.

  • ashtangajunkie

Such a pretty smile! I had forgotten. I like this on her – not a huge fan of the matchy eye shadow, but she looks fabulous regardless. Yay Miley.

  • DinahR

I kind of like matching eye shadow or eyeliner to clothing… if it’s not too deliberate looking and the color of eyeshadow is complementary to the wearer.

I think Miley’s looks okay here, but it is very obviously done. It seems to be applied for viewing from afar – getting closeup to her it looks a little silly. Then again I don’t think this night or event called for a nuance of cosmetics. I think Lupita’s is a far more subtle play, and that might be why it’s getting a warmer welcome.

  • Imasewsure

I like the makeup here since it’s disco-fab with the gorgeous dress. Love the longer length and the slight looseness of the fit. Great look – and she resisted throwing on a giant monkey fur so that is also a plus

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She’s 20; she can still get away with matching the shadow to the dress. Way to shine, girl!

  • Katesymae

Colorful eyeshadow, period, unless applied in a conceptual look, is almost always questionable. It’s so hard to keep from looking clownish and dated.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

The nails are distracting, but at least she ditched the clown red lipstick.

  • Tatiana Luján

I’m against matching your eyeshadow with your clothes. Lupita is an exception to the rule, every rule has its exception.

  • Mary229

I don’t care for matching the shadow to the dress except for a rare case like this one. She’s a pop star and the matching shadow seems to fit the more “stage” or “costume” persona she might be putting on. Like she’s dressed up in a gown but she’s still..well…Miley. I think she looks good.

  • Tracy_Flick

I can’t make a call on the matchy eyeshadow, because the pics don’t show her with her eyes open – it might not be as obvious as it appears.

It will be a cold day in hell before I’ll have a bad word to say about a simple gown executed in sequins and rich color.

  • steeg of their own

I feel like Marc Jacobs mailed her a box that said: “You are presenting an award to me. Wear this. And so help me god, if you try any crazy makeup, or do the tongue thing, or accessorize this dress with ANYTHING I will stab you with a stiletto after the show. You just see if I don’t. PS: Wash your hair.”

  • boweryboy

I think I like the runway length more, but there’s no denying she looks great. And saying that has left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Get me a tongue scraper. Stat!

  • snarkykitten

Do this, Miley. all the fucking time.

  • KinoEye

I can’t see her tongue. At all. For that alone, I’ll mark this down as a win.

Matchy eyeshadow is a dicey proposition for most women, especially those of us who aren’t goddesses like Miss Lupita. For Miley, I would’ve gone with some variation of silver with this gown. I think it depends on the woman, the outfit and the occasion — you never know what might work until you see it all put together.

    • Miranda

I can’t see her tongue. At all. For that alone, I’ll mark this down as a win.

  • quiltrx

I think in this particular instance, the matchy eyeshadow works fine, because it just happens to really work with her coloring anyway.
I think there’s no hard-and-fast yay or nay for me on it–all depends on the lady’s coloring, and the color of the dress, and how the shadow is done.

  • Pepper Collins

YES! Way to go, Miley! I couldn’t pull off that dress (my girls are too…rowdy…), but she looks great!

  • Bernadette

Lupita matched one shade from her dress so it was less in your face. Here it’s too matchy-matchy w/out any contrasting colors.

  • mmebam

I like the shadow. It makes her eyes pop. I was immediately drawn to her face.

  • Cheryl

This should be encouraged, despite the bad posture and nail polish. The colour is gorgeous, and I do like her makeup here. The soft beigey pink is pretty on her.

  • calimon

Phew! I literally had to exhale.

I’m convinced she must be reading TLo’s so recommendations, when they said that the only way she can shock us now is to dress in a more elegant, dignified, manner.

  • bellafigura1

This is a complete WERQ for me, from her eyelids to her slouch to her barely there sandals. She’s laughing all the way to the bank, in money green.

  • Constant Reader

She looks great! The only quibble I have with the makeup is that it’s too shiny — shiny dress, shiny face. But seriously, if that’s the biggest complaint I can come up with when discussing Miley, the outfit is a winner.

  • KT

Matching eyeshadow is NOT okay – and that was the first thing I noticed, too. I think Lupita’s worked because it didn’t match exactly and was a bit more of a goldish tone, which can be very flattering (and certainly was). It also helps that goldish eyeshadow is easier to wear and is usually less distracting, whereas green eyeshadow tends to read as tacky, ESPECIALLY when you are wearing a gown of the exact same color. I used to think that matching your clothes exactly to your eyeshadow was the shit when I was 14 — it just screams clueless.

  • frannyprof

    Stop fucking slouching already!!!!!!

  • BrooklynBomber

    Merry Christmas.

  • kaycem

i think lupita’s works b/c a) she’s lupita and b) she did the “match the smallest color” thing. that dark purple-grey is nowhere near the dominant color in lupita’s dress; miley on the other hand… well i think it doesn’t work b/c the look is all one color so the matching eyeshadow is overkill. i would have to do some google image search research, but i’d bet this holds true almost across the board.

  • Needs the jacket and the red nails aren’t working for me at all. On her, the matchy eyeshadow reads amateur hour. I will say this in her favor: I like the drape of the skirt.

  • D J H

When I saw “Miley Cyrus” in the header, I sighed and said “Oh Lord, more tongue.” Don’t love her clothes, but since for once she doesn’t look like a revolting idiot, I give her a graded-on-a-curve-WERQ.

  • demidaemon

It’s pretty, I’ll give her that. Unfortunately, I cannot agree on the no bra statement. PUT ON A GODDAMN BRA! YOUR BOOBS WILL THANK YOU!

  • crash1212

She looks great. I think both eyeshadow colors work…I’m a plebe, what can I say.

  • mrspotts66

    i think she looks lovely!
all even more lovely because i didn’t see a hint of tongue.

  • HorseNPonyShow

Oh thank you little baby jesus..the WHITE NAIL CLAWS are gone (for now). Granted the red isn’t much better but :whew: hurrah!

  • MzzPants

I think she looks gorgeous, and maybe even chic. Did I just say that?? The eyeshadow doesn’t bother me on her. It’s not a look for every woman. Love the color of the dress and I think there’s just enough shape for her body type. It’s not like she’s got boom-pow curves to flaunt.

  • flamingoNW

    I actually like this

  • jen

I like the matching eye shadow. Yes it matches but it’s subtle. Plus she looks so classy and pretty!!

  • Gorgeous color on her. And I like the fact that she opted for simple nails and minimal jewelry. The dress is all the sparkle she needs.

  • E. D.

The shadow isn’t working here. Too bad, it could have been a WERQ.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

VERY nice! Love the gown, love the color, and she looks amazing. Sexy yet sophisticated, and glammed out without her ridiculous looks of late. I’m okay with the eyeshadow matching the dress in this case, because the rest of her makeup is so natural looking. I don’t mind the little pop of color on the lids.

  • Viviennne

smug as can be…..good choice not to wear the accompanying jacket ….and….. what jewelry?

  • E2_Remote

This totally reminds me of Michelle Pfieffer in Scarface, minus the ‘ludes. Other than the red nails, I think it’s great.

  • Trickytrisha

Well, if she’s not all in our face with that tongue and crazy ass, then I guess it’s worthy of (faint) praise. What always annoys the hell out of me about her pics like this is that she so often has this habit of walking along looking down with that self conscious “omg everyone is looking at me and I love it” smirk.

Note to self: Quit commenting on Miley posts. No good can come of it.

  • jangma

I’m so happy to not see her tongue.

    • nannypoo

      Or her nipples.

  • nannypoo

I like the eyeshadow with the dress. Her hair looks too casual for the rest of it.

I’ll give her this one but I still can’t stand her.

  • elizonthelam

Gold eye shadow might have worked, but still as much as i love color, matchy was the way to go me things. Darker would have been to vampy and any other color would take it from the disco fab to the tacky playing with mommy’s make-up space—particularly with the pretty shapeless/oversized nature of the dress. (Which does look as it is great in my opinion)

  • Wellworn

Boys, I guess it’s time for you to get on board with the matchy match. It’s back! I’m fine with it, and if you caught me in the 80s wearing my matching spandex leggings, socks, enamel big hoop earrings, and striped big shirt ala Facts of Life girls working the Over Our Heads store, you would know why.

  • H2olovngrl

she’s young. She doesn’t need any support yet.

  • ThesisMonkey

and the award for “most improved” goes to..

  • MK03

I have no qualms about the matchy makeup. She looks fab and, most importantly, her tongue is in her mouth.

  • Fuchaforever

Her tongue is in her mouth! Alleluia!

  • It’s not flattering. The color is too intense for her. I’m guessing that the back is cut low. That would be a good thing.

  • carnush

I agree about the eye shadow. A neutral metallic would have been better. The dress is great though.

  • Pterodactyl111

Wow she looks great. I really love it. What a great color for her.

  • mom2ab

Her tongue is in her mouth, none of her secondary sex characteristics are visible I say its a win.

  • guest2visits

See….clothing can be fun and empowering when you know you look good for the right reasons. Looks perfect to me.
