Can Lady Mary handle leather?

“Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery attends the Miu Miu Spring 2014 show at Palais d’Iéna in Paris.

Why, yes. It appears she can. Quite well, in fact. Color us surprised.

Loving the beading. Not sold on the lip color.

Yeah, I wore that lip color in, oh, about 1984. It was hard to wear then, too (and my coloring is similar to hers, but w. pale blue eyes).

      • H2olovngrl

God, I hated that lip color. As a redhead it was not a color I could wear, but as a waitress, that color stuck like superglue to every wineglass, cup and coffee mug.

      • formerlyAnon

I believe it came in the Clinique bonus gifts-with-purchase in 1985 or ’86.

      • lobsterlen

Lancome fuchsia 1982. It did smell nice.

    • Jessica Freeman

If it weren’t for the beading detail at the neck this would have been pretty bad. I quite love it. No to all bright pink lips

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      Loving this whole thing. Yep.

    • lesmaha

Darker lip color and more face would make this a winner.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

Yea, if the lips were more wine or burgundy red, rather than this color, it would have been great.

      • kimmeister

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in eye shadow.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Just curious, if one didn’t want to go with the standard black heel here, what would one serve up as an option?

      • sagecreek

At least she eschewed the stankbooties.

      • Boulderista

Dark purple or a plum seems to me like it would work with the dress and her coloring, though not that lipstick.

I think this outfit needs a bracelet or a cuff and more color on the face.

      • tereliz

        Oxblood. With a plum lip.

        • another_laura

          yummmm, oxblood shoes, yummmmm

        • Boulderista

Yep – plum lip and blusher toned to match. maybe a little smoky brown eyeliner and the lack of eye shadow wouldn’t matter so much.

      • Jessica Freeman

        Something silvery/metallic. Just not chrome.

      • Leah Elzinga

what about a very dark green?

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I would like to see a snakeskin, in grey tones.

      • 3boysful

Perhaps a dupioni silk pump in gray/black stripes, or a pewter heeled sandal?

    • GillianHolroyd

Just a slight lowering of the neckline so it doesn’t look like she’s being choked?

      • NoveltyRocker

It looked a little chokey up there to me too but I wonder if it’s the high waist that’s making things look congested in that area in general? The waist seems to hit just a little too high anyway.

    • ewes_urn_aim

I wish she’d change her hair style, at least once.

      • Amanda Welliver

Me too. But pulling it back here would turn her into a Robert Palmer Girl.

        • MilaXX

you say that like it’s a bad thing.

      • MilaXX

Yeah I’m not loving the soccer mom hair with this look.

        • Gatto Nero

The unfailingly tidy bob always makes her look prim, no matter what she’s wearing.

      • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Exactly the problem here. Hair and makeup don’t go with the leather dress. You could switch her head around on lots of different pictures of her, and she always would look the same.

      • NoveltyRocker

I think there are a ton other hairstyles more flattering to her face but I’m loving how she’s committing to this one like it’s a trademark.

      • Lily-Rygh

The Connie Chung hair has really got to go…especially since she looks so pretty in an up-do.

    • Sobaika

It’s a bit off-season, but I am into the lip color.

    • Kate Andrews

I want her to do something crazy with her hair! Love this dress.

      • AnguaVonUberwald

You want her to do something jolly with her hair. There, I fixed it for you. ; )

    • bertkeeter

Love that she never puts her hands on hips in that tired, “I’m on the red carpet pose”!

    • Little_Olive

Yes on the dress (who thought beads would work… almost not though); big no on the lips.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

It’s just Lady Mary in 2013.

      • marlie

That seems to be the look that she’s settled into, and it’s been working for her over the last few weeks. Nothing terribly surprising, but it’s a look that suits her.

    • MilaXX

I like the dress and shoe, but the hair needed to change for this look. It’s too safe for a leather dress.

      • mjude

you know milaxx we both could rock that dress!

    • hughman

She looks like the most polite, well-mannered dominatrix at the club.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

“I say, would you care for another?”
“Pardon me, what is my name, bitch?”
“Lick my boot, dog. If you wouldn’t mind too terribly, that is.”

        • formerlyAnon

I mentally transposed these into a *terrible, terrible* piece of fiction I was critiquing for someone recently and started laughing out loud.

        • Heather

Fabulous. BKs should team together to write some fab DA fan fic. Would have to be better than the terrible Twilight fan fic that became 50 Shades of Grey.

        • demidaemon

Heh. This is awesome. You should totally write well-mannered BDSM fiction.

      • conniemd

What an image you put in my head. The hair and face look so proper like a school mistress at a private English school. Then I see her pulling out her crop and going to work, with that same look. Crazy scary. She’d also make a great spy for that same reason, the face and hair all primness and innocence.

    • BeeBeauNYC

I wouldn’t mind a belt on that just to show off her figure better.

    • nannypoo

I like it, but the lipstick is pretty bad and she needs some blusher. Maybe fluffier hair, too.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I like the lip color better than the dress. It looks like she bedazzled a grill cover.

    • RedRaven617

Twee leather and glitter. Who would of thunk it.

    • V No Privacy

      More like DowntoWn Fabby!

      • V No Privacy

I regret and apologize for the above comment.

    • SugarSnap108

I’ve never said this about a leather mini-dress, but I really like it! But I agree with everyone who’s said the lip color and (lack of) hair style are unfortunate.

    • Imasewsure

I like the beading but the dress looks too stiff overall. Interesting though.

    • Leah Elzinga

this with wavy hair instead of her permanently pristine bob would have been stellar.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Leather bedazzled Peter Pan collar? Love!

    • formerlyAnon

I do not love leather dresses. This is in the top 10% of leather dresses I’ve seen lately.

    • Aidan B

Love! Miu Miu really works for her, doesn’t it? Who’d have thought?

      • conniemd

She’d look great in that fab coat worn by Lena Dunham. But then who wouldn’t?

    • Nan

why does her face look off? injectables?

    • decormaven

Darker lip and it would have been divine! She still looks great, though.

    • jjtxgrrl

I don’t mind the lip color. I think that’s her “pop of color”

    • VioletFem

This brand suits her so well.

Miu Miu and Prada are to Michelle Dockery as Tadashi Shoji is to Octavia Spencer.

      • Aidan B

        Great analogy!

    • rkdgal

For once, I would love to see her in more dramatic makeup, particularly her eyes. She always looks a little “undone” to me, even though she’s quite beautiful.

    • venusvelvet

Bless her, she found a prim leather dress.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

or she’s trying to look prim in a dress that’s not.

    • HM3

The dress is too short for her…or something. The horizontal seam sits awkwardly high on her waist, making it look like it’s shrinking.
Her complexion and expressions are so dainty (or maybe just so very ENGLISH) that the leather does not seem to work on her.

    • marlie

Lady Mary looks gorge. I’m not sold on the lip color, but I don’t hate it either. A red would have been a better choice, though.

Miu Miu is certainly her brand, though.

    • Heather

I suspect that Lady Mary is quite fond of leather.

    • demidaemon

Sorry, I disagree. I pretty much hated this on sight. The seams are terrible. It looks cheap. No.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

can lady mary handle leather? no, i think not. she looks a little embarrassed.

    • Dreamwr8tr

I half expect Michelle Dockery to start lapsing into Lady Mary Dominatrix when she opens her mouth. Not sure that’s a good thing. Dita Von Tease would still win this wheelhouse though, even with prim leather. And for some reason I just noticed Michelle has an enormous forehead. She looks good and avoids the pitfalls of many ill-fitting leather dresses, so brava.

    • livesarah

This just reminded me why I don’t wear black. This makes her look ill.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I hate her hair a lot. It’s SO Lady Mary. She needs to rough it up.

    • loveisblind1

The makeup and hair in general are wrong for the dress, in my opinion. I think she looks better with a more dramatic eye look than a bold lip. And her hair needs to be styled and done up for this dress.

    • Gatto Nero

She would look smashing with much shorter hair — not necessarily all over (though her bone structure could handle that), but a la Swinton. Wish she’d take a bit of a risk there.

    • Kristobel

Does she hate eyeshadow? A smoky eye would have been perfect (albeit, on the nose).

    • MaryAtRealityTea

I rally wish this woman would discover blush
