Marisa Tomei in Mother of Pearl at the 2013 Environmental Media Awards

Posted on October 21, 2013

Marisa, we’ll be blunt. In fact, we’ll be bullet-point blunt. You’re a no-doubt busy lady and we certainly want to spread out on our fur-lined bags of money after a hard day’s bitching, so let’s get to it.

Marisa Tomei attends the 2013 Environmental Media Awards in Mother of Pearl.

Mother of Pearl Fall 2013 Collection

  • We love the top.
  • We love the pants.
  • We hate them together.
  • We detest your shoes.
  • And girl, allow us to introduce you to a hair brush and some non-frizz serum.

Carry on!

    Sweet mother of Pearl.

    • Calinda_L

      Bwah! Yes. This.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        I know, right?

  • This would have been SO good with the skirt the first model is wearing. Well, and with a different hairdo.

    • Imasewsure

How about with ANY hairdo???? Agreed on the skirt… it’s really cute

    • conniemd

There’s a reason the designer paired the pants and the top with different tops and bottoms. Believe that they usually know what they are doing. Both pieces looked good with the alternate pieces.

      • fursa_saida

The main effect of this post on me was to get me really interested in Mother of Pearl, because both of those lookbook photos are pretty damn cool. Not that I can afford any of it, I’m sure.

    • Kara Keenan

This would have been improved with any other bottom. Because the top is cute and works. Hell, even a $30 black skirt from Target would have been better than this matchy matchy ensemble.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Like Miss Demi, she’s another lady about my age who needs to have the ‘hair’ discussion with her stylist. There is a time when you just age out of too much length, lovely one.

    • BrooklynBomber

Yeah. . . I mean, I think there are some women who can really pull off having long hair forever. But many shouldn’t. I went to shoulder length a couple years ago, and it’s working pretty well. Easier to style, too.

      • Sarah

Yeah, screw length. You can have long hair until you are as old as shit, if it looks good on you. I think a lot of ladies are served a younger look with shorter hair because it rounds out the face but this idea that older ladies have to have short hair is just ridiculous. Groomed hair, yes, but short? Bullshit.

    • marlie

I don’t have a problem with the length; she just needs to use a hairbrush.

      • Introspective

maybe she wanted the windblown hair effect for a car sponsored event. but really there’s no justification for that kind of mess.

but somehow, with all the missteps here its not taking away from my undying and irrational love for her.

  • nowlo

Perfect assessment. The bee print is adorable but putting both of those pieces together just makes her look matronly.

  • jw_ny

I was so excited to see what cray cray ensemble Marisa had put together this time for us…she didn’t disappoint! Who else would wear a sleeveless pantsuit with a peplum, with bees plastered all over it!? I love it…love her…hate her shoes (although that color does kinda go.)

  • GillianHolroyd

By wearing the same color combo top and bottom, it looks like a crop top tucked into big-ass pleated mom pants. How could she not see this??

    • Imasewsure

I’m willing to guess that she doesn’t look at herself very closely…..

      • Lori

The hair would seem to back up your assumption.

    • marlie

Yeah, the top and the pants together, make her look really hippy for some reason.

  • I can’t bee-lieve this. Deep cherry heels, metallic.

  • Phyllis Craine

Just a thought but I think the bees are an environmental symbol, e.g. honey bees are dying off at high rates due to pollution.

    • tereliz

Sure. But the same statement would have been made with that top and some black skinnies instead.

  • Dagney

Jesus. How hard is this? Red shoes. An actual hairSTYLE please. Love the outfit though.

  • kcnitch

Shiny face, no jewelry, an outfit that at first glance looks like a hip-enhancing jumpsuit, and my hair after a spin class= not good.

    • Imasewsure

Yes I really don’t want to see myself on the RC (particularly Work-Out Me)… I want more from my precious celebrities!! Starting with a comb or brush

  • lobsterlen

Marisa you could have been the queen bee of the ball but you over did it. Bees on top, bees on the bottom but never bees on both.

  • filmcricket

I’m mostly salivating over the model’s bag.

  • MilaXX

    Big ball of NO.

  • demidaemon

I think she took the bee theme a little too seriously, if we are going by the hair. Gives new meaning to the phrase “bees’ nest.”

    • conniemd

At least she didn’t put her hair in a “beehive” do. Gads I remember the days of that awful style.

  • sagecreek

No no no, and by the way? No.

  • marlie

What TLo said. The shoes should be burned, and absolutely no to the top and the pants together.

  • tinyredlocks

Ditto what TLo said and adding “and let me introduce you to the concept of earrings.”

  • Kelly

Yep, that says it all, TLo.

And can we talk about this shiny-face trend? I know it must be hot on the RC, but it seems to me that more and more often lately, women on the RC sport faces that shine on like a harvest moon. What gives?

    • marlie

I agree. I’d like to give the ladystars the benefit of the doubt, but if it’s really that hot on the red carpet these days, maybe the organizers need to look into cooling systems or something.

      • J. Preposterice

the menfolk rarely seem to be shiny, and they are almost always wearing more clothing than the ladyfolk. So I’m thinking it’s not a temperature issue.

        • marlie

You do have a point. I was trying to explain it away, since the idea of “sweaty” being a makeup trend is far worse.

  • msdamselfly

    I think she looks darling

  • love the stripey shoes on the model

  • SewingSiren

    It’s the bee’s knees. Sorry I couldn’t help myself.

  • I like the pieces. The hair is a tragedy.

  • Trisha26

Those are bees. I don’t like them. Her hair is a mess, but it’s not frizzy, just not brushed.

  • quiltrx

One or the other, not both. I choose the top for you, Ms. Tomei.
The hair and face look like she’s been cleaning the bathroom. Go home and try harder.

  • boweryboy

    Mother of god. Yikes!

  • Sabin

Wow, she looks like Nina Garcia’s little sister – who tries and tries, but can’t quite match her older sib’s instincts.

  • bertkeeter

Sort of a low end version of PRADA lastr year? And yes get a brush!

  • A dash of green-based makeup to tone down that road-trip-in-summer-before-we-had-aircon look.

  • Golfkat

I think the pieces are amazing together. It’s like a fabulous jumpsuit this way, and I love it. Glad she wore it like this. Her hair is a little on the messy side though, but she seems like casual is kind of her style.

    • Glad I’m not the only one that thinks this looks cute together. I’m really big on modern printed suits.

  • Heather

I have an affinity for insects (dragonfly and moth tattoos), but I would only do the top OR the pants, not both. It kind of looks like she’s being swarmed.

On the other hand, I love me some Marisa, and glad to see she hasn’t shot up her face w/all kinds of fillers like so many women of her age (and even younger) in H-Wood.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

On the money, TLo. Separately, the top and the pants are adorable. Together? A nightmare. And the hair is rolled-out-of-bed tragic.

  • Rhonda Shore

introduce her to some lipstick too please. I didn’t even realize this was a peplum until I saw the side shots…NOT flattering. Also, prefer the cropped version of the pants.

  • Richard Banger

The top, paired with that skirt, is TOTALLY her look!

  • I love the top and pants together. Such a cute ‘suit’. A cute skinny color belt would have been ideal, though.

She could have done something with her hair. Better makeup. And, you’re right – some better looking shoes could have worked, too.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love the top and pants, and could accept them paired together if, IF, she had chosen better shoes and had her hair done after she rolled out of bed.

  • tereliz

I’m weeping for these beautiful clothes right now. Mostly because I want them in my closet, where I promise I’d treat them as the separates they deserve to be. And there are a kajillion other shoe options here, yet she went with patent silly putty pumps. AND phoned it in with the hair and makeup. WTF?

On the other hand, if you’re going to look like you’ve been camping for a week and then threw on your favorite bee-patterned togs, where else are you going to go except the Environmental media awards. She’s got the environment, and the mental. All she needed was a pair of those new Louis Vuitton Teva sandals.

  • oh honey.

  • cocohall

She and Emma Thompson should do a movie together. They seem to be cut from similar cloth – intelligent, beautiful, natural, and avid readers of Batshitcrazy-astan Vogue. Editor in Chief: HBC.

  • Well said! I have nothing to add.

  • Amanda Welliver

She won an Oscar for wearing this once.

  • CeeQ

I love her but that hair is terrible. That’s my hair in the morning after a particularly fitful night’s sleep. Come on Marisa, hire a hair gay or something and get a grip!

    • Candigirl1968

This has the look of – I hate what my stylist did, so I just slapped it back out of frustration and spite.

  • ovarB

Girl looks like she either just woke up from a nap or in dire need of one!

  • Danielle

Somewhere, John Frieda silently weeps into his frizz-ease.

  • JaCory Deon

She has this (endearing or maddening) habit of always looking like someone said, “Hey Marisa wanna go to a movie? Do the laundry when you come back.” It’s almost never polished with her…she’s not awful but always looks a bit last minute to me. It’s too bad because she’s a very attractive woman.

  • kathrineb

Personally I really like the matching set! Not liking the frizzy hair so much. The lady is rich/wealthy she can make sure her hair is not tangled

  • Michelle Gennari

  • Katrin

This is my standard work hair – up as quickly as possible, but I also wear what look like fitted pj’s to work (scrubs) and your hair has to be swooped up asap if you’re about to poke someone with a needle
