Lupita Nyong’o in Miu Miu at the “12 Years a Slave” Premiere

Posted on October 16, 2013

We honestly don’t think there’s another woman alive who could make this dress work.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the premiere of “12 Years a Slave” in Los Angeles in a Miu Miu dress paired with a Judith Leiber clutch, Christian Louboutin pumps, and Kwiat jewelry.

Miu Miu Spring 2014 Collection

And here she is, making it sing. Seriously, she looks absolutely gorgeous and she’s making that dress look gorgeous. We’re pretty sure we’d hate it on anyone else. Don’t love the shoes at all but the makeup is giving us LIFE.

Definitely one to watch on the style front. We can’t think of many actresses who would even think of trying this dress on, let alone wearing it on the red carpet.

STUNNING. I know nothing about her, but I suspect we’ll be seeing a ton of her on the awards show circuit this year. I cannot wait to see this movie.

      • berkeleygirl

Word is that she’s mind-blowing in the movie… I think she got cast fresh out of Juilliard.

        • abfidy

Yale Drama School. But seriously, she is INCREDIBLE in the movie.

        • MsAfroCAN

          Yale actually.

    • marlie

She looks amazing. The cartoon-ish dress, with the cartoon-ish makeup work perfectly together without looking silly. She also has the right features for that kind of makeup. The shoes aren’t a perfect choice, but I see where they were going with them.

    • beebee10

Agreed! Amazing look, and that makeup is, again, something that few could pull off, but looks fabulous on her and with this dress.

    • ChaCha_70

Yay! So happy that you are featuring her. She’s absolutely glorious!

    • Sara

She is so, so, SO beautiful.

    • hughman

Fabulous. That dress is so Diana Ross in “The Wiz” too.

      • RL McGruder

        ^^^THIS! Thank you! I couldn’t place it!

      • GillianHolroyd

        Nailed it.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love the dress and I love it on her, but I really dislike the Sharpie makeup (which looks good from afar).

      • marlie

I kind of love it. It looks exactly like Barbie makeup to me, and on her, it works. I can’t think of anyone else who has the features for Barbie makeup, AND who could pull it off without looking ridiculous.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

Love her. Talented and drop dead gorgeous woman with some badass sex positive attitude!

    • Clueless_Jock

      Fabulous.

    • DesertDweller79

She’s beautifu! Wow. Crazy dress and Barbie makeup, and she is making it work. Brava!

    • Meredith

      What shoes?

    • H2olovngrl

I honestly think there is not another woman alive who could make that make up work, but on her, it is gorgeous.

    • jen

That girl has a FACE! Love the whole look from top to bottom!

    • Jess Collett

I seriously thought she was barefoot for a moment. Those shoes are the exact shade of the carpet and I had to scroll back to take a second look.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Love the dress. Curious, why is she the only one? Her gorgeous skin color? Her sassy attitude? Her age (not too young enough to be juvenile, not old enough to look silly and try hard)? What makes this only her dress?

      • moppet

I don’t think she’s the *only* one who can wear this dress. But I think that her skin color (this is not a winky way of saying “she’s black!” — I mean the actual tone of her skin) and her severe but sexy hair style help ground this dress, which otherwise could look very flippy and silly.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Well sure, of course. It’s funny though, no one else has named another possible contender.

          • moppet

            Kiernan Shipka comes to mind.

    • msdamselfly

WOW She looks gorgeous–what a face!

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Impossibly beautiful–and those shoes are a great choice for the dress.

    • Anna Vasquez

If TLo had a feature called: “Better Than the Model”, this would have to be in it.

      • PastryGoddess

That so needs to happen. But I think they’ll need to be cloned first. Our uncles are BUSY!

        • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Maybe it’s time for our Uncles to expand with assistants or interns? With the upcoming book tour maybe it’s time to expand the brand.

    • Paula Pertile

Love how her make up goes with the dress. That can’t be easy to do (right).

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love the dress, shoes and bag but I would never have put those shoes and bag with that dress.

      • filmcricket

        Pretty much my exact thoughts.

    • Bexxx

She has a perfect face and perfect skin. I cannot wait to see this movie. She went to my tiny tiny tiny undergraduate school so I am automatically a fan. We also had Liev Schreiber. Attractiveness abounds. I basically walked around campus with a four-year-long ladyboner.

    • PastryGoddess

      imnotjealousimnotjealousimnotjealous

    • OpinionatedMtnGirl

When she was in Telluride for the film Fest in September she looked impeccable every time I saw her. Can’t wait to see what she wears during awards season

    • tereliz

LUV HUH! Seriously, I don’t even like this—STRAIGHT OFF THE PARIS RUNWAY—dress all that much, and should by all rights hate it with the red shoes and the purple eyeshadow, but she is making it WERQ!

    • bertkeeter

Agree… Her feet disappear on carpet in those shoes!

    • teensmom99

Wow. I mean wowee wow wow.

    • MilaXX

She is my latest girl crush. I think she is so very pretty. I do think they could have pulled any color from the dress that would have been better than the ones she is wearing but she looks so great in that dress that I am willing to overlook it.

    • stephbellard

Dressed like someone who doesn’t give a raw fuck that she’s about to lose an Oscar to Oprah. Bravo!

    • Sarah

She looks amazing, but I wish her shoes were orange like the tights on the (considerably less great looking in this dress) model.

    • Bexxx

      Gold shoes would have helped.

    • Constant Reader

Hair, makeup, dress, and her incredible natural beauty are all working here. Not in love with the shoes, but frankly, with so much gorgeous to look at, they hardly matter.

    • nannypoo

Wow, is she ever beautiful. And I love the dress on her.

    • Rand Ortega

      WOW!

    • Ashleigh

Lupita Nyong’o is a unicorn queen! Above the ankles flawless!

    • ashtangajunkie

      Insanely gorgeous.

    • neonseattle

Yeah, the shoes just disappear into the red carpet but everything else is KILLAH

    • boweryboy

She looks fabulous, but isn’t that a spring dress?

    • Trickytrisha

Her people, assuming she had stylists) had such a beautiful canvas to work with. This is a touchdown, home run, hole in one, etc. for her. Such a brilliant debut! Hope there’s much more to come.

    • Imasewsure

This would have been a SUPER WERQ if she had been brave with her shoes. Gorgeous and fun!

    • Tanya Wade

Thank you for ending the day on this note. Truly one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, and I adore the cockatoo dress! WERQ to Infinity and Beyond!!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Gosh, she’s gorgeous! Her coloring and make up is perfection.

    • vitaminC

Divine. The pictures are a kind of photographic malpractice that happens with darker-skinned folks, though–in order to get tone in the skin, they increase exposure and blow out the highlights. I’d love to see the dress AND the woman wearing it, thank you very much.

      • vitaminC

It also seems to be a very pale pink or off white in real life, unless she has a pure white variation on the runway garment.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

Love her look. She is rocking that Carebears dress!

    • LaSylphide

Oh, but she would look soooo much better with those baggy orange tights and open toe platforms, don’t you think? (Snark). Seriously, she does look great.

    • Shawn EH

      Dead serious WERQ!

    • decormaven

Cue the band music- finally, someone’s hitting it out of the park this week on the fashion front!!! Happy sigh. She is perfection.

    • Michelle Wilson

I love when women with dark skin wear bright makeup in pinks and purples. She looks so joyously young and beautiful. Perfect dress for her as well.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh yes, watch away. I love seeing pics of her. You are so absolutely right about the dress. I think I loathe it and yet she is just stunning in it. wow!

    • RuthGo

I’ve never heard of her before, I’ve never seen her before but I want to see her everywhere. She is honestly one of the most beautiful women working in Hollywood today. That face is STUNNING and I absolutely agree that that dress is amazing on her. If she had worn different shoes, this would have been a Super-WERQ.

    • Jane

How do I not know who this woman is, oh yeah I forgot I have a two year old son. But seriously this woman is the most beautiful woman I have seen. Wow she is breathtaking.

    • jw_ny

normally i’d dislike the matchy makeup to dress, but this really works well. she looks lovely and stylish, and fun.

I shudder to think if elle fanning had seen it first…

    • az67

Why is this not a WERQ?

      • anyalama

Seriously. This is one of the best looks I’ve seen on here in a while.

    • ojosazules

      Really delightful.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

What a stunning, stunning woman, she’s fabulous.

    • murt

Wow – she looks awesome – love the makeup!

    • kathrineb

Stunning. I don’t usually like makeup that is so heavy but she makes it work. So gorgeous she would make anything look good!

    • formerlyAnon

I *still* don’t like the dress, at all. But she’s stunning and somehow drags the dress along with her. The makeup works, even though it looks like a neater version of what we did with markers on dolls’ heads.

    • ewes_urn_aim

      LOVE

    • CeeRich

She looks amazing. Her skin is perfection and love the uniqueness of the dress and bold makeup.

    • carnush

LOVE it. I can’t wait to see this movie.

    • Kent Roby

Gorgeous! Now that this dress has been seen, I guess that Miss Perry is scrapping plans to wear the same dress with her hair fashioned into a bird’s nest with a giant cartoon bird perched in it, along with pink tights.

    • Aaminah Khan

HER FACE. I cannot get over how strikingly stunning her face is.

    • RussellH88

She looks amazing. The dress is perfect against her skin tone, it pops.

    • putacorkinit

      Beautifully done.

    • BPlease

She is GORGEOUS. That makeup is divine on her. I cannot believe how fantastic she looks!

    • PaperPusher2

If you look at the dress really quickly, those prints look like My Little Ponies. Anyone else? Just me? I swear it totally does to me. Which makes this even more awesome. This whole thing is stunning and she is beautiful.

    • ThesisMonkey

so beautiful. LOVE the makeup with this look.

    • ThaliaMenninger

The dress and the lip color are making me SING. How beautiful are you, Lupita?

    • http://www.rachelmmurray.com/ Rachel M. Murray

The dress, the makeup, and the smile in the last photo are all LOVE. I don’t quite understand why the orange leggings-und-legwarmers are so thick on the model, but whatever – what a lovely dress. So nice to see colours and swirls.

    • Jessica Goldstein

I’ve seen her in other amazing looks, too. This one seems to be the complete package: beauty, style, class, and talent. I can’t wait to see what else she pulls off this awards season.

    • Stubenville

She looks lovely, despite the unflattering dress. That crew necked, long sleeved, pleated disaster in a childish print.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      WOW

    • pookiesmom

OMG WERQ. This is like a WERQ on steroids. I don’t even care that I thought there were unicorns on her dress at first glance. Dayum.

    • Joey Melliza

she is WERQing it — too bad her feet look washed into the carpet

    • Crystal

      she. is. GORGEOUS.

    • Jacob Bowen

Her FACE in general is giving me life! It is STUNNING and even with just the lip it would be a WERQ for me! She could wear ANYTHING and I would just think “oh my gosh, you are beautiful”.

    • julnyes

      I like her face,

    • papillon

I feel like I should hate this dress but it really does look stunning on her. I really like her lipstick too but I had to laugh at how her shoes are practically disappearing into the carpet.

    • demidaemon

Some of her stances here look super awkward. I love the dress on her, hate the shoes, and find the make-up a bit distracting if I stare at it too long. It has a bit of eau de clown, which I can’t say I approve of. It’s nice to see some color, though.

    • Fuchaforever

      I love this!

    • Pterodactyl111

She is just beautiful. I love that lipstick.

    • kerryev

That makeup is bats and she still looks amazing. (Catching up on TLo and like everybody else, I’m bowled over by this woman.)

    • Christine Kesler

Not only does she look fabulous but she has a quick wit and lovely sense of humor. I saw her interview this morning with Kelly and Michael and she was intelligent and engaging. If she decides to take on a lighter role, I think she’d make an awesome “Storm” (X-Men) or even “Max” (Maxine Gibson from Batman Beyond) if those roles are ever available. Pay attention, Stan Lee, I think you’ve got a future superhero here!! Maybe Shanna can get a new look (would be a change from red hair/hazel eyes) and work with Black Widow again in the next Avengers movie!! But I’m sure no matter what Ms. Nyong’o decides to do next she will shine like the star she is. I wish her the best in her career.
