Lucy Liu in Roberto Cavalli at Elementary Paleyfest Panel

Posted on October 08, 2013

We actually did a little “oh!” at the sight of her, just because we’re so used to her in stark, chic, B&W looks.

Lucy Liu at Elementary Panel during the 2013 PaleyFest: Made in New York in a Roberto Cavalli dress paired with a Jimmy Choo clutch and Saint Laurent sandals.

Roberto Cavalli Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Meghan Collison (NEXT)

Crazy prints and bright colors are not what spring to mind first when we hear her name. But we like this, not least for being unexpected, but also because the colors look great on her  and it’s just got a perfectly chic October kinda feel to it. Of course nothing says “October” like a pair of naked shoes. Can this trend die soon? We can’t bear to look at any more desperately gripping ladystar toes.

Not super-crazy about the hair, but maybe we just need to get used to it. Is this the coming trend in hair, tight to the head on top but billowing out the sides and back? Kerry Washington had the same thing yesterday. We’re not hair queens. We’re really asking. Is this the way the hair wind is blowing at the moment? We suppose we should embrace anything that takes us away from the pin-straight center-part.

She looks great and the dress is amazeballs.

When I was scrolling down, that 5th picture made me do a double take since the sign behind her makes it look like she has walkers.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

      I thought the same thing!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I also thought crutches. It was a little unfortunate.

      • lundibleu

Me too. I had to scroll back up and check she didn’t have them, then figured out what it was.

  • gabbilevy

Well, not that I particularly like that hair trend, but since it’s what my hair wants to do naturally, I’d embrace it. The dress is fresh and unexpected from Lucy. I approve.

    • http://ayearofmommyhood.blogspot.com/ Tabby_abby

I’ll take it too. My hair does the same thing.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      Ditto. On both points.

    • Constant Reader

      Me too.

    • random_poster

      Same with me.

  • Little_Olive

It is entirely her that’s making the look here, because I’m not in love with the dress and I really don’t like the shoes.

On a side question, are her legs wearing foundation?

    • Jonquil

      No, she’s just flawless.

    • kimmeister

She might be – Sally Hansen has a product called Airbrushed legs, which is basically spray leg makeup. It makes the legs weirdly matte. You also have to be careful since it can rub off on your clothes and shoes. I knew a teen who was getting ready for prom and accidentally grabbed it, thinking it was hairspray, and she made a mess of her painstakingly coiffed ‘do!

      • Jessica Freeman

That shizz is a nightmare. I tried it and actually returned it, it was that bad.

      • Kent Roby

That’s a prom nightmare for sure, but it would’ve been more of a horror story if she’d grabbed Nair!

      • TrishR

HA!!! I damn near ruined a bath tub at the Philly Four Seasons trying that stuff. What a disaster!!!

    • MilaXX

Not sure if she’s wearing body makeup on her legs, but since hosiery is so often verboten on the RC, I don’t have a problem with ladies who chose to even out the coloring. In fact there some I really think could use a bit of body paint on the legs.

      • sagecreek

Oh yes. Julianne Moore springs to mind.

    • Jessica Freeman

If she is, I need to know where she got that color…any sort of self tanner is always orange-y on my pale skin.

  • thecitysleeps

I adore this so much. That dress is fucking gorgeous and I usually hate orange. Her hair seems like the hair style of choice when I was 6. It’s cute though.

  • Clueless_Jock

    Stylish but mature.

  • elemspbee

Oh indeed. She looks lovely. Like the hair; it goes with the somewhat softening move here.

  • hughman

I think the dress has this whole feathered capelet, “Mists of Avalon” vibe which is awesome. As such, the hair is perfect for that Arthurian Sorceress Air.

    • Jonquil

Exactly what I was thinking, but in far fewer words!

  • MoHub

I’d rather see her hairstyle than the other new, ubiquitous one: the short cut with pieces of hair seemingly randomly chopped at different lengths. Those look as if the cut was done with hedgetrimmers in the dark.

  • kimmeister

It’s a great dress on her, but the weight of the fabric called for more substantial shoes. Also not loving the frizzy volume of her hair on the bottom.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I love all those warm colors next to her face.

    • jtabz

Agreed. This dress is all kinds of wonderful with her coloring.

    • conniemd

It’s an amazing blend of prints and the orange/yellow? is gorgeous with her hair and color. It’s a striking dress. I don’t know about TLo’s black and white stark comment. Didn’t she wear a gorgeous billowing white flowered Carolina Herrera to the Academy Awards?

  • Meg0GayGuys6

I think she looks fantastic! I love this dress!

I’m not sold on the hair, but I’ll welcome this over the cocker spaniel hair any day.

I hate to say it, but I don’t mind the naked shoes one bit.

    • Adriana_Paula

I vastly prefer naked shoes to shooves like the models’.

  • jahphotogal

She looks great. What was Jonny wearing?

  • Janet B

I think her hairstyle is a new thing. (Or new again)

  • tereliz

OOOH, that dress. I love it. I think I would love it on anyone. Especially me. :) Love Roberto Cavalli/Just Cavalli.

Love the hair, hate the shoes. It’s like the wearable version of Reem Acra S2014 RTW hair to me. Softer, floatier, less product, but similar results.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

Yeah, it was kind of chilly in NYC last night.

  • Imasewsure

First shot I didn’t like the dress and then it grew on me a lot. Pretty and interesting. And sorry boys but those naked shoes are perfect for LA in October…. still in the 70′s and 80′s until just about Thanksgiving!

    • Imasewsure

Oops… wrong Paley location… but I still like the shoes

  • Imasewsure

Oh and I love the hair on her but thought Kerry’s was much less flattering (and flatter I guess). Anything that lets me see more of Lucy’s flawless face makes me happy!!

  • Blair Sylvester

I am so glad that Elementary doesn’t seem to have lost any of its magic , it’s just as good as it ever was

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Pattern mixing and Lucy Liu? What did I do right today to get to see this!

  • Danielle

I love the print on her.

  • Dorothy & Michael n/a

She looks great. Every time I hear her name, though, I think of one of the first times she was a guest on Letterman. Letterman said “Tonight’s guests include Lucy Liu, and coincidentally, her cousin, Doe-See-Doe!”

    • MilaXX

lol. Dave seems to have that effect on people. Every time I see Isabella Rosellini I hear Dave’s voice announcing her.

      • Dorothy & Michael n/a

        OMG ME TOO!!! ha ha

        • MilaXX

She was on blacklist last week and I said out loud to the cat, “look it’s ISABELLA ROSSELLINI!”

          • Dorothy & Michael n/a

            Trilling the R to death, I hope…

          • MilaXX

            you know it!

  • MilaXX

I like the dress on her. Not crazy about the naked shoe trend, but this is pretty close to making it work. Shoes should not require insoles to function. I think the hair may be a bit of a micro trend. LOVE the bag she chose to pair with this dress.

  • Anne At Large

It looks like the top of her dress was dipped in tigers. In the best way.

  • Britney

That dress is amazing… and I gotta say, I really love her hair, here. She looks fresh and feminine.

  • Jessica Freeman

Long sleeve dress and naked shoes make little sense….otherwise she looks fab.

  • decormaven

Shoes with a more substantial strap would have balanced out the ornamentation on the top of the dress. Other than this minor quibble, she looks good.

  • marlie

I love this look! The dress is chic and interesting, and I think her hair looks great. And I’d kill for that clutch. As for the shoes; naked shoes don’t bother me as long as they’re used correctly. This is fine here.

  • msdamselfly

    Love her hair!

  • alyce1213

She’s absolutely gorgeous in that dress. I love the color and the pattern mix, it’s really well balanced and placed. I even love her hair — very natural and casually elegant.

  • anotherkate

I really like this whole look! The hair must be another 90s throwback–at least, when I was a kid pretty much everyone was doing the “half-up” thing. As for the shoes, I have always been more or less a proponent of naked shoes, but I ESPECIALLY like these because they’re black glitter! So shiny but still dark. I’m into it.

  • GSMSF

Lucy Liu looking absolutely fantastic. Nothing new there!

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I love her. That is all.

  • 3boysful

Lots of ladystars seem to be raiding Jennifer Aniston’s shoe closet lately.

    Love the dress.

  • JasmineAM

The dress is great, but I think it needs to be fitted like it is on the model.

  • Leah Elzinga

I LOVE the contrasting tweed on that dress! killer.

  • terpsichory

I saw this earlier today and hoped you’d feature it. I think she looks absolutely stunning.

Concerning the hair: Liu has an innate chicness and maturity in hear bearing that balanced out the more ‘immature’ hair styles (including braids!) especially when paired with a fierce outfit. It totally works for me.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

It’s a half-ponytail, isn’t it? My parent’s favorite hairstyle for me when I had long hair. It’s cute.

  • Laura Renee

    PERFECTION. Including hair and feet.

  • julnyes

There was an Elementary Paley Center panel and I didn’t know about it – grarrr

Anyway – she looks lovely as usual.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

I want that dress. Now. It’s beautiful.

That kind of dress needs some Fall shoes, though. Not feeling the sandals with this dress.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

The hair is fine, can’t stand the naked shoes, and L-O-V-E the dress! Very cute, autumn-y (Autumnal? Autumn-ish? Oh, screw it!) and unexpected.

  • GillianHolroyd

Do *not* like the hair. It makes her look like a pin head. It’s also very jejeune which doesn’t go with thick herringbone.

  • teensmom99

She looks great and I need this dress.

  • TheLaurenJean

Wow, she looks gorgeous. Simply stunning.

  • boweryboy

I don’t mind the naked shoes or the deseparately gripping toes as long as the shoes fit. Her toes are a good half inch over the edge of the shoes.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

It looks like Cavalli puked all over a Ferragamo. Ick.

  • ashtangajunkie

I don’t have the words for how much I love and covet this dress. It’s a perfect fall dress. Love love love. I also love that LL’s naked shoe toe gripping manoeuver is much more subtle than everyone else’s. She’s a goddess.

  • Dan_In_NYC

She looks amazing – interesting dress, fits perfectly and she’s selling it. And those calves – wow.

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

    She is so incredibly chic.

  • kim bunchalastnames

    i LOVE that dress.

  • e jerry powell

    A faux mullet.

  • Vaniljekjeks

She looks amazing, really, but I think a black bootie would have worked so much better here.

  • Gatto Nero

Great dress, good length. Nice clutch. Hate the naked feet. Not liking the tight-then-poufy hair trend.
Her face looks fresh and pretty.

  • Jacob Bowen

That dress has two prints that should, in theory, NOT go together, but it looks SO fierce!

  • Shawn EH

It’s flattering hair for her, also a little disco-fied.
