Lucy Liu in Band of Outsiders on David Letterman

Posted on October 10, 2013

Sharp as shit:

Lucy Liu at the Ed Sullivan Theater for an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman” in New York City in a Band of Outsider dress paired with Saint Laurent sandals.

Band of Outsiders Fall 2013 Collection/Model Agnes Nabuurs

But girl, it’s October in New York. Those shoes are too naked and you’re sliding right out of them. Get yourself some peeptoes or something, hon. Your gripping toes are taking focus away from your fierce dress.

But DAMN, are you put together. Brava on that one.

It’s a great dress. I’m not crazy about the little triangles where the stripe pattern is absent but that’s a minor complaint.

She looks awesome. Bitch don’t age.

      • Sarah

Those little triangles where the pattern is absent keep her from looking like she’s got a stripey tube top on over a black sheath. ‘Tis a way to break up the pattern and remind you of her form underneath.

    • sagecreek

Hee! What kind of crazy contraption is on that poor model’s head????

And I agree with Russell. Bitch don’t age. Lucky her.

    • Celeste

I am SO over the naked shoes!! Ugh!

    • mlle

Love the pairing of the dress with the clutch. Different patterns and textures = black and white done right. It’s math.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Yes, I’m a big fan of that, too. The two patterns together are fantastic.

    • Paige @ LPD

looks better on her than the model!

      • Monabel

One reason being the skirt not riding up in the middle.

    • annabelle archer

You are Lucy Fucking Liu, yous shoes should fit perfectly. Frankly, I don’t even love the dress. The shape is perfection, but the visual interest is too minimal. Plus, I’m so tired of black and white, I think ever post today has had a woman wearing predominately black and white. That’s not a complaint on the Uncles, it is a commentary on the lack of imagination (and proper shoes) in the land of the privileged.

      • MilaXX

I don’t think they can fit any better. Between the style of shoe and the heel high, you’re gonna have monkey toes unless she buts those no slip things you put on the inside of your shoes to keep from sliding out.

        • MoHub

Her heels are snugly in the backs of the shoes and don’t show the usual slide-forward back gap we see in a lot of women in shoes with overly high heels. My guess is that she simply needed a half size larger to lose the toe overhang.

        • annabelle archer

Then her people need to get her those grippy things or whatever. Surely it can be avoided, ’cause that’s just silly and budget looking. Lucy Effin Liu! (mummy’s not mad at you dear, just the situation)

    • decormaven

I’m not usually a fan of the naked sandal, but damn if she’s not pulling them off! She is amazing.

    • International Model

I want to have a power brunch with her.

    • mmebam

I was in her arms till I got to the shoes. And I like naked shoes. I actually think these pair really well with the dress, but they aren’t fitted properly.

    • Katesymae

TLo, methinks you’re trying to make a point with the posts today about the limited fall color palette… I’m sad our celeb stylists don’t understand that fall is all about color!

    • hughman

Once I went to the take-out area in the back of Chin Chin on Sunset Blvd. and it was empty except for this woman wearing this INSANE Gaultier coat holding a pekinese puppy. I went in with my (then) Jack Russell puppy and we started talking puppy talk as one does. The guy behind the counter yelled out to me “HEY, you can’t have that puppy in here!” “SHE HAS HER PUPPY HERE!” I retorted and the woman scolded the man. “They’re just puppies. Calm down.” I got my food and was leaving and she came up to me in the parking lot. “Sorry about that. My name’s Lucy.” (I didn’t recognize her then). I still think about her coat.

And that is how babies are made. The end.

      • H2olovngrl

        Once again, hughman…charmed, I tells ya…

      • Imasewsure

Brushes with Greatness and cute doggies… now that is a story!! :)

        • hughman

          It was a great coat!

      • marlie

Seriously. I need you to be my new bestie. xo

        • Evan

I think everyone on this blog wants him to be their bestie!

          • marlie

Can we start a petition or something?

          • terpsichory

Uh oh… I smell BNBKs emerging, probably resulting in Kittenwank.

I pray that nobody got that.

      • cbt22

I think you’re one of those people who are just destined to have brushes with the great and famous. I had a schoolmate once who was like that. He was always running into people like Alan Rickman and Ewan McGregor. BUT NEVER WHEN I WAS WITH HIM. Sigh. Can we all hang out with you? You could probably charge.

        • Swiftlytiltingplanet

We could take turns. We’re (sort of) well-behaved BKs.

        • hughman

I would love nothing more than to hang with some BKs and god knows I could use the money (I now live on disability). But I think what we’d all love more than anything is to spend time with Tom and Lorenzo who are, after all, the rulers in this kingdom and who graciously allow us to enjoy ourselves. It brings me great joy however to read all the comments. :)

      • foodycatAlicia

I love this! Although I did giggle because “my (then) Jack Russell” made it sound like the puppy turned into a Doberman when he grew up…

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yup, gotta say that the shoes are the only misstep here (no pun intended!). Other than that, she looks marvelous!

    • mjude

she looks GREAT. I will ignore the shoes.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

Her toes are trying to escape!

    • Dan_In_NYC

She looks amazing, and the only thing my eye is drawn to is the Great Toe Escape of 2013. That bodice on her gives me life.

      • H2olovngrl

I dont have a problem with the sandals here. Her toes aren’t splayed like they are holding on for dear life, instead, the shoes seem to fit nicely and everything (pinky toes included!) looks to be in place . A perfect look. Although, I am curious what the weather is like in New York right now. Here in SoCal, it is Calfornia cold and rainy so the teensy sandals would be ridiculous for weather related reasons.

        • Heather

Weather in NYC is definitely chilly-grey-fall. NO ONE is wearing sandals right now.

          • H2olovngrl

Except Lucy and her frost bitten toes!

          • marlie

If I were “going out,” I might wear shoes like that on a day like yesterday (chilly but no rain, just like here in Philly).

          • mlle

I’ve seen a bunch of my demographic compatriots (mid-20s) commuting in flip flops this week and I’m SO CONFUSED. If it’s cold enough for me to debut a new coat, I shouldn’t be seeing toes.

            • RebeccaKW

People where I live wear flips flops all year. Last year, we had some snow and ice. I went to the store a day or two after the storm, it had turned that slushy consistency. I saw a woman in the parking lot in a knee length wool coat, capri pants, and flip flops. ??

          • Swiftlytiltingplanet

And here in St Paul, MN, it’s 74 and sunny. I’m going to have to effing mow my yard this weekend! I am ready for fall clothes and non-naked toes. Tights and boots! The weather is not cooperating in the least.

    • MoHub

      So close to a WERQ!

    • Miss WKS

uh oh. do I smell a new trend of black dresses with a splash of bold 60’s Batman graphics?

    • Jessy_N

She truly has been doing the black and white thing for ages, but damn, WHEN is this black and white thing going to end?

    • MilaXX

Love everything but the shoes. In fact, I’d love to have that dress in my closet.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Suddenly that dress is selling like crazy – the model’s version was NOT, but LL’s is HOT

    • H2olovngrl

Policeman in the third shot, “GODDAMN! Somedays I fuckin’ LOVE my job!”

    • Qitkat

This made an awesome sitting-down dress. Perfect for the occasion.

    • somebody blonde

Gotta say, I don’t understand TLo’s obsessive hatred of naked shoes, especially when they’re on someone like Lucy, who basically has perfect feet. It’s not like she looks like she’s gripping for dear life.

      • marlie

It’s when stylists have practically every single designer shoe in the world to chose from, and they pick same-old-same-old “naked” shoe, that exhibits zero originality or creatively on the part of the professional stylist. Sometimes the naked shoe is the perfect shoe for the look, and the only thing that would “go,” but in this case there are probably hundred of other shoes that could have worked with this dress.

This, coming from someone who likes naked shoes, and doesn’t really dislike them on LL in this case.

        • demidaemon

It’s pretty much the same concept as nude shoes. They are overused when the stylist and/or star should be thinking about completing the outfit, not trends. Sometimes the naked shoe and/or nude shoe is the right choice; oftentimes, it is just used because it is “on trend.”

    • marlie

I think she looks great! I even like the shoes – IF they were the right size. But that dress is fierce.

    • susan6

So close to being a WERQ. So close. The shoes look uncomfortable and a pop of color somewhere would be nice.

    • crash1212

Love this. She looks fab. Note: Where ever the last is for those shoes in every incarnation – could they all spontaneously combust? Seems to me none of them are engineered to actually walk in and thus should be destroyed. Thank you in advance.

    • carnush

      LOVE this. Perfect dress.

    • Lilyana_F

      Damn, she’s gorgeous!

    • Sam Smith

I luv this look! And, I luv her posture. The shoes are ok but she does appear to be sliding out of them.

    • filmcricket

I don’t mind naked shoes – I’ll take ’em any day over bear trap ones, for example – but they do have to fit perfectly, and I’d prefer to see a pedi with some colour there. Otherwise she is looking effing fierce. Well played, lady.

    • Chaiaiai

Children, please clear the boardroom. Madame CEO of FIERCE is taking a private call.

    • giddypony

She can’t complain if people stare at her tits.

    • cocohall

She has the coloring to wear and black and white and make it look dynamic and not drab or funereal. She wore a flowered, pastel princess silhouette dress to an awards show and THAT looked peculiar on her. Not that she can’t wear color, but I think she rocks the B/W. This dress on one of the Fanning girls however, would like a fashion assault. I love pale yellows and pinks, but they make me look anemic. My mother had that Color Me Beautiful book back in the day and while there is always an exception to every rule, a girl needs to understand which colors are in her wheelhouse and which ones aren’t.

The shoes are giving me foot spasms. But I bet they looked fabulous while she was sitting down next to Dave.

    • River

Agreed. And she keeps being one of those women who makes the clothes look better than they do on the models.

    • JP

I think the dress looks better on her than on the runway. But yeah, those shoes have Got To Go.

    • redhead with tattoos

Am I the only one who thinks her toes are impressively NON-grippy in that kind of shoe? Especially compared to everyone else who’s ever worn them ever?

I mean, yes, totally, get a different shoe for sure. But if she’s gonna wear ’em I think she’s doing so with expertise rarely seen.

(Psst, T.Lo: Have you started Elementary yet?? COME ON COME ON COME ONNNNNNNNN DO IIIIIIT.)

      • pookiesmom

I agree. It looks like they’re sliding out, but she’s not flexing them toes at all. I always suspected Lucy Liu had superpowers. I just didn’t expect them to be of the podiatric variety.

    • Peeve

She is my ‘jump the fence’ girlcrush. I’d love to have lunch with her–I think she’d be a hoot!

    • judybrowni

Lucy can even pull off those coat hanger shoulder blades, which just seem crazy on the model.

    • SophieCollier

Looks good head to toe. I don’t mind the naked shoes deployed here.

    • dschubba

I like the design, but the fabric seems too light.

    • martha

Those shoes are at least a size too small. That is not attractive. Other than that she is fabulous!

    • quiltrx

LOVE the dress! Hate the shoes. She looks awesome, as usual!

    • demidaemon

Don’t revoke my BK card….but I don’t love this. The way the pattern is utilized is just not working for me and truly ruins the whole look. Sorry, Lucy. I love you, but this one is not working for me.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

HATES it. Kicky ladies department store fodder.

    • marshmallowjane

I can’t help but notice that she has beautiful feet.

That bodice creates an optical illusion, because it jumps out and away from the black of the dress. Maybe up close and personal, the print doesn’t have the same effect. The dress is a nice fit. Lucy doesn’t seem to change. She is gorgeous.

    • Diego!

I love how this dress looks on her! She looks stunning and knows it! I love her shoes too. Sorry guys, it may be october but they work pretty amazingly with this dress.

    • webslice33

    • Vera

Not feeling the shoes, but she is wearing the dress to perfection, and I like the pairing of the purse with the stripes.

    • ItAin’tMe

Actually, the loafers that the model is wearing look good, I think.

    • sleah_in_norcal

glad to see her skirt is not stuffed up in her woogie like the runway model’s. the seaming in the striped portion is adding enough interest to keep this from being just another black and white dress. and miss liu is quite the lady, no? i’ve loved her since ally mcbeall.
