Lea Michele in Calvin Klein at Elle’s Women In Hollywood Celebration

Posted on October 22, 2013

Are we allowed to critique her style choices again? We promise we’ll be gentle.

Lea Michele attends Elle’s 20th Annual Women In Hollywood Celebration in Beverly Hills, California in a Calvin Klein dress paired with B Brian Atwood sandals and a Kotur clutch.

Um. We hate it. From tip to toe.

There. Was that gentle? At least we didn’t say “Of course.”

But really, we’re not loving the color on her, the bodice is just plain unflattering and unattractive, the hair doesn’t suit her, and the shoes … well, the shoes are okay. They’re actually a nice pair. We’re just kind of over the naked shoe in October, but that’s just us.

We think she’s in a tough position, style-wise. Ironically, the trend on the red carpet at the moment is to dress like you’re going to a funeral, but she needs to shy away from looking like she’s milking her mourning period and besides, she still has to do the work of being a star, which means showing up looking glam on red carpets. On the other hand, if she were to show up in her usual sternum-baring micro-mini-dresses and do the usual vamping and “l’il ol’ me” schtick she’s kind of known for, the public would probably recoil in disgust. We can sense an attempt here to remain true both to her image and to her public role as Cory Monteith’s de facto widow in the eyes of Glee fans; a massive toning down of her usual attention seeking, while still being just a little, well… attention seeking. It’s not a bad attempt, but that bodice is just so unattractive that it ruins it.

    • xmixiex

      wtf?

      • NinaBoo

She wants to have her breasts “accidentally” fall out. What did she call them? Ah, yes. Her “prizewinners”.

      • Me Again

I actually like the skirt. But the rest of the outfit — and especially the top — ruins the look completely.

        • ampg

I also like the skirt. And the hair/makeup. The top looks like it was attacked by a wild animal on the way over.

          • fursa_saida

My thoughts exactly. If this dress were just a simple strapless dress with a nice pattern I would like this a lot (though I would still want to set fire to the clutch). I really like this simpler hair and makeup for her, much better than the mermaid hair and ten pounds of eyelashes she usually goes for.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

All I can say positively is that I do like her downplayed hair and make up. That tortured bodice is awful in every respect. Bare midriff in October? Only if you’re in Rio.

      • xmixiex

right, aside from being ugly, this is such a summer dress, in every respect. yes, a lot of dressing has become non-seasonal, but this SCREAMS summer.

      • lexilexi

Yes, please. She’s got her seasons all mixed up. This is SO Spring – Summer. Nothing here flatters her. From hair to string sandal shoes.

        • Kristin McNamara

I find myself wondering if this would flatter ANYONE?! I wish we had a model photo to compare…

I mean, honestly, those “cups” look like there were just seams sown in the outline of the SHAPE of boob cups, but there’s no actual manipulation being done to the fabric to create a contour that FITS human breasts. So so awful.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Thank you for accurately describing the bodice as tortured. It looks very overworked and it doesn’t really flatter her.

        • MoHub

And it’s got cups of sorts, but the placement doesn’t match where her boobs are.

          • kimmeister

I don’t think the cup placement matches where any human’s boobs are.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

It looks like one of those dresses that only works on a runway model, or mannequin.

            • demidaemon

I’m not even sure a model could make this work. She would have to have non-existent breasts, and most models at least have the hint of breasts. That and she would have to ultra-fierce just to combat the sheer ugliness on display.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

For me this dress is just a misfire. I can’t picture it working on anyone.

        • Maya KC

Is it possible she’s wearing the top on…sideways?

      • Sally3000

I love that the bangs are swept away from her forehead. I’ve never been a fan of the bangs. I’ve wondered if maybe she had to wear bangs for Glee to look more like a teen, but I think she looks so much prettier without them.

    • Karen Belgrad

She looks like a bobblehead in an ace bandage and a beach towel.

      • Funkykatt

Yeah, I thought almost of that. The bobble head, I thought but you nailed it with the ace bandage. Bravo!

    • V No Privacy

Isn’t it kind of unseasonal? I know she’s in LA weather but still….it’s late October….

      • Rhonda Shore

It has a resort look to me and for resort, i dont hate it.

    • Eric Stott

You’re right about the hair- that style makes her head look disproportionately huge- and it accentuates her eyebrows too much. It’s lovely to see a starlet who hasn’t plucked her brows into nothingness, but they’re just sitting there like two sand bars in a beige ocean.

    • TrishR

I will say that I love, love, love that fabric. I wonder if its as soft as it appears. So lovely! Such poor use of it.

      • marlie

Yes, the fabric is very pretty. The deployment of said fabric was unfortunate.

    • Mismarker

      Ill-conceived all the way ’round.

    • Diego!

WTF? Did this take place in Miami? That is so a resort outfit! WTF Lea? Honey no, no. That hair makes you look older and that is so not your dress NOR shoes. Uuughh… wait… I don’t even like her bag! Throw this outfit and look into a garbage can dear.

    • annrr

One word-unflattering. From head to toe . She is in an awful place, this has to be rough. She should wear fall colors, make it easy and blend in to the season, or navy she would look beautiful in navy. That really is a summer dress.

    • Sobaika

If you have nothing nice to say…

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

        …you’re on the wrong website?

(I’m kidding. The UBFs are a kind bunch, not everyone has to have their claws out.)

    • Eva_baby

I am so distracted by her abdominal divot that I can’t concentrate on the out-of-season outfit and bland make up.

    • Rand Ortega

From the neck up– adorable. Very fresh & clean. Fabreze with legs. The rest– OUT.

    • jw_ny

Lea toning it down in a quasi-tube-top. XD It’s a nip slip waiting to happen.

In addition to it being an ugly and ill fitting top, the entire outfit is way out of season. (I don’t care if it’s always summery in Ca!)

    • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s… not good. And that’s all I can say – I don’t really have the heart to mock her right now.

    • Jaeda Laurez

it’s ugly and the hairstyle makes her head look huge.

    • Latin Buddy

yeah I agree with everything you guys said but can’t be a bitch to her now. As pointed out, she can’t vamp it up and can’t be somber. Then again, that’s why she pays someone to style her…they should be skilled enough to know how to strike that right balance.

      • Karen Belgrad

I’m surprised they didn’t put her in a softer look.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like it from the waist down.

    • colleenjanel

Does her stylist really hate her that much???

    • mjude

      sad little kitten

    • colleenjanel

And I still despise putty lips about as much as T& Lo hate putty shoes. Why are you trying to make your lips disappear?!?!

      • marlie

I loathe that. What person – celebrity or otherwise – wants their lips to blend into their face?

    • MoHub

      She’s ba-ack!

    • MoHub

Boris Karloff called. He wants his mummy wrappings back.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

The Widow Monteith is back in action fellas. Glad to she she’s feeling like her old self. Go get em honey.

    • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

Please let it be the camera angle that is making her appear so bobble headed in that second shot.

As for the summery dress in October, she’s in Beverly Hills, maybe it’s scorching out that way, I wouldn’t know as I sit here shivering in MD. That bodice, I can make no excuses for that hideous bodice. Though as a BK mentioned below, the fabric is lovely and it has been totally wasted here.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I like the fabric, but only if it’s draped over a private cabana on the Riviera.

    • Laura Renee

I think her make-up is very tasteful and compliments the outfit (though it’s not a great outfit) and everything TLo said.

    • crash1212

I can’t imagine anybody wearing that dress and looking cute or being comfortable. It’s just weird. I like the fabric, just wish he’d done something else with it. The shape of the skirt is really cute, but bodice and hair gotta go.

    • CT14

She just looks desperate for attention.

    • kmk05

Oh, that hairstyle is just AWFUL. Love the makeup, not sold on the dress, the shoes are okay. But the hair ruins it. That second picture is particularly unflattering.

    • RussellH88

On Naya Rivera I might not mind, but on Lea Michelle I roll my eyes.

    • Anplica Fiore

I love the fabric of this dress…for a summer day in the park or running errands. NOT for the red carpet. Sorry Lea – try again!

    • snarkalicious

I feel a little bad saying this, but this dress (besides belonging to a different season altogether) seems to cry out for a woman with more…delicate features. Having dramatic eyebrows and a strong nose and jawline myself, I feel somewhat qualified when I say that her head rather overtakes the look. Girl, you need more color and fabric to balance things out.

    • MilaXX

Ugly dress that looks like a beach cover up in October,

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

This look isn’t right. At all. From the ‘do to the dress to the shoes. An all-around no. N O.

      She looks like it’s Spring-time.

    • ashtangajunkie

This dress is TERRIBLE. The hairstyle is awful. It’s October, but she and that dress don’t appear to know it. Oy.

    • Leah Elzinga

ok. that seals it. that’s the worst nail colour EVER. What? the dirty yellow nail colour wasn’t what YOU zoomed in on?!

    • boweryboy

      Of course.

It’s also seasonally inappropriate. It’s fall. It’s the last full week of October. And she’s rocking a springtime bare midriff crinkle crepe dress with nearly-there sandals?

I would forgive the look if she was hopping a plane immediately after the photocall to head off to a tropical location.

      • marlie

And what appears to be a rattan purse. Her stylist must be confused about the season.

    • broke&fashionable

      I can’t critique – she looks sad.

      • Kimbolina

That was the first thing I noticed. And it looks like genuine sadness, not acting.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

I don’t think it’s bad. I like her clean face (and the fact that she isn’t sporting a stepford grin, for once). The skirt is cute, and CK is an unexpected brand for her. But yeah, that bodice.

    • Lori

Girl, I know time can get away from you when you’re in a bad place so I say this in the nicest possible way—it’s October. Put the skirt and the shoes away for next spring. Throw the top away. Let us never speak of the hair or nail color again.

      • tereliz

Sadly, I think they’re connected. But we can all agree that it wouldn’t be a loss to turn it into a skirt. In fact, it would be a definite improvement. And ye gods, those nails.

        • Lori

Yeah, I think the top and bottom are attached, but that attachment is so minimal that it’s an easy fix. The bottom is sort of cute and the best thing that could happen to it would be separation from that ridiculous business on the top.

      • marlie

I’m late to the site today (and therefore to the comments), but that’s *exactly* what I said.

    • Violina23

The top reminds me of the bandage-esque costume that Mila jovovich (sp) wore in “The Fifth Element” and her hair looks like she just got out of the shower…. Yikes

    • par3182

Don’t tell me what to wear,
      Just sit and wonder,
      Sure, my boyfriend’s dead
      And that’s a bummer.
      But you’re simply not allowed
      To rain on my parade!

      • MoHub

And I totally heard Streisand in my head!

        • formerlyAnon

Anybody who didn’t is culturally deprived. We will hold an intervention/movie marathon as soon as possible.

    • kittentoes

It looks like she fell through a cheap lawn chair.

    • SewingSiren

      A nod to The Mummy.

    • Shawn EH

Like the skirt, hate the shirt. Taste level issues always with this one.

    • tixilyttik

Her boobies look like they are begging to be freed! Is she known for her big boobies? I honestly don’t know.
The outfit is a Summer outfit, it’s October, even in CA it’s October. Just No to summery sandals.
She really needs to find a way to downplay the head/body proportion. The pictures look photoshopped with a big head on a small body.
T&L are so spot on…she must do a difficult and delicate balancing act right now. I think she may have pulled that off, but like they said the bodice is so bad, it’s just not getting pastable.

      • save_the_hobbit

She THINKS she’s known for her boobs, which is strange because she doesn’t really have any.

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

The makeup and hair do absolutely nothing for her. Hate the dress.

    • steeg of their own

Wow. That is one UGLY dress. Her hair gays need to be fired for shellacking her head, and her manicurist needs to checked for colorblindness. He confused ‘neutral pink’ with ‘dingy wallpaper taupe’.

    • cocohall

She has lost quite a bit of weight (very understandable) since Cory Monteith’s death and this look needs a bit more curves to work. She looks like a little girl playing dress up in her older sister’s clothes. Celebrities tend to have larger heads proportionately to their bodies. When you are this thin, though, the bobblehead effect, takes over, in a cruel fashion. I cannot criticize her – if I were in her shoes I’d be in sweats, unshowered and prone on the couch. It takes tremendous strength to just get up every day when you are in grief. Be well, girl.

      • sagecreek

Yep. She still looks so sad.

      • largishbearishAtlish

I noticed that too…perhaps with the (understandable) weight loss, something a little..softer? fluffier? fuller? a spot of color? the first thing I noticed was the ‘ab’ (thin stomach) and there is a sadness here….maybe time for a new stylist?

    • http://www.facebook.com/laurie.brown.965 Laurie Brown

She looks like a stick of Fruit Striped Gum and also like she hasn’t eaten since Cory passed.

    • save_the_hobbit

It’s pretty awful, but…I can’t imagine being in her position, so she gets several free passes.

    • Kirstin McAulay

Quite honestly girl looks like she needs a hug and her grandma’s cooking…. kudos for making it out at all but this is not a good way to go.

    • Kent Roby

How is that top even staying up? Gee, I feel really bad for hating this; I still just want to give her a hug. And Uncles Dearest hit the nail on the head re: her difficult balance with her public appearances.

    • SusannaGA

Why so summer-ish from head to toe? I understand that’s she in Cali, but still … I don’t get it, when a fall look would be so much more appropriate and easier for her to pull off right now.

    • bertkeeter

Actually like it! Feels young…not Tits and Ass like she usually does…Color with the tiny lines-stripes interesting…n nice shoe!

      • marlie

Funny that you say not T&A, since her right boob looks like it’s on the verge of escape. ;)

    • lobsterlen

I may have really liked this if it had some sort of jacket, sweater, something across the shoulders. Right now it reminds me it looks like she was wrapped in bandages.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Ouch.

    • carnush

Just weird and unflattering. Makes me sad.

    • filmcricket

I like that she’s got her bangs off her forehead – she’s got such a beautiful brow and I don’t understand why she chooses to hide it under heavy bangs so often. The bottom half would be super cute if it were summer. The bodice we won’t speak of. Poor Lea. Hugs to you, girl.

      • kathrineb

Agreed! So happy she got rid of the long bangs too, she really does have gorgeous brows!

    • MK03

Calvin Klein, how could you?? You’re supposed to be better than this.

      • AzSportsGirl

THIS! i canNOT believe this is CK! I wear his Ready to Wear at least 50% of the time at work and I can’t imagine this being flattering for anyone.

    • CeeQ

“Just got out of the shower” hair + bodice headed for the southern border + no colour whatsoever = fug.

    • MaggieMae

I like the less war paint. Uff, that bodice!

    • yethica

Oof… the face… she looks so depressed. I feel bad for her.

    • Brookwater

That outfit is toned-down?!?!? Really? Wow! Is that fabric terry cloth? She looks like she on her way to the pool.

    • Goldie

The top of that dress looks like she’s used an Ace bandage to wrap her boobs and squash them down so she can pretend to be a boy and go out for the football team. I can’t imagine it would look flattering on anyone.

She just doesn’t have the sparkle she normally does. I don’t think she is nearly ready to be out doing these public appearance but knows she has to. I can’t imagine having to go through grief so publicly.

      • MoHub

I was thinking of all the mezzo sopranos I know who have to invest in breast binders so they can sing trouser roles.

        • formerlyAnon

Not that I know any particular mezzo sopranos, but I did think of breast binders and trouser roles. And I’ll raise you a few women passing as men in order to serve in the military in the days before intake medical exams.

          • MoHub

And Julie Andrews in the opening of Thoroughly Modern Millie coming to the city, purchasing a breast binder, and having it explode with the force of her upper frontals.

            • formerlyAnon

              Well played!

            • MoHub

              Thank you!

          • Cheryl

            She’s Streisand from Yentl!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

This isn’t a wet look, it’s a dry shampoo look.

    • AzSportsGirl

This fabric looks like the candy-striped “tea-towels” (as my Granny called them) from my Granny’s kitchen. A little dingy and faded from years of use, bleach, and sun-drying.
Candy-striped Calvin Klein terry cloth. I must sit down lest I be overcome with the vapors.
I will say I watched Glee for the first time in over a year.. She was emotionally devastating.

    • Virginia McMurdo

I feel like I must be outdated but like….it is autumn. Damn. Wear autumnal colors now and things that signify the cold weather. It seems like an endless, nebulous summer lately and I am sick of seeing it. Or maybe she is a trying to channel a sexy-ish mummy for Halloween?

    • Danielle

I am so NOT a fan of the greased back hairstyle on either gender.

    • Lucas

      I kinda like it

    • Joanna

She looks REALLY sad. That’s all I can see.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      OH HONEY NO.

    • JaCory Deon

She has lost a bit of weight it seems. That said, nothing is really working for me here. Why she insists on this nude makeup is beyond me as she can’t pull it off, nor is the hair working. That color is a no to. Poor thing, bless her heart.

    • Carleenml

      Calvin Klein CKitchen Towels.

    • GorgeousThings

I can be ungentle for you…

      Bwahahahahahahahahahaha! Of course.

    • mightbewrong

I know where I’ve seen that before, and it’s the wallpaper at my old pediatrician’s office. No joke. Same ugly off-white color and little colored lines. They could’ve at least given it a less ugly shape.

    • Monabel

Unlike many fellow BKs, I like the fabric. The dress (?) is a monstrosity.

      • formerlyAnon

Agree with you on the fabric.

    • kim bunchalastnames

this would be a great dress to wear on a cruise to mazatlan. in june. if you were 19.

    • melanie0866

Unless she was in the southern hemisphere, WTF. It’s OCTOBER. She looks like she’s going out for drinks on the beach.

      • Trickytrisha

Well, it’s been in the 80′s in parts of So Cal lately. We eagerly await cooler temps while we wear our sundresses and this sort of uh… semi monstrosity?

    • Claudia Berry

      It looks so cheap.

    • snarkykitten

It looks like that stretchy bandage wrap. So no.

    • marlie

Aside from the questions of what to wear while in mourning… I just don’t like it because it’s ugly, and doesn’t fit her well. And she seems incredibly uncomfortable in it, as well. It’s like she’s keeping her right arm tight into her body to prevent her boob from slipping out the top OR the bottom of the bodices. And what starlet wants a dress that squishes her boobs that way? And I hate the way the cups are sewn into the dress. AND the whole thing looks beachy. In October.

She should get rid of the top and put the skirt, shoes and rattan (?) clutch in her closet until spring.

    • Crystal

That hair would be okay if it weren’t SO. SLICKED BACK.

    • formerlyAnon

I love the fabric and like the skirt. Too bad the top takes it to pool party.

    • http://www.momforless.com Crystal

      Lip. Color.

    • littlemac8

Well, I can say this: she does look sad!

    • SophieCollier

Is that even on the right way?

      • demidaemon

It’s an excellent question without a possible answer, thus exposing the true stupidity of this garment.

    • GTrain

      horrid

    • demidaemon

That is one ugly dress. i feel like her boobs should be in mourning. For themselves.

    • Pterodactyl111

      Wow, that is HIDDY.

    • Mariah J

She looks like she hasn’t eaten in a month and could give two shits about this event. Poor thing. I’ll excuse the complete lack of effort.

    • Dagney

If that is not an “of course” then nothing is. I mean, come the fuck on.

    • Saturnine

So sad around the eyes . . .

    • quiltrx

Poor gal–you can see the mourning in her face–she looks thinner than usual and kind of hollow, for lack of a better word. I feel like this rather exposed, happy-party look is an attempt to put on a brave face. if the top had been completely different, it might have worked.
But heavens, her left boob appears to be in some sort of tit-pocket.

    • Lily-Rygh

That hair is an insult. To everyone. And everything. Especially God.

    • dschubba

Was that bodice heavily modified? I’m having a hard time imagining two different people thinking that this could be flattering.

    • livesarah

My 3.5yo boy, whose favourite pastimes usually involve spiders or cars, just saw these pictures and said “Mama, you wouldn’t wear that to somebody’s house. But if you liked it you could still wear half of it. Maybe the skirt”. Bless him, I think he nailed it.

    • kathrineb

I don’t have the problem with her hair…The face looks good. I love her brows, but I dislike her outfit mostly the bodice which makes it look like her boobs are having an identity crisis!

    • MaryAtRealityTea

So it’s October correct? This reads summer picnic. She can do better. Also the top is way too tight

    • Aaminah Khan

That hair with those eyebrows is not her greatest look, I’m afraid.

    • RoseJB

What’s with the weird tassle treatment at the waistband?

    • ThaliaMenninger

The hair is just awful. It’s weird that something simple, like changing soft hair to slicked-back hair can make her go from pretty girl to HIDDY in one fell swoop.

    • Clair Ellis

That dress is bad. Just bad. I still can’t help but feel for her every time I see her though. I feel the same for Michelle Williams too. For some reason it’s more heartbreaking to me than just loosing a spouse/significant other bc of the circumstances. But seriously, that dress is terrible.

    • decormaven

Aww, what a missed opportunity. There’s tons of public sentiment on her side right now; all a savvy stylist needed to do was dress her in something that reads plucky & pretty. This choice, however, is one of the most confused styles of dresses I’ve ever seen, and it screams summer from top to toe. Sigh…

    • kimiakay

She really looks different here in some undefinable way, other than clothing. As far as the outfit, I don’t see how that top stays put. It looks like it’s ready to just pop down, like a rubber band that’s been pulled. Is the fabric seersucker? I like the skirt and the way it falls, and the shoes. Her makeup and hair are fine, restrained.

    • lamh36

Anyone notice she’s lost ALOT of weight? She’s always been a tiny thing, but she just seems more so than usual.

Ugly dress. Hair is kinda cute though. Makeup is ok. And I don’t like the shoes. But I’m going to repeat that that dress is uuuuugly.

I think the skirt and shoes are fun and flirty. A bit more summer than autumn, but I still thought they were pretty. But I have to agree about the bandage look she’s wearing on top. Too bad.
