Kelly Ripa in Erdem at the 2013 Broadcasting and Cable Awards

Posted on October 29, 2013

Hey, kids! Can YOU spot the difference between Kelly’s dress and the one the model is wearing? Take a red pen and circle the differences! But not if this computer belongs to your mom, dad, school or office, mkay? Then you get permission first.

Kelly Ripa attends the Broadcasting and Cable 23rd Annual Hall of Fame Awards dinner at The Waldorf Astoria in New York City in an Erdem dress.

Erdem ‘Jane’ Silk Maxi Dress

We question whether the colors really work for her, but even so, this could have looked so much better if it fit her correctly. You take the drape away and turn it into something skintight, and all the interest just drains right out of it. If we can see your bellybutton through it, it’s no longer a maxi dress, we’re thinking. We’re also thinking we shouldn’t be seeing your bellybutton through your dress. We’re old-fashioned that way.

And geez, would it have killed her to pick up one of the colors in her dress for the clutch? Dark purple or blue would’ve suited us fine.

Okay, yes. We’re a little cranky.

I will never understand why thin women will choose to wear something that’s too tight on them. It makes you look like you have a bit of a gut, no matter how flat your stomach might be.

Plus, with the draping the dress looked a lot more chic and effortless.

    • marlie

I see your point, but that question applies to just about everyone. Why would *anyone* want to wear something that’s too tight, knowing that it’s going to show every single bump and bulge and imperfection, no matter how small.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

I’m with you. Unfortunately many people don’t care…for instance, most of my young coworkers. Practically everyday I see a bellybutton divot through a thin, too tight shirt stretched over a muffin top that was created by the too-tight and too low-rise jeans. And don’t get me started on the ass cracks. I’ve seen too many of those at work too.

        • MoHub

It was worth seeing Kelly’s dress just to have you use the term bellybutton divot. That is pure genius!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Your comment reminds me of why I was thankful for a dress code when I was in the working world. Some things are better left unseen.

      • ccinnc

Esp. in satin. It’s like painting a rough wall with glossy paint.

  • This just makes me want to watch “My Geisha”.

  • Donyelle

Hand to Kevin Aucoin, if these women don’t start wearing color on their lips. They’re starting to look like corpse brides.

    • marlie

I keep telling myself that I’m not going to comment on it because I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but FER REAL.

    • Chaiaiai

Oh Mr. Aucoin, you were gone too soon.

    • bellafigura1

I’m mad for the make-up line. The lipsticks are perfection.

  • She’s so tiny, how is it even possible to make a dress that is too small? It’s a negative amount of fabric. I like the dress, I wish she had left the intended silhouette.

    • TrixieConQueso

Negative 2 is the New Zero. ARGH. Also. Cannot take anymore of her lil jokes on her show where she says she was the “unattractive” girl in whatever story she is telling. STOP IT.

      • demidaemon

Hey, don’t make me get on my totally irrational and rational love for Kelly Ripa soapbox!

    • BerlinerNYC

Part of me is relieved that there is enough meat on her bones to make ANYTHING look too tight on her. I’ve totally read rumors/blind items about how even sample sizes have to be taken in to fit her. Maybe she’s so used to having things taken in that her people ignored the intended draping? I love her, btw.

  • marlie

She ruined this dress by making it skintight. Otherwise, it would be fine. Not great, but fine. And it’s too long for her, too.

  • MsKitty

Kelly wouldn’t have looked bad if she just put on a pair of Spanx, even if she is rail thin.

    • MoHub

Actually, better underpinnings all round. Her bra isn’t doing her much good either.

  • ashtangajunkie

If it were a little looser, it probably wouldn’t have gotten so wrinkled, I’m thinking. Her makeup looks really nice – I would like a touch of colour on her lips, but her skin looks flawless. Some colour in the clutch and her nails would have perked this up a bit.

  • Golfkat

The draping is only there because the model is holding up the dress. (Unless you’re talking about the detailing at the neckline).

    • marlie

It’s far looser in the torso/waist on the model than it is on Kelly.

      • alyce1213

    • alyce1213

I think the draping referred to is at the waist and below, where the fabric loosely drapes from the tie belt to the floor. Kelly’s version is skin tight.

      • SugarSnap108

You can even see it in the bodice on the model.

  • Call me old fashioned (You’re old fashioned!) but to my eyes, visible belly button will almost always = NOPE.

  • decormaven

Such a tough look, and that’s a bit disconcerting, given the floral print. Wish the hair had been styled more softly, and the dress not fitted so tightly.

  • Kelly

Blah hair, blah lips, and a dress that’s too small. Pity — Kelly can look so good.

  • Christine Hart

Not for nothing, I actually saw Live! this morning, and she said that she was originally planning to wear another dress to this event and had to do a last minute swap when she realized she had worn the planned dress to the same venue a few weeks earlier, and so it might not have been styled correctly due to the switch. I know she wasn’t particularly pleased with how she looked.

    • I feel like, if you’re a woman of her wealth and means and NYC access, there should be more options at your finger tips. Maybe she’s an anti diva and didn’t demand a rack of dresses on her doorstep in ten minutes or less, as some celebs most certainly would have?

      • MilaXX

I don’t think Kelly has that much pull. She’s C list at best. Besides she tiny and short, whatever she gets needs hemming and fitting.

        • alyce1213

Really? You think C list at best? With a big, national, eponymous TV show? She’s not a movie star, but she’s not C list I don’t think.

          • MilaXX

Yep, she does well, has endorsements that will pay her kids tuition. I like her, but I’m pretty sure she’s still in the rankings of buying her own clothes.

        • Huh. I would have ranker her a little higher. She is a wee thing though. Being a multimillionaire, I’d think she’d shop more, alter, and have hanging in her closet waiting, as opposed to borrow. We’ve all seen how people refuse (can’t?) alter borrowed pieces, thereby making them look like shit.

      • alyce1213

You may have something there, about anti-diva. She’s a big mommy and I think actually spends time with her kids, always in jeans and sneakers,

    • marlie

That’s interesting. We rarely see ladystars in the same thing more than once, so that’s rather refreshing to hear that she was initially planning to do that. And I’ve totally done that, where I plan to wear something, and then I realize that I wore the exact same outfit under the same circumstances, not too long before (e.g., getting my work ID picture re-taken; going to a meeting with the Big Boss).

  • joancarol

I think I can see her intestines.

  • Jessica Freeman

You should be cranky, Uncles. This was a lovely dress until Mrs. Ripa here turned it into a skin tight gown.

  • lunchcoma

The world is full of slinky bandage dresses. Why not just wear one of those rather than try to make a flowing dress into one?

  • JaCory Deon

She is all of a size 0 so why she’d want the dress tighter than on the model is a bit strange. The dress itself is neither her nor there for me though.

  • bellafigura1

I could have lived without knowing she has an outie.

    • alyce1213

If you’ve watched the show more than once, you’d know her bellybutton is legendary. It’s appeared many times. She really should have known better.

  • sagecreek

    Why so glum, Hayley?

    • alyce1213

Do you remember her with long black hair?

      • sagecreek

Why, I am nowhere NEAR that old! 🙂

        • alyce1213

Me either. I just “heard about it.”

      • I remember her as the rebellious Haley (I think Haley) from AMC when she first blew into town (Port Charles?). Yes, I am that old.

        • CT14

          Pine Valley!

Port Charles is where General Hospital is.

          • The memory is second to go, after the ass, that is. 🙂

            Ah, Pine Valley. Memories.

  • hughman

And her morphing into Kathy Lee Gifford begins.

    • alyce1213

      • hughman

WHERE’S MY WHITE WINE? It’s ten o’clock already!!

  • mjude

as tiny as she is why in the hell is this dress so tight on her?

  • SugarSnap108

What size in existence can possibly be that tight on Kelly Ripa? This must be the Erdem for Gymboree version.

  • MilaXX

When size 00 Kelly looks like she’s expecting her 4th kid, the dress is indeed fitted incorrectly. I would have loved to have seen the shoes/bag in that burgundy color in the dress. This is a swing and a miss.

  • Cubana Loca

  • jonesybj_notreally

looks like she has an 8-pack of boobs

  • capybara_cafe

A bra would have helped, too. As it is now, it looks like the shoulder area is too big, but only because her boobs are in the wrong spot.

  • tixilyttik

The drape on the model, and the model holding the drape of the dress makes it amazing. On Kelly it’s just too tight.

  • Gina Mondzelewski Small

When a dress can make Kelly Ripa look like she has a belly, then yeah, it’s way too tight.

  • teensmom99

How could one of the skinniest people ever wear a too-tight dress?

  • Monabel

I’m SO TIRED of all this tightness. It makes people look worse than necessary.

  • Paula Pertile

I could fit her in my pocket, and still, I am so afraid of her.

  • Lilak

Seeing double today on TLo: Ripa here strikes me as the JV version (and I do mean ‘JV’) of Bosworth’s effort (and I do mean ‘effort’).

  • quiltrx

LOL again, my pride cup runneth over at being able to pass a T Lo test!
First thought was “well, I can’t see the model’s bellybutton, for one…and that is a good thing.”

  • MoHub

I’m thinking Carla Hall would have rocked this dress—in the original fit.

  • What a disappointing print for Erdem. He’s usually really good with florals.

  • Danielle

You know your dress is too tight when your belly button is visible.

  • pop_top

The fit of that dress makes her look pregnant.

  • MoreShoes

And she has an ugly bellybutton 🙂
