Katie Holmes in Azzedine Alaïa at the Gravity NYC Premiere

Posted on October 02, 2013

Ladystars! Why are you all making us say the things we don’t want to have to say?

Katie Holmes attends the premiere of “Gravity” in New York City in an Azzedine Alaïa dress paired with Michael Kors pumps.

Michael Kors Avra Pointed-Toe Snakeskin Pump

Cute dress. Invisible shoes.

Now, look. Before we say anything, all y’all need to remember the Number One rule here: It’s not about you. It’s never about the average gal and her style needs here. So when we say that Katie really needed a bit more makeup and that generally, we’re not loving this micro-trend of clean faces on night-time red carpets, it does not mean that we think so-called “normal” women absolutely needs to wear makeup or wear more makeup. Okay?

Alright then.

Because really, that face is just too clean for the event. It’s a film premiere at night, she’s a star, she’s dressed up, she knew her picture would be taken. She just looks washed out in the pictures. You can’t really see her face all that well from a few feet away. It makes her look like she literally just woke up a few seconds ago. In terms of celeb public appearance looks, this is daytime makeup. It’s cute, but not quite serving the look or the venue.

Wow, I didn’t know she was that fit. Look at her arms.

The dress is nice, depending on the angle and pose it can look kind of shapeless, though.

    • Deac82

The dress has quite a lot of shape…its an Alaia knit dress which are known to suck in and accentuate. The problem here is that Katie herself does not have a lot of shape. She’s quite fit…but somewhat straight proportions. I think its a cute dress for her, but its not a red carpet dress. Like TLo say, its a great day look but lacks the nighttime drama.

      • wisdomy

Agreed. That’s a day dress, IMO.

        • sunflower

I think that it’s just not styled well. If she had better shoes and some jewelry and more makeup it might read as more of a night look? She seems like she’s styled for a luncheon more than a movie premiere.

P.S.- Long time reader first time commenter!

          • decormaven

Congrats for braving the waters! The BK Welcome Committee will be by shortly.

          • now you can really devote your life to TLo! forget about getting anything else done.

      • ajhan

        An a-what-a?

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. Can never resist.)

  • PastryGoddess

Has she always been this awkward on the red carpet? The aww shucks who me squinty pose doesn’t work when you’ve engineered one of the biggest gossip stories in the past 5 years.

    • Come sit by me.
Do you feel she was the engineer (conspirator) from the get go and that it is all sham?
I should be more cynical but I really feel like even if she knew it was a publicity related relationship that she was still in way over her head and was nearly lost to that cult. I believed the dramatic escape drama. Am I foolish?

      • oklund

I believed it too. Having a kid together kind of clinched it for me.

        • Rhonda Shore

me too, but her escape WAS well planned and well executed.

          • alyce1213

            Good thing it was.

          • Rhonda Shore

make no mistake…i applaud her for it. She’s smart. And her arms look fantastic, she’s been doing some serious working out!

          • she’s just lucky her dad is a big-time divorce lawyer. i think nichole kidman could have used some help like that.

        • Adelaidey

Unless Suri is Chris Klein’s kid. I’m saying she is. I’m just saying, what if she is?

      • alyce1213

No, not foolish. I think she was in over her head before she really knew how insidious the cult is. I think she was swept up, fell really hard for him, marriage was the way to go when she got pregnant, and there you have it, with all the bells and whistles of being Mrs Tom Cruise. The exit was certainly engineered. Fortunately for her she has a wise and powerful family that helped get her out.

      • mlle

Scientology is pretty bats, and I don’t think she did enough googling before she accepted the part of Tom’s girlfriend/wife. So I assume the early years were a PR move, but the divorce went down was a way to get away from the cult.

        • Disco! My exact take on it as well.

        • when i think about some of the insane things i did for men when i was in my early twenties, i understand completely how she could have gone into this, thinking that her dreams had come true. i remember reading that she had a tom cruise poster on her bedroom wall when she was a little girl, so that says a lot.

      • Tracy_Flick

I’m guessing that she was vulnerable in some way emotionally, and that he’s really charismatic and charming in person. I vote for “swept off her feet” with maybe 5% co-conspirator. ITA that’s she’s lucky to have people to help her get out. Her exit seems a lot less painful than Leah Remini’s.

    • DTLAFamilies

She was giving full-on fashionista fierce when she was married so I assume the bare face and girlish poses are a deliberate strategy to distance herself from Cruise and the cultists.

      • Kristi Mitchell

My sentiments exactly. She looks much more like the K.H. pre-Tom Cruise.

        • fursa_saida

What I also find interesting re: pre vs. during vs. post Cruise is that she’s actually posing much more here than I remember her doing since she married him. She seems happier and like she’s…projecting more? I guess? I’m not sure what to call it. She seems basically like she feels really good, whereas usually on the red carpet she’s seemed very reserved–first with him, for all kinds of reasons I can barely begin to guess at, I’m sure, and then after because she probably was trying to seem as reserved and Noble Mother Protecting Daughter as possible. It’s sort of refreshing to see her looking kind of enthusiastic for once.

  • The entire look is daytime lunch, not nighttime red carpet.

    • poggi

Yes, and it is a very cute and easy daytime look, but not enough for evening.

      • TrixieConQueso

Kinda twee and as a make-up artist, I must say she needs false lashes to accentuate her eyes for pictures. Almost all starlets wear them, and so if you don’t, your eyes can look naked. Dress those peepers!

  • Till I get to the shoes, she looks like she’s on her way to cheerleading practice.

    • decormaven

Or a tennis match. Don’t even bother getting to the shoes- nothing to see.

      • Tennis match is what I was thinking. Just needed sneakers to complete it.

  • MilaXX

Save the cheerleader, save the world

    • mjude

      OMG….love the comment 🙂

  • Scimommy

Phew! I thought you were gonna say she was too old for that look.

    • bellafigura1

      She is.

      • filmcricket

Agreed. This is a 20 year old’s dress, at most. Her fabulous legs notwithstanding, she needs to grow up a bit. At least the shoes fit, though.

        • mlle

          It’s Suri’s dress.

        • Lori

That head tilt thing she’s doing in the 2nd pic certainly picture doesn’t help.

        • kathrineb

Wow. I would be very sad if I believed that once you were past twenty you suddenly had to wear long hems and stop wearing colour.

      • Scimommy

I know! That’s why I thought they were going to say it!

  • anotherkate

That dress is cute as hell. Agreed that the whole look is too daytime, though.

  • Introspective

great bod. sad trombone on the look.

  • Emily Dagger

In theory, I love the dress, and she’s incredibly buff.

But the ponytail and the posing make it all come a cross as a bit jejune and a bit desperate. Like she’s trying to make us think 17 year old Joey Potter, and not 30-something mother who’s been hyped as some sort of fashionista for years as part of her long-running publicity scheme/marriage.

  • Jessica Freeman

It looks like she just left her tennis match, threw on some heels and showed up at the premiere.

    • MaggieMae

Exactly. Lack of RC make-up, and lack of jewelry makes it look like a tennis outfit. Thank you.

    • Sam Smith

Agree, the dress might be cute for running errands or a walk in the park but it seems way to casual for a red carpet. Then throw in pony tail and clean face and it really comes off as not trying at all.

  • schadenfreudelicious

This trend to look dewy and au naturale just makes me want to pull out my blotting papers and lend them my mascara…

    • ikillplants

Her foundation is also a shade or two off of her skin tone. You can see the difference by her hairline. Not right…

  • Lisa Hager

What is going on in her hair? There’s some sort of blue/white ribbon? Is she on her way to the country club for tennis?

    • Sobaika

I thought so too, b that’s the astronaut from the Gravity posters, she doesn’t have ribbon in her hair.

    • MilaXX

The astronaut on the poster is photo bombing her.

    • Anathema_Device

I thought it was a plastic banana-clip type thing at first. Given how she’s styled, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

  • Meg

I think the dress is cute, but a bit too juvenile for her…Maybe in a different color?

  • Anathema_Device

Zero jewelry, from what I can tell. Not saying she needs to load up on bling, but earrings and a bracelet would go a long way to making this look like she didn’t just step out of the dressing room after trying it on.

    • Indeed. Right now this look is saying she really doesn’t care much about the event, or the film.

  • Janet B

    Tennis outfit with tennis makeup.

  • In the seventh pic down the spaceman on the poster looks like a hairclip and I would like to have a spaceman hairclip. Which I would wear with this dress because I love this dress!

She’s not in this movie, right? She doesn’t need to go all out for a photo op I think.

  • Judy_S

I am having an interesting reaction to several of these pictures lately (Bullock this morning, Zeta-Jones, and this one) which is along the lines of, what a nice-looking woman. They look as if they dressed to please themselves rather than for fans and photographers. Which I guess is what you’re saying, or warning against…

    • MilaXX

When you job is basically pleasing the public, then dressing appropriately for an event is your job. She’s wearing a daytime face to a night event. An event with a step and repeat. It’s her job to look the part.

      • Judy_S

I understand. She is supposed to be on another level. But I am surprised and kind of enjoying these lapses.

    • Jackie4g

I was just reading about how the movie stars of the 1930s had contractural obligations to look glamorous at all public appearances, and that meant being groomed, dressed and accessorized any time they were outside of the home, even for the most mundane of circumstances. The expectation has evaporated with time and tide, and since there is no more mystique surrounding movie/stage actors, the individual can do as she pleases. For some of this trend to look ordinary, I blame the stylists who, because it is their job, tend to overdo and overpromote, until some of the star ladies just look like walking display fixtures. True, this isn’t enough of an outfit for someone who is on public display, but I can understand being fed up with the whole things and going for “neat and clean”.

  • Emily

Guys, cut Katie a break. She was clearly on her way to tennis practice when she remembered she had this red carpet thing to go to.

    • mshesterp

Thank goodness she had those heels in the car!

  • fauxprah

If it were not for those shoes, i’d say she was on her way to the tennis court!

Too short – too boxy – not good.

  • StelledelMare

Is it just me or does the makeup (or maybe lacktherof) make her face look much paler than the rest of her body? It could also be lighting but it’s really standing out to me.

    • MilaXX

If she’s like me and fairly religious about wearing sunscreen on her face it may indeed be paler than the rest of her. With me it’s usually balanced out when I wear makeup though.

  • Little_Olive

But I think this is the best I’ve seen her look. I don’t really mind the shoes. A bit more makeup and oomph to the hair would have helped, but I repeat, she looks great. That little dress really suits her -and she rarely gets the skirt part right. Right?

  • She should go back to the short, pixie cut. It showcased her face perfectly. The long hair looks desperate.

  • SugarSnap108

Her legs look amazing. There, I said something nice.

  • mhleta

Her skin looks fabulous, but I agree, this look is pure daytime. Early daytime. Like, throw-some-sneakers-in-your-purse- and-hit-the-tennis-court-after-brunch daytime. In fact, box it up and ship it to Serena Williams.

  • Rhonda Shore

THANK YOU!!! I HATE CLEAN FACES ON RED CARPETS (and i meant to shout, lol). I love that fuschia color and think this look would have been well served with black tights and a funky ankle boot (though i know many kittens hate those).

    • Lola Channing

excellent call with the tights/boots. Nude pumps are so terribly dull.

      • Rhonda Shore

        why thank you!

  • lobsterlen

Tennis dress and pumps is that a thing now? Give the girl an ice tea it must have been a tough game. She is all shinny and sweaty.

  • Lola Channing

Jillian Michaels wears more make up when she chases candidates on the Biggest Loser.

  • alyce1213

Cute dress for daytime, but should be a few inches longer. She gets a pass on the shoes from me because they’re snakeskin (texture helps!) and really quite nice. More makeup would be good, and some accessories, but she looks really pretty, happy and very fit — those legs and arms!

  • Laura Renee

No, you’re spot on about the make-up and shoes. Also, why is she afraid to show her teeth?

  • paginatrix

    Pink tennis dress.

  • wonderdivaEtsy

I think Suri told her what to wear.

  • Katesymae

Great legs, but I feel like the dress is a bit juvenile.

  • E2_Remote

This whole getup reminds me of the yuppy mothers who used to come in to pick their kids up from tennis practice at the racket club where I worked as a teenager in the mid-90’s.

  • Imasewsure

I think she is going for the “fresh and young” and “real girl” vibe so it works and she looks cute…. but she’s not 20…

  • mlle

I don’t like the dress for the venue. It would work for daytime, but for evening, it looks too young.

  • Adrianna Grężak

Agree on the makeup, overall she looks more like a 30-something going out on Saturday night rather than a celebrity/actress on the red carpet. Her figure looks great though!

  • AC Simons

WWSS? (What would Suri say). This is not a flattering look, and it’s way too young for her. Getting into ice skating outfit territory, too.

  • Qitkat

Azzedine Alaïa designs some fabulous dresses. This doesn’t come across as one of them. It is however, a cute late casual summery dress. I, marching to my different drummer, am all in favor of the clean face, especially when someone is still young enough to have great skin. She’s not in the film, so I think she can get by with less drama, less makeup.

  • Cheryl

Wow, she’s in stunning shape. Great arms, shown off nicely by the dress. Perhaps a little more mascara? Or eyelash extensions?

  • TAGinMO

    Gads, that SMIRK. So smackable.

  • kathrineb

Love the dress and its colour. The shoes are not so exciting.

  • Tamara Hogan

    Serving Joey Potter realness.

  • GillianHolroyd

I’ve always thought that she loooooved fashion but had no sense of personal style so she ends up looking half-assed most of the time. No, *all* of the time.

  • Lori

Daytime make-up for a daytime dress. IOW, I think she looks good, but totally wrong for the event.

  • Terri Terri

Holy cow, I think she looks absolutely gorgeous.

  • twocee

She looks like she just got out of cheerleading practice. That dress is at least 10 years too young for her.

  • lalahartma

    Legs! I approve.

  • Tracy_Flick

She’s so adorable, with the dimples and whatnot. The dress is cute and flattering, but strikes me as a bit too casual. And the shoes just don’t go – it sort of looks like when you forget to bring your business casual shoes to work, so your only choices are the Sorels you have on, or last week’s fancy pumps.

  • Erica_Vuitton

“Oh no this is an Alaia!” “An awatta?” “It’s like a totally important designer!!!” Cute dress, stoooopid posing. I like the shoes but the zero make up and DIY hair is amateur level.

  • vahtel

All she needs to complete her look is a tennis racket.

  • kalisa

    Is she wearing Suri’s dress?

  • marlie

I could have MAYBE been ok with the nude shoes (because these are gorgeous) if she’s had on some really eye-catching accessories. A necklace, a clutch, SOMETHING.

  • jjtxgrrl

    So true about the make-up!

I think the same should be applied to Angie Everhart and her obvious lack of makeup, with her uber shiny face!!!

  • GorgeousThings

If that’s the Katie Holmes/Bobbie Brown makeup collaboration thanks, I’ll stick with MAC and Chanel.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Cute dress, but she looks like she is ready to play tennis. Or maybe, with that terrible hair and no makeup, she just played tennis.

  • Suse

What is the deal with ladystars posing themselves in that pigeon-toed way? I’m seeing this more often and it looks stupid. Lena Dunham does this a lot.

  • Trisha26

She no longer looks like Katie Holmes. And she looks more than just “no makeup” tired.

  • Jacquelyn

Really lazy hairstyle. And she needs better makeup.

  • judybrowni

    Stop smirking!

  • it’s a given that her shoe choice is atrocious, and let’s not even mention the pigeon-toed pose. her makeup is giving me apple-cheeked farm girl. but check out those guns!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

The shoes are my favorite part of the outfit. If she liked them so much she should have worked the rest of the look around those shoes. Surely there are dresses out there that would be best friends with them.

  • crash1212

I’m feeling quite contrary today, and so I shall say I don’t care what the venue is or whether or not she’s appropriate – she looks exceedingly cute and fresh and rather hot. I’m usually not a “naked shoe” proponent, but I like the deployment here.

  • I’d love to see her break out of her default mode of ‘cute.’

  • Trickytrisha

Would a few more swipes with the mascara wand kill you, sweetie? Or some jewelry? Or, you know.. an actual dress, not a little knit skimmer. Maybe you’re hoping to get by on your tan and your trips to the gym, but some effort would be appreciated by your fans and others. City mouse > country mouse.

  • imakeart

Give her sneakers and she’s ready for a game of tennis.

  • Tatiana Luján

I think she looks beatiful, but I do feel surprised that tis is a night event.
I don’t know, I think the clean face trend/thing on the runway can be a healthy cultural change. Am I being too optimistic?

  • Bridget Smith

I agree that the shoes were the wrong choice for the dress, but as far as invisible shoes go, this combination of shape/texture/wearer is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

  • E. D.

    The skirt is too short.
    The hair is too casual.
The shoes are not right with that dress.
    Needs accessories.

  • Joanne Abrams

Besides her arms, her legs are also great! Very fit and pretty. I do agree she needed more makeup for an evening event

  • Nicole S.

I’m not digging the ponytail with the tennis skirt…

  • Sunraya

You are 100% right. . She looks beachy!

  • Linda LaPaz

I think she looks 10-15 years older. In the face, I mean. The dress is cute.

  • quiltrx

She looks like she remembered at the last minute she was supposed to be there, and thought the cute dress she threw on would make her invisible makeup and invisible shoes disappear. It almost worked, though not like she meant.

  • I agree. She could have spent the day getting groceries and picking up the kids and changed her shoes in the car on the way over. LOE!

  • kim bunchalastnames

her body is SICK, but yeah, her face didn’t come to the show.

  • Caroline

That second picture of her clearly shows she still thinks she’s a 20-something. Honey, you are a divorced single mother in your 30s, stop posing like you are anything other than that.

  • macwell

    She’s got LEGS! Woah! 🙂

  • Jonquil

  • demidaemon

She looks naked to me here. Like she went out half-styled. Seriously craving any sort of jewelry. Come on, Katie, throw us a bone here.

  • AndreaSkates

Also, that dress is 1″ away from being tennis wear and doesn’t belong at a nighttime event, IMHO.

  • sienna elm

The dress looks too young for her and it resembles a tennis outfit. It’s like she’s trying to pretend she’s still the young thing she was when Tom scooped her up!

  • Mary Featherstone

    Katie Holmes goes to Wimbledon

  • CheriCPat

Also, there is an age at which hot pink kicky mini dresses are no longer appropriate. I am not certain what that age is, but I am certain it is at least six months younger than Katie is here.

  • lonepear

Her stylist is slacking, but her personal trainer deserves a bonus.

  • Clair Ellis

I think her thighs could crush me. You go with your fit self Katie. Just remember mascara next time.
