Kate Winslet for Vogue Magazine

Posted on October 16, 2013

Why does her face look so weird here?

Kate Winslet covers the November 2013 issue of Vogue magazine photographed by Mario Testino and styled by Tonne Goodman.

It’s like they pasted her face on someone else’s head.

Donna Karan New York jersey wrap dress | Duro Olowu metallic silk jacquard cape | Art Smith cuff from Leah Gordon Antiques

Lanvin rose-print silk-satin overcoat | Bracelets from Woodard & Greenstein American Antiques, Leah Gordon Antiques, and Melody Rodgers

She looks better inside. The clothes are gorgeous, but we can’t tell if the posing is designed to highlight or pregnancy or hide it.

Kate is virtually unrecognizable on the cover. And barely so in the inside photos. I like the last pic, but I’m not really in love with the rest.

  • Latin Buddy

Definitely trying to hide the bump. They used black to camouflage the body and used print to pull the eye away.

  • NOLA_gal

I’m betting they didn’t like the roundness of her pregnancy face and just PS’ed it out, thus rendering her mostly unrecognizable.

    • sugarkane105

Yes. And after seeing how beautiful and – hate to use the cliche term, but – GLOWING she was on the red carpet just a few days ago, I’m disappointed they decided to change her face so, so much.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I’m so glad you told me who this was. I never would have said, “Kate Winslet” if asked. The clothes however, are uniformly gorgeous.

    • Laura

I thought Uma Thurman when I saw the cover.

      • norseofcourse

I thought it was someone wearing a Jerry Hall mask.

  • SewingSiren

Kinda weird looking. The pose in pic #2 in particular. The couch looks very uncomfortable too. Did they photoshop her pregnancy out, or were they taken along time ago?

    • Sarah

I think a while back, but they are def. camouflaging.

    • marlie

It’s likely that these pictures were taken months ago, so she just wasn’t showing as much.

  • EEKstl

1st inside pic: Hide it; 2nd inside pic: Highlight it.

    • RedRaven617

That’s the way I’m seeing it as well.

  • alyce1213

    Ye Olde Photoshoppe.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

    The Devil’s photoshop.

  • ChaCha_70

That cover shot is horrible and photoshopped to where you can’t even recognize that it’s a picture of an actual person. Why? She’s a stunning woman! Ridiculous.

  • Imasewsure

Hope they paid her in coats… these are gorgeous… I would also say I love the black dress in #2 but I don’t want to encourage any more black on the RC right now… cover is twisted, plastic-y and hiddy

  • mellorcr

I think whoever photoshopped her was confused… “Wait a minute…. that’s not Cate Blanchett??? Uh oh!”

    • Celandine1

When I saw the cover I thought someone morphed photos of Sharon Stone and Madonna then photoshoppef the crap out of it.

  • hughman

I’m a little fascinated by the wild Medusa hair. Does it have it’s own trainer?

    • decormaven

      Ha ha! Like minds…

    • Rand Ortega

You’ll have to call its agent for that information.

    • Meredith

      YES, absolutely it does.

  • decormaven

What’s with the Botticelli hair? I can hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

  • baritenor

It’s a bit Meryl Streep in “Death Becomes Her”…

    • Rand Ortega

      LOL! “NOW a warning?!!!”

  • stellamaris73

I see more Jerry Hall than Kate Winslet in that cover shot.

  • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

I think she looks great, haters to the left. The photos are always done at least a few months before hand, so who knows how much she was showing. And while I’m all for celebrating a pregnant body, it doesn’t need to be the only thing you can show off while you are pregnant. She’s a beautiful stylish woman, whether or not she’s baking a bun.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Did Kate and Meryl’s face have a Photoshop baby?

  • xmixiex

very pregnant and on the cover of vogue. get it girl.

  • susan6

There’s something vaguely Madonna-ish about her face.

  • Clueless_Jock

I’m amazed by the windswept hair with stationary clothing.

    • vitaminC

Or the sharp ear and blurry strap. It’s a composite of two photos, at least–probably they took the best bod and face images and combined them. Not uncommon with celebs, who can’t be called back to reshoot.

      • http://www.rachelmmurray.com/ Rachel M. Murray

thanks for the explanation. It would be interesting to see the two images separately. The windy hair and the odd angle don’t help the picture – it makes a beautiful woman look uncanny in such an odd way.

  • Rand Ortega

What a pretty painting of Kate Winslett.
    What’s that?

  • JDreesen

also – depending on when the photo was taken – she may not have made the formal announcement yet, causing some purposeful art direction re: the great bump disappearance of 2013.

i haven’t read the article of course (what’s an article?) but it just says “new movies, new love, and new life” on the cover, so…yeah i’m running on pure, uncut speculation here. that’s kind of my thing*.

    * just kidding; pretty sure that’s everyone’s thing.

  • Garcia Loca

Who the hell is that on the cover?

    • Sarah

      Jude Law in a wig?

  • Jaeda Laurez

It’s like somebody went nuts with the Instagram filter that fitness models use to make their abs stand out, except they did it for her cheeks. Not good.

  • kittenwithaquip

I think she’s either being told, or deciding for herself that she should cant her face a certain way to look more slender. Being a chubby broad I usually lift my chin and square my jaw a bit so I look better at certain angles.

  • Lori

I think her face looks weird on the cover because it’s not actually a picture of her face. They ‘shop so much that it’s essentially a drawing of her face. Look at the hair. It’s about 2 swipes of the mouse away from being Final Fantasy movie hair.

  • Belvane

The cover looks likes they morphed a photo of Winslet with one of Uma Thurman.

  • Danielle

So much wasted potential here. She’s really a striking woman.

  • Margaret Grace

I can’t figure out if those are pregnancy breakouts on her lip/cheek (pretty common to get, but also completely understandable to airbrush two tiny spots), or beauty marks (no need to airbrush, as they’re a natural part of her). I’ve never noticed them before – anyone else?
(I don’t mean this as a knock on her beauty, because I think she’s stunning no matter what, but I was just wondering if anyone’s seen them before).

  • RussellH88

I saw this on the rack when shopping yesterday and I didn’t recognize her. She looks more like a younger Meryl Streep than Kate Winslet.

    • jorinde

was thinking that too when I saw the thumbnail!

  • H2olovngrl

I think it’s time for fashion editors to step away the photoshop; it’s gone too far.

  • Hermione

Didn’t she famously raise a big stink a few years ago about being photoshopped by a magazine? I guess she has changed her opinion.

    • marlie

She did, but I don’t know if she really has that much say when it comes down to it.

      • demidaemon

I think once the photos are taken, a star doesn’t have very much say in what they do with them, especially when Anna Wintour is in charge.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I saw this cover shot somewhere else with the word “Kate” and I thought it was Kate Hudson. I stand corrected.

  • 3boysful

They’ve almost made her look like 1980s model Kim Alexis.

  • MilaXX

I get a weird Face Off (sfx show, not the movie) vibe from her face here. The cover show especially almost looks like her face/head has a slight wave to it like her wind blown hair. After seeing her on the RC and considering how good she looks in real life, this is just not acceptable.

    • JDreesen

yes! like mid-morph between “original model face” and “final creation face”. that’s my two-year-old’s favourite part of the show.

      …and my husband’s.

…okay, and mine. we’re suckers for some image morphing.

but not on poor Kate. she didn’t sign up for that shit.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

I just want the leather sofa. Pregnant, not pregnant, her head, someone else’s head… I will sell my soul to the Wintour. May I please, please have the sofa?

  • jmorino08

I never realized how much she looks like Gillian Anderson.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Girl that is NOT your hairline!

  • tarqueeny

I love how her hair looks. I don’t really have a problem with any of these images, but do they always crown people’s heads with the VOGUE banner on the cover? It looks so weird.

  • River

Somebody got waaay too PhotoShop happy. Sad, ’cause she is gorgeous.

  • Little_Olive

Because it’s a Sharon Stone mashup.

  • dirk gently

Rotate the cover 90 degrees and it starts to make sense. They photographed her on her back. That’s why her hair looks amazing and her face looks bizarre.

  • Jeanettesca

Way too much photoshop! She’s almost unrecognizable. Too bad because she’s stunning in real life.

  • nannypoo

I you didn’t include her name here I would not have recognized her.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

uh…uh…wtf? My favorite magazine with one of my favorite actresses and I hate it. I really, really hate it. What is that with the hair? And why did they re-touch her beautiful face? This does not even resemble the person in the big red dress from the other day.

  • AndreaSkates

Her face looks weird because her body is pregnancy voluptuous while her face is Photoshop sculptured to remove all the softness that naturally accompanies that body. This is the clue that they’re trying to mask the pregnancy in the photos…and failing miserably.

  • bertkeeter

Tad windy hair thing going on inside?

  • jif

Vogue must be between Photoshop interns at the moment

  • joanna dash

Wow Jude Law looks really good in make up.

  • hmatz

I didn’t even recognize her. Doesn’t photoshopping a star to the point that she no longer looks like herself defeat the purpose? She can’t sell magazines if we don’t know that it’s her on the cover.

  • Sunraya

They photoshopped her face smooth, taking out any dimension, so she looks plastic. Bad job.

  • Camille Chapman

she is one celeb who looks terrible photo shopped. Ive seen this done to her many times, especially in her ads

  • rage_on_the_page

Can they STOP airbrushing the shit out of everyone? For Christ’s sake.
