Kat Dennings in Vintage Lanvin at the “Thor: The Dark World” Premiere

Posted on October 23, 2013

We could totally get behind this dress if it was styled right.

Kat Dennings attends the world premiere of “Thor: The Dark World” at The Odeon Leicester Square in London in a vintage Lanvin gown.

Even though the gold skirt looks like a table at a wedding reception.

No, it doesn’t look particularly modern (which is, of course, the whole point with vintage) but it suits her perfectly. She didn’t take it where it needs to go, though. Basically, she needed to Jessica Rabbit this motherfucker up. To be honest, she’s mostly there. The ladies are front and center, she’s got the strong lip and the bling on her wrist. It’s the hair that’s the problem. We’re all for re-interpreting vintage looks through modern sensibilities, but we think this dress pretty much needs to be styled in a literal manner. In other words, she needed the really lacquered Old Hollywood glam-style hair, not the modern, messy, JBF hair. Also, a couple chandelier earrings. If you’re gonna go for it, honey, then really GO FOR IT. Hell, put the opera gloves on. Take one off slowly and throw it into the crowd. Get your Gilda on, girl. You’ve got the looks for it.

“Put the blame on Mame, boys. Put the blame on Mame…”

    • mjude

      that warms my heart :)

  • Sarah

I love her, and I love this dress, but yeah, the hair is not right for it.

  • PostsYouCanDanceTo

PROTIP: Kristen Stewart is not a style icon; please do not emulate her ‘look’

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

This is pre-Stewart. This is very much early 90s Winona Ryder/Angelina Jolie goth-grunge.

  • Rebecca Harvey

The top is just a tiny bit too small. I know they need support, but let those puppies breathe!

    • lunchcoma

It’s not just that it’s too small, though it’s that too. I think the asymmetry would make things look off on the right side even if the fit were a little better.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I know it’s vintage, but I want to rip off that bottom piece so it can stop making Kat Dennings less sexy.

  • lobsterlen

I would never want to be a part of the modern fashion world if having “I just went to spin class hair” is excepted.

    • 3boysful

Au contraire! That would be awesome! Then you COULD get the exercise in! ;)

  • Janet B

Perfect dress for her looks, too bad she didn’t put more effort into her hair.

  • LauraWL

Wow. She is really such a beautiful woman. I agree about the hair though, that would have taken it to a WERQ. Although I think chandelier earrings would have been too much.

  • RussellH88

It kinda looks like a Project Runway avant-garde challenge dress. “I wanted to contrast the heavy darkness of the top with the light flowiness of the bottom.”

  • filmcricket

She’s just so luscious. Agreed that shampoo-commercial waves were called for here. I really hate the skirt on that dress, but if her hair were better, I probably wouldn’t even bother to scroll down.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Ehhhhh, I feel the Uncles T and Lo are being rather generous and kind on this one.

I’m not loving this dress at all. It looks super home sewn and not in the interesting, fresh idea, up and coming designer way. More like the scrap fabrics, don’t know a lot about putting dresses together way. The lip color is too harsh, and yes, the messy, bed head, hair is just wrong.

She’s a gorgeous young woman, and I love that she is not your typical looking TV starlet, I want better things for her.

  • Lori

I can’t get behind any dress that’s doing that unfortunate thing to Kat Dennings’ boobs. The words “squashed” and “cattywampus” should never describe a woman’s chest.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Especially one as mammarific as hers.

      • MoHub

Mammarific! I think I love you!

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Made up words are my specialty.

          • JDreesen

mine too! well, more my fortispecitudination, really.

  • demidaemon

I think this is pretty universally bad from top to toe. Sorry.

  • lunchcoma

I’m going to pick on the fit in the chest. I have some sympathy, since I know from personal experience that many dresses are tough fits on busty women, but sometimes you just have to realize that a bodice isn’t for you and that you’ll have to keep looking for that one perfect dress.

  • MilaXX

Agree, give her some Veronica Lake hair & dangly earring, maybe a Liz Taylor cocktail instead of that bracelet.

  • Denise Alden

Somehow I’ve never noticed how much she looks like a young Bette Davis.

  • Mary229

The hair is a total mess but I still absolutely love this look on her. Fabulous.

  • SewingSiren

Agreed the styling is too casual. Shoulda gone over the top. The asymmetrical black velvet bodice is beyond beyond.

  • Tatiana Luján

    A belt would have helped.

  • marlie

I’m not thrilled with anything here, except maybe the lipstick. I’m not loving the dress at all, and the asymmetrical bodice is giving her a titscrepancy. The bottom of the dress reads as 80s prom/bridesmaid to me. And it looks like she didn’t really bother to do her hair or makeup, other to put on some lipstick. BUT, that lipstick is a FAB color on her.

    • mlle

Her face would look more finished, with intentional emphasis on the lip, if she’d filled her brows in.

      • CT14

        You’re right.

I never fill in my brows because they’re thick, so maybe she’s the same. However, she’s on the red carpet with those flashes. Brow makeup would have helped!

        • mlle

I only fill mine sporadically, but I’m also not in a job where I pay people to make sure I look good in photos.

    • Targettaste

Titscrepancy is the word. I like asymmetrical lines, but this makes her body look asymmetrical.

  • 1964edithgrove

This is not her dress – it’s wearing her. Charlize Theron?

  • Trickytrisha

Yep, that hair is “just got done with a 10 mile bike ride” hair. Why bother with a a dress like that if you’re not gonna do it justice?

  • CeeRich

    BABYHEADS!

    • Florence Whytingale

Don’t agree. This is the best her tits have EVER looked.

  • kcnitch

Better hair or no, the gold skirt kills the look as far as I’m concerned.

  • MoHub

What is it with designers’ fascination with squished boobs?

  • luluransom

    Missed opportunity.

  • ovarB

Nope…cannot get behind this one. The asymmetry of the neck line looks like she pulled it up a little too hard on one side and is now relegated to boobs askew.

  • 3boysful

Ignoring the boobily fit issue, I really love this dress. But rule 912: Messy hair rarely goeth with black velvet and gold satin.

  • steeg of their own

This dress was fitted for a girl with slightly less boobage than Kat Dennings. The way it fits, if her boobs had been a bit smaller you wouldn’t see that weird discrepancy where the structure of the dress is propping one up higher than the other.

  • CT14

    Baby heads!

But that hair almost completely distracts from them. It’s awful.

Brush the hair, give the boobs a skosh more room, and then we can talk.

  • MzzPants

Floor-length velvet would look less like a home interior accent.

  • Samantha Irene

Sometime I wish I was a celebrity purely so I could do stuff like “Put the opera gloves on. Take one off slowly and throw it into the crowd”. Oh My God – I would have so much fun acting over the top. But I don’t think I’d love the whole invasion of privacy etc – I’d have to be famous on a classic star level – respected, loved, but not so insanely famous as to be constantly stalked..

  • shopgirl716

    Behind you 100%.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’ll never not think of this as ‘dressing room’ hair. Shame, because it could have been fantastic.

  • Monabel

Love the dress. The quality of the gold satin is high, look again at the soft sheen. Not a bit tableclothish.

  • NC_Meg

Does anyone know what year/collection this is from? It looks very 80s to me. I guess 80s can be vintage now but when I hear vintage, I think 50s-70s.

That is my way of saying that I think this dress is ugly. Kat is a stunner so this makes me sad.

  • alyce1213

For starters, it doesn’t fit. Babyheads popping out all over ruins the line of the top.
No effort with her hair — none.
And — this dress screams for more jewelry.
    Makeup is very nice.
“Get your Gilda on” pretty much sums it up.

  • Cadence Woodland

“Get your Gilda on,” needs to be a t-shirt. Just saying.

  • Lauren

I don’t necessarily think the hair is purposeful. Nothing can turn perfect retro curls on a head of long, thick hair, into a rats nest than the damp, windy clime of a place like London. There’s no amount of product that could stop it.

  • YoungSally

    Optical titscrepancy

  • Imasewsure

Definitely needed to Gilda the Sh&t out of this…. oh well, points for going vintage anyway. Keep trying!!

  • Tanya Wade

Sigh. Almost there! I have to say, I am not a fan of her acting, but Miss Dennings is a bombshell I would jump the fence for. She is just stunning, and I’m waiting for the right dress/hair/shoe/jewelry combo to come along. This is not it.

  • hillmad

    She’s got Bette Davis lips!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Overdrawn lipstick is my pet peeve. Looking at both her and Katy Perry earlier today, you can see how the upper lip especially is drawn beyond the lip line. I know this is supposed to make the lips look larger and reshape them I guess, but I think it looks ridiculous to have lipstick on your face. It looks like Kat here has a perfectly lovely “cupids bow” which some make-up “artist” has obliterated. And, If my hair looked this bad I wouldn’t be able to leave the house without brushing it first.

  • Celeste

“Get your Gilda on”! Absolute perfection!!

  • ShaoLinKitten

Also, the titscrepancy kinda ruins it.

  • elizonthelam

Usually, hair is the one thing on which i can’t get behind your otherwise fab opinions. But here, you’re so right!!! Tidy and shine that mane up stat! It doesn’t look JBF; it looks JPM, just plain messy.

  • ashtangajunkie

I would love this if her hair were done properly. The dress is spectacular on her.

  • quiltrx

Definitely needs a big ol’ pile of hair on top of the head and a big ol’ pair of earrings.

  • formerlyAnon

I like this a lot. (Y’all are right about the hair.) It’s impressive and it’s pretty.

And it’s very effective – I found myself thinking “sweetie, we already KNOW you’re a mammal, you needn’t prove it.” And then I realized that I see a lot more breast acreage regularly in these posts, without feeling quite so reminded of them as, well, features connected to a functioning human body. [Gratitude and bonus points if you followed that awkward ramble along my neural pathways.]

  • Calinda_L

She needed to hire a coupla gays to do her hair and makeup, rather than trying to be her own gay (um… that might not sound right…)

  • Alloy Jane

I agree with the notion that you guys are being generous here. Any 16-yr-old goth girl can slap on a bold red lip, some bangles, and a velvet metallic ball gown in ten minutes or less. And this is definitely looking like she had barely that much time to get ready before she had to hit the pole. The hair isn’t even JBF, it’s “I just walked out of chemistry.”

  • GillianHolroyd

I do not agree that this would have looked better with laquered old Hollywood glam-style hair, she would have looked artificial and out of her element. I think that JBF hair was absolutely the way to go. I’ve only ever seen her (occasionally) on her tv show and this is completely in character. She would have killed this look if she’d worn over-the-elbow length gloves.

    • DuBey2

I agree totally. I think the hair kept this look young enough and 2013-enough for her. Haven’t ever seen her, though. I just hope she does more useful things with her beauty than Kristen Stewart has.

  • tereliz

This is exactly what my hair looks like after I take it down from being up in a scrunchie all night…

  • lalahartma

    Omg! Lol! That is all.

  • littlemac8

Miss Dita could show her how to do her hair!

  • HobbitGirl

The things that dress is doing to her boobs are TRAGIC. The girls do not look happy.

  • oohsparkley!

I wish the underskirt was a dark patterned brocade. It’s a little bit fancy wench at the Ren Fair, but she looks stunning and sexy. I want to run up with a hairbrush and fix hair.
