Julianne Moore in Givenchy at the Carrie World Premiere

Posted on October 08, 2013

Mama White wrapped her dirty pillows in a pillowcase. We’ll pray together.

Julianne Moore attends the “Carrie” World Premiere in Hollywood, California in a Givenchy gown.

Well, it’s better than Chloe’s dress, but that’s not exactly an accomplishment. We don’t hate it, but we don’t love it either. We think she does a surprisingly good job of wearing white, although it would never be our first choice for her. Our main problem is with the shape, which seems strangely binding up top. It’s all flowy on the bottom, slinky and body-hugging in the middle, and weirdly wrapped at the top. We’d suggest removing that pillowcase, but then you’re taking away the only element that provides any interest, leaving her in a very plain white gown, which would be even worse.

It’s not a horrible look, but if you’re going to put a pale lady in a white gown, it better be crazy-flattering and interesting to look at. Not really happening here on either front.

Greek Goddess on the red carpet… It’s such a strange shape… maybe if the dress had been in a different color, it would have been something completely different. In white is kinda meh.

It looks like one of my first student efforts in draping class.

    • RussellH88

She looks like a high fashion version of the scene in every movie where the woman comes out of the bedroom wearing a sheet post-coitus.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

Or Celine Dion in that video where she’s walking through the halls of some mansion and the white drapes are flowing… and the guy is riding the motorcyle… Just me?

        • RussellH88

That description made my mind go to Total Eclipse of the Heart.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, I think that’s “It’s all coming back to me now” – is it? I’m not big on my Celine videos!

            • RussellH88

I have no idea. I know very little about Celine.

            • Iva

              It is indeed.

            • NYCGlamourpuss

I only remember it because it’s one of the few songs by her that I do like. And when I saw the video, I just thought, “Wha?” That’s why it sticks out in my mind.

    • ashtangajunkie

It’s a bit strange, but I actually like it on her. I think she looks quite gorgeous, which I suppose isn’t a huge accomplishment when you already look like Julianne Moore. I love her shiny red hair.

      A toga party premiere?

      • Rhonda Shore

Your remark hadn’t posted on my screen yet!

        • decormaven

No worries! Discus at work. :-)

    • Rhonda Shore

      TOGA!!!!

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

That hair, that skin, that smile!! I am transfixed. She radiates from the inside out. I don’t love the dress, but I love her for wearing it. She’s really gotten away from the frankendresses and bear trap shoes, and moved to a cleaner, more polished, yet somehow still relaxed vibe that I can’t get enough of. It seems ‘demure’ was the password for this premier.

      • sagecreek

Yep — I think she needs to be graded on a curve, and this is SO MUCH BETTER than she was doing a couple of years ago.

        • demidaemon

I definitely agree, although there is something decidedly off with this look. I think she could have done better, but those are often the key words surrounding Julianne Moore.

    • MilaXX

Agreed. Don’t completely hate it, but don’t really love it either.

    • nannypoo

I like it. I like it better than her yellow dress from a few days ago, and it’s way better than most of her outfits.

    • WittyCism

At least she’s ready for that lobster dinner.

    • mjude

the dress is whatever but her hair/makeup look pretty. I do love her.

    • marlie

The fit of the dress is a little funny in the top. I think I dislike when white dresses have a lot of different elements because it’s impossible to see them with the bright lights and flashbulbs. As it is, she has a sheet wrapped around her torso.

I like the clutch a lot, and her hair and makeup are very pretty.

    • filmcricket

Get rid of the bib, add a statement necklace to go with that fabulous ring, boom: done.

    • kat89

She’s posing in such an odd position with her purse in front of her ladybits in every photo. I wonder if the dress is more sheer than she’s comfortable with? Other than that, she looks good.

    • janierainie

“Mama White wrapped her dirty pillows in a pillowcase. We’ll pray together.”

      Hahahahaha!!!

      • Rhonda Shore

        love the dirty pillows reference!!!

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

      Dirty pillows?

The white and the fit are unflattering.

      • Katesymae

“Dirty pillows” is a Carrie reference. To which I believe the correct reply is, “Those are my breasts, Momma.”

        • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Thanks. That comment had made no sense. Now it makes SOME sense. :-)

    • SugarSnap108

She is gorgeous. The dress, however, looks half-assed. Draping requires Rami or someone similarly passionate.

    • Snailstsichr

But her freckles are so divine, I will forgive the sheet. Love the clutch – but I also follow a lot of people who play with beads on Pinterest.

An Open Letter To Julianne Moore:

When it comes to skin, you and I are just about the same color. And even though I do not have access to Givenchy gowns and stylists, I know better than to drape myself head to toe in white. If for some reason I had to drape myself head to toe in white, I would make sure the top part doesn’t look like it was originally made for waving (as in, “I surrender! Don’t shoot!”), and I would be sure to add some jewelry to help take a bit off focus off that uninterrupted field of whiteness. You are so beautiful. Don’t let the bastards sabotage you. They don’t care about you.

      • demidaemon

It’s time for some postage! Let’s mail this baby!

      • sojourneryouth

I agree. Normally, I marvel at the quality of her skin and gorgeous, unfucked-with face, but something about the white makes her look a little pink, yellow, or orange depending upon the picture. Gurl is fierce, but this dress is making her look sick.

    • bertkeeter

Her HOTEL called…They want their bed sheets back!

    • Sunraya

Hahaha!! Looking at the thumbnail, I thought she was headed to a toga party!

    • NYCGlamourpuss

“Take that dress off and burn it in the incinerator, and we’ll pray together!” (Just kidding, it’s one of my favorite lines from the original movie!) This isn’t terrible – it’s a little odd, but it’s miles better than some of her red carpet ventures.

    • Molly

I want to touch that dress, which is my sign of tactile approval.

    • jilly_d

nope, I love it. Great hair, GREAT bag. A vast improvement over what she usually wears, and she looks happy to wear it!

    • Katesymae

      Toga! Toga! Toga!

    • AndreaSkates

Toga! Toga! Toga! She looks like she should be doing jello shots at a college party.

    • jw_ny

It needs to be a bit softer/more draped at the neckline…not so taut. Otherwise, I kind of like it…wouldn’t have thought white would suit her.

    • Tanya Wade

Gentlemen, thank you for the dirty pillows line. The dress? Blah. I love Miss Moore, but she can’t hold a crucifix to Piper. This movie has “pass” writen all over it.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love everything in this look.

    • PastryGoddess

I kinda like it. It’s a fairly classic silhouette with a twist. I think she looks good and hey, she’s not wearing a Frankendress.

    • Matthew Davie

Every ladystar needs to be sent to a “how-to-hold-your-clutch-in-front-of-a-step-and-repeat” remedial posing class.

Some girls pull it off effortlessly, while others (like Ms. Moore, here) have body positions that just scream “LOOK. AT. MY. PURSE.”

    • julnyes

      I like her freckles.

    • lilazander

I’m just sick of the white outpour on the red carpet, and runways too.

    • Constant Reader

I need that ring. The rest of the outfit I do not love, but Julianne is gorgeous as always.

    • GillianHolroyd

That drape is diving right into her armpit and looks a bit odd but overall, hair, makeup, I think she looks great. It was only a year ago that she was sporting frankendresses, this is 1000% better.

    • conniemd

I’m sorry you didn’t put any pictures of Julianne’s white together with Chloe in her swamp colored dress. The thought of those two colors together makes my eyes think of bleeding.

    • CT14

It gets worse as you scroll down, but still not bad for Moore.

    • EEKstl

      TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!

    • Rick Aiello

White is not her color. It makes her look sickly. :(
