Julianne Hough in Bibhu Mohapatra on EXTRA

Posted on October 17, 2013

Y’know… we’ve gotta give the gal some credit here. This isn’t quite working, but the effort is damn impressive.

Julianne Hough makes an appearance on EXTRA in a Bibhu Mohapatra dress.

Bibhu Mohapatra Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Quirine Engel

She has a history of dressing three decades above her actual age. To see her in something this youthful and fashion-forward is a pleasant surprise; especially considering she didn’t really screw it up. In fact, she looks good. But that dress is super-tricky to wear and while we’re impressed by how close she is to pulling it off, we think it takes someone with a little more style cred to manage it. That skirt’s tough on anyone and the shoulders aren’t all that flattering. Still, we want to be encouraging, not bitchy. More in this direction, dear.

Yes, this is a step in the right direction. With all the angles in the top/skirt, though, a shoe without an ankle strap might have been a better choice.

  • teensmom99

I thin there’s a fit problem–this had to be sized up and tailored. With so much going on, the tight look on the top isn’t helping.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

One should always be careful with clothes with some sort of exaggerated shoulder line, to keep the hair off the shoulders. It shortens the neck and lessens the impact of the look. A sleek swept back style would have suited this much better.

  • Jessica Freeman

Well she wore her grandma shoes…so there’s that…

  • oklund

The bottom half works – the top half needs better fit and an updo.

  • Diego!

I think she looks quite impressive! Well done Julianne!

  • Sobaika

Her hair is always wrong, and it’s often the more aging aspect of her looks.

    • Tess Danesi

Exactly! Her highlights are so harsh and cheap looking (says the woman with purple ombre) and her hair style looks like something I could do with a blow dryer (this is not a compliment, I’m hopeless). She deserves better, at least the dress is a step in the right direction.

Purple ombre? I think I may be in deep covet.

        • Tess Danesi

I used to do hot pink, but this is much better, not to mention, much more subtle, and the purple is permanent color so the fading is pretty much history. Give it a go! I love it.

          • Lucie Smith

I went full purple all summer, but then went back to red for the fall because professionalism, whatever, but I highly miss the purple and may steal your ombre idea. It would be easy enough to hide if needed and sounds amazing.

          • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

I was trying to change my avi to a pic of it but it’s too much trouble and would be miniscule. But you totally should steal it, you can put it up in a french twist and almost totally hide it if you had to. Damn professionalism!

      • Sobaika

        Your hair sounds amazing.

        • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

          Thank you!

  • steeg of their own

The word ‘stumpifying’ was invented for this outfit. It doesn’t even look good on the model.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I have to agree. Not flattering, and it looks too small, and the girls need some lift.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I think a good bra would have addressed most of the apparent fit issues nicely.

        • 3boysful

I was just going to type “It takes . . .” : A good bra!

    • mlle

Those black hip patches are what kills it for me. Try imagining the dress without them and it looks a lot better.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Bless her heart. She tries harder than any girl in Hollywood. I feel there should be more support for the boobs too. She’s a bit shmooshed.

    • Jaeda Laurez

      you read my mind!

      • Constant Reader

Mine too! I’m not sure if it’s the dress bodice pushing the girls down, or if the problem is her bra (or lack of one).

  • Jaeda Laurez

A good bra would help. And new hair. But I like it.

  • Janet B

Julianne has made a good attempt at a difficult dress.
I really wish she would change her hair, a bit darker and maybe longer.

    • wisdomy

I’m just pleased she gave her almost-black eyebrow pencil the day off.

    • Rhonda Shore

actually, i think her hair and make-up look good here – she looks relaxed and pretty.

  • NOLA_gal

All I can see is Bibhu Menopause-tra. It led my brain to think this was too old for her before I even saw it.

  • http://osiatynska.com/ osiatynska

Could it be that this dress possibly truly works only on Zoe Saldana?

  • jackiexx

I know she’s desperately trying to establish herself as a serious actress, not just a dancer, but I really think her look could benefit from some of the more retro glamor inspired makeup and hair looks she wore on dancing with the stars (though not the accompanying spray tan)

  • RussellH88

I think Chloe Moretz would be able to pull this off, but I’m surprised that Julianna is able to not look like a mess in it.

  • Kate Andrews

I think the main issue is that block of white in the skirt — maybe in a different color, and this would work better.

    • mlle

I thought that at first, but I think it’s the black patches – they segment the dress so that there are a lot of diagonals along her hips, and it’s overwhelming given the brevity of the skirt.

      • Bebe

I think it’s the white block, too. It looks like she just ate dinner and her napkin got stuck to her skirt.

  • Little_Olive

I don’t know how she managed to shorten her legs so much, but it’s the boob treatment I have most problems with. They look like the tears of sadness that should be cried for their abandonment.

    Actually, I don’t like anything.

  • MilaXX

This is the most age appropriate thing I’ve seen her in in a long time,

  • bertkeeter

Fit is terrible on her..Too tight ( thats why zipper in front is bunching up). She needed next size up! The shoe is way to conservative for this “King and I inspired w/ roof top temple pointed sleeve detailed” trendy mess! Also it’s FALL for christ sake!

  • Nelliebelle1197

Are her poor breasts visiting her belly button?

  • ashtangajunkie

    Well, she’s getting warmer, anyway.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

    I love the shoes.

  • crash1212

I love this dress. LOVE. She looks OK…which is about eleventy billion times better than usual. However, what is going on in her breastal region? Does she not have a bra on? Is the bra she chose to wear better suited to the trash can due to it’s nonexistent supportive qualities? The saggy kind of ruins this for me. Cute hair, make-up and shoes, though.

  • sagecreek

Cute from the side, horrible from the front.

  • amber.

I honestly don’t know why she makes everything so difficult. How hard is it to dress a skinny white woman? I don’t understand. She can practically wear over 80% of fashion. And she has money, so she can hire at least a part time stylist. I know college students working in McDonald’s who dress better than her. This dress is whatever, her hair is whatever. Whatever.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m good with the strange shoulders, but her boobs are screwing up the line of the bodice and the skirt isn’t working for me at all. And, yeah, the dull hair is off-putting. I give her 2 points for the shoulders. And 2 points for the shoes. So that’s a 4 total out of 10.

  • LondonMarriott

Every time I see something like this, I hard David Bowie yelling “It’s a scroll down!” a la walk-off in Zoolander.

Nice effort, Jules. I would tell her to let those piggies breathe, but dancers have hooves, not feet.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I always have to laugh at how I’m tricked by seeing the top of a garment first. I thought, oh, this is nice, until I scrolled down to the full photos and saw that she is on fire. The dress is crazy. I like the top but not the bottom.

  • Jessica Goldstein

I like everything but the white part of the skirt. This is the freshest and most stylish I’ve ever seen her look.

  • Imasewsure

I like the hair and makeup… and the shoes…. no to the dress though…. don’t think I would like it on anyone really though

  • Tracy_Flick

The bodice doesn’t seem to fit right across her bust. I agree with other posters, with a better fit this would have been much improved.

  • Danielle

There is hope on the horizon!

  • jen

Wow, best she’s looked in ages!

  • dschubba

It’s great, if she’s being framed from the waist up. The bottom’s a little busy for TV, IMO.

  • alyce1213

The dress is cool from the hips up, that print should have been continued to the hem. The nonsense on the bottom fails.

  • giddypony

BRA! honey, with a bra the weird shoulders would be fixed. Her boobs are making her look older.

  • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I’m thinking Zoe Saldana in a ponytail or even Miley Cyrus with her hair knobs could have made this dress sing. It needs a strong, angular shoulder to stand up to that neckline.

  • Qitkat

Utterly fascinating dress. But in this case I think Julianne needed to step up the styling ala the way of the model. The quirky topknot and the netlike bootie heel shoes gave it the panache that was needed. Sometimes an exaggerated dress needs simple styling, other times it requires a serious commitment to a total look. While she looks cute here, the bodice and waist are not fitting properly (could just be due to posture, or undergarments), and she is too casual with the hair so overall the look is not dynamic as it should be.

    • decormaven

      Good call!

  • CatherineRhodes

    Frankendress.

  • marlie

I like this on her a lot. The only part of the dress that I don’t like is the dinner napkin that seems to be stuck to the skirt. And I LOVE her shoes.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

cute dress, girl. too bad about your hair. and your droopy boobies.

  • webslice33

    not that bad..an ok effort

  • Trickytrisha

She’s such a lovely woman in a sweet dress, needing a better bra and someone to tell her those eyebrows are too darned dark for her face. They’re the first thing that catches my eye in any picture of her.

  • ItsDicey

Killer shoes and an up-do would’ve done wonders. Very nice improvement, though.

  • bellafigura1

Everything about her leaves me cold but I actually love the hair — color and tousled styling, it looks young and modern to me.

  • swanpride

I doubt that anyone would pull off that dress…everyone would have big hips in it.

  • demidaemon

I think it’s sad that, for all of her appearances, the one she decides to actually pull out a good dress for is Extra. I mean, what thought process led to this? “I am going to wear hideous dresses for all of my movie premieres, etc, but when I am going to be on a two-bit celebrity gossip show, I’ll pull out the best dress I’ve ever worn.” It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Also, her hair is still horrible.
