Joanne Froggatt in Hervé Léger at the Filth UK Premiere

Posted on October 01, 2013

Looks like SOMEONE is NOT fooling around anymore.

Joanne Froggatt attends the “Filth” UK Premiere at Odeon West End in London in an Hervé Léger colorblock bandage dress paired with Walter Steiger sandals and a Jimmy Choo clutch.

Now see, that’s the way to do it. Not that we think this is perfect, but as a way of drawing attention to yourself while at the same time drawing a bright line separating you from your most famous character? This works like gangbusters. We’re not seeing a whiff of the Downton Abbey housemaid that made her famous. Michelle Dockery should take a page from this book. Even on the rare occasions she gets it right, she still tends to look like Lady Mary in 2013.

Anyway, that’s a lot of hair and a lot of shoe paired with a really tight dress. We’d probably have toned down either of the first two elements, but the dress itself is perfect for her. Love the colors.

Le rawr RAWR!!! Go on wit your bad self Joanne.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

The shoes are too much – I think having the horizontal lines of the bandage dress and then horizontal lines of strappy sandals is just too many stripes. I also think that having earrings as your jewellery feature when there is that much hair is a waste. Should’ve gone with a bracelet instead.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I agree, it’s not a bad look but I think the shoes are throwing it off just a teense.

        • mshesterp

They’re black, and the dress is navy. And that throws my color-meter off. If she’d gone all metallic, I’d 100% adore it.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

I don’t mind the black and navy together so much – in some instances, it’s very nice. For me, it’s that the shoes have the horizontal design all through them, which makes it look like she tried too hard to match it to the horizontal lines throughout the dress.

            • Rhonda Shore

LOVE the dress but the shoes are just too overdone. It’s not the color that’s bothering me so much…a simple classic stilletto (metallic or navy) would have been the right choice. The hair works for her.

      • leahpapa

Agreed – I would have opted for a Wonder Woman cuff and the much-maligned naked foot in this case. But if we’re grading on a curve, she aced this look.

      • kimmeister

Yes, the overly stripey-ness is what is getting me too. Plus, the shoes are just awful in and of themselves. They have ~37 too many straps, and the dreaded tapir’s snout heel.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I had to have another look at the shoes. Very much tapir’s snout.

    • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

She looks lovely, but… WHY are they still making bandage dresses?

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Really. I hate this style of dress. She does look lovely – and she is totally rocking this super body con. style. But I associate all H.L. bandage dresses with Britney at best and Kardashians at worst – and that’s no place for Ms. Joanne here.

      • Heather

Normally, I loathe them. But I can KIND OF get behind this one because at least it’s different, and the colors are interesting, and her labia aren’t showing.

        • conniemd

Yeah. I really liked this dress despite being a bandage dress, because the colors are really beautiful together and I like the off the shoulder look. Also fits her great.

      • shirab

Thank you! Does HL even make any other kind of dress? I feel like I only hear the name “Herve Leger” in conjunction with “bandage dress.”

      • mshesterp

Oh, I don’t know–I think she looks pretty fantastic in this iteration of it.

        • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

She looks great! I grew weary of ye olde bandage dress well before Victoria Grayson—they just look like trashy therapeutic wear for a full-body sprain to me.

      • kimmeister

Because there are still people out there with something to prove.

      • Gatto Nero

Seems that’s all Hervé Léger does — and has done for years now. Enough already.

    • Jessica Freeman

I kinda feel like i want to see the criss crossing on the bust all the way down the dress, but then maybe it would be too much. I don’t care for the shoes with the dress either, but overall, she looks fab.

    • Jeremiah Capacillo

There are a few ways to successfully wear a bandage dress, and this is one of them.

    • dorkopolous

well, of course she’s not going to look like a housemaid, all glammed up on the red carpet! unless she wears a maid’s costume? weird comparison to lady mary, t&lo!

      • MilaXX

Not really. Michelle does dress like what Lady Mary would wear in 2013. Joanne could easily have fallen into that same trap by dressing super conservative or twee.

        • dorkopolous

just saying it seems easier to distinguish yourself from a character who wears a uniform rather than a posh fashionable aristocrat.

        • Bridget Smith

The thing is, I suspect Michelle Dockery IS the 2013 version of Lady Mary, so I think that dressing that way is both being true to herself as well as an attempt to continue selling her particular brand of world-weary elegance. I just wish she could do it more successfully.

          • MilaXX

I agree, although she’s been a bit more successful on that front lately.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Sigh.

    • Clair Ellis

She looks great! Can’t say I love the shoes, but at least they have character and they aren’t putty color.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

No, not loving this. Even it it is brand new, the Herve Leger bandage dress looks dated. The length plus the heavy shoe is also making her look stumpy. And, the hair is half assed.

    • estella_nyc

      Hellooooo nurse!

    • Erica_Vuitton

Small quibble, I think the whole dress should be pulled up just a smidge. One his site it’s up higher on the shoulders and the purple is right under the bust with the blues meeting right at the smallest part of the waist. Would’ve loved to see the hair up in a smooth pony and I don’t know what shoes would’ve worked for this color combo without being matching… but the gold isn’t right.

she must be staring on a new episode of ABCs Scandal. Bandage dress is like a uniform for that show….

      • MilaXX

no it’s not. Mellie and the gladiators wear suits, Kerry wears mostly Kors.

        • Not applicable

crap! wrong show! I meant REVENGE! gah! :)

          • demidaemon

I want to know how you got those two mixed up. It’s an interesting brain fart, that’s for sure. ;)

            • Not applicable

one word titles?? more PR for Scandal than Revenge? #fail

    • Heather

Her shoes are both Too Much and Too Big.

    • decormaven

I actually like the shoe with this dress. The ornamentation of the shoe flows well with the upward detailing in the waistband. The colors of the dress are great on her.

    • Frank_821

My only quibble about the dress is the length on her. I think it’s goign a little far past her knee. a couple inches shorter would be better

    • MilaXX

Joanne gets her inner housewife on!

    • Judy_S

      My favorite bandage dress ever.

    • Tanya Wade

Mr. Bates simply can’t handle all THAT.

    • Michael_Jones

Didn’t Victoria Grayson already declare that there should be no more bandage dresses? (Just kidding, she looks amazing here, and I love those colours on her.)

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Love her, love the dress (the interesting color blocking saves it entirely), can put up with the hair, but the shoes are a deal-breaker. No excuse, they’re just plain ugly.

    • Garcia Loca

Why, Miss Anna. You are beautiful!

    • twocee

Wow. Hate shoes but love everything else.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love those shoes. LOVE them. Eh to bandage dresses.

    • cocohall

The color blocking really helps freshen up the bandage dress, which should otherwise stay in the closets of all the Real Housewives. The shoes however. Gladiator Halloween Sandals. Really good if you are wearing an Elvira costume, but otherwise, nasty. Although they do seem to fit her feet. Points for that.

    • sagecreek

And still with the cocker spaniel hair.

    • Terri Terri

Do you like that black eyeliner all the way around ??

      • Constant Reader

Normally, I really hate it — but for some reason it’s working for me here.

    • nannypoo

I don’t like the shoes and I wouldn’t like them with anything, so they’ve gotta go. I like the rest of it, even the hair which seems to work with the dress.

    • 3boysful

Cannot see past the eye makeup.

    • Lauren T.

      Very Carrie Bradshaw.

    • siriuslover

I like the hair–especially as you guys point out, she’s moving beyond her Anna Bates’ persona. It’s the shoes that could be sleeker–just like her dress. But you know what, she looks HOT, so I’ll giver her a pass on those shoes.

    • msdamselfly

Dress looks great. Hair and makeup could use some modification

    • H2olovngrl

Her best accessory? That knowing smile.

    • Sara__B

      Best-looking bandage dress ever.

    • Imasewsure

In total agreement with our dear uncles again… love the dress, not the shoes and hair. Pretty look though

    • Qitkat

I am guessing that bandage dresses are super stretchy, therefore if you don’t have a perfect slim figure like Miss Froggatt does, they can be problematic. But I think she looks smashing, the best ever I’ve seen anyone in this type of dress and the colors give her such vibrancy that we never ever see in her DA character.

But the Farrah Fawcett hair, le sigh.

    • Shawn EH

Great dress, love the color-blocking, but terrible shoes for the look.

    • lobsterlen

Love the dress but not nuts about the shoes.

Joanne seems to have HughJackmanism meaning she always looks like she is having fun and enjoying being a celebrity but humble too. No matter how much I may hate what she is wearing she always looks happy which goes a long way selling a look and presenting an image.

      • demidaemon

I think it’s also a general British/Australian approach to the RC, as well. In general, American stars tend to seem more put upon (not always–just a generalization) whereas stars from across the sea on both sides always look like they enjoy it more. I wonder why that is.

    • rkdgal

Am I the only one seeing a Death Spider on her lady parts in pic #3? I’m sure it’s the lighting, but it’s terrifying nonetheless!

      • demidaemon

It does have a weird sheen/reflection. I tried not to stare at it too closely.

    • Dreamwr8tr

It would be so much better if it didn’t hit midcalf; it looks like it was made for a taller person. Otherwise it fits her well. The shoe should be simpler.

    • neonseattle

The shoes don’t go. And this is so very ‘nightclubbing with the Hiltons in 2007′. I love her as Anna. Someone dress her better!

    • marlie

She looks fabulous! I hate the shoes, but other than that, I think she looks HAWT from head to toe.

    • Constant Reader

She’s rocking the hell out of this look. I don’t love all of it (and I really dislike the shoes) but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts here, for sure.

    • kolokOlchik

      the dress is perfect!

    • teensmom99

Dress is perfect even if we’ve seen it before. The shoes are unattractive–they make her look ankle-less. And as to the hair, well, the bitter kittens know all about that kind of hair.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Yes to the dress. No to the shoes.

    • anotherkate

Ah, the Herve Leger bandage dress. It’s a rite of passage for starlets, is it not? (I distinctly remember Elisabeth Moss rocking one right after her divorce/in the middle of her rise to superfame with Mad Men). She looks hot.

    • amber.

I didn’t know we were still doing Hervé Léger bandage dresses. Literally they are so played out. So, meh.

    • Cubana Loca

The shoes are not right – too much horizontally. The dress looks great on her and I like the rocker chick hair.

    • demidaemon

I agree she looks good here. However, I feel the same way–in general–about bandage dresses as I do about sheer: I am totally over them and want them to die.

She’s making it work for her, though. Darn it.

    • andreawey

love the colors but I wonder if she can breathe in that

    • flamingoNW

Can we just ban bandage dresses? Please?

    • kathrineb

I think she looks great. Don’t know how I feel about the length of the hair but otherwise she is rocking it. So happy that downtown abbey is back!

      Mrs Baaates!
