Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2014 Collection

Posted on October 08, 2013

We don’t see how anyone who loves fashion couldn’t love Jean Paul Gaultier. The man may not be slaying the world with his chic or wowing the critics with his innovation, but there’s no denying his pure love of fashion and how he uses it to indulge his own quirks and passions. This season he took his inspiration from Dancing With the Stars.

Seriously.

He’s addicted to the French edition of the show and used it as a launching pad for his collection, folding quite a bit of Grease into the mix along the way. The resulting show was raucous and theatrical, as were the clothes themselves. We’d expect nothing less from him. Fun – and very campily French. That silver duo look like they’re competing in Eurovision.

It is now our life’s dream to be positioned at the end of a Paris runway with scorecards.

I want the floral and leather for my “Half Pint in the City” outfit genre.

  • Synnae

You need to watch the video of the show. It is bat crazy fun!
Coco does the Grease routine, the judges attack a dancer and the sound track includes Pia Zadora’s “When the rain begins to fall’!

    • Let it out

The show is amazing–all styles of music and even models getting down with pro dancers (loved the tango and the salsa)! The clothes don’t photograph nearly as well as they really look. Search for jean paul gaultier spring summer 2014.

      • MoHub

Even in the stills, it looks as if the models are really having a good time with this.

    • ItsDicey

Soooooo so fun.l I’d love to see this in person.

    • Kathryn Tewson

Wow, it IS awesome! How fun!

One thing that really surprised me though, is when you put the models in the context of dancers, they look SO THIN. In the stills, they don’t look that surprising — I mean, they’re thin, but they’re models, that’s to be expected. But when they’re dancing, they look JARRINGLY thin, I guess because I’m used to dancers being more muscular? I dunno. It just kept leaping out to me over and over again.

      • Synnae

I have 20-odd years of Fashion Show Collections Magazines (the greatest hits of each season- before the internet took over properly). I went through them the other day and I noted just how much thinner models have gotten. And in my opinion it doesn’t necessarily make the clothes look better either.

I also feel sad for the models, it is usually their natural build at age 16 but after that, most women start filling out a little and models just aren’t allowed to do so.

    • SophieCollier

Oh my god, I had the 33 1/3 record of that. I loved that song. This makes me love Gaultier even more.

      • Synnae

Me and my mates had a whole dance routine set to that record. I would love to say in our teens but this was actually in our college years. I found myself doing it while watching the JPG show.

BTW- rewatch the video clip, it is 80′s WTF fuggery at its best!

  • PastryGoddess

I would just like to say the Joan Smalls is a BEAST

    • Let it out

That is the first time in my life I have longed for a romper–sheer wizardry, putting it on her!

  • Miss WKS

    HOLY SHIT! that Chuckie model…

  • BrooklynBomber

Love some, hate some, have to look at all of it.

  • Lori

I wouldn’t wear this, it’s neither my style nor my life, but it is fun to look at.

  • Heather

Those wide necked leather jackets are amazing. I want all of them.

  • kimmeister

The styling on a few in the middle just made me think, RIP Amy Winehouse.

    • Imasewsure

I know! I thought “how much would she have loved that outfit!” RIP – now it’s just going to go to KStew with no tattoos!!

      • MilaXX

Except that one legged piece has JLo and/or Beyonce’s name all over it.

        • Imasewsure

Would love to see that “Bitch Stole My Look” cat fight!!

    • Slanted & Enchanted

One model made me do a double take, the resemblance was so uncanny.

    • Ginger

Yup…I saw those and then had to pull up her music. It just never gets old. Such a talent, she was.

    • Coleen

I just read an article about that – he really loved Winehouse’s aesthetic, so it makes sense that he’d have a tribute in the collection somehow.

  • hughman

Always love how playful and fun and reliable his clothes and style are. If anyone says “Oh, it’s so crazy!”, his response is an obvious “no shit” (or “non merde” as the case may be). I still have a Gaultier leather motorcycle jacket from the early 90s that would fit right in here (mine has a wool shearling collar).

    • joything

“C’est pas merde.” Correct my French please.

      • Vraji

We say : “C’est pas de la merde.” I thought the translation for “no shit” was “Sans déconner” but my english is not perfect.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Would you use “C’est pas de la merde” for “It’s not shit, it’s good” and “Sans déconner” for “*eyeroll* yes, that’s the point you moron”?

          • Vraji

            Yes, exactly !

  • Bexxx

This is my style and my life and I need all of it, especially all of the leather jackets. All of the leather, period. Good lord.

  • Imasewsure

Loved the peachy dress with the butchy motorcycle jacket on top… also dig the lace girlie stuff in general with the biker/Doc Martin style footwear

  • marlie

I really like several of the jackets in the first half of the collection. Otherwise, it’s a Grease-inspired crazy-fun collection.

  • raeb23

I don’t always like his clothes but I do appreciate his style, it’s always fun!

  • MilaXX

I get more Grease and West Side Story than DWTS, but it’s a fun collection. I don’t like every piece, but I like quite a few pieces. Lord help me, my favorite look is the back mullet coat dress with the boyfriend jeans and leopard print shoes.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Get out! Me too. It was weirdly, real life wearable. And I don’t really know why.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

He also does an amazing job of casting the right model to the right look. So many times the outfit was wholly elevated by the striking characteristics of the woman wearing it. This was fun. I don’t have to want to wear something to find the joy in it.

  • Let it out

Mixed in with the retro 80s stuff, which is fun, if not earthshaking–are some fantastic pieces. Love the tiered PVC dress, the peach and b&w moto-shrugs, and the multicolor romper (a cute romper? wtf???).

  • Meredith

    Fun. Everywhere.

  • save_the_hobbit

Dying a thousand deaths, this is exactly my style. Lace and leather with kick-ass boots. LOVE.

  • Qitkat

Has any other designer sent such a wide variety of models down the runway? Awesome, and so many of them have that ‘shit, yeah!’ attitude. The leathers are gorgeous. And I die with the two with the berets, they are so very French, at least in my mind.

  • bertkeeter

His designs have personality and guts! Not a stupid trend in sight! MERCI!

  • NoveltyRocker

I’ve never really gravitated toward the ballet style flat but put some actual ballet ribbon ties on them and I’m intrigued!

  • DTLAFamilies

I love the Danny and Sandy couple!

  • pattyw

Now this is what punk theme at the Met Ball should have looked like.

    • formerlyAnon

      Exactly what I was thinking.

  • joything

The motorcycle bustier? MINE. The one-sleeve motorcycle Wilma jacket? MINE. The half-skirt-half-tuxedo trouser? MINEMINEMINEMINEMINEMINEMINE!

  • kim bunchalastnames

    zomg!

  • sherrietee

I got chills; they’re multiplyin. Holy crap I love it. :)

  • LaSylphide

I can’t believe how beautifully he uses leather (I’m assuming it’s leather). Love those biker jackets.

  • DeTrop

That first hooded jacket over the jumpsuit is so fab I’m in tears. If only!

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I just keep coming back. I’ve scrolled up and down this post and I find new details and new things to love each time. People, there is a jacket that swirls around and becomes a dress. Say that aloud. It’s like a carnival up there!

  • bellafigura1

I love the white run of clothes in the middle, all wonderful.

  • SewingSiren

He should be ON Dancing With the Stars.

  • sleepycat

ever so tacky, ever so chic, ever so perfect

  • demidaemon

I have no words. In a good way. It’s so facetious and fun you can’t help but love it, even with all the inherent tackiness. My only problem is that half the models clearly did not get the memo for the spirit of the show. The ones who did really made their outfits.

    • MRC210

I know. I can’t imagine getting to walk for this show and not smiling all over my face. Maybe he told them to pout.

  • Mudskipper

    Oh, spiral dresses!

  • manina

Really? Most of these would get kicked out of Project Runway.

  • ItsDicey

    Badass! Loving the black boots.

  • gefeylich

A Moto Guzzi and Gaultier pants/I got a reason, girl, was Immanuel Kant’s/and I like it.

    Yeah, still applies.

  • MoHub

Lesser designers need to take lessons from Gaultier.

  • formerlyAnon

Brilliant deployment of the black beehive ‘do. It makes a couple of those outfits. Also, a number of these – some of the black leather combos – are great not-literal reworkings of ’80s looks. I am especially taken with the tulle skirt/black leather combos.

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

    Wow.Wow. Wow.

  • ewes_urn_aim

ThankyouThankyou! for posting the link up. Watched it this morning- Got me perkier and happier than my first cup of coffee usually does!

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Holy fucking amazeballs! Now that’s fashion, folks!

  • anotherkate

I love the smiling models! (And the ones who look like they’re trying really hard to hold their smiles back). Looks like a fun show, and despite the initial drama and weirdness of it all, there are definitely some covetable pieces here.

  • Kate Andrews

That red leather dress is hotttt.

  • vickilu

That was incredible, thank you so much for linking to it!

  • Diego!

This is a reall fun collection! Very nice JP! I love the dresses with straps both vertically and horizontally. Great designs indeed!

  • Kent Roby

That spiral coat looks like it would take an hour to get into with a team of assistants, but it would be worth every minute. Very cool.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I’ve got Imelda May playing in the background – pretty much the perfect soundtrack for this collection.

  • MarTeaNi

I love nearly all of these, and it’s nice to see some variety among the models.

  • H2olovngrl

The sleeveless leather coat is TO DIE FOR!

  • valerie747

Thanks, TLo. If you had not shared the back-story about DWTS (Frenchie) I would not have enjoyed these photos half as much! Your commentary increased my enjoyment. Thanks again.

  • Snailstsichr

I loved the shoes so much, I had to go back to look at the clothes.

  • VicD

That’s a spring collection for someone who lives under a highway overpass.

  • Nice_Shirt

The model in that last photo looks like the love child of Johnny Depp and Miley Cyrus.

  • guest2visits

But for a few items; it’s too messy for me. But it looks like a good time was had by all.
