January Jones at the Isabel Marant for H&M Presentation

Posted on October 28, 2013

You know what? We’re gonna give her this one. We had our claws all sharpened and ready to go, but we can’t hate. This is fun:

“Mad Men’ star January Jones attends the Isabel Marant for H&M Presentation at the Tennis Club in Paris.

Isabel Marant for H&M Lace Tunic

Isabel Marant for H&M Tie Dye Skinny Jeans

We don’t agree with the hair or the shoes, and we’re not entirely convinced these two pieces work together, but she looks relaxed and pleased with herself, and it’s all rather a pleasant surprise coming from her.

With what would you pair that top  and those pants? They look like fun wardrobe pieces to have, but they also look like they can go so wrong in the styling.

“With what would you pair those pants?”
    A Goodwill bag.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

      I’m bowing down to you.

  • She’s a live action catalog shot.

  • SarahVN

I think the top could look nice with a white camisole underneath and some skinny jeans. A nice early-fall outfit, perhaps.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yes, perfect. Even the hair would work with the pairing you just described.

    • annrr

That is exactly what I was thinking. And that hair is cute but would work better with someone with a more homogenius hair color.

  • mmebam

I don’t know, but it’s the top or the pants. Not both.

  • RussellH88

I think she looks great if you overlook the fact that her hair looks like a frenzied mom did it in the last 5 minutes they had before walking out the door.

  • In_Stitches

Her hair looks H&M: Homely and Miserable. I like the two pieces together. It’s busy, but not discordant. The pop of black bra underneath the tunic ties the color scheme together.

  • crash1212

I actually love these two pieces together. The pattern in the top compliments those killer jeans to my eye. I would’ve done a less heavy shoe…she can keep the hair just because it’s goofy and she seems so happy.

  • Little_Olive

I cannot with the toddler (“look! my little girl finally has enough hair to do a ponytail”) hair. No, no no.

Not a fan of those pants, either.

    • kimmeister

      I saw toddler hair too!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Our adorable little great/grand niece sometimes has her hair in a Pebbles Flinstone ponytail-it does work for 2 1/2 years.

    • charlotte

When I was little, we called that hairdo a fountain.

  • Heather

But oh, the visible black bra! 🙁

    • I love a good visible black bra. I think it can be fun.

      • demidaemon

It depends on where you are going, I think.

  • Leah Elzinga

I can’t with the hair. I just… I honestly can’t even move past it. That’s not just a matter of diy, that’s a diy by a fourteen year old girl with no skills… in 1993. She’s approaching scrunchy territory with that hair, and that is territory no one should WANT to approach. Seriously, the little curls around the face? She has naturally straight hair, so someone had to go out of their way to PUT those curls there. ARGH. No. Bad start to the morning.

    • Jessica Freeman

Even sadder. She paid someone to do it.

  • Emily Smith

I mean the hair goes for me since H&m is really geared at the teen to 20-someodd crowd, and that’s pretty much how they style their hair when casual, so it plays well I think.

    • Leah Elzinga

seriously? Wow, not the girls around here (says the aunty to three teen-20 something nieces.) A top knot? sure. But this is like the demented stepsister to a topknot.

      • Emily Smith

I saw a ton of the college set doing this. I never did it, but I also don’t shop at H&M. But the girls I know that do wear their hair like this frequently. The carefully messy top knot is still a thing I guess.

    • filmcricket

I did the Pebbles Flintstone thing a lot when I was in my 20s, and I think she looks super cute here. Then again, my 20s were nearly 20 years ago, so…

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Pebbles Flintstone — you nailed it, lol.

    • Bexxx

As a 20-someodd, I would never, have never, and have never seen it. This is what your hair looks like when you wake up hungover after passing out with all your clothes on. This is Sunday morning Dunkin Donuts and sunglasses hair.

      • Emily Smith

As a fellow 20-someodd, I sadly have seen hair worn this way on purpose.

  • Sarah

HAIR = BAD. I kinda think there’s something going on where you can see the chevrons in the top b/c of the bra and they call to the pants, but it doesn’t matter much because HAIR = BAD!

  • teensmom99

I love the Boho Betty look.

  • sagecreek

Oh, so cute! Or maybe it’s just because her thumbnail was right next to Gaga’s, but this is like a breath of fresh air, and for JJ? This is edgy.

  • Rand Ortega

    Love everything but the hair.

  • Jessica Freeman

The shirt and pants aren’t that bad together. I”m a bit more tame, so i would take either and pair them with just a solid color. Those shoes, as well as the hair style, should be burned in the fiery pits of hell.

  • cocohall

The hair. It looks like an afterthought, but I bet it actually took some concerted effort to get that weird bubble/burbling fountain effect that she’s got going. But I do like the rest and she seems happy and relaxed and those aren’t the two words that normally come to mind for this gal.

  • lobsterlen

Not sure if its the fit, the pattern, or the way she is standing but it looks like she has a bulge in her pants.

    • SugarSnap108

There is definitely something amiss in the crotchal region.

    • Oh my. We have our first polterwang of the week. So early for it too. Shame.

    • Little_Olive

      😮 can’t unsee it now.

That’s what you get for hanging out with John Hamm, I guess.

  • Tatiana Luján

That hair, that bra, those shoes! What a shame.

  • fauxprah

Didn’t HnM just recently murder a building full of people?

    • Lori

Yes they did. Cheap clothes are really expensive, just not for the folks wearing them.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        What happened?

        • Lori

Most low-to-medium priced clothing sold in the West is produced in 3rd world factories that cut every possible corner. When you don’t care about the safety of workers, workers tend to die. There have been several fatal factory fires in Bangladesh recently and H&M was a customer of more than one of those factories. Companies, H&M included, disclaim any & all responsibility for such deaths by saying that the factory workers aren’t their employees and they rely on the assurances of factory owners that the facilities are run safely and workers are paid the local legal wage.

          • Laughingworld

H&M signed the agreement in May; Gap and Walmart have not.

          • Lori

Yup. And 9 workers were killed a couple weeks ago in a fire at one of H&M’s Bangladeshi suppliers.

          • Laughingworld

Thanks for the update. Obviously signing and committing are different actions.

          • Lori

It’s a really complicated issue and yeah, signing and doing are different things. The whole thing is horrible and frustrating.

  • bellafigura1

I love it too, especially the make-up and hair. She looks like Pebbles all grown-up, and that smile!

  • MilaXX

The only think I dislike here are the shoes. It fit the venue and she looks pretty cute.

  • SugarSnap108

The top would be cute paired with a cami instead of a black bra. I’d like a chunky bracelet instead of the delicate thing she’s wearing.

I’d pair the pants with fire.

  • She looks like she’s having fun, which almost never happens, so it’s a win.

  • Lori

The shoes, hair and visible black bra are all so annoying. If the styling was much, much better I’d be fine with her wearing the top and pants together, but I never would. They’re both “busy”, but in different ways so I think they don’t really go and the average person trying to pair them would look odd.

  • I’d do black flats, maybe grey.

    • Erica

Yeah, maybe some Topsiders or loafers? The hair is also random, but she looks cute as heck–I’m even fine with the black bra, which is so not me.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

It’s a cute look that could be chic if there was no toddler topknot action. I’d like to see a leather moto jacket on top of all this.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I sincerely love her big toothy Death Smile. Not enough for me, a big fat middle aged gay man, to stand in front of the mirror for hours and hours, practicing that look in case I ever run into that nelly, spandex wearing gay men’s chorus queen who my whore-y ex was fucking in our bed — that would come across as bitter and beneath me, and I would never do such a thing. But I still love it.

    • Jackie4g

Aw, Poor Baby. That’s a horrible story and I am sorry such a thing happened to you. Go ahead and make all the faces you want. It’ll be better soon.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i am working on the current avatar’s expression, which will take care of 99% of the situations requiring acknowledgement and a facial expression. tequila shots help with that superior yet disgusted nuance the DMFC does so well.

  • jilly_d

I guess I’m alone here but I want those pants. I got excited and then scrolled back up to see them thinking I’ll never have them, and realized they’re from H&M so….score.

  • nnbb

I love the outfit, I would wear all of this… without the visible bra. Loathe the hair.

  • jbj

Shroud of Turin pants, but I love the look.

  • I love some fun pattern mixing so this makes me happy. The look as a whole reminds me of her Roman Holiday Betty, but updated to today, which I appreciate heartily. So yeah, I pretty unabashedly love it.

  • kmk05

Just… no. The hair alone is cringeworthy, unfortunately.

  • msdamselfly

She looks darling. Love the hairdo on her. Vintage Parisian..

    • Shawn EH

I’ve never seen her look so authentic, instead of pre-planned.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love that top and would pair it with skinny jeans, even a coloured pair would work – burgundy maybe. The pants (which I love as well) would look great with a simple t-shirt or sweater. I like patterned pants and wear them regularly, but I like to keep the rest of the look simple. That’s just me, but I still think she looks cute here. I’m pretending that her hair doesn’t look like that to suit myself.

  • decormaven

The topknot reminds me of the top of an antique fragrance bottle, or the headpiece in Victor, Victoria.

  • Zaftiguana

Pop of color in the shoes, ditch the harsh lip color, and beachy, high-volume hair. Fixed.

  • Glam Dixie

The Pebbles Flintstone hair is killing me, she just needs a bone in it. The outfit would be greatly improved by having a slimmer leg on the pants and if they were a bit longer. It’s cute, just needs some tweeking.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

I love her risk-taking on the red carpet, and I like the outfit shown here. She looks cute, relaxed and happy.

  • GillianHolroyd

I love the outfit when I scroll and just see it from the neck down.

The hair and the lipstick are frightening.

  • Constant Reader

For some reason, I think she’s ending up on my irrational hate list. I don’t even watch the show she’s on and barely know who she is… but I guess that’s why it’s irrational.

  • broke&fashionable

I do not mind the poodle hair with this look because it just pulls it all together — young, fun, chic. Nice work Ms. Jones.

  • YoungSally

Yeezus — I thought she was Jenna Elfman.

  • marlie

I wouldn’t have worn the pants and the top together, but I don’t hate this look. I actually covet the top. This reinforces my belief that she looks sooooo much better when she doesn’t go for severe clothes, hair, and makeup (at least not all at the same time).

  • 3boysful

Love the whole ensemble. Casual hair fits the event/venue. I generally don’t like the contrasting bra thing, but it works here.

  • LJCdoc

Polterwang. Now try and unsee that.

  • kittenwithaquip

I like the outfit, but I’m more impressed that she doesn’t manage to look like she has a stick up her ass. It’s the “Toddlers and Tiaras” hair I could do without.

  • NBG

Puh-leaze with the niceness crap. My treadmill ponytail looks better than that hairdo. Talk to the hand, JJ.

  • MannahattaMamma

  • jjjoy

i can’t get past the hair. those little curled tendrils bug the crap out of me. i personally wouldn’t mix the top and pants but everyone that goes to these things seems to just throw on as much as possible from whatever collection is being released so whatever.

  • jen

I agree, she looks cute and so happy!

  • kimmeister

The patterns are a little too busy for me to be mixed together. I’d do the pants with a solid colored top (maybe in maroon), or the top with a cami and some jeans or slacks that have a more subtle pattern.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The hair looks like an Olsen twin when they were on whatever show they were on. Sorry. Family Something, I’m sure. And the shoes are hoofy. But the top and pants look very cute.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Full House! And you are 100% right with that hair reference.

  • Imasewsure

I like the pants and top together. Not a fan of the hair but once she smiled, I even got a bit on board with that too. Cute casual

  • Kathy_Marlow

    I remember that hair style…from when I was 4..

  • tallgirl1204

I like the top and pants fine together, but I can NOT with the black undies under a white blouse. Call me old, which I am, but yuck. I would be o.k. with a black tank even, but the black bra just makes the wearer look confused, as in “I started out with a black t, changed my mind and couldn’t bother to go all the way to the skin to make it right…”

    • Jackie4g

I have seen European women do that, the black bra with the white blouse pairing. I always wondered if the person had gotten dressed in the dark?

  • God help me I love the pants and top together. I’d probably throw an infinity scarf on and a pair of flats and call it a day.

  • Sonja Brisson

Pebbles and Bam Bam hair doesn’t do it, but outfit is sorta OK

  • demidaemon

I don’t know how much mass appeal that top will have. If that’s what it looks like post-production, I can’t see many women wanting to showcase their underthings to the world. The pants are fine, but need a much more conservative top to go with.

  • macwell

Oh cmon – she looks a hot ass mess! J mean really…..

  • jw_ny

Love the top and pants paired together. It is fun, and it is a bold choice to pair those patterns together. Somehow it works…imo. The lipstick is too severe for the look tho, and the hair is too juvenile/precious . Those shoes don’t go with that pant length.

  • quiltrx

If I crop just right where I can’t see her head or the booties, I like this outfit. I would rather that were a black cami than a black bra, but I can lie with that.

  • not applicable

Damn if she cant rock the red lips. Get it, Betty!

  • Fannie Wolston

Not sure why she is playing peek a boo with a black bra. I would wear a cami underneath something by body bark (not a shill I love their micromodal fibers!)

  • She looks good, although, I agree that the hair is a little silly.
Nice “tunic”. Not sure what makes it a “tunic”, but it’s nice.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I really like the top, even though it looks a bit like mesh, but that HAIR. Good Lord with that crazy 80’s hair.

I don’t watch Mad Men, but I watched “X-Men-First Class” over the weekend in which she plays Emma Frost. I’m sorry but how can anyone stand to watch her week in and week out? She is a TERRIBLE actress; basically ruined one of my favorite characters.

  • MandyM

This looks very much like my Halloween costume, a chick from the 80’s. The right styling would have taken this straight to Tiffany or Debbie Gibson.
