Jake Gyllenhaal for GQ Australia Magazine

Posted on October 24, 2013

After that rather alarming appearance of his on the red carpet earlier this week, we think we could all use a reminder of cute, bearded, not-hungry Jake:

Jake Gyllenhaal covers the November 2013 issue of GQ Australia magazine photographed by Nino Muñoz.

On his career/movies: “These movies are markers on my path and life. We all have them in different ways. Mine are a little absurd and happen to be movies, but all I have is the experience of those movies and they’ve all been extraordinary in their own way.”

On his sister Maggie: “You watch your older sibling and you look up to them, and she was acting, and performing, and I loved that. Like, if I would do something that was funny, I could feel that response and I liked that response. By nature, children are performers in a way, and that was encouraged.”

On his family: “[My parents] knew the business and really wanted me to get an education. They believed that if I wanted it enough, and it was really something I had a desire to do, then I had plenty of time to do it. They were of the thinking that there’s really only one time in your life when you can go to school, and have that experience. So I’m grateful to them.”

Jesus, this is a GQ editorial? A white t-shirt and a blue t-shirt? Riveting.

He seems like a nice, well-adjusted guy. Which is probably why he’s not a bigger star.

    I think he is cute.

  • Jackie4g

You’re right! Besides being “eat him with a spoon” adorable, he sounds grounded and normal. Quite the unusual combo.

  • PastryGoddess

    I’ll take it.

I hated the beard at first, but if going to look like a starved artist without it, then bring on the beard

  • boweryboy

I get the attraction, but he does nothing for me.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Whenever I read an interview that says nothing, I always think of Tim Robbins’ character in “Bull Durham”.

    • Judy_S

      That’s a lot of Bull Durham…

    • mshesterp

Man, I feel that way about most celeb interviews…this at least didn’t make me want to punch him in the face.

    • random_poster

Exactly. I read his responses twice to see if I could figure them out. In the end I decided I just don’t care enough.

  • StellaZafella

He does everything for me because he seems like a man I want to spend chilly Sunday afternoons just talking to…about anything…on the sofa…with our legs entwined…sorry, you were saying?

    • mshesterp

That cover shot! Unfortunately I’ll have to knock you off the sofa to get next to him. All apologies!

      The beard is just delicious.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I like the way you think.

  • hughman

Handsome, but man he looks like a lot of work.

“Jake, can you hand me that cup of coffee?”
“You know these beans are harvested by people who make mere dollars a day.”
“Um, yeah. I just want some coffee.”
    “Do you need coffee? Really?”
“Yeah, I do. Just hand me the coffee or I’m gonna kick you in the giblets. Got it?”

    • StellaZafella

“Did you know giblets are high in protein…and they’re extremely sensitive this morning?”

      • hughman

“Unless you hand me the fucking coffee, you’ll never feel those giblets again. Capiche?

        • Rand Ortega

The LA Cabaret circuit needs you 2!

        • StellaZafella

“One cup of forced labor coffee comin’ right up, luv. (and my giblets are safe for another day…till this bitch asks me to pass the buns.)”

          • hughman

“Oh for fuck’s sake. Don’t make me go all Taylor Swift on your ass.”

          • StellaZafella

“Sing me the one about that Mayer guy again…you know, the literate one. The one about ‘ain’t nevahevahsomthin’somthingettin’backtogether.’..how’s your coffee?”

          • Imasewsure

I thought that song was about our beloved Jake? Can’t keep up

          • StellaZafella

            That’s the point…;)

          • NYCGlamourpuss

I love you both SO much!

          • StellaZafella

            And we love you, too!

          • Alloy Jane

He dated Taylor Swift? Well that killed it for me :-p

  • Ginger

Some guys need nothing more than a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Jake is one of those men. Maybe it’s the beard…

  • homofascist

    Sausage Friday came early! Hallelujah…

  • KinoEye

Donnie Darko was one of my favorites as a teenager, so I’ll always have a soft spot for Jake. I’m just happy to see him looking healthy — the clothes matter not. Hope he gets back to his normal weight sooner rather than later.

  • NMMagpie

No problem here, no matter what he wears. Blue eyes and dark hair are always all right in my book.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’ve often thought that I should have a bumper sticker that reads “I brake for blue eyes”….

      • NMMagpie

        I love you madly!

  • Winter_White

His mom wrote the screenplay for Running on Empty — does anyone remember that movie? The most gorgeous performances by River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton … So I keep waiting for her to write something fantastic for one or both of her kids. I’d love to see him and Maggie as co-stars.

    • Sarah

Oh yeah, that was a kick-ass movie. I loved it. I didn’t know that! She should totally write for the kids.

    • charlotte

It’s funny that you say that because everyone seems to mention Goonies when Martha shows up. I always think of “Running on Empty” and how much I love that movie. Actually it just happened again today.

    • AnguaVonUberwald

One of my favorites! I had such a crush on River Phoenix, and I loved/hated Martha Plimpton for that reason. Christine Lahti is also amazing in that movie.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Ah. I love that movie! I loved River, deeply. Funny you should bring that movie up, it’s been playing on one the premium movie channels lately, that and Little Nikita, I watched them both, then drug out my Mosquito Coast dvd, just to have a River Sunday.

    • fursa_saida

Sorry if this is really redundant, but they did co-star as siblingsin Donnie Darko. (Which is a weird-ass cult classic that you may not like–I love it, but I can understand why someone wouldn’t–but it happened.)

      • Winter_White

Thanks. I did see DD when it first came out (2001, Google informs me) — but had forgotten she was in it! I know that was the first time I’d seen Jake…didn’t really notice Maggie until Sherrybaby.

  • holzfaellen

    Fabulous hair!

  • NOLA_gal

    Umm… yowza. I don’t give a tinker’s cuss what he’s wearing. WOW.

  • marlie

DAYUM he’s hot here. I skit even mind the jeans and plain tshirt.

  • CeeQ

  • jilly_d

God, if I ever actually met him in person, I would probably forget how to say words. DEM EYES, they make me stoopid.

  • NoveltyRocker

Smokin’ hottie. Boy or girl, a good t-shirt is all it takes sometimes.

  • Chase

I don’t care how big his biceps are, or how thick his beard. He will always look like a kid to me.

  • Trickytrisha

Whew, thank goodness for this reminder. He looks 20 years younger than the last pics.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Jake looks good in the darker shirt. Why put a man in a white shirt on the cover?

He is not a leading man type, IMO. But I don’t see Bradley Cooper as a leading man either. I think Maggie Gyllenhaal is fabulous and under-rated.

    • fursa_saida

I recently watched a movie starring her and Hugh Dancy called Hysteria and I fell in love with her completely. If you’re a fan and you haven’t seen it you should check it out! (It’s a historical–and I use the term loosely–rom-com about the invention of the vibrator. Bonus Rupert Everett!)

      • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I will check out Hysteria. I liked a movie called Mona Lisa Smile. That’s a bit of a dumb name for the movie that I didn’t love until I watched it the second time. I love the clothes in the movie mostly. They aren’t outrageous, but they’re a subtle part of the story that takes place in a 1950s women’s college. It’s a Julia Roberts movie but the younger women who are supporting actors give the story more flavor, and these are Julia Stiles, Kirsten Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Maggie Gyllenhaal (who plays a very kind young woman who is unapologetic about enjoying sex during a time when young women were beginning to question many aspects about equality between the sexes). I liked Maggie’s part because she was the promiscuous one of the group, and she wasn’t evil or stupid.

        • ashtangajunkie

I love that movie too, especially Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ginnifer Goodwin’s characters. It’s one I watch again and again.

          • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I have it recorded, and I’ve watched it several times as well. Marcia Gay Harden is great as well. All those ladies wear their clothes so well. I love Julia Stiles in her jackets. I think all those actresses can be stunning in the right hair and makeup, or they can look just okay, depending on who styles them.

        • fursa_saida

Good to hear that–the impression I’d gotten was that it was mostly fluff. Her character in Hysteria is a vehement feminist who is never grating, as so many movies try to portray such women. Also she’s just lightheartedly adorable in this role.

          • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I was able to find Hysteria on cable in a week or so. Thanks.

Off-topic – but the “Lounge” is open for All-Stars in the Alyssa Milano post!

  • forward_slash_PRS

Debbie Gibson: lost in your eyes
Annie Oakley: lost in his arms
forward_slash_PRS: lost in Jake’s hairy forearms

US GQ has gone the “Jesus, this is a GQ editorial” path several times in the past that I kind of forgive AUS GQ for doing the same. I do wish they did more with him, though. His only outfit change consists of swapping a white T with a blue one.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

So hot. I would totally hit it.

  • Mia Moreno

HOT Love the beard on him.

  • MoreShoes

White T-shirt, blue T-shirt…I don’t care, as long it’s Jake in them.

  • ashtangajunkie

I like him, especially with a beard and when he’s had something to eat.

  • imakeart

  • quitasarah

    So. Dreamy. Siiiiiighhhhhhh…

  • Ashleigh

    surprisingly short in person…

  • Jacob Bowen

Please tell me that T-Shirt comes off because I see a MAN chest under there!

  • rcarterx

Recently I was really, really low on money and debts were eating me from all sides! That was UNTIL I decided to make money on the internet. I went to surveymoneymaker dot net, and started filling in surveys for cash, and surely I’ve been far more able to pay my bills!! I’m so glad, I did this.. With all the financial stress these years, I really hope all of you will give it a chance. – ic5W
