IN or OUT: Sarah Michelle Gellar on David Letterman

Posted on October 02, 2013

Do we like this, kittens? We can’t tell.

Sarah Michelle Gellar makes an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman” in New York City.

We like the white and the bronze together, but that’s one hell of a big, ruffly metallic peplum. And to be honest, we’re not loving her hair here. Sure, it’s a head-turning look that probably looked pretty great on camera, but it’s all so … of a theme, no? Like she’s a hostess at a car show or something? Honestly, the only reason we’re not trashing it outright is because we love the color combo.

Vote Now!

IN! It’s bold and eye-catching!

OUT! It looks like she should be handing out gum samples on a street corner!

The minions with opinions were not in love with Morgan Saylor’s clean face and see-thru dress, voting it OUT.

  • Emily Dagger

I so miss when she was a brunette.

    • 1tsplove

Exactly! The real abomination here is her hair color! First of all, I can’t stand this whole, letting your natural color show thing–pick a color and stick with it! Secondly, that shade of blonde is doing her no favors/just makes her look washed out!

      • Constant Reader

That awful shade of blonde is a crime against her very pretty face.

        • ConnieBV

And it AGES her. Good Lord, woman, Slap your hair gay. In the balls.

  • Lily

OUT. NOOOOOPE. That peplum is hideous and the earrings are all wrong for this. Would it have been better if it were a two-piece and the skirt with that metallic with no peplum?

    • wisdomy

      Much, muuuuuuuuuch better.

  • yulaffin

In, with reservations. I would like a little less ruffle with the peplum. Otherwise, I think she looks great.

  • Jonika Tannous

it looks like she ripped some nasty drapes and tied them around her waste. OUT.

    • The 80’s “Gone With the Wind”. “Frankie, my dear, says “Relax!”.”

      • filmcricket

        Slow clap.

  • I’d like it if the peplum were more tailored-looking and less like a Country Kitchen Cafe Curtain. This looks like she’s hiding a baby bump.

  • acevedob

OUT! It looks like she should be handing out gum samples on a street corner!

    • 3boysful

What is it about peplums that they more often than not just look cheesy?

  • msdamselfly

    ditch the peblum

  • schadenfreudelicious

That’s peplum looks like it was snatched off a bridesmaid’s dress and tacked on…she also appears to have the DTM shoes….the hair is awful too…OUT

  • OUT. Because, peplums.
I think that hair color is not her friend. It is doing very unflattering things to her lovely face.

    • terpsichory

I don’t know. I kinda like the idea of the hair, just not the execution.

I think she can work the blonde, but those upper highlights look too ‘streaky’, if you know what I mean.
But the peplum is evil. No arguments there.

  • lalahartma

    Out! Just, no.

  • Synnae

OUT – or at least the peplum is OUT. Rest of the dress, shoes, make-up and hair is all IN.

    • mlle

      Yup, this.

  • crash1212

IN-ish or OUT-ish…you decide. I know it would just be a pretty white dress without that horrific peplum, but I would’ve preferred that honestly. I love the hair and make-up. And I love the white with the bronze. It’s the peplum…it’s killing me. Not in a good way.

  • decormaven

So very out. And while Dave’s backdrop for the stars is never the best place for a snapshot, her hair coloring/makeup look aging. Bless her- I watched a bit of the new show. The dynamics are not working for me, and that’s even with special Bob Benson awesome sauce added in.

    • sagecreek

Yeah, the whole show tends to lean on Robin Williams’ manic-ness, and I think we are all over that.

      • decormaven

Yes, I feel the cast is getting sucked into that manic vibe. It gives the show a jittery effect.

      • AnguaVonUberwald

Now, I thought it worked pretty well, since they all played it like everybody in the company is over his manic-ness, except for the new girl. I only watched the premiere, and it could dissolve into Robin Williams grimacing for a half hour in the coming shows, but I enjoyed it.

        • sagecreek

          I hope you are right!

          • decormaven

I hope you are right as well. It is hard with Robin Williams- I’m trying to get past my expectations of his manic-ness. He can hit all the emotion pedals; careful directing and a strong cast (which is in place) will bring this out. I like SMG and want this show to pan out for her.

      • Shawn EH

I think even HE’S over that. Time for a new schtick. But he can do drama, and I expect some of that will be coming up, as weird as that is for a half-hour sitcom. Well, Rosanne could do it.

  • Missy

OUT. Honey, you are wearing a dust ruffle around your midsection.

  • hughman

“Even though she was now a nurse, she could never let go of her childhood dream of being a dancer in the ballet.”

  • JMB_edits

I love Buffy, but hate this look (agree on the color combo tho.) and her hair here

  • Imasewsure

OUT hair… out dress. but do love those shoes… still OUT

  • AlisonS

In ’cause it’s Buffy. (Although I do think the hair ages her face. Then again she’s been 22 on my TV for like 10 years.)

  • Blair Sylvester

They always say match your shoes to your peplum

  • Erica_Vuitton

OUT sorry SMG that peplum is just too too and… also very tutu.

ETA: does anyone know how to set your Disqus settings to show newest first vs always showing oldest? No matter how many times I change it on each page it ALWAYS re-sets to oldest first….

    • Lilithcat

      RE: your ETA

I don’t think it’s possible. Frankly, that drives me up the wall, too. One of the many reasons I loathe Disqus.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Without the peplum it’s just a simple white sheath dress. That peplum, however, looks as if a PR design sewed it on at the last minute in desperation. OUT.

    • raeb23

And a simple white sheath with those bronze shoes would’ve looked great…but that peplum is way too curtainy! Out.

  • MilaXX

OUT! I like the white and bronze, but that peplum hits in a very weird place and is just not flattering.

  • poggi

I want those shoes. I mean really.

  • marishka1

Mixed. Love the color of the shoes. Love the color combination. If the earrings had a smitch more of the coppery/bronze in them, perfect. Almost would have rather seen a simple white sheath. The peplum must go.

  • OUT – you can’t match your shoes to your peplum.

  • MarissaLG

So, So out. It looks incredibly tacky and too plain and ick.

  • Chaiaiai

DAMN. That’s a Kendall Hart outfit eating SMG alive. OUT.

  • poggi

I wouldn’t think a peplum would make someone look blocky, but this one does. Maybe it’s hitting her a little high IR it’s not fitted enough in the waist. I also don’t like the shoes and peplum matching.

  • ChaCha_70

    Out. Peplums must die.

  • Laura Renee

Reminds me of your recent post about dressing like an Oscar trophy….

  • Jerrica, you forgot to say, “Showtime, Synergy!” (Shoes are killer, rip off that metallic, made for a lesser Hologram thing that defies peplum and veers into tutu territory.)

Out. Shoes should never match the peplum, particularly when it looks like a scrunched up car door.

  • Vickiefantastico

As an ardent Buffy fan who cannot, simply cannot, vote OUT, I will abstain from today’s vote, gentlemen.

  • Adrianna Grężak

    Out, looks cheap!

  • Lori

OUT. The peplum is ridiculous and I don’t like the hair.

  • up with pod people

Only if the entire upper half was bronze, and then with reservations.

  • Bobbi

Out! That peplum is absolutely hideous.

  • Good grief! OUT.

This looks like a plain white dress with an ill-fitting peplum slapped on. Ouch.

  • AzSportsGirl

OUT! If the dress had a mid-section panel of that bronze material acting almost as a huge belt — total WERQ – well except for the hair which doesn’t play well with others.. namely her complexion.

  • Chevalle

I don’t even notice the dress. I look at her and think “DAMN she looks good!” As a child of the 90’s, SMG and Buffy were the staples of my adolescence, and she just looks beautiful 🙂

  • Lola Channing

she looks like she worked as a secretary, a waitress and a dance teacher – all in high school.

  • Rhonda Shore

Oddly i don’t have a strong opinion on this.

  • Stella Zawistowski

  • catherines

Out! (despite my love of the shoes)

  • tereliz

Oh. Hmm. Out. Sorry, Sarah. Love the shoes. And your face looks fab!

  • JulieK

That peplum is awful. Everything else is ok. But OUT on the strength of that peplum alone.

  • PastryGoddess

We love those shoes, We do not love that peplum

  • mmebam

She matched the shoes to the peplum. And then the peplum is too big. And then the bronze is so awkward looking. And then her hair looks like Country Sue. Go home and try again. #Out

  • bailey

the shoes are cute, but the dress is horrid. out

  • mjude

  • JulieTy

Project Runway “Be inspired by our accessories wall” challenge (middle of the pack).

  • Jacqueline Wessel

OUT…but when she was sitting down it was kinda IN.

  • june1920

Nope, OUT. She looks like a napkin and napkin ring.

  • marlie

OUT. I saw this on her on tv and it looked awful – even my boyfriend hated it.

The practice of slapping a peplum on everything needs to stop.

  • Janet B

    So much to dislike: OUT

  • Sandisan

    OUT. Out, damn spot.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Replace the peplum with a bronze colored belt and this would have been more acceptable. I also like the color combo (and I’m not usually a bronze fan), but that peplum is just too hiddy. Out!

  • MissFern

we don’t like it, dears. we don’t.

  • filmcricket

    That peplum is wretched. Out.

  • carpediva

    Intergalactic stewardess. OUT.

  • Lilithcat

Out. Mostly because I misread the subject line as “Sarah Michelle Gellar in David Letterman”!

And also because I hate the shiny metal ruffly peplum and can’t believe she found shoes that exactly match it.

  • Lori

Nothing to see here. Disqus sucks.

  • Trisha26

OUT. It’s a peplum. It’s a copper peplum. The shoes match the peplum. YIKES!

  • Kristina Sadowski

OUT. It looks like a metallic tablecloth hitched a ride with her skirt.

  • KayEmWhy

I was never a fan. The complete look OUT!

  • Tatiana Luján

In, because she looks great in white and I love the shoes, but that peplum is hideous.

  • E. D.

Out, that peplum is so terrible, it’s turrible.

  • It’s… ok? I feel like I should hate it, but can’t be bothered.

    • Looks OK to me, except those heels aren’t so good for chasing vampires in.

  • MartyBellerMask

  • Jenna Marie

    Out. That’s not a peplum – it’s a tutu.

  • Jeanne leCube

Where are her eyebrows? She needs a brow pencil stat!

  • Sunshine16

Tear off that atrocious ruffle & we’d be in business. With it – OUT

  • surfergirl70

Take away that ridiculous peplum and it’s a great look. As is, it’s tacky looking. OUT.

  • Darcy H

I canNOT with the matching of the shoes to the peplum. If she was wearing the simple white dress with those shoes and some killer accessories, then we could talk.

  • JauntyJohn

“Peplum” always sounds to me like a medical term for something in the lady parts.
IN – but she’s sliding in on good will from past merits.

  • Cubana Loca

This looks like something Ivana Trump would wear. Rich matron outfit. She might be rich, but she isn’t a matron. It’s so aging.

  • Ronni H.

If the peplum wasn’t as big it wouldn’t be as bad. It’s an in, but it could be better. I think the peplum is a skosh out of proportion

  • SorayaS

OUT- I think I’ve seen her look good with blonde hair on occasion but this looks awful. The white washes her out, the peplum looks cheap and the shoes are so matchy as to be costumey. Go home and try again, SMG.

  • boweryboy

Peplums are offensive enough, but to match your shoes to your peplum pushes it into the offensive fashion stratosphere.

  • Randy Noak

Out. She doesn’t look great in white and peplums are so two thousand and late.

  • trisker

In, I say — but I see I’m in the minority. The peplum is kicky.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Out. I hate the peplum with a seething, purple passion. The hair is terribly unflattering. The color combo is good, and I really like the shoes, but that peplum is giving me rage.

  • sagecreek

Meh. I don’t love it, but she wears it well, so I can’t call it an out. IN.

  • Lisa_Co

Hideous bronze satin peplum with matching bronze shoes? Ick. OUT.

  • capybara_cafe

That peplum has entered dust ruffle territory. No, we do not like it.

  • ringthing

OUT. A thousand times, and while she looks bad she will forever be out to me because she was so needlessly and relentlessly screechy and annoying on Letterman last night that I wanted to choke her.

  • Brittany

I’m with you on the colour combo and therefore give it an IN. Something about the hair looks a little harsh, but her makeup works.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

OUT – that hair is for a teenager and that peplum – ugh

  • Jacquelyn

One does not say OUT to Buffy. It’s not my favorite look but I grew up watching her kill vampires and be a hero. Have to say IN.

  • aeb1986

  • LaSylphide

That is soooo out. That is beyond out. That is O, U, T, OUT!

  • StelledelMare

Oh Buffy, no. Out. Also, for a second in the preview image on the main page I could’ve sworn she was Patti Lupone.

  • melanie0866

OUT, because of our general dislike of peplums.

Love the shoes. Wish I had them.

  • housefulofboys

It’s flattering, and I also like the color combo. But, no. No. Too much peplum (and satin at that!) and too many blond sausage curls.

  • EKW2

    N to the O.

  • Kelly

Eh, I don’t know. I kinda liked it at first — great color combo, as you say, and there’s a chic line there under the peplum — but the more I look. . .no. It’s too short, the shoes are too shiny/matchy, and the overall effect is ultimately too cocktail-waitressy. I found myself expecting her to stick her pen and an order-pad in a peplum pocket. So, out.

  • sunflower

    Oh no! OUT

  • ThaliaMenninger

She isn’t good this blonde, and that peplum… I’m having 80s peplum flashbacks and NOT LIKING IT.

  • somebody blonde

OUT! Everything here is bad, from hair to peplum.

  • quiltrx

I’m going to stay neutral on this one. It looks a little cheap in the light of day, but I bet it looked a lot better on camera.

  • Snailstsichr

Oh, OUT. It looks like someone tried to make a dress out of a wife-beater.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. It’d be a no brainer “in” if the ruffly peplum weren’t so garish.

  • Pterodactyl111

OUT. I HATE HATE HATE that peplum with a burning fury. Drop that, and it would be in.

  • OUT. Boring and tacky. And I hate her hair. Such a cute girl, what a waste.

  • ThesisMonkey

OUT. her expression says out. and peplum.

  • kim bunchalastnames

well, we don’t like the shiny pink dust ruffle or the matchy shoes.

  • Rachael

NO!!! Why on earth would you wear shoes the same color as your awful lame waist ruffle (I refuse to call it a peplum because I love peplum and that is horrendous)!!

  • conniemd

Out. Waaayyyyyyy too much Peplum, though I do like the Bronze and white.

  • fringebenefit

OUT. She looks stunning…from the neck up. The dress and shoes are wretched.

  • MandyM

Out. Love the color and her hair is pretty but the shape is awful!

  • another_laura

O to the UT. Peplums are the work of Satan and that is a particularly ugly one. And this post is the straw that broke this camel’s back on white dresses.

  • macwell

OOOOUUUUUUTTTTTTTT!!!!!!! OMG – make it stop!

  • VioletFem

    NO. Too much peplum.

  • paintedfish

    yeah. no on the peplum.

  • chylde

In! Fresh faced and funky little monkey!

  • Beth513

No, just no, no and no. OUT.

  • MoHub

I was doing fine until I scrolled down to the peplum.

  • nyll18

Out. The bronze peplum detracts instead of enhances her figure.

  • Jangle57

No, just no. Remove the peplum and yeah, it would be pretty plain but I’d still like it better. OUT

  • majorbedhead

Nope. Sorry, Buffy. I so want you to succeed in this new show because, oh dear god, Ringer was bad, but I don’t have high hopes for this one either.

    OUT. Please don’t slay me.

  • Mudskipper

Oh, no. OUT. This is horrible peplum, color combination doesn’t save it.

  • martha

  • it’s more than a little ridiculous, but somehow I like it. Admittedly I am part magpie so the metallic really attracts my eye, and I do love those simple but wonderful shoes. I’ll probably be in the minority, but I’m going with IN on this one.

  • lizajane1776

Out. Too much peplum. Too much bottle blonde.

  • Out. No, no, no, no.

  • altalinda

    Ugh, no a clear out.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

No to the outfit and a big NO to the hair color. She shouldn’t be that blonde!

  • Reality TV Casting

    out out

  • ankali

OUT. So OUT. That peplum is awful.

Her face looks pretty great, though.

  • flamingoNW

The shoes make it out for me.

  • lesmaha

  • demidaemon

I can tell. That is one of the most–if not THE most–hideous peplums I have ever seen. And she matched her shoes to it! OUT!

  • Maya

  • steeg of their own

OUT. The makeup and hair make her look mid-fifties, which is a huge no. As to the dress itself, that metallic ruffle is just not working. I’m pretty sure there’s not a woman alive who could make that thing work. SMG deserves better.

  • Samuel Joesph Donovan

Who cares about little nitpicky things? Buffy’s back, bitches.

  • kathrineb

Yikes this is not cute. The hair, jewelry and colors are so frumpy and aging! Mother of the bride Sarah Michelle Geller!

  • Lize Hartley

This is horrible. RAUS! [That’s “out” in German. Much more scary].

  • Claudia

  • altissima

Her face looks very pretty, but bleah to everything else. Out.

  • Aurumgirl

I now fully understand the “matchy” hate.

  • MannahattaMamma

She got stuck in a bronze swimming ring & couldn’t get out. Plus the expression on her face suggests that maybe she’s not so crazy about a hip-ruffle either. Plus matchymatch shoes? Yikes. I’d say something about a midwestern mall rat but that would be mean.

    • deflated swimming ring… definitely! without that thing I think it would look fine, then the shoes would have been alright as well.

  • StarburstLady

I like it well enough, although the fabric on that peplum looks kind of cheap to me… but I think she generally looks good. IN.

  • Sam Erin

Love the color combo but looks a little “bride at rehearsal dinner for her chicago wedding” to me. No?
Definitely agree with @emilydagger:disqus , would have been great to see on a brunette

  • Lidia Starkova

Peplum looks too DIY to me. There are so many ways to do detailing with this color combo.

  • blondie65

Out…love the color combo but I am over, over, over peplums…

  • JoDo11

Wouldn’t this look terrible sitting down? Out.

  • Candigirl1968

IN – as a great baby/bridal shower outfit. Hair would have been fresher if it was in a ponytail (with sides done like they are here).

  • Epidan

In, only because I can never say that my beloved Buffy is Out. I don’t love the dress, but do think she looks lovely overall. But then again, she is BUFFY.

  • hellkell

It did not look good on camera. It stinks of Dynasty and desperation.

  • Coleen

OUT because of the peplum. I would knock over the dumpster for a chance at those shoes, though.

  • iheartbuffy

frankly, this is the first I’ve seen her look like herself (peroxide job and all) in a while

  • NBG

OUT. And she needs to fire whatever hair person convinced her that to go that shade of blonde. It’s aging and washing her out BIG time.

  • TropiCarla

That peplum must die by fire. I do love those shoes with that white dress though. Switch out the peplum for a belt and it would be a big in.

  • jesuiskate

    Yikes. Not a fan. Out!

  • The fru-fru should be white and less voluminous. Digging the shoes though.

  • jw_ny

Ditch the peplum and go back to being a brunette! She’s looking rather Stepford-ish.

  • Jennifer Ford

Overall she looks good, but that peplum is insane. Still, I can’t vote Buffy down unless she’s a complete mess, so: IN

  • Sara__B

Out. The peplum is silly and the hair is all wrong.

  • H2olovngrl

I like this. The shoes matching the peplum make me smile, so, in!

  • RussellH88

Definitely out. The peplum doesn’t add anything, and the material looks kind of cheap.

Plus, she’s not really selling it. She looks like she wants to turn and run away,

  • Cathy S

That peplum is terrible. So ugly. Too bad because the rest of the dress looks good on her.

  • Danielle

The peplum should be taken out back and put out of it’s misery.

  • mrssage

Out. I can’t imagine how exactly matching your dress and shoes ever looks good.

  • Adina Miller Holmes

Noooooo! No, no, bad! I agree that the colors are gorgeous (and I kinda love those shoes), but peplum is an abomination.

  • keaglin

Not loving the shoes, but the color combo is interesting. Sorta in?

  • Bernadette

That peplum has to go! I like the shoes with a plan white dress and some jewelry.

  • anotherkate

Out. The peplums, they tire me. And I don’t like the matchiness overall.

  • gubblebumm

So I am looking at the area below the peplum. Can’t tell if she has a wee belly, which is fine, but is the peplum supposed to hide it? The way the dress is cut its hard to tell…

  • jen

Yuck, Out! That ruffle ruined everything.

  • jjtxgrrl

Out. And why is she making such a weird face?

  • valerie747

    Tutu much!

  • Jennifer McGuire

    So very OUT.

  • Shawn EH

In. SMG deserves her moment right now. It’s a little brittle, but still strong.

  • Danielle West

  • Crassy

Ditch the shoes and she’s fine.

  • ItsDicey

O-U-T. The peplum is an abomination for sure, but the hair (and color) are even worse.

  • Lily-Rygh

OUT. That peplum is obnoxious and the shoes are too matchy with it.

  • Dreamwr8tr

I do not like Buffy’s color treatment. It makes her hair being pulled back look harsh. And the peplum is just too big — because it dominates her frame whenever she’s not three-quarters to the camera. It looks awkward even though she’s tiny. I just want to rip that peplum off.

  • gracedarling

OUT. That is possibly the worst deployment of a peplum I have ever seen. What’s the point of it other than to look like she got stuck jumping through a ruffle copper hoop?

  • Shade

The hair is too Buffy and her dress looks like she pulled on her daughter’s tutu on the way out the door. OUT.

  • swanpride

    Die peplums! Die!
Out!!!!!! This would look so much better as a simple white dress with some decent accents set in bronze. And I don’t dig her hair…makes her look old, somehow.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out. Even though the bronze and white is a very nice combination, the matchiness of the peplum and shoes just makes the peplum look even more out of place somehow.

  • alaskahyoung

Hate the peplum, hate the hair. She can send me the shoes, though.

  • I think she looks great. I suspect this will be a minority view.

  • VicD

  • jeanmarie

    Out… burn all the peplums.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties
