IN or OUT: Rita Wilson in Tom Ford at the “Captain Phillips” Premiere

Posted on October 10, 2013

This one couldn’t be any simpler, kittens.

Rita Wilson attends the premiere of “Captain Phillips” during the 2013 BFI London Film Festival in Tom Ford.

Tom Ford Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Soo Joo Park

Either it works for you, or it doesn’t. We’re split down the middle; one of us thinking it’s bold and fun, the other one thinking it’s a little tacky and not quite age-appropriate. Kittens make the call.

I love the dress, but the pulled back hair doesn’t really work.

    • ErmengardeGreen

  • decormaven

Out. The graphic on the hip cries out for a “BAM” or “KA- POW” to accompany it.

    • RussellH88

I was thinking the same thing.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        Yup. Same here.

    • MartyBellerMask

Yes, this. Except, that’s a plus for me 😉

      • MilaXX

        Except she’s not giving a Ka-Pow attitude.

        • MartyBellerMask

          Excellent point.

    • MoHub

Exactly. It looks as if her left hip is undergoing a comic-book explosion.

      • mlle

You beat me to it! I was going to say that she’s wearing a sequined comic book explosion.

    • bellafigura1

I think that’s the good part! My quibble is with the sleeve — I’d like to see them tighter or sheerer or stopped above the elbow. A little bit of skin to break up the black. Anyhow, I love her pretty face and the hair, too.

      • amf0001

I agree 100% about the sleeve but I don’t love her hair, I want more movement in it, to go with the energy at her hip, and I want earrings, all the glitter (those bracelets!) is at thigh level, I want something drawing your eyes back to her face

    • Jangle57

Thank you for putting into words what I was thinking! OUT

    • surfergirl70

The Fug Girls described it as Batman v. Menopause, which I thought was perfect.

    • Lily-Rygh

Exactly. It looks like someone threw a comic book at her hip and it exploded on her. OUT.

  • Maluca

I don’t hate the dress but it doesn’t flatter her at all. Out.

    • rockin robin

  • estella_nyc

I can’t get over her makeup – the mascara is mascary.

The dress makes her blend in with the background, resulting in her looking like a floating head above a cartoon drawing. For that reason, I say out.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I love this post simply because we now have a new word for clumpy eyelashes – “mascary”! That’s awesome!

      • estella_nyc

        🙂 Glad to help out!

    • SugarSnap108

Exactly. I can’t form an opinion on the dress because I can’t see past the “mascary.”

  • Danielle

I think it’s fun, but the hair is bringing it down. Thanks for not opting for the visible nipples.

  • DaringMiss

I am sure it is a lovely dress in person, but without a step and repeat backdrop, she disappears and the dress looks shapeless.

I like the dress, but it seems overly mature on her — suitable for an octogenarian. I think that something a little more shaped would have served her better.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

IN – It’s fun and youthful, but not in a “wow, I’m trying really hard to prove something,” sort of way.

  • Lily

Out. Not because of the dress, but because it fits so poorly. And also because this dress needs some killer accessorizing/hair/makeup.

  • mjude

  • vickilu

I dunno, that clutch is really fighting the dress. Out

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Oh hell, that is flipping FUN. I wish she’d done something with her hair but it gets an IN from me anyway.

    • LondonMarriott

Agreed! However, I want to move the POW up to waist level. It’s too low and making me itchy. Bonus, then she wouldn’t have to sit on it.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I actually don’t know… she looks pretty good. The dress is kind of cool. The shoes aren’t great but I can forgive. This is hard for me. I’d say IN for being sort of unexpected. I’d say OUT because she doesn’t look like she’s having all that much fun with it. Not sure her skin tone – or at least the way her hair and make up are done is really strong enough for the dress.

  • stellamaris73

Kudos to her for keeping her girls covered (which the poor model could not do), but I can see her Spanx showing through. Although this is clearly going for the “Pow!” factor, the overall look is sadly drab.

  • claudemtl777

you are both right in this case, it certainly is all 4 qualifiers you cited. the decider as for in or out is “is it venue appropriate”?Husband”s movie premiere…?? IN!!

  • Michael_Jones

OUT. Like decormaven, I also want “KA-POW” written on that graphic.

  • mhlmh

    IN. bold and fun.

    • Clueless_Jock

Tom Ford reinvented Halston and Geoffrey Beene for modern Hollywood. I love it.

  • Meredith_P

IN! While she’s a lovely woman, she often doesn’t make a success of her RC appearances. So, in that vein, this is not bad.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Interesting hip placement, I think she looks fab.

  • GorgeousThings

Marginally IN. At least she’s not trying to show too much boob/thigh/butt/whatever.
But the totally mismatched face-to-neck makeup puts it on the verge of OUT

    • Snailstsichr

You said what I was thinking – marginal in from me, too. and, I like her jewelry.

  • Ron Zank

Unlike the model, Rita has a beautiful, shapely body that this dress does not show well. Better fit or bag it.

  • Bexxx

In because she’s a prize. Get em Rita. Love it.

  • H2olovngrl

She gets it wrong so often that I think a little positive reinforcement is called for here. She looks cute, it fits her well, yet still has the quirkiness she clearly likes. IN!

  • rebeemoon

IN. She’s allowed to emphasize the youth inside her every once in a while. And look at that: There’s enough to splash onto a big ol’ star.

  • schadenfreudelicious

It’s interesting but just doesn’t work on her… I also have a strong dislike for those mini peep toe shoes, either peep or don’t…OUT

  • OUT

  • Boulderista

In – though I think she could have used a bold necklace or earrings to balance the hip motif.

  • deliadee

Out. The dress covers her up too much and makes her look shapeless. Love the graphic, agreed it needs a ZOWIE printed above.

  • Diego!

OUT. It’s not working in my opinion…

  • I’m loving it, myself.

    • conniemd

I feel much better. I felt kinda dumb reading all the hates and thought I must be out of my mind to love this on her. But your opinion I respect so much, that it made me feel not crazy.

  • lobsterlen

In … not an IN!!! But an in. I wish she had done something different with her hair and something is off about the size or the tailoring. I have a feeling the dress is making look bigger than what she is.

  • Janet B

The perfect dress for someone less curvy. Rita deserves better.

    • MilaXX

See I think it’s better on someone with curves. I think it’s a hair too lose on Rita.

      • SugarSnap108

It’s hard to tell with the background, but I do think it’s too big on her. Yep, this dress needs a perfect fit AND some curves to work, methinks.

  • Tacky and not age appropriate. Although I’m happy she wore the lined version…

    • MilaXX

It’s not lined, she’s wearing a body shaper underneath.

      • That’s fine, too. As long as I don’t have to see the girls I’m okay.

  • Theresa

OUT! She is so much prettier than this look is giving her, and it is doing zero for her shape.

  • Catiline

I think the hip graphic is a little crazy-awesome, but the hair and makeup are frumpsville. This is a really painful OUT.

  • manina

She looks great, She is IN. The dress, on the other hand, even though it looks good on her, is stupid, the dress is OUT. There is not a lot of “design”, just a black dress with a tacky ¨apliqué”.

  • Danielle

  • veronkimo

OUT! The dress is sort of interesting on the model who is a size nothing. But those arms are crazy unflattering on this lady! Also the placement of the pow just makes her look bigger. She doesn’t look like she has a defined waist. Sorry, gal!

  • amyfromnj

    Fug. Too Captain America.

  • veriance

I can see her spanx. OUT

  • Michelle Gennari

Love it! Interesting that she hasn’t had any “work” done. I like that. She’s very real!

  • MartyBellerMask

IN. But I hate the shoes.

  • aeb1986

Out. I like the dress but not in this case.

  • Garcia Loca

Love it on her. Love Rita. Just love.
P.S. I’m getting the KAPOW! theme, considering she’s going to need that energy helping Tom with his diabetes.

  • EveEve

IN! If you mean she’s too old, tsk, nothing age inappropriate about an opaque full length black floaty gown with long sleeves and jewel neckline. Maybe you mean she’s too young for it? It does kind of age her. Oh, you must mean the Lichtenstein-esque “POW”! sequinned embellishment? Well, that’s just retro-Pop fun. So, yeah, in. But honey, get a new hairdresser.

  • BayTampaBay

OUT! The dress does not seem to fit her and is boring, leaning heavily toward tacky, to begin with.

  • Chantry Banks

I really like it. And it looks like she feels so good in it. She’s pulling it off, IN!

  • MilaXX

OUT – Again I think it’s styling. I don’t like the hair, the makeup, or the shoes. It also looks like she wearing the wrong underwear for this. (I think I see a mid thigh length body shaper.)
What I would have done; Hair – down. Makeup – cleaner face, with more natural lashes but a bolder lip. Dress – change to a scoop neckline and get a black knee length shaper. Shoe – go with the light version like the model. Accessories – Bag is brilliant, but add pair of dangly earrings and lose the bracelet since it’s gets lost in the cuff of the dress anyway.

  • Billie_Dawn

IN. it’s fun, although I think she could have done better with the hair. Also, she frequently looks like a disaster on the red carpet, so this definitely qualifies as an IN.

  • MaryAlice Finley Davis

Looks like someone threw paint balls at it. Rita is doing the best she can, but the dress is just not pretty. Out.

  • bertkeeter

TF could have maybe put a tad more effort into this look! The beading is soooo basic it comes off looking cheap up close…..really cheap! She looks fine!

  • seelebrennt

i need a t-shirt that says, “Minion with Opinions”. also, i love her, but it’s not working for me. OUT.

  • Out. I think it could work with minimal accessories and less curves. Her bracelet and rings are ruining the effect of the sleeves.

  • carnush

OUT. Because the shoes and bag don’t go.

  • In. It has an Alexis Mateo “BAM!” and Rita Wilson was in “Volunteers”, my favorite Tom Hanks movie ever.

  • another_laura

Not her dress. Too silly. OUT.

  • keaglin

I’m not loving the neckline…it draws so much attention to her neck, and that’s not good for her. And her hair is not very flattering. I guess I’ll say OUT, but I love that she’s trying, and I’m not opposed to the dress, just not on her.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

My very simple rule of thumb: Rita Wilson is always an OUT. I’ve never ever seen her IN, there’s nothing she can drape across her body aside from Tom Hanks that’s an IN. OUT OUT OUT.

  • Rebecca Harvey

Out. The dress does nothing for her or the model. The beading is awkwardly placed for a long gown, but it could be really cute if it were shorter and sleeveless.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

This is a great point – the dress doesn’t even work for the model. That’s how you know it’s an all around bad dress.

  • JP

OUT. I don’t even like it on the model. It’s the muumuu your Aunt Sandy puts on when she sits by the pool in Boca.

  • leftcoastpickle

no, out, it’s an awful dress, and her hair looks too severe.

  • In_Stitches

Out-she looks like a super hero that hip-checks her way to victory.

  • alyce1213

In, I kind of like it on her. The drag false eyelashes scare me, though.

  • surfergirl70

Tragic dress all around, on anyone. OUT.

  • SewingSiren

A little bit of both. Still works for her though.

  • the way she’s styled it is too formal for how fun the dress is.

  • Cindy Bartlett Zigler

out. if you’re gonna wear spanx, at least get it in the same colour as the dress; not so noticeable. makeup isn’t right either; what’s with the face one shade lighter than your neck trend that I’ve been seeing?

  • LauraWL

She looks great. I love that she takes fashion risks and owns them (i,e. crazy Oscar chandelier dress). IN!

  • frannyprof

Fug. So so sorry, Rita. Love you mean it!

  • Erica Woods Tucker

One. The bra doesn’t help. It looks very pop-art-ish. It just needs a little more Warhol and she nails it. Oh wait that was a Face-Off episode on SyFy. Nah, not loving this one.

  • Kara Keenan

It’s not the worst, and I think in a better lit situation it would work better. She just seems to be fading into the background- except for the hip area.

  • Lorelei_D

  • GoAwayKardash

    Me likey. IN.

  • This dress looks like I felt yesterday when I fell down the stairs.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I’ll give it a tepid IN. It’s better than her usual looks.

  • MaggieMae

It’s not perfect, but I’m not willing to vote it out.

I applaud her choosing this youthful fun column dress at her age. I think she’s tipping towards pulling it off.

What doesn’t work for me is the clutch. Or those grandma shoes. Hair & make-up is mediocre in this lighting. She may very well have needed that dress lined. The flash on the RC is so unforgiving!

Even with all that, IN for the fun factor and charm.

  • Jaeda Laurez

IN. Love it- love the massive ring, although I feel like it’s on the wrong hand, and really like the purse. I would prefer it be a tad more fitted in the waist, but i dig it overall.

  • Imasewsure

It’s hard to see it against the black background but I love this dress on her. IN

  • ewes_urn_aim

  • mlle

That’s not her dress, and the shoes and hair aren’t helping her at all.

  • Emily Roach

Out. It’s the opposite of the Ted Mosby “Pulling. It. Off.”

  • Nah.

  • bellafigura1

IN! I think the Ka-pow graphic is the good part! My quibble is with the sleeve — I’d like to see them tighter or sheerer or stopped above the elbow. A little bit of skin to break up the black. Anyhow, I love her pretty face and the hair, too.

  • dschubba

Oof. I don’t mind the concept, but she could do much better.

  • Kelly

In. I like the dress. It looks chic, and as long as she’s not doing the naked-sheer thing, I think it’s fine for her age. But the eye makeup is sad.

  • Paula Pertile

    Its awful.

  • Diana Giese

IN! Totally fun. She’s rocking it. And I DO think it’s age apprpriate – age appropriate with pizazz.

  • Tracy_Flick

The detail reminds me of the Canadian flag, which makes me want to eat a Tim Horton’s donut and watch some hockey. I’m tempted to give it an IN just for that.

But I’m going to have to come down on the side of OUT, because the dress just looks lopsided with that big, heavy patch of beading on the relatively lightweight fabric, and AGAIN with the around-the-eye heavy black liner that makes the eyes looks small and close together. Why is that such a thing now? It looks so aging and unflattering.

  • TerryMH

I love it because its bold and fun…And I love her smile in these photos – clumpy mascara and all! Maybe I’m projecting but she always comes across as a genuine person to me . . . .or maybe its just her skin that’s genuine.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

For this challenge, Sustainicorn took his inspiration from that time his gran fell in the nursing home and broke her hip. Then he cried.

  • BPlease

Out. The gown doesn’t work for her – it certainly doesn’t flatter her. She doesn’t have that blithe spirit thing to make the gown sing, and the jewelry and shoes are awful. I feel a bit mean saying it but her hair and makeup are so harsh in these shots, too.

  • GillianHolroyd

I just saw a photo of Marisa Berenson wearing the same dress except in red and I thought it was vintage. At the time, I thought the baggy sleeves were odd and the sequined graphic looked dreary. So, OUT no matter who is wearing it.

  • fringebenefit

In…because it’s not really out. Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt.

  • BeeBeauNYC

As with most things that I’ve seen Rita Wilson wear, it’s OUT.

  • oatmealpie

Out. Move the ka-blamo up about 7 inches so it goes from boob to hip rather than from waist to thigh, and this could be cool. Also you need to lose the sleeves or shorten the hem. As is, she looks like the Burka Avenger.

  • formerlyAnon

IN. She could have used something colorful at her neck, but for her this works. Simple, no fuss, a big fun colorful graphic so it looks like an “occasion dress.” Good clutch.

But no awkward attempts to create a glam, or sexy or see-what-I’m-selling here “look” she’s obviously completed uninterested in.

  • gabbilevy

In. Hair could have used some oomph, but the dress is fun and flattering.

  • Belvane

Only if she’s wearing it to Comic-Con. Out.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Fair play to her. She gets an IN for bravery.

  • teensmom99

My big problem is the torso design and the fact that this doesn’t fit. She’s swimming in it and needs a little more skin shown at the top. The “kapow” design would be fine and fun–but because of fit and styling, this is an OUT.

  • Mudskipper

The print on the dress looks to me out of place and out of proportion. Besides, it looks like well organized paint ball explosion.
She chose to wear it a size larger than she needs to avoid sheerness of overstretched fabric. But as a result the sleeves and shoulders look really sad and bring everything down.

  • sagecreek

Out. I think it was out on the model, and if the model can’t pull it off, that’s a sign from God.

  • Shawn EH

Fun! Who doesn’t want an exploding pelvic bone?

  • TerryMarie

I think she looks fabulous. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you need to give up things that are fun, and this dress is a lot of fun. A great big IN from me.

  • Judy_S

I’ll give her an IN. It’s a silly dress but she looks like she understands that and is enjoying it.

  • bailey

gosh i hate tom ford. out

  • mmebam

I don’t think she knows what to do with it. #Out

  • appliquer

Out for the design of the dress – sleeves too long and it makes her look frumpy.

It looks like an artistic doctor’s report on the hip she needs to have replaced.

  • Donna Luder

I think she looks great. But the graphic makes me think of an ad for a hip replacement. “Do you have pain here?”

  • tired_mommy

Out. She is so pretty and this just isn’t her dress.

  • marlie

IN. I love this dress on her. The silhouette couldn’t be any simpler, but that burst of color really makes it.

  • CurbGirl

    Works for me…IN.

  • vitaminC

I like it in theory, and don’t think it’s age-inappropriate (pick off the bugle beads and it’s a Helen Mirren), but it seems… I dunno… unflattering? Like who looks in the mirror and longs for one giant orange hip? Still, an IN.

  • Dagney

  • lalahartma

    I am ambivalent.

  • Trickytrisha

Holy cats on a raft, how can that be anything but OUT?

  • VioletFem

IN. I love it. It’s unexpected, but it totally works for her.

  • Monabel

In, even without the “BAM” caption, imo.

  • EEKstl

I know the graphic reads a little comic book, but I like it. IN.

  • Darva Sutra

Fun! Love the dress, and she got her underpinnings correct. Great clutch/jewels! I would have have gone one degree warmer with the lip, a soft coral would have worked better. And zuzhed her hair up about 3 degrees. Win, overall.

  • Adriana_Paula

It’s not perfect (I wish the material were more columnar and less flowy) but dammit, I like it.

  • crash1212

I’m going to give her an IN, only because I usually hate, hate, hate what she wears and I really like this. I have quibbles though – #1: it looks like she has it over a white slip or something – it’s visible and it’s kind of tacky. #2: the hair is just…well I can’t really tell what it’s doing, but I would’ve like a nice pony with less severe around her face. #3: I think some chunky earrings would’ve helped out quite a lot. Even with the quibbles, I still think she looks better than normal.

  • anneland

OUT. It’s a long t-shirt from the tourist market in (name a country).

  • CatherineRhodes

  • sunflower

  • AMartel

And thank you for not being yet another boring clone.
(Glad she got it lined, though.)

  • MichelleRafter

It’d look better with the middle of the bling at her waist instead of her hip. All that sparkle, though is hiding the gorgeous bracelets she’s wearing on her left wrist — I’d have worn them on the other side to even things out.

  • Samantha Irene

In! Better than another plain black dress – and she looks like she’s having a bit of fun.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I’m giving her an IN…because we’re about the same age and probably wouldn’t wear this so props to her.

  • Kate4queen

In she looks confident and comfortable 🙂

  • Slanted & Enchanted

I love the dress, but I think it’s classic Girl, That’s Not Your Dress. Also I hate the shoes. OUT.

  • altalinda

  • Sara__B

    Out. Not her dress.

  • Tom Markiewicz

IN! I love it, it’s fun it’s chic it’s sassy, everything Rita Wilson should be.

  • Out. I don’t even like it on the model.

  • IN. I love it.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

OUT – this dress needs to be on a curvy girl

  • SophieCollier

The shape is sacklike and the placement of the explosion is just plain awkward. OUT!

  • conniemd

In, I think it’s super cool while being age appropriate and the shape looks good on her.

  • roche

IN. A fun and comfortable dress with a lot of personality. Not crazy about the hair, make-up and accessories though. The purse is working against the “kapow” beading on the dress, and the shoes look a little clunky. I think her hair should have been down and free and “fabulous” rather than pulled back and “low-key”.

  • Michelle O’Brien

    Out. Weird and ugly.

  • Jenna Marie

I love it. It’s different, it’s bold, it’s sleek. The lines are right. In.

  • lesmaha

Out. She looks uncomfortable to me.

  • Sweetpea176

Out. The placement of that Ka-Pow thing is throwing the whole thing out of whack for me.

  • StarburstLady

I’m seeing a woman in a shapeless bag with a comic book style “POW!” sound effect bubble coming from her hip. OUT…

  • amber.

  • trisker

out. The dress, the shape, the graphic, the hair — none of it does anything for her, and she’s a beautiful woman of a certain age.

  • demidaemon

I think it looks like someone went “KA-ZAM!! POW!! THWACK!!” to her peek-a-chu and/or hipbone, so I am going to say it’s a no for me. OUT.

  • SorayaS

Out. All that attention low on the hips is never going to be flattering. And there’s something incongruous about the slouchy-ness of the dress with the bang! party! cute! sequins.

Also the hair and makeup are very severe and I see where she was going with the clutch but I don’t like it

  • Good for her for being willing to experiment. IN.

  • Jessica Freeman

IN. Especially considering how Rita usually dresses.

  • Contralto

    OUT, OUT, OUT.

  • OUT!!!

The design on the dress looks like one of those Batman smacks, like BANG! THUNK! PUNCH! CRASH!

Or….the design looks like a huge t-shirt decal that somebody ironed on.

  • megohd

Rita Wilson is a beautiful woman and she is aging gracefully. However, she doesn’t have the bod for this dress. Very few people have the bod for this dress. Out.

  • rmp6y5

Out. It all looks very heavy on her, and the makeup and hair are not helping.

  • paintedfish

i think it’s cute and i love the comic book trend that’s coming out now. i wanna see a pic of her hip bumping the car door closed for some reason.

  • julnyes

OUT – I think her makeup is harsh and that dress is too young.

  • ThesisMonkey

Out. the fabric, sleeves, and whatever’s going on at the bottom are not working for me.

  • oohsparkley!

In. I think it suits her personality. She’s gone with some fun-ky stuff before.

  • Gatto Nero

Aside from the tacky comic book *ka-pow* graphic (which makes it look like her hip is exploding), the shape of the dress is wrong for her body. The high neckline and batwing sleeves aren’t doing her any favors. I think she needs something more tailored as opposed to jersey/drapey.

The dress could be fun on a 20ish year old. NOT good for her at all. Too stark black, pulled back hair. She just aged herself.

  • random_poster

In. I think it’s a chic look, and much better than her normal red carpet.

  • ballerinawithagun

Out, this Tom Ford collection seemed so desperate.

  • Absolutely adorable, but needs a bronze (or green metallic) heeled sandal.

  • amaranth16

I really liked this until it occurred to me that the starburst on her hip looks like a beer can logo. Now I can’t unsee it.
