IN or OUT: Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott

Posted on October 07, 2013

We really like this dress, but we question whether Nicole’s the gal to wear it.

Nicole Kidman attends Variety’s 5th Annual Power of Women Luncheon Presented by Lifetime in a L’Wren Scott dress, Jimmy Choo shoes, Fred Leighton jewelry, and an Omega watch.

L’Wren Scott Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Svea Kloosterhof

Because it’s got this sort of faux/ironic prim thing going on and Nicole’s brand of prim is anything but faux or ironic. Put this dress on someone like – we don’t know… Gwen Stefani, maybe – and she’d find a way to make it look edgy. Put it on someone like Michelle Williams and she’d know how to take the prim and make it hipster-chic. But put it on Princess Grace here, and it just kinda looks like a schoolmarm dress with delusions of disco. At the very least, we would have recommended zhuzhing up her hair and maybe finding some edge in the accessories. If nothing else, wearing a contractually obligated wristwatch and then pairing it with a cuff that kinda looks like a wristwatch was a very odd idea.

Vote Now!

IN! Sign me up for PRIM!

OUT! You, dear, are no Serene Highness.

Even the Buffy fans couldn’t rally behind Sarah Michelle Gellar’s bronze peplum, voting it OUT. Hunh. You’d think the Buffy fans would be big supporters of The Bronze.

the dress would work so much better if the buttons were black or clear.

      • MichelleRafter

Not good when the color of the buttons matches your hair

      • kimmeister

The gold buttons end up looking like coins.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Its a good size too small. Just look at how its puling across the bust. And I’m not liking the way the contrast style line stitching works on her. Going with an out, here.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

What is it with the size too small thing?! Don’t worry gals, we won’t think you’re fat if you size up!

        • BuffaloBarbara

It’s not like anyone would even know!

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Too tight was what I saw first too – and it sort of boggles the mind. You’d almost have to try hard to find something too small on her…

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well, though she is runway model tall, she’s got more going on in the ladyfront area than your typical model does.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I took a second look the dress IS pulling across the bust. I’m also not happy with those buttons-perhaps if they were clear? It’s just not working for me-out

      • bellafigura1

This is the second time in a month she’s squashed herself into a too-small outfit. She’s working against her God-given assets by worrying about them and letting it show! OUT.

        • makeityourself

          Those aren’t God-given.

          • bellafigura1

            LOL.

    • Nikko Viquiera

      IN.

    • leahpapa

OUT. Looks like what a librarian would wear in the Austin Powers universe…and not in a good way.

      • Darren Nesbitt

When I saw it I thought Tina Knowles for Beyonce in Austin Powers as Foxy Cleopatra

      • Samantha Klein

Hey, can we lay off the librarians? Lots of us actually have style…

        • leahpapa

          Point taken. I’m a schoolmarm, myself :)

        • Sunraya

And I am an English teacher schoolmarm, rocking a shawl today!!

    • Diego!

It’s an OUT to me. What’s really killing (like… deadly) this look is her hairstyle and makeup. Had she worn her hair with big waves or curly but loose, this look would have been something else. You tried Nicole but it wasn’t enough.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

OUT. Because “a schoolmarm dress with delusions of disco”.

    • 3boysful

I like it, except that it’s making her look short-waisted. I even like the hair. But the shoes are all kinds of wrong. Besides being ugly, they aren’t weighty enough to ground this dress.

    • Emily

Out. It’s just not her dress at all. I’m glad to see her face is looking more… face-like, though.

    • Bokharitt Kinantahz

hard one but No. Also, I was thinking how good she looked, wondering if she’d had work done and then I saw her hand. ohh.

    • RussellH88

I have no idea why, but all I see is The King and I.

    • VioletFem

OUT. I like it on the model, but it’s just not working on her.

LOL! I see what you did there with the Buffy reference. Lame jokes FTW!

    • KayEmWhy

Sorry to say, but this dress is not age appropriate.

    • mjude

I do like the dress. but forgive me Nicole….OUT

    • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

idk I feel like this dress is totally her, but would be so much better if she still had red hair…

    • BrooklynBomber

Out. Yet another case of barking up the wrong twee (bad me for quoting myself, but I think it applies). But, really, this dress would be a lost cause on anybody. The gold accents are terrible, and make it look like the work of a student designer who hasn’t quite figured out the difference between sophistication and kitsch.

      • VicD

“Barking up the wrong twee!” Snork!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

        Such a good line though.

Anyway, it’s an OUT for me too because it’s not her dress and the gold bits looks like unforgiveably cheap pleather.

        • BrooklynBomber

So not her dress and the gold bits are a disaster.

    • Marie

      OUT

    • MilaXX

IN – Yes it’s very stepford wife looking, but I think it’s and okay look for a daytime event.

    • Ruth Preston

      Botox disco schoolmarm. Out.

    • jenrsmall

Yeah, it’s an OUT for me, which is too bad because it seems like a cool dress. I’d like to see it on Helena Bonham Carter! Or maybe Ellen Paige…

    • Jessica Freeman

Oh, this is a tough one…but its an OUT. It’s too much gold. I think the only thing I really like is the gold piping, but the buttons, collar, cuffs AND belt. Lord no.

      • marlie

        And hair…

    • Vanessa

I know I am focusing on the appropriateness of the event, but she looks like a 40s “glamour secretary” to me, not a highly paid movie star.

    • Jangle57

I like the dress too – but it makes her look awful prim and schoolmarmish so it’s OUT for me

    • Jennifer McGuire

      out. SCARY disco schoolmarm.

    • Tanya Wade

My. Aren’t we looking matronly, Miss Beadle? Also, is that denim???!!!

      • Inspector_Gidget

Ha! That was my first thought, too. It does look like denim at first glance. I think the stitching reinforces that. Sort of a weird “hoedown ingenue” effect until you look closer.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I adore you boys. The whole Buffy/Bronze ender…beautiful.

OUT. It’s just not her dress, not styled like that.

      • isapaiva

Right? I don’t even care about Nicole Kidman’s disco pilgrim look, I just had to bow down to that pun in the comment section.

        • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

The way to my heart is through a Whedon reference. Every single time.

    • VicD

out…. “schoolmarm dress with delusions of disco” Snort!

    • Janet B

      OUT.
She’s not pulling off the ironic.

    • http://lavidalaura.com/ Laura Grai

OUT – not because I think Nicole’s the wrong person for the dress, but because I just hate the dress. The gold details look cheap to me.

    • rebeemoon

OUT. What looks good on the model goes all matronly on Nicole.

    • formerlyAnon

Can she be out because her hair is ALL WRONG? If her hair had given her head more grown up sophistication, this would have worked. Also, I think her hair color is not working with the dress.

And the bodice is a good half size too small. This is not an evening gown for a look set on the line between body conscious and bimbo.

O.k., even though I like the dress, out.

    • Chartreusite

Agreed absolutely. I think if the hair was something less pulled back and maybe a little more voluminous, the primness of it would be slightly underplayed. I’m a little rough on the accessories game, so I’ll take your guys’ word on how they could’ve been better utilized to style this.

    • carnush

      Odd and ugly. OUT.

    • majorbedhead

Oooh, no. No, that’s not a good look at all. The hair is…yish. And the dress…blech. OUT.

    • Lori

Out. I think she might possibly have been able to make it work if it fit, which it does not, but it’s not her style. She would have been better off in something else and the dress would be better on someone else.

    • ThesisMonkey

OUT. cheap-looking gold, wrong styling, wrong lady star

    • kbshee

Out. And not just because there’s something weird sticking up at the neckline.

    • MaggieMae

I’d like to see how she looks in this dress with her hair a darker auburn color. In the photos, her hair nearly matches the gold on the dress, and it doesn’t look right.

    • lobsterlen

Love the dress but Nicole’s hair is ruining it for me. Had she worn her hair down it may have made all the difference. Out

    • H2olovngrl

When I saw it on the model, I thought, No, that’s Keira Knightley’s dress.

      • kimmeister

I was thinking Evan Rachel Wood.

    • Joe Schmartin

OUT – So costumey. I wanna give her a gold-plated ray gun and tell her to shoot 70’s-era Cylons.

    • gabbilevy

Out. That’s not to say she looks bad… she almost never does. But she can do so much better.

    • Samantha Klein

I don’t know, I think it suits her really well. IN.

    • sagecreek

OUT — the severe hair killed it.

    • Garcia Loca

I would vote this dress in, but only on the condition that Nicole does her hair like the model — we know she can rock wild frizzy curls like no other!

ETA: Alas, with this hairstyle, it’s an OUT for me.

    • ashtangajunkie

No. Out. Love the dress, but not for Kidman. I wish her hair had more life to it.

    • kmk05

OUT. Like you said, she’s too serious for it. The pulled -away hair just makes it sad. The model, OTOH, is rocking it: her hair gives me life!

    • kayleymaybe

OUT. Looks like a costume on her. Stewardess perhaps?

TLo is right (as always) that it would be cute on others, but she just isn’t the right person for it.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

This dress is business up top, skipping on the bottom. Nicole Kidman does not skip.

    • Introspective

all the way out. puritan with a side of disco just doesn’t work well on the red carpet.

    • CB

I just can’t get on board with the collared-shirt-buttoned-all-the-way-up look. I don’t really think it works on anyone, especially on someone like Nicole who tends to look too severe anyway.

    • theblondette

      No. Las Vegas PTA.

    • marlie

I like the dress, AND I like it on her, but the whole look underwhelms. I give this a tepid “in.”

    • LipstickForPigs

Christina Hendricks needs to send her colorist over to Ms Kidman who seems hell-bent on bleaching her hair into frailty.

    • Joey Melliza

katy perry is roaring to get her outfit back miss nic

    • Bridget Smith

I have a lot of fellow-feeling for Nicole Kidman, because we are style kindred: tall, lean, vaguely prim. And I would’ve taken one look at this dress and gone, “NOPE.” It’s prim in a way that’s intended to be funked up, and neither Nicole nor I can do that for it. We do best in vaguely funky-yet-clean-lined sportswear.

    • Terri Terri

I dislike that dress, no matter who is wearing it!

    • sewchick

      Out

    • halleygee

“…a schoolmarm dress with delusions of disco.” Great description.

    • melanie0866

IN. She looks like the CEO of some international conglomerate.

    • Not applicable

I think the hair is just wrong. In general, what’s going on with the hair, Nicole?? I think she looked the absolute best in The Others-with the soft strawberry curled bob. Worked well with the prim. just MHO

    • bertkeeter

Gold collar n buttons not doing her hai color any favors! Looks like she’s on the set of Downton Abbey 1930’s episode!

    • Sunraya

Love the dress, it looks gorgeous on the model! Maybe it’s the hair – let it down, curl it, zaam!!! Much edgier. I don’t know, I just hate it on Nicole.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234087433 Jen Freeman

“Even the Buffy fans couldn’t rally behind Sarah Michelle Gellar’s bronze peplum, voting it OUT. Hunh. You’d think the Buffy fans would be big supporters of The Bronze.”
OMG I love you right now. THis made my morning.

    • another_laura

After careful, thoughtful (snort) consideration, I’m giving it an Out. It might have been in but it looks like she should have gone up a size, I don’t like the pleather-looking trims, and those are the wrong shoes.

    • GorgeousThings

OUT. It looks a little faux military schoolmarm to me.

    • Imasewsure

In for Michelle Williams or some tough chick but not for Lady Nicole. OUT

    • Bernadette

      Out!

    • unbornfawn

OUT. It’s not your dress dear. Put it back on the rack.

    • CatherineRhodes

      OUT

    • Paula Pertile

Love the dress. Shoes are all wrong.

    • Bailey Debruynkops

      out.

    • Qitkat

Out. Everything here is perfect and prim, but not her dress. It looks amazing on the model with the electric hair I would trade for in a new york minute.

    • Aidan B

OUT. You’re right, she’s the wrong woman for this dress. On her it just looks dowdy.

    • chylde

OUT. She just needs a fringe vest, cowboy boots and a 10 gallon hat. Yeehaw!

    • jesuiskate

While I don’t love the hair, I think she’s pulling it off. It’s a bit unexpected coming from her, and I think she looks chic. In!

    • Shawn EH

      Super duper uptight. OUT.

    • BuffaloBarbara

The metallic collar doesn’t do anything for Nicole’s complexion, and it certainly comes off as prim. While I support the concept of modest dresses on the photo walk (talk about actually being rebellious!), this one on Nicole Kidman does cross the line from modest to kind of stuffy.

As for her hair, I miss the days of the wild curls. This flattened, severe look isn’t flattering to her at all.

    • AmeliaEve

OUT – I can’t really read the fabric from the picture. Is it black wool flannel? My eye keeps wanting to make it denim. And then all she would need is patchwork vest with apples appliquéd on it and some fun gold lame loafers to win teacher of the year. Or maybe Stepford Mom on back to school night. To the extent that it works on the model, it’s because she is young enough to make it look school GIRL and not school MARM.

Separately, that neckline bugs. I am not fond of shirtwaists that button all the way up, but if you are going to do it, for heaven’s sake make sure the placket lies flat. That is what the tiny little snap is for.

    • keaglin

I agree that the dress isn’t so bad, but she definitely needed to soften the hair a bit. And the fit is off. Have to go with an out.

    • crash1212

OUT. Only because the gold accents of the dress match her hair and that looks weird. Would’ve been an IN from me if her hair was darker.

    • Clydette Wantland

When did Nicole become a librarian?

    • NDC_IPCentral

Concierge, bellhop, porter. Not Ms. Kidman’s dress.

    • Kelly

Out. Too Stepford Wives. And since Nicole often looks like a Stepford Wife for real, I agree with the uncles: it’s not prim-with-an-edge. It’s just prim. And the shoes don’t go. And she looks like she’s wearing too much foundation — a much bigger smile, and the stuff’s going to crack and flake off.

I do like the dress on its own, though — it could be fun.

    • frannyprof

“Delusions of Disco” would be the name of my first album, if i were a singer, musician, which i am not. Oh, and Ms. Nicole is OUT. The head does not match the dress.

    • CT14

      Out.

Especially with that hair. If she had her wild red curls rocking, maybe. But her hair matches the collar and takes it from justprm to sister wife.

    • Elizabetta1022

Mary Poppins chaperones the disco. Out.

    • Ellen Calarese

      Cut it OUT.

    • elemspbee

OUT. I’m thinking send it to Cameron Diaz.

    • RebeccaKW

Out. I don’t hate the dress on her, but she’s failed on the style front. She needs better shoes, better jewelry, better hair, and better makeup to move this out of Frumpytown and into Fabulousville. Also, that’s not the best shade of hair color.

    • Isabel

Out – UNLESS – she really wants to be in Stepford Wives II

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Gotta give it an OUT – I thought “Schoolmarm”, same as you did, TLo.

    • Call me Bee

This is cute dress, but because Nicole’s usually so buttoned up anyway, it’s smack in the middle of Dowdyville. She needs to let her hair fly and wear some unexpected shoes and then it may work. But as is? OUT.

    • decormaven

Out. Dress not flattering, makeup/hair too severe.

    • MannahattaMamma

Her hair is the PRECISE shade as the trim on the dress, leading a person to wonder if her hair is also made of gilded leather and then just sort of glued in place.

    • Beth

      Yikes. Out

    • trisker

      IN. I love this.

    • LaSylphide

      Contrasting top stitching, therefore, OUT.

    • E2_Remote

I feel like this is Janelle Monae’s dress, once she decides to transition out of the tuxedos and needs a “bridge” dress.

    • altalinda

      Schoolmarm indeed. Out.

    • Kate4queen

Out, it’s too heavy for her.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

      Flashbacks to the Golden Compass.

    • Trickytrisha

OUT.. that dress looks like a high school home ec project to me (do they still teach sewing in high school?). And Nicole looks like the mannequin it’s displayed on.

    • StarburstLady

      OUT…

    • ThaliaMenninger

While she’s still in this Princess Grace phase, I think this is fine. Don’t love it, but it’s good enough for an IN from me.

    • manina

OUT! This dress would not look good on anyone. Nicole has one of the best figures around and it does not look good on her or the model. Sure the model looks good because she is walking and has bigger hair but this dress is UGLY.

    • demidaemon

I’m going to say IN here. She’s doing her respectable businesswoman drag and I love it. I’ll probably be the dissenting opinion, but I won’t know because I don’t read comments on In/Out posts so as not to be influenced in my opinion making. ;)

    • LadyLuck777

In. I think she looks good, even though her hair is too severe. A blowout would have softened the primness.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      OUT

    • E. D.

OUT. Michelle Williams could do something with this if the length was right.

    • teensmom99

IN . . . because it’s so great but even before I saw the model, I thought how great it would look with her original curly locks.

    • OpinionatedMtnGirl

      OUT – too Stepford-y

    • WittyCism

      Out :(

    • conniemd

Out. Before I read your comments I thought the dress was too young for her. As you commented, a younger person could make it like chic and ironic, but at Nicole’s age, it just looks schoolmarmish.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      Out!

    • Joanne Abrams

This dress makes her head look super big! Not liking the look

    • rainwood1

It’s an IN only because it made you think of the phrase “delusions of disco.”

IN. Love the dress. Hate the helmet-head.

    • Judy_S

” schoolmarm dress with delusions of disco.” OUT.

I quite like the dress, but she looks strangely like a bobble head doll. OUT.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Unquestionably OUT. This is not her dress at all. I wouldn’t put it on Gwen Stefani, either. Shorten the hem and send this to Chloe Moretz.

    • http://www.momforless.com Crystal

OUT, but I love the shoes..

    • Trisha26

OUT. Prim was my adjective of choice as well.

    • sleepycat

no no, just not working for me OUT

    • Reality TV Casting

      out

    • lesmaha

      Out.

    • hmatz

Out. I like the dress on the model, but I agree that when Nicole Kidman wears it, it starts to lo look like some strange cross between Colonial Williamsburg and Studio 54. Unfortunately, she’s just too prim and proper to make it work.

    • altissima

OUT. Prim and dowdy, and the mid section is unflattering.

    • Erica_Vuitton

OUT. Everything is too small. The dress is too tight and potentially itchy that it’s making me physically uncomfortable. The hair is too severe and brittle. And am I so used to seeing people wear oversized shoes on the RC that these shoes look too tight when they are probably just the right size?

    • Jenna Marie

      Out.

    • Sam Smith

Do not like and she can’t even smile anymore.

    • tereliz

Oh, dear. Far too prim. The hair and conservative accessories are not helping. OUT!

I keep seeing Jennifer Morrison in this dress. Not sure if it’s HER dress, but it would be better than the last thing I saw her in.

PS, that Buffy pun was the worst but I still laughed. And then I shook my head for laughing.

    • julnyes

The Bronze – HA HA – good one there TLo!!

Nicole – OUT, this is Not Your Dress.

    • Constant Reader

OUT. I dislike the matching collar and hair color, the slicked back hair, and the granny shoes. They take the fun right out of this dress.

    • Lilyana_F

Oh my, she looks terrifying to me for some reason.

    • littlemac8

OUT – It looks kind of cute on the model and has some movement to it. On Nicole it looks stiff and tight. Uncomfortably prim and proper reads as no fun at all!
