IN or OUT: Juliette Lewis in Monique Lhuillier at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards

Posted on October 22, 2013

Yes? No?

Monique Lhuillier at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards in Beverly Hills, California in Monique Lhuillier.

Monique Lhuillier Resort 2014 Collection

We like the colors and the silhouette. The shoes are hot. But we’re not loving the random scrapbook-looking lace panels all over the place. And her hair looks like she had it braided, then she slammed her face really hard into a pillow over and over again, until it was just as messy as she liked.

And how do the Kittens feel? Remember to show your work.

Vote Now!

IN! I love it! Especially the ________________!

OUT! I was fine until I got to the _______________.

We’ll tell you how the kittens felt about Chloe Moretz’s pile ‘o rags: they hated it, voting it OUT.

IN! She’s beautiful and a little nuts, just like the dress. I think the pattern is fun and adds some edge to what is essentially a strapless mullet gown.

      • merciblahblah

I agree exactly with what you said. My first thought was – It’s a quirky dress for a quirky gal. And then I remembered that I hate the word GAL. But still, you catch my drift. Overall I like it, but can we not be DONE FOREVER with the mullet dress? I. Hate. Them.

        • AnneElliot

Agree about the mullet dress, x1000. At least it’s not 1. Sheer or 2. The color of old bras.

      • Sara Hottman

Totally agree. Just the right amount of kooky. IN.

      • DinaSews

        Agree. IN!

      • Constant Reader

I agree. I’d like to hoik the whole thing up about and inch and a half, but other than that, IN. (Even with the bedhead, which I normally mock. This is Juliette, after all.)

    • Sarah

Needs to be tea length, then maybe. But OUT for mullety, and OUT for bad hair. (Sorry Juliette, I still luv ya)

    • Diana Giese

Girl that’s not your dress. OUT.

    • pop_top

      Not loving it. OUT.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

IN, because she looks feminine and pretty but still a little kooky.

    • Karen Belgrad

Is lack of proper chest support the new “nude shoe”?

      • charlotte

        It is getting tiresome.

    • gabbilevy

Out. Like the dress, but it’s too much for Juliette. The hair is not … no. Nope.

    • Rhonda Shore

IN! She looks ebullient. Would have preferred tea length, but she’s making this work.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I love it. Especially since it seems true to her personality. Pretty, but interesting. (luv huh)

    • lunchcoma

Out. I think my problem is with the styling. The bed head, sandally shoes, and minimal jewelry make it look more like something to wear to a summer picnic than a formal dress.

    • http://melaniesuzanne.blogspot.com/ Melanie Suzanne

I LOVE THIS. (except for the shoes) IN!

    • ashtangajunkie

In. The dress is pretty but a bit weird, which suits the wearer. I loathe the hair, but a Juliette Lewis is bad ass and pulls it off.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I love it. Especially since Juliette Lewis is the American HBC.

    • willworktomorrow

In, for the dress and shoes, but the other accessories are just wrong.

    • nicole seligman

eek, OUT! girl, that’s not your dress. send it off to a fanning sister. they could use a little color and edge.

    • VioletFem

IN. It is such a lovely look. I actually like the random placements of the lace panels, it goes quite well with the pattern of the dress.

    • Adina Miller Holmes

I love it, but it doesn’t seem to fit her correctly, or she needs better undergarments, because it looks like the top of the dress is smooshing her boobs flat, then down. It’s distracting me …

    • SouthernGirlRena

Inish? I am a sucker for pink and black and I like it a lot from a distance. Up close, the details are crafty and I hate the Pinterest hair.

    • E. D.

IN, although the top of the dress doesn’t quite fit.

She’s crazy and so is this, so it works.

    • StephanieLovesTLo

In! I love it–especially the hair. :) Personal best for her.

    • jw_ny

      in

I was all set to give it an out until I saw the last photo…shoes were deciding factor. I thought from looking at the first photo that she was wearing flat sandals O.o I really dislike her lipstick, and the bodice is really unflattering to her boobs. Also, I’m not convinced it is her dress, but enough of it works.

    • jilly_d

In! Quirky but not totally insane.

    • ovarB

The longer I pour over the details of this outfit the more I declare it an “out.” Too much like an inspiration of “create your own prom dress like Pretty in Pink!”

Can there be a standard put in place where the top of a strapless dress should fall on a woman?? So distracting to look at a strapless dress and think “that dress is hanging on for dear life.”

    • teensmom99

IN but it would be a WERQ if it fit better on top.

    • procrastinatrice

OUT. Boobs are squished, hair is unflattering and flat, the clutch doesn’t go, and the make up looks unprofessional. The dress is not horrible but the fit is just bad. I only like the shoes.

    • Janet B

Love the color combination, but up close the fabric is ugly.

    • Danielle

I love this! She doesn’t look batshit crazy so it’s an IN for me.

    • Kate4queen

Out because she isn’t wearing it with the necessary conviction.

    • kimmeister

OUT! I was fine until I got to the unflattering fit on her boobs.

    • http://www.argonauticos.blogspot.com/ jason

      I like the dress…but that’s it. I vote a qualified IN

    • Adrianna Grężak

It’s a little Pinterest DIY art project, (hair, especially) but otherwise in.

    • Let it out

IN! It’s not perfect, but I love that the dress is feminine and edgy at the same (not the first person to say this, just casting my vote). She looks confident and pretty.

    • ringthing

IN. I like the dress on her and I’m guessing it’s one of those types of dresses that look better in motion. I don’t like her hair at all, but I didn’t like Melissa McCarthey’s hair either and I would have definitely voted HER in. So kooky Juliette gets a pass.

    • another_laura

Out. I was almost fine (because I was getting unreasonably angry about all these women wearing summer clothing in late October) until I got to the closeup of the fabric and then went back up to her hair. The color scheme is actually quite nice, I wasn’t minding the hem work, and I kind of liked the shoes.

    • mmebam

Lord, bless! Morning after prom realness! #Out

    • kat89

In. I think this is a personal best for her. Girl has worn some cracked out shit over the years. I give her points for reeling in the crazy for a change.

    • lizajane1776

In. She looks better than “normal” for her. It would be better all one length, but I am grading on a curve here.

    • Amanda Welliver

In. And it reminds me of those folded gum wrapper chains we used to make. Juicy Fruit all the way.

    • drae27

OUT – The length in front is too long and the look is not holding together. It’s something to do with her hair color, the lip color and the colors in the dress. Maybe if her hair were darker it would work? The shoes are ok on their own but again….they don’t seem to fit with the rest.

    • Imasewsure

I have come to the conclusion that I hate that neckline on almost everyone. Definitely do not like this look on her muchl. Fabric is pretty but it’s an OUT for fit and styling

    • Rand Ortega

As long as she never cornrows her hair again, I’m good.
IN. I love it! Especially the hem.

      • leilah

“..never cornrows her hair again…”–Amen and hallelujah!!

    • Lori

IN. I have issues with this, but it’s not filling me with rage or anything. The color looks good on her and she looks happy in it, which goes a long way. Also, it’s so much better than a lot of the stuff she’s worn that I’m inclined to grade on the curve.

    • sagecreek

      IN!

    • alyce1213

In! This is her dress, maybe hers alone. Boobs are a little squished, but that seems to be everywhere now.

    • Trickytrisha

In. Mostly. I do love the dress fabric, except for those sissy-ass lace bits. It’s too long for her, the shoes are super, the hair is mermaid-in-a-tornado bad, makeup is good, she looks happy.

    • largishbearishAtlish

OMG!!! Its the design your textile challenge from PR! right?? right?

      (and IN)

    • GTrain

      OUT.

    • aeb1986

In! The hair isnt the best but I love the dress

    • LaSylphide

Just don’t think this flatters her at all. Sadly, out.

    • bailey

IN eventhough i prefer the shoes the model is wearing.

    • Glam Dixie

Out, smooshed boobs, sitting too low, awkward hem length, ugly lipstick color, and messy hair.

    • ChelseaNH

In. I’m fine with everything below the neck, enough that I can deal with the hair and makeup.

    • StarburstLady

Honestly, my only complain is the length, which makes her look kinda stumpy. IN.

    • Jangle57

I mostly like the dress – any shorter in the front and it would have been a no – think she could have used something at the neckline but am ok with the hair and makeup. IN

    • anneland

IN. Love it, especially the bottom hem (weirdly).

    • msdamselfly

IN Love it–she looks radiant and the dress is lovely and fits her perfectly

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

IN. The whole looks for her (and probably only for her), and I love her because she’s insane and because Mallory Knox is one of my favorite female characters of film history.

    • JauntyJohn

IN – all its crazy quilt patchwork wacky beauty is exactly her.

    • conniemd

IN. I love the color and silhouette, it’s so feminine and flowing. Don’t mind the pattern. She looks like she feels pretty in it.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

Yes, mama! It’s perfect for her.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

IN. I love it, but I’m not entirely sure that’s not just my general love of her spilling over. I have no objectivity when it comes to Miss Lewis. Yes to the shape, the colors, the shoes, the makeup and even the hair. A tiny whisper of no to the lace.

    • EveEve

Out. Ugly pattern, unflattering silhouette, trying-too-hard hair, and heinous lipstick. Of course, I don’t know who she is, so that’s not affecting my judgment.

    • demidaemon

I hate this length and I hate her hair. The make-up and the posing are awesome. But that length trumps everything. OUT.

    • Pterodactyl111

      In! I love it.

    • KT

The hair is bad, true, but overall I think she looks cute and fun.

    • cocohall

Her face seems to be morphing into Nicollete Sheridan. Just odd – never thought they looked alike before. I like the shape of the dress but the fabric is hideous. And the pattern fights the silhouette. It is too graphic and instead of focusing on the flow of the dress, you are busy trying to figure out what the hell the test-pattern print is trying to say. I want to say get me some scissors so I can cut her hair, but this is the girl that wore corn-rows to the Oscars, so hell, yes, she looks great.

    • YoungSally

She’s not naked and having sex with Terry Richardson….I think all is good. She also is rocking a bit of a post-Debi Mazar vibe….it could work for her.

    • Julie Chase

      In!

    • Leah Elzinga

IN. Totally suits her, a little quirky, a little awkward but still pretty. She’s doing that whole “so this dress, right?!” posing thing that we know the Uncles don’t like, but it’s Juliette; standards are different. As for her hair, I’m pretty sure “her hair looks like she had it braided, then she slammed her face
really hard into a pillow over and over again, until it was just as
messy as she liked” was EXACTLY what she was going for. SO you can either give it the “Juliette” pass since you know it was very much intentional, or ding it regardless. Overall IN, for me though.

    • Miss WKS

Quite a literal translation of filmstrip print. I like it. It’s very Her.

    • MilaXX

Out! Bad hair, wrong shoe, dress 2 inches too long .

    • crystal76

In. I like her hair it’s very romantic.

    • OpinionatedMtnGirl

IN – the dress is sooooo fabulous I can overlook the hair

    • amber.

      IN.

    • Nexli B

Love the dress, love the hair, in in IN!

    • Bexxx

I am obsessed with her, so this is biased, but it’s an IN for me. It’s just so delightfully her.

    • whirligig7

I just adore the horizontal line right in the middle of her forehead. How glorious she is not botoxing to hell and looks like herself. Fabulous and I like the dress too.

    • Mudskipper

IN!!!!!!!!!!! She really pulls it off and she is having a lot of fun!

    • Call me Bee

Beautiful! She looks relaxed and happy and the dress is killer. I like the model’s more dramatic shoes a bit better, but these are lovely as well. IN

    • Nellie Wilson

OUT. I was fine until I got to the hair.

    • filmcricket

In. Yes the hair is bad and she needs to hoik the bodice up a couple inches, but the dress is quirky and fun like she is, and I quite like both the print and the shape, which I never thought I’d say about a mullet hem.

    • AnniNoone

Love the dress, love the shoes, don’t hate the hair and makeup as much as you, and damn, she’s aging well. IN.

    • quiltrx

IN…because I love her, and I love the dress.
(I actually thought the lacy bits were part of the print, until you pointed out otherwise.)

    • marlie

IN! I love it, especially the patchwork panels of flowers! It would have been better if it had been hiked up just a bit, and she really should have done something… better… to her hair. Also, I love how much fun she seems to be having on the red carpet.

    • lmc

      IN!

    • nannypoo

She looks so bad, I’m surprised there are so many BKs who think she looks good. I hate it. Maybe if her hair was less hideous and she had acceptable makeup I could figure out what there is here to like.

    • Lorelei_D

IN, although I could do without the mugging.

    • allcapsERINN

In. It suits her somehow. I think she’s one of the few people who can make that dress work.

    • MaryAlice Finley Davis

In. I love it, especially the purple color.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Well……it’s not black. (Talk about damning with faint praise.) Against all reason, I’m voting IN, although I’m not sure why.

    • ItsDicey

IN. Hate the hair, but everything else is good. Nutty, but good.

      • Jaeda Laurez

Isn’t that the way? She’ll manage to look lovely from the neck down, but from the neck up, she always looks like an unmade bed.

    • Laura Renee

IN! Lovely dress and I like the hair too. Nice choice of lipstick.

    • MoHub

I’d like it if it weren’t riding low up top.

      • poggi

I agree. The dress seems to be pulling her down a bit (she may need better support than a strapless like this permits). This combined with the skirt seeming a little long and the hair, makes her look droopy.

    • BayTampaBay

IN! I love the print of the dress but think the shoes are too “naked”. The bold print needs something heavier for balance.

    • steeg of their own

IN! Are you kidding me? For Juliette Lewis, this is practically a WERQ!

    • In_Stitches

OUT on the basis that it looks like Avril Lavigne’s dream prom gown.

    • mjude

IN even though I hate mullet dresses

    • BuffaloBarbara

IN (from the neck down). The silhouette is one of my favorites, and the almost random lace panels kind of work with the print.

From the neck up, it’s a disaster, though. What would be better with the hair? Maybe a high pony? (It would be a little Patty SImcox from Grease, but then, I like the ’50s look.)

    • Anplica Fiore

Out – It was (mostly fine) until I got to the mullet skirt.

    • ewes_urn_aim

      IN

    • Tatiana Luján

In, but I don’t like the braid.

    • empath

OUT! I was fine until I got to the 1980s ladies’ lounge wallpaper fashioned into a 1980s mullet ‘do.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

In. Mostly because I’m having a crappy day and her posing on the red carpet has brightened my day a bit..and surprisingly I actually like the dress.

    • rebeemoon

IN! I love it! Especially the colors. They look great on her. The lipstick is a little dark, though.

    • http://lifelovelibrarianship.com/ LibrarianLizy

Based solely on the hair alone, OUT. But I’m not crazy about the dress either. That lace needs to go.

    • boweryboy

IN! I love it! Especially her batshit crazy poses.

    • crash1212

IN! I love it! Especially the attitude.

    • sk8tfan

I like the dress on her, she’s probably the only one who could wear it. She gets points off for the silly hair, though.

    • mhlmh

IN. I love it. Especially the top half, which I think looks beautiful. And I love her whole head, especially her radiant smile. I even love her messed up hair.

    • CatherineRhodes

OUT. Why? Hate mullet dresses, hate bare toe-splaying shoes, hate the messy braid trend, hate this potato-print fabric. Also, she looks dumb the way she’s vamping on the red carpet. That’s why.

    • Ashleigh

      IN. OMG. So in.

    • Rebekah B

I like scrapbooking and lace, so I’m going to go with IN.

    • ojosazules

IN. It’s a good dress for her, a bit edgy/quirky, and she looks great in it. The hair is unfortunate.

    • lilazander

IN!I love it! Especially the colour and patterns on the dress.

    • Beverly Nash

Why would it be out? Don’t love the pattern, but she looks good. IN!

    • LJCdoc

I don’t love the hair, but I love the dress. IN.

    • julnyes

She is a nutty piece of fruitcake and I love her – IN!

    • webslice33

      IN! she looks great!

    • elemspbee

Question for all ye knowledgeable ones: How do we read the almost princess bow here? Because from a post a day ago, it was noted that anyone doing that lit’l curtsy is masking their discomfort with what they are wearing.

She seems high as a kite, as always, here. Fun.

    • frannyprof

      IN, but barely.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In. HOWEVER. She needs a better fit in the bust, hate the hair style and color and she needs to blot her lips.

    • ThaliaMenninger

This is as IN as she’s ever gonna be. By which I mean, certainly not perfect, but better than she usually does, that’s for sure.

    • formerlyAnon

Out. I would think the gown was fine, but for the mullet hem, and easily give that a pass. But her hair created the *instant* association in my mind with the sausage curls on the skinny stepsister in the classic Disney cartoon version of Cinderella. Now it’s all I see. And that is Not At All Good.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

In. I hate the hair and lipstick, but the rest of it works for me.

    • Diesel von Trapp

In. It’s pretty and fun and she seems to feel pretty and fun in it.

    • MissFern

i really love this on her!

    • flamingoNW

      YES

    • rkdgal

      NOPE.

    • Lisa_Co

      IN. Love the dress.

    • jif

      Maybe. Weird brick-like print.

    • amanda lynn

IN. I like it, and the lace panels add to the pattern.

    • Fuchaforever

OUT. I hate that print! Plus, I don’t understand this gown. It look casual and formal at the same time like it’s having an indecisive moment or identity crisis.

    • Michelle Gennari

Adorable! I think she needed something at the neck…some baubles or something. There’s a big expanse of emptiness between the face and bustline.

    • Kent Roby

IN! It’s great to see her again, and she looks pretty without losing an ounce of her quirkiness.

    • Andrea Lentz

IN especially her hair which i love love love

    • Angela Cotsones Shea

Remember those chains you could make by folding gum wrappers? Dress by Wrigley!

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I like it all – she’s cool and doesn’t follow the crowd, but she looks good. Not sold on the hair though; maybe if it was shorter.

    • Shawn EH

In! She’s giving what the model gave, but with personality and approachability rather than aloof reserve. Very flattering gown for her.

    • altalinda

Voting may already be closed, but in case not — out, because I think it’s not her dress. This is a dress for a “nice girl” and J has a more dangerous, rock and roll edge.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

In! I like everything except the hair.

    • Gatto Nero

On the fence. I like the fit and silhouette on her, but I’m not sure it’s her “look.” Don’t like the patchwork fabric or the messy braid. WTH is going on in pic 6?
