IN or OUT: Cobie Smulders at the 2013 Oceana’s Partners Awards Gala

Posted on October 31, 2013

We admit it. Sometimes we put these looks up to a vote because the only thing we can think to say about it is how boring it is. Then we feel guilty because it’s kind of hard to look at this:

Cobie Smulders attends the 2013 Oceana’s Partners Awards Gala in Beverly Hills, California.

…and get away with shrieking about how awful it is. Of course she’s beautiful and the dress is pretty enough. But yeah: boring.

So first, you need to vote on whether it’s so boring it’s out or so tasteful it’s in:

Vote Now!

IN! Works for me.

OUT! Wake me when she becomes interesting.

Then, we all need to play “paper doll” again and figure out ways to zhuzh this look up. Obviously, she needs a pair of shoes with more personality than that. Then, she needs to undo that hair. It’s actually quite a pretty little Pinterest ‘do, but it’s more suited for something a bit more overtly romantic in style than this. Probably a gown. This look needs something a little less perfectly polished and princess-like. She’s right on the border of looking a little stern, so something softer in the hair department, we’re thinking. And earrings, of course.

Your turn.

In other judgmental news, the kittens rose up as one and declared Zoe Saldana’s schmatta OUT.

In, I suppose. It’s boring, but there have been so many eyesores lately that I’m grateful for a little pretty dullness.

  • NOLA_gal

Heidi head, inkblot dress, boring shoes. Out….snore….

  • sugarkane105

    Snoozefest. But IN.

  • Athenrein

in. Not “IN!” or “IN” or even “In” but just in.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

      Yeas, just in.

  • ovarB

Out. Boring. “Zhuzh” what a fun word. Zhuzh, zhuzh, zhuzh.

  • tereliz

A metallic shoe, a belt, a bag in a color, some jewelry? Tentative in, I guess.

  • In. 1) I went karaoking with her once. 2) This needs purple, not red. 3) Hair long, swept to the side.

    • ChaCha_70

Umm, need more details on #1 please. 🙂

      • Sadly, the details are sad. About six years ago, a guy in my improv class had a birthday party at a popular karaoke joint. Aside from the class were some friends of his from the LA theater scene which included Cobie. I did not know who she was as Robin Sparkles would not be part of my life for another few months and also in the karaoke club was my ex-work nemesis, also celebrating her birthday with my ex-roommate. It was only because another improv classmate kept poking me to see if that was really Cobie Smulders that I even knew she was there and then got a tirade about how I could be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and not watch How I Met Your Mother. I literally Mosbied that celebrity meeting.

        • Theresa

Call me the spelling nazi, but it’s Cobie, no ‘l’. I always want to say it with the ‘l’ since Cobie is just a weird name, and Smulders smooshes in my mouth.

          • Bless – I corrected it.

          • shirab

I believe she’s Dutch, or one or more of her parents are, and her name is Jacoba (common in the Netherlands) and Cobie is a nickname. Why do I know these things and can’t keep track of the names of heads of state of foreign countries, etc., I couldn’t say.

          • k_dev

As a Kobey – I would like to point out that it is unusual or perhaps unique but weird is a bit harsh.

        • ChaCha_70

Aww, so close yet so far.

        • AnneElliot

Was your ex-work nemesis named Patrice? (Sorry, couldn’t help myself).

    • Rand Ortega

      1)Deets. 2) Please. 3) Now. : )

  • Lori

In, but still in need of better styling.

  • bellafigura1

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In the second picture she looks like Elizabeth McGovern as Lady Grantham with the crazy eyes.

    • Tatiana Luján

I always confuse her with Elizabeth McGovern.

    • Cognitive.Dissonance

      I saw the same thing.

    • melisaurus

Same. I did a double take when I got to the bottom and saw “Colbie Smulders”

  • I think she looks beeyooteeful – IN!

    • Kristin McNamara

You think so? I don’t understand why (it may have something to do with her lips always being colored when I see her on this site) but I think she looks 10239475628 times prettier on the show than she ever does on red carpets. Strictly speaking hair and make-up, that is.

      • I’d never seen the show – but now I’ve seen other pics of her, and you’re right, she does look prettier outside of the RC

  • ashtangajunkie

In, but I’m not happy about it.

  • MW

    In. Boring but very pretty.

  • In, I like her hair and the colors suit her.

  • Rhonda Shore

It’s a bit dull but not horrifying, so IN!

  • This is a good outfit to wear to the bridal shower for a work acquaintance. It’s an IN, but only for the genetics.

  • RebeccaKW

In, she doesn’t look bad. It could be better, but it could be worse. I think the biggest thing is she needs a different hairstyle. The shoes aren’t bad, but boring. A bright color would be great-pink, red, yellow. Something to give some interest. And she needs a bracelet.

  • JauntyJohn

  • MilaXX

How to zhuzh it up; Hair down. Makeup is fine. Add a killer or at least more interesting pair of pumps. Better bag. Either a simple clutch in red (or any color really) and a pair of earrings. Seriously why is jewelry such a no-no when jewelers would love nothing better than a free promo via the latest celeb wearing their over priced baubles?

  • lyssalove31

    secretary with milkmaid hair

  • Henry Maler

    Eh. IN enough.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

OUT. Why bother being a celebrity when the most you can muster up for a public appearance is the sort of outfit that would look demure even by ladies who lunch standards?

  • LongTall_Sally

In, but more colorful accessories would have kicked it up a notch.

  • decormaven

Bor- IN -g. My kingdom for some jewelry…

  • marlie

It’s… fine. Everything “goes.” But this is a celeb look that doesn’t look like there was any professional styling involved. Any of us could have put together a black & white dress, black shoes and clutch, and called it a day. I feel bad calling it an out because there’s nothing wrong with it, but there’s no personality to it either. So… out, I guess.

    • Adriana_Paula

      I second that.

  • CeeQ

    OUT. Boring.

Needs better shoes – something with some bling? Also needs some jewelry? That’s it. I’m out. I’m just opinions, no so much solutions.

  • Imasewsure

Too bad with the thumbnail and my bad eyes I thought this was Juliette Lewis for a minute which would have made this infinitely more interesting. She needs to sex up her hair and pick much better shoes. Can’t vote it out though

    A tepid IN

  • jonnyf8

I think given the fact that its’ kind of a non-event it’s an IN maybe even a WERQ. She clearly put more effort into this than was necessary. She is not lazy!

  • Roz

My paper doll would have–Super high heels, a simple but bold gold piece for her neck, a clutch to match her eyes and a less harsh lipstick.

    ZZZZZZ–this is OUT

  • Julie

What’s weird is that IRL if someone were to wear this to brunch or a wedding she’d be the hottest bitch there. Also, her makeup is on point.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Hate it. The hair and makeup make her features look teeny and pinched. The dress doesn’t make an impression one way or the other, but it also doesn’t counteract the teeny pinched features of Fraulein Smulders who refuses to allow entry to the manor of Baron von Frankenstein/watches over the household of her beloved Rebecca to keep new wives away from Maxim de Winter/protects the woman who lives in Mr.Rochester’s attic/jealously guards the secrets of Hill House.

    • AnneElliot

I’m giving you an enormous WIN for the Rebecca/Jane Eyre/Shirley Jackson references.

      • ThaliaMenninger

        It’s a certain type, that’s for sure.

  • Laura Renee

IN. At least the dress has a pretty pattern, and I like her face and hair.

  • teensmom99

IN and I like the red lips.

  • Sara__B

Out. For being boring, AND unstyled. Put in a little more effort, pretty lady!

  • Lily-Rygh

Does “Fine” count as an “in or out” vote?

  • Sarah

I say out mostly because her makeup is seriously harsh and that dress is like test pattern hypnotically boring and not helping her figure out at all with its columnar unbeltedness.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In only because the dress and the actress are pretty. Mundane as hell, but pretty.

  • CatherineRhodes

IN. Barely. But I think it would be great with a pair of fabulous earrings.

  • Tatiana Luján

  • Constant Reader

In. Sorta boring and safe, but in. As the uncles said, more interesting shoes and a more polished hairstyle would help. And while I passionately love black and white, I really want a pop of color in the handbag here.

  • tallgirl1204

in. There is something about her eye color and the print color that is really kicking it.

  • Nicola Anna Molly Page

I love Cobie, but often despair of her RC choices. So I vote this IN, on a curve. The dress is flattering, but I’d have loved a stronger colour on her (oxblood?) to make those eyes pop. And a cuff.

  • jjjoy

she dresses like Emily van Camp’s character in Revenge. except she’s a comedic actress and not an undercover scorned daughter.

  • Aaminah Khan

In, but that hair isn’t really flattering – it’s doing weird things to the shape of her face and making her jawline look much more pronounced than it actually is.

  • Sabin

Someone tried and thus is the best they could come up with? Out.

  • NoveltyRocker

Out. Hair and dress print don’t read so great at a normal distance and where is ANY jewelry??

  • oklund

    Belt, belt, belt.

  • conniemd

That print looks like what I doodle when I’m sitting bored to death at a seminar. Flower designs with loopy scallops around them. I’m thinking this outfit needed bright colored shoes and some of the retro jewelry from Oscar De La Renta you showed the other day. Out for boring me to death

  • Cameron Turner

IN. This dress is very pretty and has a lovely pattern, is it the right dress for her? Not sure…

  • Bailey Debruynkops

cute hair but the dress is yawnsville, out

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

IN, but only because I’ve had another shitty day (got my car out of the shop yesterday and somebody through a CEMENT PAVER off the balcony onto my car hood, WTF) and I’m a gay man who hates Halloween so yes we exist, and I’ve seen too many body parts on reddit and imgur and sexy/slutty everything and I can’t see her lady bits and she wouldn’t get kicked out of any business I normally patronize, and tonight it’s tequila and earplugs and all the chocolate and world of warcraft and forever alone boredom, just like her dress and a vote for her is a vote for my life, so fuck everybody, IN with tequila shots.

    • Trickytrisha

Reddit is the devil. After 7 years on WOW, I decided it’s the devil also. I’m a slow learner.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Oh but how I love them both.

        • Trickytrisha

          Lol… yep, you got it.

    • formerlyAnon

You, gentle & Bitter Kitten needed endorphins when this you wrote. [I recognize this state. It is the one and only reason I do aerobic exercise, whatever lies I tell my doctor.] Chocolate works. Maybe WoW, I don’t know, having other addictions. Hope you managed to induce a few.

  • melanie0866

Well, if she were one of my friends and I saw her out in this, I’d say, “You look fabulous!” No visible bellybutton, no sideboob, no sheer black panels. Have I set my sights too low?

  • Pterodactyl111

Out for being boring and weird hair and lipstick.

  • SorayaS

Out. I kind of like all the elements (but for the hair, dear god) but she lost it by under-accessorising which leads to the “boring” visual. She is a stunning woman so when she turns up looking matronly I’ve got to vote the look OUT.

  • Trickytrisha

In, but boring for the dress and face. The biggest OUT possible for that hair.

  • bertkeeter

Her styliist needs Viagra or something! ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz……..!

  • kimmeister

In, because I’d rather have boring than tasteless.

  • Joyce VG

yeah IN…she needs a little jewelry though

  • anneland

OUT. It is boring… but that’s not why. Because the hair is awful and wouldn’t go with any outfit.

  • unbornfawn

Boring. The fit is nice and everything from the neck down in fine. Not a fan of the hair. It really needs better styling. No real mistakes. IN.

  • TerryMH

Dull as dishwater – we expect more from our celebrities!

  • Sadie-Ann

In. I have no idea what this event is completely about (people who help oceans, I’d guess), but it seems like one you’d want to be a little more subdued for.

  • amber.

    whatever. in. whatever.

  • crash1212

The dress is absolutely an IN – I love it – the way she’s styled it is an OUT. To make her an IN, simply follow the TLo instructions at the end of their post. Simple!

  • steeg of their own

IN. She’s not committing egregious style errors.

Wake us when there’s something interesting or boundary-pushing to look at.

  • formerlyAnon

In: I’ll be honest, it’s for her face. I am by it compelled. I don’t know why. Also, I am not drinking.

This hair is too lopsided. What volume and interest there is is all on one side of the part. If she wants her hair up, she needs to create some volume all around her face with finger waves or better braids or something.

  • LaSylphide

In, because I like the dress, and really, aside from the kind of odd hair, she looks perfectly fine. Boring isn’t a sin; it’s just … boring.

  • jbontrager78

It’s a cute enough dress, but it needs teal shoes and a silver clutch, or vice versa.

  • E. D.

    Boring but still IN.

  • lizajane1776

In. So pretty. Prettier with a little jewelry.

  • OldPandaDayz

Agree with most of the commenters here: different hair and a pop of color in the bag and shoes might have done wonders. But still an IN because she’s got the looks to make boring at least passable.

  • Janet B

    Boring is always OUT.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

OUT – loathe the hair. And she needs some accessories that pop. Again, the hair is just so so bad I had to say it twice

    • Trickytrisha

My mom has her high school yearbooks from the mid to late 50s – I swear if that closeup pic was in black and white she’d look right at home in the Senior portrait section.

  • Jangle57

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz – what? I fell asleep looking at the pictures, dreaming of Heidi and the goats – IN I guesszzzzzzzzz (she falls back asleep)

  • Reality TV Casting

out out unflattering for a woman with a killer body the current career momentum to fund a better stylist

  • GTrain

Too meh for a celebrity. OUT

  • beebee10

    IN I think it’s pretty.

  • SinisterKid

She NEVAH looks the same. Karma Chameleon, that one.

  • jif

    Feeling generous. In.

  • LJCdoc

    In, but boringly so.

  • quiltrx

OUT, mostly because this dress does not say “gala” to me. It says “pretty for brunch on a special Sunday” to me.

  • mrspotts66

IN. i love it on her.

  • In, because there have been so many who got voted OUT because they looked so godawful. She just looks blah. Frankly, I think my grandmother wore that on one of her many cruises that she took in the ’60s.

Is anyone else sensing that she’s attempting to channel Dita Von Teese here? If so she needs lessons from Dita, who would have slapped on a great pair of sunglasses, a killer hat, red pumps, perhaps some wrist length gloves, and would have been accompanied by two perfectly groomed Scotties on Ralph Lauren leashes.

  • OUTOUTOUT! looks like she patted pancake mix on her face, painted her lips with nail polish, and called it a day.

  • UzrujAna Živković-Debit

the dress needs to be shorter…

  • trisker

BOH-RING! A little jewelry would have helped. It’s all so dull.

  • She’s so beautiful but she dresses like a bore.

  • Irina Ryabchuk

Cobie Smulders for Commander Shepard! Wouldn’t she be awesomely kick-ass in big-screen Mass Effect?

  • Anplica Fiore

I think she looks lovely, although a bit of jewelry would have helped a LOT. In.

  • PeggyOC

In. There’s nothing bad enough here to make it an out. It could be better, but it’s not bad.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

    In, saved by the lipstick.

  • mjude

  • Jessica Freeman

So barely IN. She needs earrings, and a belt. And definitely a better hair-do.

  • AmeliaEve

In. I am enjoying the recent flurry of surprisingly ladylike looks lately. The big problem here is that this is a close-up look, not a red carpet look. In the head shot she looks really beautiful and classic. The fabric reads much better than from a distance, and the neckline creates a perfect portrait frame for her face. The soft up-do looks romantic with it.

Unfortunately, the wide neckline does not balance as well with her overall silhouette and the print gets completely lost in the full-length photos. In either case, she could use some bolder eye makeup and some more colorful accessories, especially earrings. With the simple dress and the up-do, she could rock some of those big de la Renta sparklers no problem.

  • Elodie

You guys need to take a break of something if you think this is boring. Its not rocking my socks off of course but it looks she looks great here. (IN)

  • OffToSeeHim

It’s the stupid expression on her face (why must she ALWAYS try that knowing smile??? dear, you can’t pull that off.) and the awful hair that are terrible. The dress is pretty. It would look better a little shorter, but since she has no idea how to dress I guess she gets a pass on that.

  • swanpride

IN!!! It’s classy, it does her a lot of favours, it is well put together. It is not boring at all, but tastefully understated. And she looks like she feels very comfortable in it.

  • New shoes, new hair and it’s called jewelry Cobie. Jew-el-ry. Look into it. She could have looked, not fashion forward but she could have been killer. She has the bod. She needs to the tude. I want to be a niche stylist – just comediennes. They need to learn how to show their sass and personalities in their style.

  • lalahartma

    In. 🙂

  • I like the dress just fine, but it’s needed more interesting shoes. In.

  • Tracy_Flick

The dress says “simple, cute, modern, if not earth-shattering” but the makeup says “Miss Haversham.” OUT.

  • Danielle

Out until I get some legit info about the Avengers 2.

  • jw_ny

the lipstick and hair killed it. the shoes and clutch aren’t helping any either. I do like the dress, but it needs something….what tho? idk.

  • CC06

I have been wondering about this for a while now, but can someone explain what ‘pinterest’ is? Or why would a hairstyle here would be called a ‘pinterest’ hairdo?

  • shayna61

She’s put together and carrying it well, so In.

  • Maya

in, b/c she has dressed a lot worse

  • Shawn EH

    In, so pretty.

  • Michelle Gennari

Yes definitely “In”. She is pretty, dress is great. I think the shoes are a let down.

  • sagecreek

In. Simple and classy, and oddly enough, I like that hair with this.

  • demidaemon

The whole combination of dress, shoes, hair, and makeup isn’t working for me. She took a perfectly fine dress and styled it to death. Her facial styling is particularly bad. OUT.

  • dschubba

She might as well be going to her cousin’s birthday lunch. Plus, something about this is giving me a “pre-escape Katie Holmes”-vibe.

  • St. Ace

Please, Cobie, STRAIGHTEN YOUR HAIR. I know waves are supposedly feminine and romantic, but they’re just not for you.
