IN or OUT: Chloë Moretz in Vivienne Westwood at the 2013 GLSEN Awards

Posted on October 21, 2013

We’re gonna need a ruling here.

Chloë Moretz attends the 2013 GLSEN Respect Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Vivienne Westwood polka-dot strapless dress accessorized with belt and sandals by Saint Laurent and Husam el Odeh jewelry.

Pretty Princess or High-End Trashbag? Kittens make the call.

Vote Now!

IN! I love a young star willing to take a fashion risk! Huzzah! Huzzah, I say!

OUT! Honey, I love you, but you’re too short for that dress. And besides, it’s a pile of upholstery fabric loosely stitched together.

Julianna Margulies’ cruise director getup was voted IN, which surprised us.

  • OUT. Hot mess.

  • RussellH88

    Too much dress for her.

    • Lucía Gavello

    • Nelliebelle1197

Pack it up and send it to HBC so it can be worn properly askance

  • Kristalbailey

IN. Only she could pull off that kind of look.

  • Diesel von Trapp

    out, she looks wadded up.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

    • Introspective

folded napkin monstrosity. you tried but sadly, out.

  • Fifi LaRoux

I love that she is willing to take a risk, but this is too much. OUT

  • willworktomorrow

This reminds me of when I used to wrap a piece of fabric around my Barbie, tie it with a piece of yarn, and call it a dress.

    • Darcy H

Well crap, now that’s all I can see.

    • random_poster

Yes! And for that it is definitely OUT.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Also, “a lazy shortcut during the Project Runway ‘Unconventional Challenge’.”

    • Introspective

win cause i forgot how often i did that shit. love you for taking me down memory lane.

  • seelebrennt

OUT. that dress looks like a mistake.

  • maybe if it was shorter? It just makes her look stumpy.

    • ampg

Or if she were six inches taller. I think she’s almost there on the “pulling it off” front, but the length issue is insurmountable.

  • paginatrix

Pretty princess wearing a high-end trash bag.

  • JulieK

Out. Fancy paper bag. Love her makeup though.

  • Karen Belgrad

Neck-up: Rachel McAdams in the Notebook

Neck Down: What happens when the curtains aren’t available on the Carol Burnett show. (they went with the table cloth)

  • Nancer

That dress is all kinds of dreckitude. Yuck!

  • Imasewsure

It’s a tepid IN for me. Too much dress but not awful enough for an out. Points for being different. Great hair and makeup

  • Let’s see. The color does nothing for her. The shape does nothing for her. The shoes look painful. The belt just looks silly. I’m going with out.

  • neofashionista

  • homofascist

    OUT. WAY too much…

  • Lou2

Out – Scarlet O’Hara called and wants her drapes back.

  • another_laura

Out, for the reasons so well stated by T Lo.

  • That thing looks like someone wadded it up and threw it at her, and somehow it just stuck.

  • LadyCelia

Perfect for recovering my classic 1950’s armchair!

  • tereliz

Upholstery fabric, indeed. Word for word OUT. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love that she takes such risks.

  • OUT! Honey, I love you, but you’re too short for that dress. And besides, it’s a pile of upholstery fabric loosely stitched together.

  • TraciRai

It looks suspiciously like the Little Mermaid’s dress that was crafted out of a sail and some rope, and designed by a crab. OUT.

  • TonyGo

  • MW

I like the idea ut the proportions are all wrong. OUT.

  • dellagraceslife

Out! I vote she sends it to HBC- just her kind of dress.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

OUT. Is that a dress ‘cuz it’s really hard to tell.

  • Lilithcat

    It looks sloppy.

  • tired_mommy

Out. All that fabric distorts her body–she looks wider and shorter than she really is.

  • MightyMarshal

This is one if those dresses that would sing on her in an editorial but looks crazy on her on a red carpet.

  • fiddlecub

Send this to Helena Bonham Carter. Chloe? This isn’t your dress.

  • filmcricket

    Out. It’s wearing her.

  • tarqueeny

    Definitely OUT.
The colour is awful and really drains her, if it had more of a vibrant colour she may have been able to pull it of. However, the ruffled lining at the top would definitely need to go.

  • OUT. Way too old and dowdy for her.

  • Jerrica Benton is getting hers tonight. In!

  • StarburstLady

OUT… even if it that dress managed to work through its identity crisis, I think it would be too mature looking for Chloe. I have some hopes that SJP could pull it off, but not Chloe here.

  • No. No no no no. Not even close.

  • SewingSiren

it’s not a pretty princess dress, but who ever picked it for her thought it was , and they accessorized it as if it were. Chloe could pull it off with black tights and Dr. Martins and maybe cropped denim jacket.

    • formerlyAnon

Brilliant styling! I thought it was hopeless till you showed me it was not in one crisp sentence.

  • Anplica Fiore

    OUT!!! Way too overworked

  • hillmad

  • Cathy S

Nooooooooo. Really it just looks like someone threw fabric at her and just pinned it wherever they felt like it.

  • Adrianna Grężak

  • kcnitch

Out. That dress is a mess.

  • marlie

OUT. Chloe has grown on me quite a bit, but she’s just not ready for this dress. Though her hair and makeup are pretty.

  • imspinningaround

The way many of you feel about Stella McCartney, I feel about Vivienne Westwood. This is ridiculous. It makes a slip of a girl look like Miss Havisham’s divan.

  • Lizzyisi

I give it an IN but I find myself with nothing to say to defend my position.

  • Laura Renee

OUT, because your description is too accurate. It isn’t fitted at all on her.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

OUT – the hair and belt are killing the dress.

  • Maluca

No. That dress is just ugly and it doesn’t look right on her.

  • Katesymae

Out, but she shares the blame with VW because the dress is entirely too stiff.

  • BayTampaBay

OUT!!! It makes her look fat!

I like the dress but not on her….she is too short to pull off that amount of dress.

  • Town

Out. There’s no reason this girl, who looks like a size 2 at most, should be looking like a table top hair dryer bonnet.

  • teensmom99

OUT. Wanted to say it’s what the kids are wearing–because I do feel the kids can get away with a napkin better than the rest of us. But not this napkin. And I have to confess that the fabric looks a little too much like my family’s living room window treatments. . . .

  • rissa42210

    Out. But, yay, fashion risk!

  • Jenna Marie

Out. Trashy Madonna comes to mind.

  • gabbilevy

    Out. Awful.

  • Anne

It reminds me of the bit in The Little Mermaid when Ariel gets her legs and they have to wrap her in a sack.

  • MaggieMae

  • lalahartma

    Out, that looks terrible.

  • NMMagpie

    Belted bedsheet. OUT.

  • Daryl Lancaster

Out. She looks like she woke up and wrapped herself in the coverlet.

  • Sara__B

I’m surprised you need a ruling. OUT!

  • iwittmann

Out! It’s a mess and really need a hem.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

OUT. pilgrim hair + a hem with a personality disorder = not working for my eyes.

  • Hallie

hate it. also, she needs to wipe that smirk off her face.

  • Stella Zawistowski

    Oh god. SO unflattering. OUT.

  • Inês Martins

Out, she is too petite size for this much dress!

  • trisker

OUT. Too bad, too, because it could have been a pretty dress if there weren’t so MUCH going on…

  • ewes_urn_aim

This is what she should’ve worn to her Carrie premiere opening; a fucked-up prom dress.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“They’re all going to laugh at you!”

  • Anna Vasquez

Hair and makeup are lovely. Dress is too long. She needs to hear the truth about her height, George Sanders-style.

    • marlie

She and Hayden Panetierre (and a host of other petite ladystars) need to hear the truth about how to dress for their height.

  • Ashleigh

Box it up and ship it off to Helena Bonham Carter

  • Jennifer McGuire

Out. Upholstery fabric – right on target.

  • Judy_S

It would be IN if she found it at a thrift shop, but not if she paid a mint for it or chose it from among a group of designer dresses. Ergo OUT.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

OUT–it’s like when the Little Mermaid first crawled out of the sea and wrapped the sail around her.

  • Kinda fun, kinda a mess. I like the colour. She looks like she likes it, which makes it fun.

  • Adriana

Really pretty hair and makeup but Westwood tends to look like randomly folded and stitched fabric more often than not. OUT.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    OUT. Your comments, exactly.

  • Lori

Out. I kind of like the fabric, but the top has way too much going on and ends up looking like an accident and the bottom is too long.

  • lobsterlen

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Call me crazy, but this looks like a dress Jem would’ve worn in the Battle of the Bands versus the Misfits… (in for Jem, OUT for Chloe due to lack of pink lightening bolt make up/not tall enough to make dress work)

  • MilaXX

OUT! everything South of the neck is awful! Dress is too big, too long and too mature for her. It looks like a bolt of fabric wrapped around her and belted. She’s trying hard to sell this look and it just ain’t working.

  • Snailstsichr

OUT for all the reasons you mentioned.

  • Trashbag! It looks absolutely hideous.

  • crash1212

OUT. I think there was an interesting idea here, and I don’t hate the fabric, it just didn’t quite come together. And those are the entirely wrong choice for shoes.

  • Pannyx

Out. I’m not sure anyone can pull that off.

  • Violentcello

I like the bodice a lot, but very much dislike the skirt: too long, too weird, and is it trimmed with a curtain tie? I like the makeup and the simple hair, though. Can she be in and out at the same time?

  • Fanny_Trollope

    No. That is all.

  • Leah Elzinga

OUT. Too much dress for that little princess.

  • OUT – I honestly feel that Vivienne Westwood is for grownup girls.

    • marlie

Yep. Chloe’s not “ready” for a dress like this yet.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

OUT! High end trash bag for sure.

  • amanda siegelson

    o.m.g. that is horrible.

  • Yeah, no. OUT.

  • Jenny Moss

Out. She’s too young and innocent-looking for Vivi.

  • Aaminah Khan

    Hello, Stumpy. OUT.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT. I kind of like the bodice, but the skirt doesn’t live up to it. Besides being generally unimaginative and unflattering, it’s poorly pressed. Her grooming is basically appropriate but the hair looks kind of unfinished. Curl or do not curl. There is no try.

  • Shawn EH

1940s starlet updated for the twenty-teens! Baby Liz Taylor realness! In!

  • sagecreek

OUT. Is there any question? It looks like she wrapped herself in a tablecloth and then belted it. OUT OUT OUT.

    • Tatiana Luján

you can apply the same statement to 99% of Westwood’s dresses.

  • Tatiana Luján

In. I really like that hairdo and that soft pink on her. The black accents keep ir from being too twee.
I generally dislike the sillouettes and finishing of the Westwood dresses, they look as if you had rolled in your courtains, stapled them and came out to the street.

  • Emily Roach

IN, because her head is so well done!

  • Synnamin

hummm…. tough call, but I’m giving it an IN

    • sagecreek

Not to pile on, but would you mind saying why?

      • Synnamin

Westwood can be hard to pull off (unless you’re HBC), and I really appreciate that she’s wearing it and looks like she’s having a lovely time… even though it’s close to wearing her. The hair’s great, and the color compliments her. And I’m intrigued by the edging details on the dress.

It’s a bit fallen-crumpled-hotel-curtain-in-the-corner, but she’s able to give it enough sass that it works for me.

        • sagecreek

        • marlie

I *love* that edging detail. I still think this dress is ‘out’ for Chloe, but it has some really interesting elements.

  • altalinda

    Trashbag, out.

  • conniemd

Call me crazy, but that dress on a young girl just sang to me, with the exception of the mullet back panel. I have no idea why, but IN.

  • Mudskipper

    out. OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LJCdoc

    Out. She’s been stumpified.

  • ovarB

Out!! This is what happens when “HGTV’s Next Design Star” has a run-in with “Project Runway.” It is “A Runaway Project for a Star with no Design!!”

  • Deedles

No. Absolutely not. HBC is about the only person who can pull-off a dress like this.

  • Trickytrisha

A semi-IN for me. Yeah, I’m waffling, but her hair, face, attitude all work. If she was 10 inches taller, the dress would work too (yeah, I know she’s 5’5″). That dress is a pretty typical Westwood – who appears to design clothing for aliens and HBC.

  • boweryboy

Nice try, but she does not have the gravitas to pull off a Westwood.

Hell, very few ladystars do (Helena Bonham Carter notwithstanding – bitch was born to wear Westwood).

  • Rhonda Shore

OUT. It’s really a mess, especially from the front.

  • GillianHolroyd

Google says she’s 5’5″ but the stupid camera angle makes her look much shorter. Look at the size of her arm vs the size of her head and feet in that last photo, Mr Wrong Lens is at it again. Nice hair and makeup though.

  • Watts

OUT. It’s weird to say she’s almost a skosh too old for this dress. Not that I like the dress. But I’d buy it more on Quvenzhané Wallis or Kiernan Shipka.

  • TropiCarla

I was truly ready to give this an In as the picture loaded — fully expecting that dress to stop at or above the knee.
Ah well, there are greater tragedies in life.
    Makeup looks great though!

  • mjude

    sorry little one……OUT

  • jahphotogal

    In. She looks super cute.

  • jen

    Uf, no! Out!

  • alyce1213

OUT. Why is this even up for a vote?
This isn’t a fashion risk, it appears to be a fashion pretension.

  • melanie0866

    OUT. Baggy and unflattering.

  • frannyprof

OUT. Return HBC’s stylist back to HBC. Immediately.

  • ConnieBV

Dress is OUT, face is IN.

  • Out, my darling. Out.

  • gsk241

She’s adorable, but that is altogether too much dress for her. OUT for trying to steal HBC’s style.

  • fashionzombie

No, no no. OUT. Send it off to Helena Bonham Carter.

  • Danielle West

Out. Something’s not working here. it’s either the hair, lack of makeup, or the hem. Or it could be a combination of all three.

  • nannypoo

Her face looks pretty but that dress is butt ugly.

  • Golfkat

In! Exclusive Parisian wrapping paper! She looks cute!

  • AlisonS

As a short person myself I hate when you two say this BUT, she’s entirely too short to pull this off. OUT

  • elizonthelam

Would love it to be just a bit shorter, but definitely NOT a trash bag. IN.

  • Vainte

Chloe. go spend a week with Kiernan Shipka and report back.

  • Jangle57

OUT – I think that’s too unstructured for anyone to look good in it

  • amanda lynn

  • SouthernGirlRena

That is just all kinds of awful. I do think the fabric, if unwadded and smoothed out, would be fabulous on a quirky high-back chair painted black. So if it were a chair – IN, as a dress, OUT.

  • lesmaha

Out!! Looks like a home-ec project gone wrong!!

  • Heather

In. Even though I think the bottom third of that dress is a bit overwhelming for her tiny self. I like the look from the top to her hips, past that is icky.

  • nomoreprinces

This dress is what happens when designers take their inspiration from kittens playing with toilet paper.

  • YoungSally

Well – she doesn’t seem all that happy about it – at least in the first photo.

  • Vodeeodoe

She is gorgeous, but that dress: 1) is not that great, kind of fabric-y in a bad way, 2) is not the right color for her without makeup to complete a look, 3) will inspire her anger the minute someone tells her that this dress makes her look like the wholesome, pretty 16 year old that she actually is.

  • Dagney

no. no…..However, why didn’t Tina Fey wear THIS dress instead of that depressing black drabby lace crap? Tina could rock this.

  • Aidan B

OUT. I love Westwood, but Chloe’s not mature enough for it. She looks like she’s playing dress-up in her mom’s closet.

    • anyalama

Yeah, Vivienne Westwood is not for children.

  • Bailey Debruynkops

in because she’s showing attitude & her hair is cute

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Out. Too long, too messy. I do love her hair though.

  • ChelseaNH

If she had borrowed the big-wind hairstyle from Dom’s finale collection, I would have loved her forever, upholstery fabric bedamned.

  • lrober03

Out. She’s giving good face, but that dress is overwhelming her

  • rebeemoon

Oh, soo OUT. Even Carol Burnett, in that classic Gone with the Wind skit, looked better when she yanked down the drapes and promptly wore them.

  • littlemac8

OUT. She is too young to carry off a complicated dress like that and it overwhelms her.

  • Celeste

That is a hot mess. It would have been auf’d in a millisecond on Project Runway.

  • Katie

Too much dress for her. Out.

  • Violina23

High end trash bag… But her hair and makeup is adorable!

  • Bethany Fairbrother

Out! Too much dress for such a little girl.

  • demidaemon

I’m going to say OUT, based on the fact that this looks lumpy and stumpifying.

  • formerlyAnon

Neither princess nor trashbag, Unmade Bed. OUT

She’s *almost* adorable enough to get away with it, but this is neither horseshoes nor hand grenades. Like her hair.

  • Sara Hottman

    Edgy. Love it. IN.

  • jw_ny

Not her color and she doesn’t have the stature and presence to pull off wearing this. It’s kind of a jumbled mess too…but some ladies can rock an unconventional look like this…not her tho.

  • steeg of their own

This is totally the wrong length for her, and even the great hair and makeup can’t hide the fact that she’s strapped an oddly-starched tablecloth around herself.

  • MzzPants

    Homemade toga. OUT.

  • kimmeister

OUT. She is clearly not one of those rare people who “could look good in a burlap sack” or in a sack of any other material.

  • SaraQ

That looks like the dress the seagull designed for Ariel in the Little Mermaid, but instead of a sailcloth, he found some old upholstery. Out.

  • LaSylphide

Looks like a nice dress that my cats ripped to shreds; then they felt guilty and tried to put it back together. Lacking opposing thumbs, they were unsuccessful. Out.

  • AndreaSkates

Out. It looks like it was made by a five year old who wadded up wrapping paper and held onto her dolly’s body with a black twisty tie.

  • Lily-Rygh

OUT. She has nowhere near the attitude for this dress. Besides, this is pretty much a flagship Westwood dress, which means only Queen HBC can truly bring it to life as it was intended.

  • amber.

  • somebody blonde

Out. The bodice is fine, but the skirt looks like an incredible mess and does absolutely nothing for her.

  • fnarf

NO strapless until you turn 18, sweetie.

  • solidcurrency

I can’t tell if it’s in desperate need of ironing or it’s supposed to look that way, but either way she’s OUT.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Slopjar. OUT.

  • carolie_king

She is SO very cute, but that dress is not working. OUT.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

  • Liana Brooks

OUT – She’s pretty, the dress is fugly.

  • KayEmWhy

She’s young I’ll give her a pass. IN

  • Trisha26

    OUT. Rumpled bed sheet.

  • Julie Chase

    GAH. Out.

  • sleepycat

  • If only it were in her size.

  • Reality TV Casting

out yuck ahir and makeup are gorge though

  • siriuslover

Based on your descriptions of the dress themselves, I’ll go with out.

  • bertkeeter

That dress needs a Dita Von Tesse voluptuousness to make it sing!

  • GTrain

    OUT. Too much for her

  • Samuel Joesph Donovan

  • ItsDicey

    Too much upholstery. OUT.

  • Claudia

Really out. She’s so pretty, though!

  • Nicole Little

    Frumpy. Out

  • SorayaS

She’s done her best with it but, oh honey, no. OUT.

  • Sarah Souffriau

    Out. Out. Out!

  • Monabel

That’s a dress for a stunning middle aged woman. Like me.

  • kmk05

Dress, nope nope nope nope. But by Jove her face, makeup and hair are perfection. I don’t think I’ve ever thought she was as beautiful as in this picture (especially the one where she smiles). Therefore, a reluctant IN.

  • OUT. Put mommy’s new wave prom dress away, and stop with the duck lips.

  • lundibleu

OUT. I think she could pull off Westwood quite nicely, given the right clothes and the right styling. This is neither of those things though, this dress needs someone a little broader.

Chloe, go and talk to Eccentric Auntie Helena and ask her how it should be done…

  • SHE looks better than usual—no pouting “duck lips” pose—but that Westwood is an abomination. Sorry, honey, to do this to you at such a tender and vulnerable age, but OUT.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out, she doesn’t have the right attitude to pull it off. And this is not a dress for dainty shoes.

  • twocee

    Out out damn spot.

  • Bernadette

Way too much dress for her, looks like it could slump right off.

  • carnush

Could be great on someone else. OUT.

  • CeeQ

  • definitely out. I like the fabric, but the cut is weird.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Am I too late? IN anyway.

  • Sarah

A shame that it’s OUT because her hair looks pretty.

  • Danielle

Everything from the collarbones down is a mess. OUT.

  • Miranda Reseigh

  • Angela Cotsones Shea

I wonder how many times she had to stick her pinky toe back under that strap.

  • Out. Project Runway Nightmare.

  • DominoEstella

A dress like this requires a red lip.

  • Beverly Nash

Unflattering and it shows on her face.

  • out. a big fashion dress on a too little girl.

  • NinjaCate

Out. OOOOUUUUTTTT. Makeup is gorg though!

  • ThesisMonkey

hahaha as if, dear uncles, you didn’t know which way this was gonna go! OUT!

  • GinaGeo

Such a hideous fabric. It reminds me of French Bistro chairs.

  • lilazander

IN. It’s tough dress and I like she’s taking the risk.

  • RoseJB

OUT. It could have worked had it been shorter, though.

  • Akmall Razlan

vivienne westwood is not for her, her designs are too unique for Chloe personality. She should try Betsy Johnson, shes more feminine than Westwoods.

  • 30frames

    Origami bath towel

  • Almost in! She could rock the punk-princess look, but the dress would pop in a color that went better with her skin tone than that pale pink.
