Heidi Klum at Truly Scrumptious Fashion Show

Posted on October 08, 2013

You know that adage, “When someone tells you who they are, believe them?” It applies to personal style as well.

Heidi made her name modeling bras and panties in angel wings. Then she furthered her brand by wearing tight little dresses on Project Runway through 12 seasons. And as her star has risen and her public appearances become more frequent and thus more polished, she revealed a facility for wearing dazzling, glittering, slinky gowns on the red carpet. No one could really accuse of her being stylishly chic with a straight face, but she certainly knows how to leverage her assets and get attention.

But:

Heidi Klum presents her holiday Truly Scrumptious children’s clothing collection for Babies R Us during Kids Fashion Week in New York City in an Anne Valérie Hash jacket paired with a Joie top, The Row leggings, and Saint Laurent pumps.

When she wants to do the Chic Mommy thing, she nails it almost every single time. It really is her look and it tells you something about her. All that other stuff is costume. This is who she is.

She looks great. She and Gwen Stefani are the masters of really bringing a sense of style to their everyday mommywear.

    • http://ayearofmommyhood.blogspot.com/ Tabby_abby

The kind of mommy styleI aspire to have.

    • Kate Andrews

Well, and it’s actually an outfit many of us would look good in, with tweaks here and there for coloring and shape. Cute.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

She really does look great. It’s nice to see her in an appropriate outfit at an appropriate venue.

      • RussellH88

I would have loved it if she put on some Chitty Chitty Bang Bang drag.

Maybe she wants to save the Child Catcher for Halloween?

        • AnguaVonUberwald

I started singing that song as soon as I saw the title of this post.

    • leahpapa

I would wear this, which is something I have never before said about Heidi Klum’s attire. (Sidebar: Some of the Truly Scrumptious stuff is quite adorable, but kiddie fashion shows creep me out.)

      • Jacob Bowen

Hahahaha I used to walk in kiddie fashion shows (and I have the vhs tapes to prove it) and sometimes they are a bit creepy.

    • alyce1213

I love everything. Normally, I don’t go for spike heels with skinny pants, to me it’s kind of honky-tonk, but Heidi nailed it with this look — head to toe perfect.

      • marlie

She manages to make this look rocker-chic, instead of honky tonk. But yes, it’s a very fine line sometimes.

    • another_laura

She looks just so very effortless and right in this.

      • Rhonda Shore

and she looks so much better with a light lipstick color…

    • MilaXX

She often looks like this out and about with her kids as well. I think the slinky, shiny stuff is what in Heidi’s mind, is what you wear when dressed up

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Here’s how I think of it – remember on S10 how Dmitry’s eyes used to just travel up and down her body when she’d come out onto the runway? That’s how you know you’re wearing something too short and too tight – when you get that kind of an eyeball!

        • Winter_White

I completely misread this the first time, and thought you were suggesting that we should all check with Dmitry after we get dressed up, to see if he gives us the eyeball. It didn’t even sound like a bad idea. ;)

          • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, no no, sorry! LOL! No, she’d come out on the runway to tell them the challenge, and he would just sloooowly eyeball her up and down.

            • Winter_White

How funny — I never noticed that! Good old Dmitry… (I have seen the roaming eyes and glazed-over expressions of the male Top Chef contestants when Padma walks into the room.)

            • demidaemon

I think–for the Top Chef contestants, at least, due to the prevalence of straight men–it is a sign of all the blood rushing from their head to you know where.

            • Winter_White

I think you’re right. :) Hope they’re given a little time to recover before they have to pick up those huge sharp knives.

            • demidaemon

Heh. I see what you did there.

    • hughman

This week in People Magazine – Mesh Netting : Balloons or Heidi. Who wore it best?

    • tereliz

THIS is how I want Heidi to look ALL THE TIME. Love that top.

    • terpsichory

Loving the matte nail polish and her manicure in general. *looks critically at own cuticles*

      • kimmeister

I noticed the matte polish too! Where is it sold, I’ve never come across it?

        • Celandine1

Matte nail polish was all the rage a few years ago. Not sure if you can still find a good selection but you should be able to find matte finish top coats. Try Ulta, I saw some there last month.

    • mmebam

I wish she would channel this for her red carpet looks, as well. She looks great.

    • oatmealpie

I have never wanted matte nail polish until now. Such is the power of a supermodel.

      • kimmeister

I only became aware of its existence this summer, when I saw someone with a “French manicure” in which the whole nail was matte black and the “tip” was glossy black. It looked awesome, even though I don’t like black nail polish.

    • kipper

What is it about her – always beautiful face – that looks EXTRA lovely here? What is different – she seems so happy and very youthful…

      • SouthernGirlRena

I think she always looks best when she wears her hair down and wavy like this too. But I agree, happy is the best accessory.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I was just struck by how stunning Heidi really is when I looked at these photos.

      • Sunraya

I thought so too, and just commented on it as well. She really is one of the most beautiful women in the public eye.

    • Imasewsure

She always looks great in her German boho chic Mommy togs.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      She looks great.

What’s really blowing my skirt up is the manicure. I love longer nails and dark colors, but the trend has been blunt nails while wearing dark colors. I’m happy to see other folks are coming around to a little length with their vamp colors. Leave it to nails to be the only place where I am ahead of the pack by having been doing my own thing.

      • alyce1213

I’m with you. When my nails are shorter I go for sheer light colors or clear, and dark polish only when they’re longer. To me, dark vampy colors on short nails looks stubby. Heidi seems to always have a nice manicure on her beautiful hands.

        • marlie

This is why I haven’t been wearing dark colors, as much as I like them.

        • snarkykitten

I wasn’t aware there was a “rule” for nail color

          • alyce1213

It’s not a rule, just my personal preference, which is clear from my post.

    • zenobar

She looks lovely here. But I just can’t get on board with matte nail polish in general – it looks like someone spilled a bottle of nail polish remover on a fresh mani and let it sit.

      • ItsDicey

I dunno. I like it. Sometimes, anyway.

    • Shamrockjulie

Not loving it. It does not look like KLUM. She is someone who is made for short shiny skirts so go for it!. I also can’t understand that Lee Press-on manicure.

      • marlie

But short and shiny isn’t called for all of the time. Plus, I can imagine that it also gets tiresome after a while, even for Heidi.

        • demidaemon

Oh agreed. I mean, it’s pretty undeniable that she looks awesome here and–most importantly, as TLo has taught us–appropriate for the venue. Tight, short, and shiny would have been a major faux pas, both fashion and business-wise.

    • marlie

I love everything about this outfit. Head to toe, she looks fabulous.

    • bertkeeter

      Heidi IS beautiful!

      • alyce1213

She really is, and it’s so much more obvious when she’s not too fahpootzed. Less is more when you’re that beautiful.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I want that nail color. Matte red berry! (Or is it red wine? Plum?)

      • decormaven

Yes, somebody please identify this polish shade. It’s gorgeous!

      • Winter_White

        Matte Bordeaux, on my monitor.

    • crash1212

This is a WERQ for me. She looks fabulous.

    • Ashleigh

Some Mila Hermanovski leggings would have really kicked this up a notch!! ;)

    • xmixiex

DAMN. She looks fabulous!!!!! Her hair looks especially refreshed. Love that top (the top one… the top top. cardigan thing.)

      • marlie

“I don’t know what it is, but I like it!”

    • boweryboy

It’s also venue appropriate. I would hate to have seen her wearing a gyno-minidress at the reveal of her children’s clothing collection.

    • Joyce VG

      Gorgeous.

    • Frank_821

It’s moments like this that bears reminding that while Heidi may not be another Iman, she has grown to be a significant member of the fashion community and her presence has had an impact. And she has shown herself to be a capable businesswoman

I know a designer who sneers at and disparages Heidi being a judge on PR (They feel the same about Nina). It’s less of a attack on her person but more the idea that as a former model she is not fit nor qualified to judge the work of any designer

      • demidaemon

That’s kind of dumb, considering the impact both models and fashion editors have on a designer’s career. So, I would guess this person only wants designers on the panel, not people who will actually wear, purchase and promote their work?

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She looks comfortable and happy…and that is chic in and of itself.

    • BrooklynBomber

“When someone tells you who they are, believe them?”

YEESH! Totally unrelated, but I had a “thing” with a friend today, and this is exactly what I’ve been trying to tell her. Very freaky to click here and see this.

And you’re right about Heidi. She looks so . . .herself. And by that I mean great. Even though I hate everything she’s wearing

    • d4divine

Love her…she’s funny, smart…a little bitchy…and appears to be a kind person

    • macwell

      OK, T&L – if you say so….LOL!! ;)

    • bellafigura1

Totally on target observations. This is who she is, and she looks great.

    • Diego!

She looks amazing!!! The best I’ve seen in her in a long time. She shines when she keeps it simple.

    • largishbearishAtlish

now that I have noticed the dark red nail polish its all I see…sigh

    • Cathy S

I love that. She looks great.

    • Sunraya

She always looks fabulous when casually dressed. Well, except for that caftan-y thing last year. I am always stunned at just how beautiful she is. I think she gives Charlize Theron a real run for her money for Most Beautiful Woman Alive.

    • penguin momma

Love the look overall, but I became fixated on the strange wisps of hair at the top of her forehead. What is that? Its not bangs, just sad little wisps of brown hair that draw attention to her roots as well.

    • penguin momma

Love the nails! Covet the rings! Agree that she does the Chic Mommy thing incredibly well. But I’m fixated on her hairline. What IS that on her forehead? Those tiny wisps of brown hair– what’s that about? In the longer shots, it looks a little like one of the kids scribbled on her head with a brown crayon. Or am I nuts?

    • formerlyAnon

She does look great. (& I love your theory.)

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

That was my first thought, too. Good on ya, Frau Heidi.
