Haillee Steinfeld at the Louis Vuitton Spring 2014 Show

Posted on October 03, 2013

You’ve really gotta hand it to a 16-year-old who figures out how to do the Lolita thing and make it look chic.

Haille Steinfeld attends the Louis Vuitton Spring 2014 show in Paris.

And by “figure it out,” we mean, “put on the clothes picked out for her.” Love the look. It’s sexy without being sleazy. And the dress looks fantastic on her.

sexy but not sleazy, and also appropriately youthful without being twee. love this on her. nailed!

    • alyce1213

Adorable. The sparkly shoes are a nice touch.

      • mshesterp

The first thing I thought was “totes adorbs.” And then I hated myself straight for 2 minutes. But seriously. Totes adorbs. Gah, I’m awful.

    • lexilexi

      Who is her stylist? Fab!!

      • lexilexi

Reply to myself. Apparently her stylists are Kemal Harris and Karla Welch, who also work for:

Olivia Wilde, Hailee Steinfeld, Zooey Deschanel, Stacy Keibler, Paula Patton. Now that’s range.

        • PastryGoddess

Paula Patton…and Hailee Steinfeld. I may need a fainting couch soon

          • quiltrx

Obviously they only style Paula when they’re off their meds.

          • ankali

That’s actually a pretty interesting snapshot. Those people are all so different in terms of style; it’s nice to see that the stylists do seem to take personality into account when they dress their stars.

            • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

But it also shows they may have issues with telling people, kindly but firmly, NO. Because if I were PP’s stylist I would worry about the way my work was received.

            • ankali

Maybe her personality is awful and their work not only reflects her accurately, but serves her right.

Wow, I had kind of a bad day. Sorry, Paula Patton! I’ve no good reason to think you’re not delightful!

        • adnama79

          Olivia Wilde wears clothes?

        • sekushinonyanko

I think Hailee, Stacy and Olivia look consistently great in terms of style. And Zooey usually looks nice, if a bit twee. But that Paula… I have to guess based on that list that they are not OCD about picking out all of someone’s pieces and let the stars have a lot of input. Either that or Paula goes TIGHTER OR I SWITCH STYLISTS! whenever they present her with something.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Fun dress. I’d love a little jewelry here.

    • Jacquelyn

OMG I want this entire look.

      • sweetestsith

Ditto! I have 10 years on her, and would still at least try to wear that. Love it from tip to toe, she looks fabulous.

        • Heather

I think I could pull off the dress, but not with over-the-knee socks and sparkly shoes. On Haylee here, the whole look is adorable.

        • filmcricket

I have more than 20 years on her, and am bewailing the fact that I was never able to pull this off at a time when it was age-appropriate. The last time all this was in style was about 20 years ago too, sniff.

    • Call me Bee

She looks very chic, but the tiny white purse is so incongruous.

    • hughman

      To Sir, With Love

    • ChaCha_70

      This is perfection.

    • SophieCollier

I’d like to see some sort of necklace on her, but otherwise, it’s a nice look, although the boat neck and puckering over the breasts makes it almost look like its on backwards.

    • AmeliaEve

BAM! Mary Janes with thigh highs. This is what Katy Perry needed last week with the red plaid suit instead of those odd booties.

    • nannypoo

She’s really so fabulous. I think I don’t like the stockings, but I love it anyway.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Considering my age, it’s entirely scandalous that I want to steal this look.

      • Denise Plank

        I want to as well!

    • Trisha26

Based on the comments below I see I’m a minority of one so far. She looks cute, but that’s the issue. She’s not slutty or sexualized, but she’s 16 and looks 12.

    • Blair Sylvester

the bag looks a bit like a pencil case especially with that outfit

    • decormaven

Good look for a young gal. Glad she kept it relatively simple.

    • Imasewsure

      That dress is soooooo cute

    • MilaXX

Cute! She hit just the right note. I don’t even mind that she had help. many of the celebs who still make major missteps have help.but not everyone gets it right.

    • carpediva

Sexy but not sleazy… I still can’t help but feel that that’s not a good thing when she’s just 16. I mean, the literal definition of the word is “sexually attractive or exciting.” And the literal definition of “16” is “still a kid.”

FWIW, I think she looks absolutely adorable as opposed to sexy, so it’s not the outfit that’s squicking me. I think I just wish our beloved Uncles had left that sentence out.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i’ll side with our fearless leaders. in california, 16 is the age of legal consent, and lets be honest, most kids are sexually active by then. i don’t find it inappropriate to refer to a sixteen year old as sexy.

        • carpediva

Based on the news lately, I don’t know that our fearless leaders have a clue. :)

          • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i was referring to TLo as our fearless leaders. what news? i’m confused here.

            • carpediva

LOL!That verbiage, combined with the “legal consent” line made me think you were talking about politicians! 😀

        • livesarah

Also, a good deal of 16-year-olds *want* to dress to look sexy. It just doesn’t often go this well, striking that awkward balance between over-mature/sexy and looking prepubescent. Props to her and her stylists!

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Sorry, but we can’t disagree strongly enough on that one. Sixteen year olds are not children and are, in fact, sexually mature. There’s nothing wrong with a kid that age wanting to express their sexual side.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

There was a time when I’d completely agree. Then I had daughters. I am a fairly progressive parent, we treat sex very frankly, etc. I still don’t want anyone calling my sixteen year old sexy, even when I can objectively tell you that, yes, she can certainly be. It’s just a protective instinct.

          • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

I understand, but the fact remains, whether parents like hearing it or not, 16-year-olds are sexual beings and most of them on some level want to be seen that way, just like most adults do at various times in their life. For anyone who’s not Hailee’s parents, I don’t think there’s any value in pretending otherwise here. Especially since we’re talking about a young movie star at a public event.

            • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

It’s shocking what a cranky, prude, clean freak, becoming a parent turned me into. I should have stuck to cats. Happy Friday, TLo.

          • poggi

I think I get where you are coming from. I have a daughter as well, and I am hoping when she hits that age I can be okay with her wanting to and looking sexy. One difference to me, at least now, is I’d like to think that she would be dressing sexy in ways that made her feel attractive and confident and not dressing ‘sexy’ because she has to or so that people will like her. I am not sure there are hard and fast rules, and I guess a lot of it is perception. But some things that celebrities wear, even grown women, make me uncomfortable because it seems more exploitative or desperate rather than an external expression of how they feel. It seems more like it comes from a place of powerlessness rather than a deliberate and empowered choice. I guess the term and the state of being sexy can have both negative and positive connotations.

All that said, this outfit seems like it makes her feel great and confident– sexy in a good way. However all of this is academic for me at the moment so I may change my tune in a few years.

    • Aidan B

I LOVE THIS. She looks fantastic and I am oozing jealousy. I want everything she’s wearing.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Beautiful, young and polished. The opposite of blaringly obvious, youth-seeking, and will polish your knob for attention.

    • demidaemon

    • quiltrx

VERY cute dress, and a great, put-together look.

    • kimmeister

I love this except for the neckline/sleeves. I find them broadening.

    • ankali

I think this is my favorite look of hers ever. Fabulous ensemble for her, and holy shit is she making those bangs work.

    • andreawey

      dress is super cute

    • Lilak

Oh boy . . . I am a total outlier here (except in the matter of the pencil-case purse?). The legs & shoes are the only things I’m on board with.

The dress gives her an exaggerated soft-and-fleshy look — maybe it’s the sleeves/neckline and the graduated optical pattern in the middle — maybe it’s not helped by makeup that’s made her features disappear — I know it’s not helped by the oily-looking bangs. Maybe my brain has a problem coordinating her skin tone, her hair color, and this particular black and white fabric.

I love her to pieces … but I hardly recognized her here.

    • Jeremiah Capacillo

      Rachel Berry realness

    • Trickytrisha

Stellar look for an outstanding young woman. Cannot wait to follow her journey through the ins and outs of celebrity.

    • ItsDicey

Dear god, she looks freakin’ amazing! So chic.

    • fursa_saida

I sort of hate the bangs, and I have been disagreeing with whoever’s doing her eye makeup for a while now, but the outfit itself is adorable.

    • Rrroza

      Amazing. Perfect.
(What a beautiful soothing thing after burning my eyes on MC)

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      SUPER cute!

    • Sunraya

She is adorable, but it doesn’t sit right with me that she is in Paris, at fashion shows. I know she probably has a tutor, but really…..how about some priorities? And, yes, I am a teacher.

    • Victoria Anzalone

      Love love love.

    • geans

She looks awesome. I want that dress.

    • Erica_Vuitton

The rest of it I really like but I’m sorry I hate the knee socks, I think it’s gross. If she was 18, ok but she’s 16 and it’s creepy.

    • spencerblair

looks like her good friend Taylor Swift’s style has rubbed off on her… needless to say she looks adorable though.

    • ThesisMonkey

wow, I had totally forgotten she’s that young.

    • Cindy Bartlett Zigler

but the white clutch has to go! that would’ve been the perfect opportunity to introduce a pop of colour to the outfit. otherwise, LERVE the dress, shoes, and over-the-knee stockings!

    • Danielle West

      Hate the bangs.

    • kathrineb

Love it AND I like the bangs. All of it is great!

    • calimon

i want some color to this outfit. a pop of red or even yellow

    • papillon

I’m not a fan of the hair or the purse but otherwise, I think this is a great look. And honestly I don’t think she looks sexy at all – just adorable. I would love, love, love to wear that dress!

    • PeaceBang

Loathe the knee-highs. It’s still infantilizing sexualizing schoolgirls crap. Disapprove and hate it.
