GTNYD: Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior at Elle’s Women In Hollywood Celebration

Posted on October 22, 2013

Girl, that’s not your dress.

Marion Cotillard attends the Elle’s 20th Annual Women In Hollywood Celebration in Beverly Hills, California in Christian Dior.

Christian Dior Spring 2014 Collection

So far as we can tell, in order to be able to pull this dress off, one must have the following qualities:

  1. Be a model.

Sorry, Marion. You’re fabulous and certainly French enough for Dior, but this Dior is FMO. For Models Only. Also: the shoes are … well, we don’t know what they are. Are they attractive? We’re not sure. We do know that they’re distracting as hell with a dress like this.

  • MoHub

The toes of the shoes are blending into the carpet, and it looks as if she’s been hobbled. Also, the whole dress is riding low.

  • Sam Corbett

I’m sure those shoes are meant to be whimsical, but the heel design makes them look like they’re buckling under her (clearly-not-considerable) weight.

  • RussellH88

She looks like she’s wearing on of those shiny plastic balloons they sell at Kroger near the checkout. It’s like she should turn around and have “Happy Birthday!” written on her ass.

    • homespunner

      She would look better floating.

  • She should have tried the outfit of the model just before the one wearing this dress. I actually love the print on her.

    • Mary229

I actually think the print itself is interesting and sort of gorgeous. I just loathe the balloon shape of this thing.

    • another_laura

I love the print, too! On her very petite self it’s just too much – it’s falling below the knee and sagging.

  • TrixieConQueso

There’s Wrong…Then Very Wrong. Thank you for new catch phrase too – “FMO.” LOL.

  • alyce1213

She just can’t quit the poofy, can she? I need to see her sleeker.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I suspect this was the intention, but the heels look like they’re about to snap off

  • amber.

    this isn’t anyone’s dress. ever.

    • MoHub

Andrae’s Barbie dress from PR season 2

  • Angela_the_Librarian

The dress would look okay without the garbage sack of material hanging off the back. I don’t think anyone looks good in this (including the model)

  • Imasewsure

Girl That is Not Your Wrapping Paper…. I think I like the shoes….

    • Rhonda Shore

i like the shoes too, and no matter what she’s wearing, she looks radiant…so beautiful.

  • KinoEye

I didn’t know they made iridescent tinfoil.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t think even the models can pull that dress off if they’re wearing it off the runway. Nobody wants to look like a balloon.
The shoes are pretty and interesting and I can’t stop picturing them with cigarette black pants.

    • A la the model who has just turned the corner and has her back to the camera? Cute, right? Same idea, less sackage, sleeker look. Not sure I could ever love those shoes, but I could at least reconsider when not distracted by a puffed out dress.

  • I feel as if, we have placed Marion on a high French pedestal, and maybe – MAYBE, I said – it’s time to discuss taking her back down. I can’t remember the last good gasp we had for her. She has had so many GTNYD moments, or looks that are interesting – but not all that flattering, and plain old wrongs. Is it Dior’s fault? Possibly. They don’t seem to want to alter their dresses to her frame. I love her style and she is undeniably beautiful, but there’s a lack of proper execution by her style team that leaves me disheartened.

    • ChaCha_70

Say it ain’t so! Although I see your point, I don’t think I’m quite ready for that. She’s my girl crush.

    • demidaemon

I’m placing this completely on Dior’s shoulders. She is supposed to be one of their spokeswomen, correct? Then why does she look so awful 90% of the time in their outfits? Clearly, Dior is doing her wrong and she needs the opportunity to fly away to other designers who will do her right.

  • homespunner

How do you put on a dress like this, look in the MIRROR, say “good to go,” and walk out the door? (And shame on whoever didn’t block the door.)

  • MsKitty

Hefty has branched out into couture? Who knew?

  • boweryboy

That’s no one’s dress. Not even the model’s.

  • Katesymae

The hair is not exactly flattering either. HATE the center-part, Jane Eyre updo.

    • ryenerman

      The Jane Eyredo?

      • Katesymae

  • She-Ra’s fabulous friend, Baggera – well versed in the knowledge of trapping her enemies in her beautiful, handcrafted trash bags.

    • demidaemon

  • Judy_S

I get this. I think she’s werquing it.

    • kirkyo

I think the mistake here is the styling, which needed to be amped up not toned down. Also, a hem at or above the knee would have really helped.

      • Judy_S

I guess what I am seeing is a kind of 17th-century sexiness, a Watteau look. The odd shoes and the length of the dress contribute to that, and even the rather simple hair. I actually like it better on her than on the model.

  • hillmad

    Jiffy Pop popcorn dress…

  • MilaXX

yep, that is for models or the very tall fashion-y celeb. As much as I like and unusual shoe, those are hiddy.

  • Mary229

I don’t think this is anyone’s dress. I don’t even care for it on the model. It reminds me of something they would wear in Willa Wonka. (The print could be pretty though on a totally different shape.)

  • kipper

but it is so cute ON the model! what is going on here – is she not wearing the correct garment underneath ?

    • kipper

oh I see – its way too long on her! –

      • MoHub

The entire dress needs to be hoiked up. From top to bottom, it’s hanging about 3 inches too low.

  • BrooklynBomber

I adore her. But that dress is tragic. And the shoes, no, they are not attractive.

  • Glam Dixie

    So much no here.

  • That’s a fugly dress and some fugly shoes. Honestly, she looks like she can be carried away by the wind and just float in the air.

  • StelledelMare

I think she should’ve gone with the look right in front of this one (the one with the similar colored top and black pants). The shoes are ugly no matter what

  • Why is Marion Cotillard wearing a deflated mylar Birthday balloon?

    • bellafigura1

      Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s deflated.

  • xmixiex

i was thinking that this dress could look good on no one, but then I saw the model. so, yes, long and very thin only. perhaps if it was shortened… but even then.
    shoes. are. fug.

  • Amanda Welliver

    I’m getting Jiffy-Pop.
(also not convinced the model is pulling it off either.)

  • Maybe Diane Kruger?

    • Imasewsure

No she would have worn it with some stupid hat

  • Danielle

Those shoes are hurting my soul. If Marion can make Dior look bad, there truly is no hope for the rest of us plebs.

  • SewingSiren

I absolutely LOVE this on Marion. So French and couture and vaguely masquerade. I think it looks better on her than the model honestly. The best dress I’ve seen in a long time.

  • kcnitch

As I looked at these photos, I thought “only an Amazon can wear this” before reading the FMO comment. The shoes, I find…interesting, and very distracting.

  • Heather

It’s a Hershey’s Kiss Halloween costume! She just needs a white ribbon with ‘Hershey’s’ written in light blue Sharpie to complete the look.

    • lobsterlen

I was thinking jiffy pop dress but Hershey Kiss dress works too.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

What a sack of dress that is.

  • Shawn EH

Maybe Dovima could have worked this. Or Suzy Parker.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Is she playing a Hershey’s Kiss in her next film and this is the ‘Getting into character’ dress?

  • Sarah

Nope, ugly shoes, all right. I really thought she could look good in anything (esp. Dior) but she has proven me wrong. Damn that’s an awful dress.

  • tereliz

    I think she knows it.

  • MannahattaMamma

    that’s not a dress, that’s a beanbag chair.

  • jw_ny

It wouldn’t be as bad on her if it were properly inflated, bodice hiked up, and the hem came to just above her knees. It’s made worse by her clean face and those awful focus pulling shoes.

  • msdamselfly

    I think she looks gorgeous

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It should be considered a crime to make Marion look this silly.

  • imspinningaround

  • TAGinMO

Nobody puts Baby in the dumpster.

  • melanie0866

That’s not anyone’s dress. It’s a very pretty trash bag.

    • demidaemon

I’m not sure about the pretty part. Otherwise, I completely agree with you.

  • Sonja Brisson

No one would look good in this dress.

  • Meredith

Those kind of shoes, with the heel in the middle of the shoe, are CRAZY ugly.

  • SugarSnap108

All Girls Who Live And Breathe, that is not your dress.

  • TigerLaverada

Looks like a balloon ascension. Not good.

  • Trickytrisha

Dang, I think the dress is gorgeous. Probably unwearable, but gorgeous. I guess I just like shiny things. Those shoes.. oh god, please no.

  • GillianHolroyd

The skirt appears more bouffant on the model but the main issue is that it is too long here. Also, sad hair.

  • PastryGoddess

I’m sure Raf Simmons is a very nice person and a great designer. But Dior is not where he should be.

  • Ann VerWiebe

Honestly, it could not make her look wider. I think that fabric is too busy for a Watteau back.

  • marlie

The shoes are the worst part, in part because they blend in with the carpet. I actually like this dress, and I think that Marion could pull it off if the styling had been perfect. Different shoes, and color (OMFG) on her face/lips.

  • FoxInSocks

Those shoes are bizarre and I’m kind of in love with them. The dress was a SDW for me: “scroll-down-whoa”. Starts out ok and then you scroll past a certain point down the page and it’s all unexpected nasty surprises. Unfortunate use of a faboo textile.

  • YoungSally

I actually like the shape — although where she is showing the back and hiding her front not so much that angle. It’s reminiscent of original Balenciaga.

  • She looks so uncomfortable.

  • E. D.

It would be her dress if the skirt hit the same place on her leg and flared out.

  • Violentcello

She’s too pretty for all the things going wrong here. Dress, hair, makeup–it’s all working against her.

  • demidaemon

This is a tin foil sack. Poor Marion, bound by contract to get to ugliest dress possible. i feel for her and JLaw sometimes.

  • cocohall

Like so many others, I immediately had visions of theJiffy Pop foil happily expanding on the stove top. My real problem is there is not enough volume. This Jiffy has only half-popped. So disappointing. If the skirt was really puffed up and a bit shorter, I would be on board. I like the fabric and I think MC has enough spirit to look like a mylar balloon about to float away or party popcorn. (In my house the Jiffy Pop only came out on special occasions like sleep overs; otherwise we popped the popcorn in a pot on the stove.)

  • tixilyttik

This is the perfect example of an FMO dress if there ever was one. It’s above the knee on the model, well below the knee on the actress. How does something think you can just grab a dress off a model and throw it on a non-model? Again, who are these stylists? I know she has one.
At what point do the design houses realize this is doing their brand more harm than good? I just don’t get it.

  • Pterodactyl111

If it didn’t have that weird cape I would be totally on board.

  • Miss WKS

    Jiffy Pop

  • Dagney

That. is not a dress. It’s Hershey’s Kiss wrapper.

  • quiltrx

Girl, that’s not your full-body disco shower cap.
    (with apologies to The Duchess.)

  • Jean Genetic

I see all these thin, gorgeous actresses and they look thick next to the models. It’s scary, but I think the models look terrific. Help, I’m turning into a fashionisto!

  • Quelle horreur!

  • Dagney

Jesus I just looked at this again. What the hell….it’s a foil bag. Really? Designer people? THIS is a DESIGN?

  • stonecoldcuddlewhore

    Ewwww 90’s shoes.

  • crash1212

Hate the dress, even on a model. Love the shoes. Marion is beautiful.

  • oohsparkley!

It doesn’t seem to have the same proportions as the one on the model. It looks like it should be 1/3 to 2/3 and Marion’s looks about 4-5 inches too long. It would probably look much better if it hit her a couple of inches above the knee like on the model. It would still be a hard dress to look great in, but it should be better. The shoes are ugly and unflattering.

  • Uncle Spike

Camera angles. We’re approximately viewing the dress on the model at chest height. Poor Marion is having her picture taken at head height. This makes the hem of the skirt look droopy, sad, and shapeless. I think the dress would have much more pow if it had more support or more severe angles. Oh well.

  • I have been on my feet for 3 days, so my legs and feet are aching anyway, but those shoes are giving me sympathetic pains.

  • kimiakay

The colors are wonderful, and the fabric. This is an almost dress for me. The shoes are just so weird-that curved heel does look painful.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

    Thank You, that was beautiful!

  • Fuchaforever

I love this dress!!!! But yes it’s too long for her.

  • AnneElliot

That dress is nobody’s dress. Wow, she looks uncomfortable. The dress, the shoes, the hair — she needs to fire her stylist.

  • I like the way the shoes look. I’d never wear them and can’t imagine why anyone would. But I like the look. The dress is just awful and meant for no human being.

  • Gatto Nero

Really unfortunate silhouette, especially at that length. It works, just barely, on the model in a short version. But on poor Marion, it looks like a half-deflated iridescent mylar balloon.
    Bad shoes, bad!
Hair and makeup are pretty, though. She’s straight-up gorgeous, no matter what.
