Emma Watson in J. Mendel at the Gravity NYC Premiere

Posted on October 02, 2013

There’s a bit in our book, in the chapter on the red carpet, that many of our longtime Bitter Kittens will recognize. It’s about how it’s smart for a celebrity to dress according to the genre of movie she’s attending (action movie: dress slutty, rom-com: dress like a Valentine, superhero movie: primary colors, Oscar-bait movie: award-like metallics). Sandra Bullock kinda went with the sci-fi-appropriate minimal white with metallic accents (the Princess Leia, if you will) for this premiere, but we have to give it to Emma for really taking that theme and running with it.

Emma Watson attends the premiere of “Gravity” in New York City in J. Mendel off-the shoulder dress with tiered pleat detail and scuba silk band paired with an off white embroidered satin mini minaudiere and Manolo Blahnik for J. Mendel shela patent metallic booties.

We’re not super-crazy about the white band across the top. It feels kind of restrictive; like she wouldn’t be able to wave her arms in the air like she just don’t care, or point at anything in judgment. We like the layered hems, though. And the very subtle differences in the whites. Competing whites don’t always work, but it’s done well here. Of course the real story is at the bottom. Those robot-girl shoes are KILLA. They pretty much make the look.

This is a WERQ for me. Gosh I really like her. (Though I’m worried that baby toe is gonna snap off.)

    • leahpapa

Indeed! Her poor little feet are swimming in those shoes, but they look hella fierce regardless.

    • MarissaLG

Absolutely. I love the shoes and the dress – especially the different whites. Makeup is perfect for this look too. Wonderfully updated 90s chic.

    • random_poster

      Agreed. WERQ it!

  • Mary Featherstone

I think she looks really, really beautiful!

  • RussellH88

  • She would be well cast as the daughter of Han and Leia.

    • mlle

      OMFG yes.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I can not imagine what a smug smartass that child would be.

  • Latin Buddy

I actually thought you guys were going with “white = future, astronaut”…movie is space movie

  • alyce1213

WERQ. For a short dress, it’s quite elegant and I agree, a successful use of white and ivory together. The shoes add drama, they’re really stunning.

  • She looks perfect to me. But really bangs it outta the park is the undeniable intelligence in those eyes.

    • sagecreek

Bingo. You can’t buy that in a store, either.

      • Rhonda Shore

She’s exquisite and yes, brainy. And YES, LIPSTICK!!!

    • LANDRU3000

Totally, (To me she looks like a young Frances Gumm.)

  • Well played, young lady.
I still get a bit of a “fun, funky bride” out of this look, but that’s really because it is just so well put together.

  • Aidan B

    Love it!!

  • susan6

I dunno, I think the shoes are a bit too focus-pulling. This dress, in order to be appreciated, needed some minimalistic shoes.

    • jjtxgrrl

Do the shoes look too big to anyone else??

      • Kristi Mitchell

        THANK YOU, Yes!

  • Diego!

I have some mix reviews for this look. The fit in the dress is terrible, and the shoes are +1 number her size. Had she worn this fress fitter (?) and with her own size of shoes, thils would have been a WERQ:

  • Janet B

    Love the dress.

  • Krysta

    She’s so pretty!

  • KirFla

    I just luv huh!

  • filmcricket

Those shoes are fantastic. Wish they fit her feet.

    • sagecreek

Now, now, have you learned nothing here at T-Lo? Millions of dollars are spent on perfecting red carpet looks, but somehow, shoe fit is exempt.

Yeah, I don’t get it, either.

  • sagecreek

It’s a WERQ for me, too.

  • Shawn EH

    Awe-inspiring chic.

  • Just enough interest on the dress, bag, and shoes; and a flawless face! Perfect. I love that they didn’t pull her hair too tight and tip this over into costume. This could set her up nicely for some Rosamund-Pike-type “uptight space doctor who turns out to be surprisingly sexy once the aliens invade to tear open her uniform and steal her hair tie” roles.

  • anabel22

Not liking the hair so much but she looks great & fresh.

  • Monday1900

I love this look and this dress–she looks amazing!

  • Erica_Vuitton

She looks a touch too pleased with herself in these pics for my taste. And those shoes are at least two sizes to big.

  • formerlyAnon

Damn close to a WERQ. What stops me is that she doesn’t look 100% comfortable to me.

    • JDreesen

probably cos her feet look they’re about to werq their pretty way right out of those shoes the next time she takes a step.

but yeah, other than that, this look is stunning.

    • mlle

She always looks a bit stiff to me in her full-on Fashion getups.

  • Adrianna Grężak

Great look overall. Love the shoes. Agree with the top, but I think the dress looks more interesting

  • Chuck Barthelme

    Shoes are hella awesome.

  • LaSylphide

Love it, head to toe, although the shoes are almost a bridge too far for my taste. But no question, they enhance the outfit.

  • mjude

practically perfect in every way. adore her

  • decormaven

    Well played!

  • mlle

Love that she didn’t take “minimal” as a cue to go without jewellery. The pieces she has on are well thought out.

  • rebeemoon

Looks to me like the “band” across the top is not one piece. If you look closely, you can see there are sleeves. So if you’re worried that Emma couldn’t wave her arms in this, you can breathe now.

  • melanie0866

She does look great, except the shoes are three sizes too big.

  • those are some sci-fi pumps fer shur.

  • MilaXX

Not sure what is happening but disqus ate my first post and the attempt to repost has been hanging for 11 minutes now.
Like the look, love the dark lip. Don’t like the shoe but it works with this look. Dislike that the shoe is too big.

    • Fanny_Trollope

Confirming that you are here, MilaXX. Carry on.

  • HVM

This is another personal best. Between her and Sarah Hyland, the young ladystars are really figuring it out.

  • stubbornthoughts

  • another_laura

I don’t like this particular use of white-on-white. That having been said, I think it’s pretty much killer, hair and makeup perfect for it, and bravo to her!

  • mommyca

She looks perfect! Love the dress and the shoes!

  • Constant Reader

Emma really needs to stage an intervention for the young post-Disney stars. THIS is how to show you’re an adult and want to be taken seriously as one.

  • crash1212

There are those J. Mendel SHOES! I love those SHOES! Also, this look….total WERQ for me.

  • Kelly

Love this. My quibbles are minor (shoes too big, dress top a little unimaginative). But overall, it works.

  • Trickytrisha

Definitely swoon-worthy. That dress gives me goose bumps, it’s that good, even the white band which totally makes it coolicious. Emma certainly shines here, and outdoes the model by far in the dress. Shoes? Great, but somebody’s stylist needs a good lashing with the proverbial damp pasta for the fit.

  • When you are looking that fierce, you don’t point. You raise your eyebrow in judgement, and everyone rushes to fix your complaint.

  • imakeart

    Hair and makeup are perfection.

  • Nazzzy

WERQ! I love it when she wears enough make up to emphasize how beautiful she really is, but still lets her freckles shine through.

  • marlie

She looks AH-MAZING. Sleek and futuristic, without being costume-y. LOVE.

  • kimmeister

Shoes and clutch are killer, but I’m not wholly convinced that the clutch is right for the outfit.

  • DominoEstella

She looks incredible and way better than the model!

  • quiltrx

That’s a killer dress. The band of slightly-shiny at the top and those bands at the bottom really make it sing.
Those shoes are very cool…but again, the shoe designers don’t seem to be making shoes in consideration of how a woman’s foot is actually shaped. The fact they appear too big doesn’t help either.

  • fringebenefit

Emma hardly ever puts a foot wrong. Do we know her stylist? It would be interesting to know the stylist of those who so consistently get it right–and wrong.

  • Caroline

This so should be a WERQ!!!! Dear God I would rock that look in a second.

  • ellisd123

J’adore those shoes!!!! She looks all kinds of fabulous. I even like the lip, whereas normally I find that shade to be too harsh.

  • Clair Ellis

Her facial expressions is like ‘I know something you don’t know…everything.’ I love her. She looks fabulous and I love that she choose a bold lip over eye with this dress bc it would have gone either way.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    I too say WERQ!

  • steeg of their own

    A+, Emma. WERQ it.

As a side note: THIS is how you do the clean faced look on the red carpet. There have been a lot of starlets trying it lately and looking washed out. I feel like a ‘clean face’ for a red carpet means only the essential makeup (in this case, attention to her eyes and a strong mouth), not completely free of makeup. You can see her freckles here, which is charming, but her face is still strong enough to demand attention against the white of the dress. Well done to whomever may be styling her. She says she often styles herself, so if this is just her, she’s got fabulous taste.

  • I’m not a big fan of shoes that are closed in the front but show the toes, but these are the exception to the rule! Love the dress, love the accessories, adore the person wearing it!

  • xmixiex

  • ItsDicey

I actually like it. All of it.

  • Crystal

  • Gatto Nero

Beautiful, including the plum lips and the ironic little smile.
