Daniel Radcliffe for Flaunt Magazine

Posted on October 15, 2013

We didn’t think Daniel had it in him to pull off a Dandy look, but … well DAMN. Just look at him:

“Kill Your Darlings” star Daniel Radcliffe covers the November 2013 issue of Flaunt magazine in a velvet suit by Velvet suit by Richard James, shirt by Kit Neale, and silk tie and pocket square by DSquared2. Photographed by Adam Whitehead and styled by Steven Westgarth.

Not just pulling off a lawn-green velvet suit; working the SHIT out of one. We had no idea. Now we’re sad that he tends to look so colorless (if impeccable) on the red carpet most of the time.

Inside, slightly less dandified outfits and smart soundbites:

On playing Allen Ginsberg: “The transformative thing about the role wasn’t playing such a famous character or playing a character that had such a huge influence on society. It was more of trying to find your voice, and finding out who you are. It’s usually an awful and very painful journey, and it has to be—it involves getting heartbroken or failing at something that you want to succeed at. Those are important things to go through, and that was the thing that attracted me to the part.”

On playing a young man in love: “I don’t think there’s any difference between how one falls in love. People express love differently, person to person, but it’s not gender or sexuality related. The only difference it made was obviously the actual sex scene, of course…”

On the political spectrum in the United States: “The thing I’ve learned from spending time in America is that the fatal mistake is to consider it to be one country, or to tar any particular region with one brush. America has such a strong conformist character that the counter culture that arises from it is all the more vibrant—that goes all the way from Ginsberg to Nirvana…actually, ever since the 1920s onwards.”

We kind of wish we could pull off a lawn-green velvet suit now.

    Dandy elf!

  • seelebrennt

that cover shot is GORGEOUS. i love seeing all his success; he definitely has worked for and earned it!

    • Lucía Gavello

I agree! He has such a great bone structure, and I even love the eyebrows.

      • ConnieBV

And his face has color! That alone is a win.

    • mshesterp

He had a terrific profile in the New Yorker, I think, which made me like him all the more. He’s hard-working, very insular, and doesn’t want to be a burden because of his fame. He’s the delightful anti-celebrity. I just love the photos–so pensive and intense.

      • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Right??? I just wanted to ship him off to a retreat somewhere in the Hebrides with his parents for a couple of months. Truly, he is a Nice Young Man.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Sooooo you’re not getting Sexy Leprechaun? That’s just me then? Ok.

    • kmk05

Ahahahahaaaaa I can’t unsee it now. I think it’s the velvet, it just makes it worse.

    • formerlyAnon

I can’t get “sexy leprechaun” because as far as I’m concerned that’s an unresolvable oxymoron.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

If Halloween has taught me anything, it’s that you can make anything sexy, simply by adding the word.

        • JDreesen

          sexy applesauce.

          oh my god.

        • formerlyAnon

I will defer to your superior wisdom and believe that someone, somewhere, sometime, has/can/will be a sexy leprechaun.

But I’ve never seen it and can’t imagine it and Mr. Radcliffe really isn’t helping any.

        • zenobar

          Marry me.

    • Sadie-Ann

I totally saw. It probably doesn’t help that he always looks so tiny to me.

    • zenobar

I was getting a strange Elijah Wood Sexy Hobbit thing, actually. But now that you mention it…

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Definitely – he could never wear it on the red carpet because he’d look even more pocket-sized.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I’m after his lucky charms, that’s for sure.

  • krelnick

Mow those eyebrows and we’re in business.

    • Kristin McNamara

And I was going to comment that it appears as though someone in his employ had finally begun to tend to them! This is the thinnest/tamest they’ve looked maybe ever…

  • Danielle

Excuse me, I’ve got to go take a cold shower now.

    • Domo_Konnichiwa

Don’t get pregnant again from sausage viewing! You’ll end up with quintuplets in no time!

      • Danielle

Hahaha! I wouldn’t mind Danrad spawn!

  • hmariec19

He has a great face for the cameras. And he sounds much older than he actually is.

    • ms_kat

There was a wonderful NYT piece on him. I think that he is working really hard at not being the typical star and he has grown up having to be more circumspect because of it.

  • TAGinMO

    Yes. Even the eyebrows.

  • lundibleu

He looks gorgeous, though I suspect there’s a wee bit too much airbrushing going on there. The suit though… no. I just wish they’d picked a different colour, ’cause I don’t think that shade works for anyone.

  • theblondette

So great! He looks fabulous. And I think he comes across as such a generous, decent, intelligent person.

    • Leah Elzinga

he always seems like a real “working actor” kind of guy, in the best sense of the term.

    • Violina23

agree x1000…. I wish I could just hang out with him, he seems like such a great guy. Plus, he’s British (I love me some British accents), and he sings show tunes. :-)

      • Constant Reader

Awww, I love anyone who will sing show tunes!

      • Kate4queen

I do both of those things and my kids used to hate me in the mornings… :)

  • MilaXX

Such a smart young man. LOVE the cover shot. green velvet and all.

  • MerBearStare

I think Bobby Hill wore this outfit on my favorite episode of King of the Hill.

“I need a window seat because this flower is wilting.”

    • tereliz

      “Look, I’m a dandy!”

LOL, pics like this are the reason I come to this site.

  • Karen Belgrad

oooh… I always wanted a smoldering garden gnome!

  • hughman

    Pocket gays : take notes.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

“We kind of wish we could pull off a lawn-green velvet suit now.” – I’m sure you can!

  • Sobaika

    Ahem. Good suit.

  • MK03

    Oh good lord yes.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Working the shit out of that editorial and giving great answers to the interview, now it seems he will get rid of the Harry Potter stigma sooner than I thought, and in a big big way.

    • UsedtobeEP

I so hope for him that this Ginsberg role is outstanding. I don’t want him to be another Macaulay. I think he deserves a reward for working so hard for so long on those Potter films. (Other than the bajillion dollars he made, I mean.)

      • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I hope so too, he seems to be so down-to-earth and so far he’s kept himself out of unnecessary and embarrasing scandals that could have come with stardom at such a young age, so I can’t help but root for him.

      • filmcricket

He doesn’t remotely resemble Ginsberg, either in looks or in accent, but I definitely was not thinking “Oh, it’s Harry Potter!” throughout the film, FWIW.

      • MK03

He’s had Macaulay Culkin beat acting-wise since at least Prisoner of Azkaban. Also, Dan’s parents aren’t crazy attention whores who would sell him up the river for a quick buck.

      • mshesterp

There comes a point that the amount of money he made for them is so stupid it doesn’t even seem real, and I love that he works because he wants to make a name for himself, improve his craft, and not be Harry Potter 24×7 ad infinitum. They really struck gold when they cast him at 12-ish–he’s grown up into an impressive man from all the reports I’ve read.

  • Deanna Bisaha

I am loving him in “A Young Doctor’s Notebook”. It’s dark, but funnier than I expected it to be, with a strong whiff of Mel Brooks. My hat goes off to whoever realized Daniel Radcliffe could playing a young John Hamm (despite the rather large height difference).

    • JulieTy

yes yes yes! I am loving every second of this hilarious and macabre show — it’s like a Russian, Tim Burton-y “Northern Exposure.” I only wish it were in high definition.

      • Daisy Walker

        Completely agree on all points!

        • Deanna Bisaha

          He’s no Leopold Leopoldovich.

          • Daisy Walker

            Haha! Ain’t that the truth!

    • MartyBellerMask

Really? It sounded like a train wreck. I’ll have to take your word for it *I guess*. 😉

  • Glam Dixie

    Well color me pleasantly surprised.

  • Ashleigh

he’s so great. I wish I could see more of #2

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

    I would mow his lawn.

  • ashtangajunkie

Delightful. Also, gorgeous and made even more appealing by sounding as though he has his shit together.

  • PastryGoddess

I also want to pull off a lawn green velvet suit. But I don’t think we mean the same thing 😉

    • JDreesen

      we mean the same thing.

oh, you weren’t talking to me.

      we still mean it though.

      • Lanus

  • Adrianna Grężak

He looks great! Give this boy some ad campaigns!

  • Fanny_Trollope

The article about him in the NYT Sunday Magazine last week was fascinating. He’s a very complex individual dealing with a good number of demons. I will watch his career with interest.

    • Adrianna Grężak

      Good to know!

  • Guest

Good to know! I’ll look for it

  • formerlyAnon

He is darn sure pulling that off – in the photo. I am not endorsing it wholesale, I wonder how much lighting and color correction did to make it work.

He does come off well in his comments. The one about U.S. politics and culture is probably the best I’ve ever heard on that topic by a non-native. (I think it’s generally an unfair question to ask foreign nationals – unless they’ve resided in your country for years and years – about such things.) Even if he didn’t think it up by himself, it’s a darn good answer.

ETA: These photos reinforce my recently formed belief that his looks aren’t going to come into full flower till his 40s.

    • alyce1213

I found his ideas about American politics and culture only partially agreeable (the first part). This bit, however: “Ginsberg to Nirvana…actually, ever since the 1920s onwards.”
Nonconformism was not born in the 1920s, or with Allen Ginsberg’s generation. Walt Whitman immediately comes to mind. I don’t think the remark was well informed.

      • formerlyAnon

I’m a more lenient examiner than I should be, perhaps. You’re right that it’s not a complete answer, but I’ll still say it’s way better than the answer one usually gets from actors about the politics and culture of a country not-their-own. And a good answer for a foreign born & educated actor who’s only 24 and never lived in the U.S., nor had any post-secondary education. What he knows is no doubt
based on the prep he did for the role.

You’ll be pleased to know I’m not an educator. 😉

      • paginatrix

One might argue that America itself was founded on nonconformism. (As in: Americans got tired of conforming to British laws and customs, and formed a new country.)

    • Fionnuala Barrett

Eerie! At the second photo I too thought, “Hmm, he’s going to age well.”

  • Constant Reader

“Working the SHIT out of a lawn-green velvet suit.” Exactly, Uncles. Exactly.

  • Snailstsichr

    What soulful eyes!

  • JDreesen

so there you have it. the boy just needs to clench his jaw.

    mystery solved; ovaries tingling.

ETA: um…hmm. just did a little search. apparently Mr. Radcliffe (that’s right) is one year younger than i am allowed based on the one-half-your-age-plus-seven-years rule. so…guess that was my ovaries tingling in, like, a motherly way? or whatever?

    • formerlyAnon

While I am relieved to know that by that rule, NONE of my inappropriate crushes are actually inappropriate, I don’t think one can apply any rule (other than the age of consent) to persons one has only encountered and likely will only encounter, through print, film or digital media.

      • JDreesen

ooooh, i didn’t even think of that kind of loophole. i’m going to run this theory by my husband, who – earlier when i was doing all the maths required to come up with my ETA – mumbled something about me “walking on dangerous ground.”

        • formerlyAnon

If he doesn’t go for it, try “margin of error.” If you take plus or minus 5% as your estimated (that is, made up on the spot) margin of error, that give you at least another year to work with.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Best he’s ever looked. Still looks like a little elf to me… maybe even moreso in a green suit, but it’s a good look for him considering.

  • Milos Mom

Amazing what a good haircut can do for a man.

  • e jerry powell

I know he was selling Ginsberg, but the first thought I had when I saw the cover was a Leprechaun reboot. Adorable!

  • LittleKarnak

Needs a little work around the brows but otherwise j’adore!!!!!

  • vahtel

I love him even more now, if that’s possible.

  • Janet B

He looks fab in those gorgeous colors

  • Trickytrisha

First pics of him that didn’t make me want to pinch his cheeks and read Goodnight Moon to him.

  • Imasewsure

    That suit!!

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I feel like he and Macaulay Caulkin should play estranged brothers in something. Hipster-fabulous brothers.

  • Fred Vaughn

  • AnnaleighBelle

Awww, my ex-husband’s bone structure and coloring. His eyebrows were neater, though.

  • manina

See? He can pull off anything. Don’t ever criticize him again!

  • siriuslover

He used to be very colorful on the red carpet during his HP days. This looks lovely on him.

    • filmcricket

God, I’d forgotten how terribly he used to dress as a teen. Such a far cry from the sharp suits he always has on now.

      • siriuslover

I think the phrase he used once to describe his sartorial style was “kitschy.” I have so much work to do today that I may just have to spend some time on the internet looking it up! 😉

  • Synnamin

oh my heavens. Momma needs to take a breather… he is utterly breathtaking in these photos

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

He comes across, not just in this interview, as smart and self-aware. Makes me wonder if his casting as Harry Potter was serendipitous or if he had those (budding?) qualities as a young boy. He has definitely made some excellent casting choices after HP. The styling of the beautiful green suit is fantastic. The tie choice is genius! Who’d a thought???

    • Catiline

What I’ve always heard is that Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter movies, had also directed Home Alone. When Harry Potter rolled around, he was determined not to have another “Culkin situation,” and rigorously interviewed the parents of all the child actor candidates for the roles to weed out any psycho stage families. So it’s not a total coincidence that the three main Potter kids have all turned out pretty well.

Having said that, I think there’s definitely some serendipity in just HOW awesome DanRad has turned out to be!

  • Therese Bohn

    Dan the Man! Love it.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

He’s grown up to be as intelligent as he is handsome and talented.

  • TaurusKW

Well damn. Look who cleans up all purdy! Who would have thought he had an inner model?

  • ballerinawithagun

I’ve never found him attractive before, but WOW! Really sets off his eyes.

  • DominoEstella

    well hot damn..

  • Toby Wollin

OK..let’s redo the Prada men’s clothing shoot and include this one in there also..

  • quiltrx

LOVE his hair like this! And I love how, particularly in the cover shot, the photog really captured those great angles of his face. That often all gets lost in the overbright RC lights.

  • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

I think all the Harry Potter young cast are doing pretty well for themselves. LOVE that suit – wow!

  • https://plus.google.com/108251075533777132179/posts Frank Lithium

Sharp as fuck. Plucking a bit of the eyebrow near the nose ridge would make this look truly critic-proof.

    • Michelle Wilson

I dunno. Leaving that bit of wild eyebrow gives him some gravity that makes me take him a bit more seriously.

      • Gatto Nero

Yes, I like it. It’s the one thing about him that looks unruly.

  • tixilyttik

He’s a little living doll. I want one. Seriously…beautiful young man.

  • Cheryl

I love it and him. Still have some unresolved feeling about being attracted to someone that I first saw as a preteen wizard.

  • Ms_Flyover

We’re I prone to developing crushes on kids less than half my age and 2/3 my height, this kid would be first in line. He impresses me every time he opens his mouth.

  • flamingoNW

    Best I’ve ever seen him

  • unbornfawn

Damn, he looks good. Great spread and he even comes off as intelligent. Way to go Daniel.

    • tarqueeny

When has he ever come off as not intelligent in an interview? Daniel tends to be very articulate, thoughtful and witty in most of his interviews.

  • Michelle Wilson

Such a beautiful lush color palette in that photo. I wish more men dressed so confidently and playfully. Glad to see Daniel gives thoughtful and interesting answers in a print interview because his tv interviews are often so manic and uncomfortable.

  • SewingSiren

The green velvet suit is ravishing.

  • CeeRich

He looks AMAZING. Well done Mr. Potter!

  • Jessica Freeman

Probably the first time I’ve thought of him as remotely sexy.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Wow Harry Potter looks seriously seeeeeeexy! Love the hair that looks fabulous!

  • carnush

Good for him. He seems to have his feet on the ground and is building a strong career on his terms. That green really brings out his eyes.

  • marlie

He looks fabulous. That first photo (all of them, really), is just so striking.

  • MartyBellerMask

Loved him on FRESH AIR last week. I still think his TV show with Jon Hamm sounds AWFUL, but the interview was great. He’s just a lovely man.

  • MartyBellerMask

Oh hey– what about those rumors that he’s been asked to play Freddie Mercury? Probably rubbish. But if not i think it would be… not good.

    • tarqueeny

Dan has openly denied the Freddie Mercury story, it was a madeup rumour.

Also, A Young Doctors Notebook was one of the best series on tv last year and definitely worth watching. I’m looking forward to the new series next month.

  • JP

He’s come a long way, both style-wise and intellect/articulation-wise. His thoughtful answers above are a far cry from admitting he thought Napoleon’s name was Napoleon Napoleon. *g* Though he’s endearing either way.

  • Not applicable

    i am so in love….

  • AzSportsGirl

Wow. He’s officially NOT Harry Potter anymore. That 2nd shot of him staring directly at ME banishes all thoughts of HoGwarts.

  • throwslikeagirl

    Whassup with his shirt cuffs?

  • traceyishere

    Get those eyebrows under control!

  • Nancy Karpen

Wow! He looks fabulous in color. Great photos

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

He is completely pulling it off. He looks fantastic. And if you haven’t watched ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook’, do! It’s hysterical in a very weird way.

  • MzzPants

That’s some first class hair. Love the last shot…it’s all broody n’ shit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/susan.carson.378 Susan Carson

Daniel should wear green more often, it suits him. Also love the mix of the shirt and tie. perfect.

  • Marilyn McNeely

    Ed Westwick, anyone?

  • Melissa

Dan Radcliffe is such a class act. He handles all those political/social questions that other celebrities botch with maturity, thoughtfulness, and sensitivity. He has queer friends and disabled friends but never uses them to further his image with some bullshit “charity” act. Rather, he goes out of his way to make sure no one mistakes them for causes rather than people. I’m always impressed with him. And he looks lovely here.
