Dane DeHaan at the “Kill Your Darlings” Premiere

Posted on October 04, 2013

Oooooh, so close, kid. You had us right up until the zoom-in.

Oh, and the scrolldown.

Okay, you only had us for a second or two.

Dane DeHaan at the “Kill Your Darlings” Premiere in Beverly Hills, California.

What we’re trying to say is, this could’ve been so effortlessly chic, but the necklace just plain doesn’t go with the look and the shoes are all kinds of wrong.  Also, the jacket’s kind of big on you.

What do we all think of his casting as James Dean? We think this might be one of the better attempts at capturing his particular brand of narcissisim and angst. He does “tortured” really well.

    Effortful chic it is. Yay!

  • Lattis

A man is in tricky territory when his outfit looks like a 2 yr old’s sailor suit.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Oh, he is no James Dean. I don’t mean to be excessively nasty, but to me he always looks a little sweaty and greasy, and strung out/exhausted. I can’t see him as one of the best looking men of the 20th century.

    • demidaemon

Hmm, your probably right. he’s got that handsome douche thing going on. Dane here looks too college kid, in my opinion.

      • random_poster

        He’s Sheldon Cooper-lite

    • ThaliaMenninger

I’d say young Dean Stockwell, but he was only five years younger than James Dean, so it doesn’t help that much. So then it becomes James Franco, who does look a little like James Dean. But his manner is not at all the same. As soon as he smiles his goofy I’m-high-and-I’m-never-doing-to-be-not-high smile, all resemblance is lost.

    • ConnieBV

I always thought they were more trying to approximate Leo DiCaprio, who would have killed in this when he was younger. This guy lacks a chin.

    • RebeccaKW

If you Google Image for James Dean, they throw in some Franco shots, too, and it’s eerie how much they resemble each other.

  • decormaven

No, this fellow is too young and doesn’t have that presence that Dean effortless exuded. No one’s been close to the original- and I’ve been scanning the stars for a while.

    • Imasewsure

Dean was only 25 when he died so I’m sure this guy (whoever he is) can play 20-25 which is probably the age they are covering in any movie anyway.

Never thought JD was all that good looking – he just had the cool factor and stage presence… maybe this guy has it too? No fashion sense unfortunately!

      • Lori

The thing about ages is that do to a bunch of factors 25 year olds back in the day look a lot older than that to modern eyes, so someone who can play 20-25 now looks to young for 20-25 then. I think that’s less of a problem than the issue of whether or not he has presence and Dean’s brand of cool. At least in these pictures he reads more Gilbert Grape era Leonardo Dicaprio than James Dean.

        • Imasewsure

Wow he does have a Leo thing going…. you are so right

        • ShaoLinKitten

Yes, he definitely looks like the young DiCaprio. They should play father and son in a movie. But James Dean? No resemblance.

  • Imasewsure

What a great Bowiesque face! I think if he’s a good actor, he could do a very good JD especially the NY stage actor early James Dean rather than the Hollywood icon part of his life

  • MilaXX

He looks like a crew member on The Love Boat. I think he’ll clean up well enough to play Dean.

    • fursa_saida

I’m figuring the sweater was meant to be some sort of nod to the whole beat generation dressed down parisian thing. Unfortunately, the derpy suit ruins it.

  • manina

    He is soooo cute!

  • Janet B

    His suit looks oddly feminine.

    • jangma

I was trying to peg what was off, and I think that’s it. The single button, the fit, and the scoop neck sweater: all very pantsuit.

    • GillianHolroyd

I’m on my crappy laptop now and I can’t even SEE any lapels on that jacket. I thought it was collarless, like early Mod. Combined with the jaunty nautical stripe sweater, well, it makes for a very odd look.

  • Trickytrisha

No idea who this is, and from these pics I have no desire to find out.

  • AnguaVonUberwald

He looks like a young DiCaprio, doesn’t he? I haven’t ever seen him in anything, so that illusion might disappear, but the Leonardo is strong in these pictures.

    • Denise Plank

      I’m getting baby Gary Sinise.

  • marlie

I really like this look! The shoes don’t bother me, and the necklace barely registers. The jacket may be a skosh too big, but I love the suit with the striped sweater.

  • quiltrx

Don’t know him. Went to IMDb, still don’t know him.
As for James Dean…well, I haven’t seen him act in anything, so I’ll have to wait and see. Brad Pitt had the best Dean schtick but they didn’t catch him at the right time. I think Michael Pitt could have channeled Dean, but he looks nothing like him (and he already nailed Cobain-esque, so it’s not like they’d let him try Dean too).
Franco has something in the neighborhood of the face (more the expressions than the actual looks), but IMO he’s not got the chops. Hopefully this twee little thing can act and ooze a little sex when we need him to.

    • conniemd

Brad Pitt circa “Thelma and Louise” would have been perfect for James Dean. The Chris Hemsworth in “Rush” with dark hair would have the James Dean Edge as well.

  • Contralto

    THIS guy? As JAMES DEAN?

    • AndreaSkates

      a) too impish-pretty; b) too smarmy in the smile; c) no smolder anywhere…amirite?

      • Contralto

        We have a winner, folks!

      • RebeccaKW

I’ve found myself comparing people to what they would be in Lord of the Rings. James Dean clearly would be a human. This guy? A hobbit. Hell, if he squinted enough and hunched down, he could be Gollum. So, I see no comparison between these two.

  • Debbie Barsotti

He’s in the Metallica movie. Has a lot more presence than these pictures would indicate.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

Yeah, I agree. I haven’t seen the Metallica movie, but I found him really mesmerizing in The Place Beyond the Pines.

      • ShaoLinKitten

But he was playing a sweaty, strung out teenager in that movie. I remember him best as the angry gay teen on In Treatment, and I feel like he plays that same part over and over, with varying levels of gayness.

        • Slanted & Enchanted

My only point was that he has a lot of onscreen presence, in my opinion. Besides, what was Rebel Without a Cause if not a sweaty, strung out teenager? (Apologies to James Dean fans – it’s the only movie I’ve seen him in.)

          • ShaoLinKitten

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. I guess that DeHaan just does not look like a romantic hero to me, or a dreamboat, or a tough cool guy. I like him as an actor, and I agree that he’s got presence, but but it’s more of a weirdo vibe IMO.

  • kirkyo

Are his shoulders really that far below his neck? I think that might be what’s throwing me off with the jacket. Also, the suit is both slim cut and loose fitting, which is just weird.

  • formerlyAnon

He always reads “slightly off” to me. Don’t know why, possibly it’s a weird personal thing.

  • sekushinonyanko

    That is SUCH lady hair.

  • Fannie Wolston

I am liking the cut of that suit, the shoes are regrettable, but at least they ain’t brown. It needs a dandy of a shoe, something slick and gangsta?

  • Katie Nesser

    so very pete campbell

  • E2_Remote

Oh geez. Was he going for 1980′s Soviet sailor in this look?

  • Erica_Vuitton

He needed to cut off three inches on that jacket his legs look so short! Really weird proportions here …

  • VicD

I’m getting a “David Bowie as Tintin” vibe here.
